īccuram (p. 57) s. The second of the five சிவதத்துவம்; which see. Wils. p. 135. ISVARA.
சத்தி
catti (p. 159) s. Ability, power, strength, energy, prowess, வல்லமை. 2. The female energy or active power of deity in all the operations of creating, preserving, destroying, &c., பராசத்திமுதலியன.--Note. Each form of the deity is represented as having a distinct சத்தி described as his consort. 3. A name of பார்வதி. 4. The female organ, as the counter part of the phallic emblem of Siva, ஆவிடையார். 5. An iron spear or dart, கைவேல். W. p. 824. SAKTI. 6. Sulphur, கந்தகம். 7. Soap, சவக்காரம். 8. Bismuth pyrites, நிமிளை. 9. [for சத்திரம்.] An umbrella or parasol, குடை. 1. The white parasol as a badge of royalty, வெண்குடை. 11. Pursuit after works, ceremonies, &c., as one of the five சிவதத்துவம்.--Note. The three saktis are, 1. இச்சாசத்தி. 2. ஞானாசத்தி. 3. கிரியாசத்தி, which see. To these are added சிறசத்தி, and பராசத்தி. Others add 1. திரோதானசத்தி. 2. மாயாசத்தி. 3. விந்துச்சத்தி. சத்திக்குத்தக்கதாய்ச்செய். Do according to your ability. அதெனக்குச்சத்தியாய்க்கிடைக்கும். I shall eventually get it. சத்திகுறைய, inf. To be wanting in strength. சத்திசெலுத்த, inf. To authorise. (p.) சத்திபூசை, s. The puja-worship of the வாமர் sect, performed in secret with raw flesh, ardent spirit, &c. The object of worship being the privities of a naked woman, in personification of the fecundating and operative principle of deity in nature. சத்தியுள்ளவன், s. A rich man, a man of influence. (c.) சத்தியில்லாதவன், s. An incompetent person, a weak person. (c.) சத்திவிளங்க, inf. [loc.] To become manifest as power, a miraculous power. அருட்சத்தி, s. [in சிவஞானபோதம்.] The active energy of deity which is said to enlighten the soul and to be a source of benefit to all animated beings. சிவசத்தி, s. Sakti, or active power considered in its inseparable connection with Siva. (சிவ.சி.) 2. (R.) The consort of Siva, பார்வதி. 3. Siva and his consort. திரவியசத்தி, s. Pecuniary ability. மந்திரசத்தி, s. The force or virtue of incantations. சரீரசத்தி, s. Bodily power, vigor of body. பிரபுத்துவசத்தி, s. Princely dignity, power of rank, &c. வீரசத்தி, s. Valor. 51) *

cātākkiyam (p. 175) s. The third of the five degrees of development or attainment; in which there is an equilibrium between wisdom and works. See சிவதத்துவம். There are five different kinds. Viz.: 1. சிவசா தாக்கியம். 2. மூர்த்திசாதாக்கியம். 3. அமூர்த்திசா தாக்கியம். 4. கர்த்திருசாதாக்கியம். 5. கன்மசாதாக் கியம், or மலசாதாக்கியம். 15) *
சிவன்
civaṉ (p. 188) s. Siva, the third of the Indian Triad, in the character of destroyer, or reducer of things to their primitive atoms. By his votaries he is considered the supreme god. the other deities being subject to him, சங்கரன். சிவகணம், s. The attendant demi-gods of Siva, commonly in companies, சிவன் சேனை. சிவசமயம், s. The Siva religion. சிவசிந்தை, s. Divine contemplation, meditation on Siva--as சிவத்தியானம். சிவஞானசித்தியார்--சிவஞானசித்தி, s. A commentary on சிவஞானபோதம். See சித்தி யார். சிவஞானபோதம், s. A celebrated work consisting of twelve rules translated from the ரௌரவம், or the sixteenth Agama, being almost the only part of the Agamas known in Tamil. It is regarded as divine, without origin, and as not to be read unless the person has attained a competent degree in the religion. Other works--as சித்தியார், சிவப்பி ரகாசம், தத்துவப்பிரகாசம், &c., are commentaries on this or other treatises in support of its doctrines, ஓராகமநூல். சிவஸ்தலம்--சிவஸ்தானம்--சிவதலம், s. Temples, places, &c., sacred to Siva; Saiva temples. சிவதத்துவம், s. Degrees of religious power or attainment derived from Siva, of which five are specified--as 1. சத் தவித்தை. 2. ஈச்சுரம். 3. சாதாக்கியம். 4. சத்தி. 