இசை
icai (p. 45) s. A sound, noise, ஒலி. 2. Praise, புகழ். 3. A word, சொல். 4. A tune, melody, மிடற்றாற்பிறக்குமிசை. 5. Instrumental music, நரம்பிற்பிறக்குமிசை. 6. Sound, harmony in music, a harmonious or musical sound, tone, note, &c., இசைப்பாட்டு. Also a term common to the different parts in music. (p.) (சது.)--The seven principal sounds or notes in the vocal and instrumental music of the Hindus are called, சுரம், in singing, and நரம்பு, on stringed instruments; they are, 1. குரல், the guttural sound, the sound coming from the throat, மிடற்றாற்குரல். 2. துத்தம், the second tone of the gamut, or நி modulated by the tongue, நாவினாற்றுத்தம். 3. கைக்கிளை, the sound caused by the palate, அண்ணத்தாற்கைக்கிளை. 4. உழை, the cerebral, or the sound coming from the head, சிரத்தாலுழை. 5. இளி, that which proceeds from the forehead, நெற்றியாலிளி. 6. விளரி, the pectoral, or that which proceeds from the breast, நெஞ்சால்விளரி. 7. தாரம், that from the nose, or nasal, மூக் காற்றாரம்.--These sounds, they compare: 1. With those of animals--as that of a peacock, a bull, a sheep, &c. 2. With the different tastes of milk, honey, &c. 3. With the different scents of jasmin, nymph&oe;a, &c.--The letters (அட்சரம்.) by which they express these notes are as follow: 1. ஆஅ. 2. ஈஇ. 3. ஊஉ. 4. ஏஎ. 5. ஐஇ. 6. ஓஒ. 7. ஔஉ.--The time or measure, (மாத்திரை,) of these notes is as follows:The 1st note குரல் contains 4 measures நான்கு குரல். 2d துத்தம் contains 4 measures நான்குதுத்தம். 3d கைக்கிளை ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுகைக்கிளை. 4th உழை ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுழை. 5th இளி ,, 4 ,, நான்கிளி. 6th விளரி ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுவிளரி. 7th தாரம் ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுதாரம். From the combinations of these notes or sounds, are formed seven different kinds of airs or tunes; (பாலை) viz.: 1. செம்பாலை, or the air in which the first note is doubled, குரலேகுரல். 2. படுமலைப் பாலை, the air in which the second and first notes are compounded, துத்தமேகுரல். 3. செவ்வழிப்பாலை, the air in which the third and the first notes are compounded, கைக்கிளையேகுரல். 4. அரும்பாலை, the air in which the fourth and the first notes are compounded, உழையேகுரல். 5. கொடி ப்பாலை, the air in which the fifth and first notes are compounded, இளியேகுரல். 6. விளரிப்பாலை, the air in which the sixth and first notes are compouned, விளரியே குரல். 7. மேற்செம்பாலை, the air in which the seventh and first notes are compounded, தாரமேகுரல்.--The differences of these tunes are as follow; viz.: 1. கொ டிப்பாலை, a tune higher than செம்பாலை. 2. விளரிப்பாலை and மேற்செம்பாலை, tunes higher than கொடிச்செம்பாலை.--The three different parts in music are: 1. மந்தவிசை, bass, or the lowest pitch--also called, மந்தரம் or காகுளி. 2. மத்திமலிசை, tenor or medium--also called, மதுரம் or சமன். 3. தாரவிசை, treble or the highest pitch-also called, உச்சம் or வல்லிசை.