5. சிவம், which see severally. சிவதரிசனம், s. Sight or knowledge of Siva. 2. Pilgrimage to holy places of Siva. 3. A treatise containing a representation of the deity according to the Agamas, ஓர்நூல். சிவதர்மம்--சிவதன்மம், s. Meritorious or virtuous works performed in reference to Siva, as distinguished from actions of benevolence to creatures, பதி தர்மம். 2. One of the eighteen secondary Puranas, ஒருபுராணம். சிவதர்மோத்தரம்--சிவதன்மோத்தரம், s. The Uttera Candum (உத்தரகாண்டம்.) or the last part of the சிவதன்மபுராணம். சிவதீட்சை, s. The initiatory ceremony on entering the Saiva sect. சிவதீர்த்தம், s. A sacred tank within the precincts of the great temple at Ramisseram. சிவதொண்டு, s. Service of Siva. சிவதொண்டர், s. Devotees or votaries of Siva. சிவத்தாபனம்--சிவஸ்தாபனம், s. An edifice sacred to Siva, a large shrine. சிவத்தியானம், s. Contemplation of Siva in silent devotion, an image being formed in the mind as an object of worship. சிவத்துரோகம், s. Sin against Siva; a profanation of sacred things. சிவநிந்தை, s. Blasphemy or contempt of Siva. சிவபஜனை, s. Praising Siva by lyrics. சிவபத்தர்--சிவபத்திக்காரர்--சிவமதஸ்தர், s. Worshippers or devotees of Siva as distinguished from விட்டுணுபத்தர். சிவபத்தி, s. The religion of Siva. 2. The profession of the Siva religion. 3. Adherence, attachment, or devotedness to Siva. சிவபுண்ணியம், s. Deeds of merit, performances in reference to Siva--as சிவதர்மம். சிவபூசை, s. The worship of Siva as practised in the temple or by the கிரியை க்காரன்; the Siva-pujah, consisting of the offering of flowers, milk, boiled rice, fruits, &c., waving incense and light-reciting mantras and praises, prostrating, before the idol, &c., 2. Mental worship of Siva, in which there is an idol ceremony corresponding to what is mentioned above. சிவபூசைவேளையிலே கரடியைவிட்டாட்டுகிறதா. Is it proper to exhibit a dancing bear during the Siva-pujah--i. e. to trifle on a solemn occasion? சிவபுராணம், s. The Siva-Puranas, forming ten out of the eighteen. See புராணம். சிவபுரி, s. The abode of Siva, or city in the Siva-logam, கைலாசபுரி. 2. The city of Benares, as sacred to Siva, காசி முதலியநகரிகள். சிவபோகம், s. Enjoyment of the soul in union with Siva. (தத்.) சிவப்பிரகாசம், s. A work on the Agama philosophy, exhibiting in a condensed view the doctrines inculcated in சித்தியார், and other cognate works. சிவப்பிரதிட்டை--சிவப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The consecration of a temple or image of Siva. சிவப்பிராமணர், s. Brahmans, குருக்கள் who adhere to the Siva or Agama doctrines and practices, as distinguished from those who profess the வைதீகம். சிவப்பிரீதி, s. That which is acceptable, agreeable and pleasing to Siva--as fruits, &c. 2. May it be acceptable to Siva, --spoken by the receiver as an acknowledgement of a gift, an act of reverence, &c. சிவமயம், s. A term of invocation; also of benediction--meaning happiness, prosperity, and success, சுபமஸ்து. சிவமுந்திருக்கூட்டமும், s. See under கூட்டம். சிவமூர்த்திபேதங்கள், s. The different forms assumed by the deity, the gods. சிவராத்திரி, s. (Sometimes சிவநிசி.) The night preceding the new moon in February, kept as a watchnight in honor of Siva. சிவவாக்கியம், s. A poem on theism, wholly condemning polytheism, ஓர் நூல். சிவவாக்கியர், s. The name of a celebrated saint, the author of the poem சிவவாக்கியம். சிவலிங்கம், s. The Linga, as the chief image and material object of worship in the Saiva religion. சிவலோகம், s. The world of Siva, being the upper of the seven superior worlds. See சிவபுரி. சிவவேடம், s. The habiliments, or other badges characteristic of the worshippers of Siva--as red vestments, sacred beads, ashes, the linga, &c. சிவனடியார், s. Votaries of Siva. 2. The sixty-three special votaries of Siva mentioned in Periya Purana. சிவாகமம், s. The Agamas as the scriptures of the Siva sect, being twentyeight; of these the சிவஞானபோதம், a part of the ரௌரவம் and the வாதுளம், are translated into Tamil. The twenty-eight Agamas are the following: 1. காமிகம். 2. யோகசம். 3. சிந்தியம். 4. காரணம். 5. அசிதம். 6. தீபதம். 7. சூக்குமம். 8. சகத்திரம். 9. அஞ்சுமான். 1. சுப்பிரபேதகம். 11. விசயம். 12. நிசுவாசம். 13. சுவாயம்புவம். 14. அனலம். 15. வீரம். 16. ரௌ ரவம். 17. மகுடம். 18. விமலம். 19. சந்திர ஞானம். 2. விம்பம். 21. புரோற்கிதம். 22. இல ளிதம். 23. சித்தம். 24. சந்தானசருவோத்தம். 25. பாரமேச்சுரம். 26. கீரணம். 27. பேதம். 28. வாதுளம். சிவாதனம்--சிவாசனம், s. The place for an image of Siva used for daily worship; [ex ஆதனம்.] சிவாயநம, s. The famous five lettered incantation called the மூலமந்திரம்--as being the foundation of spiritual wisdom and all religion, and the means prescribed and proper for obtaining liberation, from births and union with the supreme. சிவார்ச்சனை, s. The worship of Siva with flowers, incantation, &c.; [ex அர்ச் சனை, worship.] See சிவபூசை. சிவார்ப்பணம்--சிவாற்பணம், s. An oblation to Siva. See அற்பணம். சிவாஸ்திரம், s. A missile weapon or dart said to be given by Siva; [ex அஸ்தி ரம்.] சிவாலயம், s. Saiva temple. சிவானுபவம், s. The bliss of union with Siva; [ex அனுபவம்.] 5)

civam (p. 187) s. Liberation from births, eternal bliss, the true heaven, முத்தி. 2. Spiritual good, நன்மை. 3. Excellence, உயர்வு. (சது.) 4. (சிவ. சி.) The highest state of deity, in which he assumes no form, but is a pure spirit, in perfect quiescence; free from passions, and emotions, eternally and inconceivably happy; in whom the soul liberated from மலம், and birth, becomes absorbed as a drop of water in the ocean, சுயஞ்சிவம். 5. The twentieth of the twentyseven yogas, நித்தியயோகத்தொன்று. 6. One of the five சிவதத்துவம். 7. A measure--as குறுணி. சிவகதி, s. Liberation from births, final bliss, மோட்சம். சிவகதிக்கிறைவன், s. Siva, as god of bliss, சிவன். 2. Argha of the Jainas, அருகன். சிவஞானம், s. Divine knowledge as connected with the Saiva religion, the abstract knowledge of Siva as the deity, பதிஞானம். 2. Divine knowledge or wisdom as possessed by the Supreme, தெய்வஞா னம். 26)

cuttam (p. 193) s. W. p. 851. S'UDD'HA. Pureness, cleanness, chastity--as சுசி. 2. Genuineness, entireness, reality, சுயம். 3. Faultlessness, correctness, பிழையின்மை. 4. Strict morality, sanctity, மாசின்மை. 5. Being unmixed, untainted, unadulterated, கலப்பின்மை. 6. Innocence, innocence established by trial or ordeal, கறையின்மை. (c.) 7. The third and highest state of separate souls next to absorption, சுத் தாவத்தை. 8. A prefix to the names of the phases of the moon in her increase-as opposed to பகுளம். 9. (fig.) Health, salubrity, recovery from disease, welfare, சொஸ்தம். 1. [in astron.] Correction or equation. சுத்தஞ்சோறுபோடும். Pureness will make one prosperous. சுத்தக்கறுப்பு, s. Entire blackness. (c.) சுத்தக்காரன், s. A man who is neat and clean. 2. (fig.) A pure, innocent man, சுத்தன். சுத்தசதுர்த்தசி, s. The fourteenth phase of the moon in her increase--as opposed to பகுளம். சுத்தசத்தியம், s. The simple truth, genuineness, authenticity. சுத்தசலம், s. Clean or pure water. சுத்தசூனியம், s. Absolute nothingness, nonentity, முழுப்பாழ். (c.) 2. Atheism. நிரீச்சுரம். சுத்த சூனியமாக்கிப்போட்டான். He has utterly destroyed the family. சுத்தசைதன்னியம், s. Pure spirit, pure intellect--as distinct from matter. (p.) சுத்தசைவம், s. The highest, or the sixteenth degree of Saivism. See சைவம். சுத்தச்சிவப்பு, s. Pure red, scarlet. (c.) சுத்தஞானம், s. Pure, spiritual knowledge; pure ஞானம் unmixed with works. (p.) சுத்ததத்துவம், s. One of the five properties of Siva. See சிவதத்துவம். சுத்ததாளம், s. A superior kind of தா ளம். சுத்ததினம், s. A lucky day. See சுதினம். 2. New year's day, வருஷப்பிறப்பு. 