--The different parts are not sung together, but one after another in succession--மந்த விசை, takes its pitch in the key note of the bass--the மத்திமவிசை, in the fifth-and the உச்சம், in the octave. The term is also applied to the several notes or sounds of the octave--also called சுரம்-as the first சுரம், the second சுரம், &c., and the whole are called the சரளி or gamut. இசைகேடு, s. Dissonance, discord, want of harmony, சுரபேதம். 2. Dishonor, disgrace, ill-fame, அவகீர்த்தி. 3. Want of opportunity, inconvenience, inauspiciousness--as of a day, ஒத்துக்கொள் ளாமை. 4. [prov.] Reduced state, emaciated state, இடைந்துபோனநிலைமை. இசைகொள்ள, inf. To be renowned, கீர்த்திபெற. இசைக்குழல், s. A musical windinstrument, ஊதுகுழல். இசைத்தமிழ், s. One of the three kinds of Tamil odes, or other poetry adapted to song--also the various changes made to accommodate language to music, முத்தமிழினொன்று. இசைத்திரிபு, s. A change of tune by mistake, ஓசைப்பிறழ்வு. 2. Variation in music, இசைமாறுகை. 3. A different enunciation of the same terms, according to the different senses they are intended to convey, இசையறுத்துக்கூறுகை-as செம்பொன்பதின்கழஞ்சு, may be செம்பு ஒன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the copper is nine கழஞ்சு--or செம்பொன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the fine gold is ten கழஞ்சு. So குறும்பரம்பு may be குறும்பர் அம்பு, the army of territorial chiefs-or குறும் பரம்பு, a short board used for smoothing ploughed fields. இசைநாள், s. The twenty-fifth, also the twenty-sixth lunar mansions, பூரட்டாதி and உத்திரட்டாதி. இசைநிறை, s. [in poetry.] The use of a letter, or word to fill the measure-an expletive, ஓரிடைச்சொல்; as ஏஎ யிவ ளொருத்திபேடி. Heh! This is a hermaphrodite. இசைநூல், s. The science of music. இசைப்பாட்டு, s. A melody, tune, song, காந்தாரம். இசைமடந்தை, s. Sarasvati, the wife of Brahma; the goddess of speech, of music, fame, praise, &c., சரச்சுவதி. (p.) இசையுள்ளான், s. A man of fame or praise. இசையெச்சம், s. [in grammar.] Ellipsis or omission of a word, சொல் லெச்சம். இசையெடுக்க, inf. To pitch or begin a tune. இசைவல்லோர்--இசைவாணர். s. [vul.] Offensive smell of blood, இரத்தநாற்றம். இரத்தக்கழிச்சல், s. Dysentery, bloody flux, இரத்தபேதி. இரத்தக்கறை, s. A stain of blood on cloth, dried gore in a wound, &c. 2. Blood extravasated and coagulated on the lungs. 3. A collection of blood in local inflammations, contusions, &c. இரத்தக்கனப்பு, s. Obesity, a full or morbid state of the blood, plethora, இரத்தமீறுகை. 2. (fig.) Pride, arrogance, கருவம். இரத்தக்காட்டேரி, s. A female demon. See காட்டேரி இரத்தக்கிராணி, s. Discharge of blood from the bowels, ஓர்வகையிரத்தபேதி. இரத்தக்கொதி, s. [prov.] Heat of blood in youth inflamed with sexual desires, lasciviousness. 2. Feverish state of blood, such a state of the system as induces anger, venery, derangement, &c., fulness of system, plethora. இரத்தக்கொழுப்பு, s. High mettle, wantonness, the state of being high-fed, voluptuousness, இரத்தபுஷ்டி. 2. (fig.) Pride, arrogance, &c., கருவம். இரத்தக்கோமாரி, s. A disease of cows producing a discharge of blood, மாட்டுக்குவருமோர்நோய். இரத்தங்கக்க, inf. To raise or eject blood whether from disease or injury. இரத்தங்கன்ற, inf. To turn black and hard--as a bruise or contusion. இரத்தங்குத்திவாங்க--இரத்தமெடு க்க, இரத்தம்வாங்க, inf. To bleed, to take blood from. இரத்தங்குபீரிட--இரத்தம்பீரிட, inf. To spring, flow or spout--as blood from a vein. இரத்தசாகம், s. The செங்கீரை plant. இரத்தசாட்சி, s. Martyrdom. (Christian usage.) இரத்தசூலை, s. Swelling in the abdomen from obstruction of the menses, operating as a preventive of pregnancy, சூதகவாயு. இரத்தச்சுரப்பு, s. Local inflammation, இரத்தவூறல். 2. Fulness of blood, இரத்தப்பெருக்கு. 3. Suffusion of blood from a bruise, இரத்தச்செறிவு. 4. (fig.) Insolence, haughtiness, இரத்தக்கொழுப்பு. இரத்தஞ்சாக, inf. To look aghast, appear pallid. இரத்தஞ்சிந்த, inf. To shed blood. 2. (fig.) To kill. இரத்தஞ்சுண்ட, inf. To have the blood dried--as in emaciation. 2. To turn pale by having the feelings wounded or mortified. 3. To be reduced in flesh by hunger, fasting, &c., be emaciated. இரத்தத்துடிப்பு, v. noun. Thrilling of the blood in seeing or hearing a near relation under suffering, also superstitiously supposed to take place on such an event, though not seen or heard of. இரத்தத்தொடர்வு, s. A species of inflammation in the head with discharges of blood. இரத்தப்புடையன், s. A species of the beaver snake, the bite of which speedily causes hemorrhage from the eyes, nose, mouth and other passages. இரத்தமண்டலி, s. A very venomous kind of snake whose bite causes the blood to issue from the pores. இரத்தமாடன், s. A demon fabled to be dreadfully cruel. இரத்தமாரணம், s. The காவிக்கல் --Reddle, red chalk. இரத்தமூலம், s. Hemorrhoids. இரத்தவலிப்பு, s. Convulsion by too great a fulness of blood. இரத்தவள்ளி, s. A species of red yam. இரத்தவாரி, s. Immoderate flow of menses. See துவாலை. இரத்தவிரியன், s. A species of beaver snake. இரத்தவெறி, s. Wanton cruelty, high mettle. 2. Fury from drinking blood. இரத்தாசயம், s. urm (p. 64) s. Strength, firmness, hardness, compactness, coarseness, aspiration, force of voice, expression, meaning, &c., வலி. 2. Energy, spirit, exertion, determination, resolution, fortitude, firmness of mind, ஊக்கம். 3. (p.) The breast, chest, மார்பு. 4. Wisdom, knowledge, spiritual knowledge, ஞானம். 5. Velocity, force, missile or projectile force, வேகம். 6. The solid part of timber, வயிரம். 7. Hardness, induration, obduracy, திண்மை. 8. A surrounding wall, மதில். கடலுரமாயிருக்கிறது. The sea is high, rough. காற்றுரமாயிருக்கிறது. The wind is high, boisterous. உரகடல்--உரசமுத்திரம், s. A boisterous sea, a sea generally rough. உரங்குத்த, inf. [prov.] To pound and harden the earth around trees newly set, பலமுறச்செய்ய. உரங்கொள்ள, inf. To thrive, grow strong--as the wind; to get strength, become boisterous--as the sea, பலங்கொள்ள. 2. To exert strength, &c., வலியுண்டாக. 3. To be hardened, indurated, obdurate, கடினமுற. உரங்கொண்டெறிந்து. Throwing with force. காய்ச்சலுரங்கொண்டுகாய்கின்றது. The fever rages and burns. உரஞ்செய்ய, inf. To exert influence, take effect, produce, effect--as arguments, பலஞ்செய்ய. 2. To grow strong, வலியுற. 3. To thrive--as vegetables, &c., பலப்பட. அவரெடுத்தகாரியங்களிலொன்றுமுரஞ்செய்யவில் லை. He