3. The exact number of days elapsed in an epoch, or in any fixed portion of time --considered as an element for finding the longitude, &c., of the sun, moon, planets, &c. சுத்தத்தோடிருக்க, inf. To be pure in body and mind. சுத்தநாசம், s. (also சர்வநாசம்.) Entire destruction, utter ruin. (c.) சுத்தநிலை, s. As சுத்தம், 7. சுத்தபஞ்சமி, s. The fifth day of the new moon. See பஞ்சமி. சுத்தபட்டினி, s. Utter starvation. (c.) சுத்தபத்தி, s. Real piety, sincere devotion. சுத்தபரிமளம், s. Fragrance, sweet scent. சுத்தபரிசம், s. [in astron.] True time of the beginning of an eclipse. சுத்தபரிசுத்தாங்கம், s. Entire purity, holiness. (Colloq.) சுத்தபவித்திரம், s. Entire pureness, holiness. (p.) சுத்தபாடம், s. The correct or genuine reading. சுத்தபோசனம், s. Sacred food--commonly used in reference to offerings made in the temples. சுத்தபௌரணை, s. The oppositions of the sun and moon. சுத்தபுடம், s. [in astron.] The real situation (longitude) of a planet, &c., as differing from its mean place. சுத்தப்பட, inf. To be cleaned. சுத்தப்படச்செய்ய, inf. To make a thing neatly. 2. [in carpentry.] To plane the wood smoothly. சுத்தப்பிரதி, s. A fair copy. (c.) சுத்தபூமி, s. Cleared land. (p.) சுத்தப்படுத்த--சுத்தம்பண்ண, inf. To cleanse, to clear away, make clean. சுத்தப்பிழை, s. Complete error. (c.) சுத்தப்பொய், s. A downright lie. (c.) சுத்தமத்தளம், s. A superior kind of மத்தளம். சுத்தமனம், s. A frank, sincere mind, கபடமின்மை. 2. A pure mind. சுத்தமாயை, s. Pure spiritual Maya. See மாயை. சுத்தமாய், adv. Wholly, entirely, utterly, absolutely. 2. At all, in the least. (c.) இன்றைக்கெனக்குச்சுத்தமாச்சாப்பாட்டுக்கில்லை. I am, to day, entirely destitute of food. சுத்தமார்க்கம், s. Pure conduct, spotless morality. 2. Sincere piety. 3. The true system of religion. சுத்தம்பண்ண, inf. To purity, either physically or ceremonially; to cleanse, to refine. 2. [in astron.] To equate or correct. சுத்தம்பேச, inf. [prov.] To speak boastingly of one's character, parentage, connexions, &c. சுத்தவநியாயம், s. A gross injustice. (c.) சுத்தவாசனை, s. Pure fragrance. 2. (fig.) A pure state of the soul--oppo. to மலினவாசனை. சுத்தவாளர், s. [improp.] Pure persons. 2. (Rom. usage.) Saints, அர்ச்சியசிஷ்டர். சுத்தவாளி, s. A person proved innocent in a court of justice, not guilty-oppo. to குற்றவாளி. (c.) 2. A holy person. சுத்தவிக்கேபம்--சுத்தவிட்சேபம், s. [in astron.] The true celestial latitude. See புடலிக்கேபம். சுத்தவித்தை, s. [in Agam.] A preponderance of spiritual knowledge above a tendency to works. See சிவதத்துவம். சுத்தக்கட்டிவெள்ளி--சொக்கவெள்ளிக் கட்டி, s. A lump of pure silver. (c.) சுத்தவீரம், s. True valor, heroism. (c.) சுத்தவீரர், s. (sing. சுத்தவீரன்.) True heroes. சுத்தவுபவாசம், s. Absolute fasting, total abstinence during a fast. சுத்தவெள்ளை, s. Pure white. 2. That which is entirely white. (c.) சுத்தன், s. A pure person, a sincere person, பரிசுத்தன். (c.) 2. One ripe for liberation from births, a soul in the third, or highest stage, next to absorption, நின்மலன். 3. Siva, அரன். 4. Brahma, ஐயன். 5. Argha, அருகன். 6. Vishnu, அரி. கைச்சுத்தம், s. Cleanness of hands or freedom from bribery. (c.) மெய்ச்சுத்தம், s. Cleanliness of body. (c.) மனச்சுத்தம், s. Mental purity. (c.) வாய்ச்சுத்தம், s. Veracity, or cleanness of mouth. (c.) சுத்தாங்கம், s. Pureness, cleanness, purity, sanctity, சுத்தம். 2. Entireness, absoluteness, முழுமை; [ex அங்கம்.] (c.) சுத்தாங்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. It is entirely gone. 2. It is quite clean. சுத்தாங்கன், s. A pure person, one without moral stain. (Colloq.) சுத்தாத்துமா, s. A person of superior, spiritual knowledge. 2. One of spotless, irreproachable character. 3. A soul approximating to liberation. (p.) சுத்தாவத்தை, s. As சுத்தநிலை; [ex அ வத்தை.] சுத்தோதகம், s. Pure water. See under உதகம். 94)