has been successful in nothing that he has undertaken. உரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To animate, to encourage. உரமண், s. Hard, ungenial soil. உரமாய்நிற்க, inf. To stand fast, immovable. உரமாய்ப்பெய்கிறமழை, s. A heavy rain. உரமானசத்தம், s. A loud sound. உரமெடுக்க, inf. To remove a particular ailment incident to infants. உரம்போட, inf. To manure land, எருப்போட. 2. To fasten, make firm, உரப்பிக்க. உரம்விழ, inf. To get a particular ailment by rolling on the ground--applied only to a child not twelve months old. உராதரம், s. A woman's breast, முலை. உரேந்திரன், s. A hero, a soldier, வீரன். உரோருகம், s. A woman's breast, முலை; [ex உருகம், birth, origin.] கடலுரம், s. Roughness of the sea. உரக்க, inf. To become intense, grow strong, firm, hard, &c., to increase in strength, intenseness, loudness, &c., to rage, increase in violence, vehemence, heat, malignity, &c., பலமடைய. உரத்துப்படி. A lascivious person. காமப்பற்று, s. Libidinous propensities, காமலிருப்பு. காமப்பால், s. The third section of the Cural--as காமத்துப்பால். காமப்பூ, s. A flower which excites venery, மதன காமேசுரப்பூ, Pergularia tomentosa. காமப்பேய், s. A wanton person, கா மாதூரன். காமப்பைத்தியம், s. Love-sickness, fascination and absence of mind from love, காமப்பித்தம். காமமரம், s. A palm tree, ஓர்மரம், Cycas circinalis. காமரூபி, s. The ஓந்தி lizard, the chameleon, பச்சோந்தி, Lacerta chameleon, L. 2. One able to assume any form at pleasure, வேண்டியஉருவங்கொள்பவன். காமலீலை, s. Libidinous sporting of the sexes together to excite or gratify sexual desire. காமவல்லி, s. A plant said to climb the Kalpa tree in the world of Indra, கற்பத்திற்படர்கொடி. காமவிகாரம், s. Irregular sexual desires, lasciviousness, lust. 2. Sexual love. காமவிகாரமாயிருக்க, inf. To be lustful, lecherous. காமவிகாரன்--காமவிகாரி s. A lascivious person. காமவிடாய், s. Vehement sexual desire. காமவெறி, s. Venereal infatuation. காமன், s. Kama, the Indian Cupid, மன்மதன். Wils. p. 21. KAMA. காமதகனன், s. Siva, as the burner of Kama, சிவன். (p.) காமற்காய்ந்தோன், s. Siva as the consumer of Kama, சிவன். 2. Argha, அருகன். காமன்மைத்துனன், s. Ganesa, as the maternal cousin of Kama, விநாயகன். காமன்றிருநாள்--காமன்பண்டிகை s. A festival to Kama, celebrated in some places in March, மன்மதோச்சவம். காமக்கினி, s. The fire of lust, venereal desire, the venereal principle seated and operative in the body, as one of the three fires of the animal system, காமத்தீ. Wils. p. 211. KAMAGNI. காமாட்சி--காமாக்ஷி, s. A name of Parvati, as having fascinating eyes, பார் வதி; [ex காமம், et. அக்ஷி.] காமாதுரன், s. (fem. காமாதுரி.) A libidinous person, விரகி. Wils. p. 211. KAMATURA. காமாந்தகன், s. Siva, as the destroyer of Kama, சிவன். 2. A lascivious person, one blinded by love, காமமிக்குடையோன். காமாரி, s. Siva as the enemy of Kama, சிவன். (p.) காமி--காமியன் s. A lascivious person, a voluptuary, காமாதுரன். காமுற, inf. To desire, wish for, விரும்ப. 2. To love sexually, ஆசைப்பட. 3. To lust for, to be lascivious, மோகமுற. (p.) 60)
சரளி
caraḷi (p. 166) s. Practising the seven tones or notes in music; also, the notes as disposed on the gamut, சத்தசுரப்பயிற்சி; [ex சரளம், order.] 2. [prov. improp. for] சளி.] Phlegm in the chest or throat, கோளை. (c.) சரளிகற்க--சரளிபழக--சரளிபாட, inf. To learn to sing by the gamut, to practise the tones in music. சரளிப்பதம், s. A lyric composed so as to have the notes of the gamut intervene between the different lines or forms of rhythm. சரளியலங்காரம், s. Exercising the voice in the seven tones with changes or varieties. Worshiping of God, divine worship. தெய்வயானை, s. [improp. தெய்வானை.] A female of Swerga nurtured by the elephant ஐராவதம், and afterwards married to the god Skanda. தெய்வயானைகாந்தன், s. Skanda as husband of Devayanai. தெய்வவணக்கம், s. Divine worship. 2. Invocation, &c., of some god at the beginning of a treatise. தெய்வவிசுவாசம், s. Confidence or faith in God. 2. நெஞ்சு
neñcu (p. 279) s. The mind, the heart; [in popular use.] Consciousness, thought, reason, judgment and will, மனம். 2. Conscience, மனச்சாட்சி. 3. Breast, bosom, chest, மார்பு. 4. Throat, தொண்டை. 5. (fig.) Boldness, courage, daring heroism, தைரியம். 6. Audacity, venturousness, துணிவு. (c.) மறவாதேநெஞ்சே. Forget not O my soul! எனக்குநெஞ்சைக்கரிக்கிறது. I feel a nausea in the throat. இத்தனைநெஞ்சுனக்கிருக்கிறதோ. Are you so bold? நீசெய்ததுஎன்னெஞ்சிலிருக்கிறது. What you have done is remembered. நெஞ்சிலேமிதிக்கிறான். He treats me with great disrespect. நெஞ்சைத்தட்டிப்பார். Ask your own breast. நெஞ்சையொழித்தொருவஞ்சகமில்லை. There is no fraud in which the heart is not concerned. To be choked, or stifled in the throat. நெஞ்சடைப்பு--நெஞ்சடைவாதம், s. Obstruction in the chest, ஓர்நோய். நெஞ்சழிதல், v. noun. Failing or being overwhelmed, as the heart with sorrow, or fear. 2. Loss of consciousness, through sorrow, fear, drunkenness, &c. 3. Being overcome with lust; losing self-control. நெஞ்சறிய, inf. [as an adverb.] Consciously. நெஞ்சறியப்பொய்சொல்லலாமோ. Can you knowingly lie? நெஞ்சறிவிளக்கம், s. A treatise. நெஞ்சன், s. [in combin.] A hard-hearted person. See கன்னெஞ்சகன், வன்னெஞ்சகன். 2. [prov.] A bold, daring person, துணி வுடையோன். 3. A person of self-importance, இடும்பன். நெஞ்சாங்கட்டை, s. The breast-bone, as நெஞ்செலும்பு. 2. A log placed across the breast of a corpse to prevent its rising while burning, பிணத்தின்நெஞ்சுக்கட் டை. 3. (fig.) A plot to destroy one, தூராலோசனை. இதுவுனக்குநெஞ்சாங்கட்டைக்கோ. Is this for your breast log? a curse imprecating death. நெஞ்சாங்குலை--நெஞ்சாங்கொழுந்து, s. The viscera. 2. See குலை. நெஞ்சாங்குழி--நெஞ்சுக்குழி, s. The pit of the throat. நெஞ்சிடித்தல், v. noun. Throbbing of the heart, from fear, &c. நெஞ்சிலேகல்--நெஞ்சிற்கல், s. (fig.) A heavy calamity, பெருந்துக்கம். நெஞ்சிலேகல்லுப்போட்டீர். You have put a stone in my breast, used in lamentation for the dead. நெஞ்சிலேதெண்டல், v. noun. [prov.] Affecting the breast--as wind, spasm, or cramp, நெஞ்சிற்றடுக்க. நெஞ்சிளைக்க, inf. To become fearful, timid, cowardly. நெஞ்சிற்பாரம், s. (fig.) Burden or weight of responsibility oppressing the heart. 2. Sorrow of heart. நெஞ்சுகரிப்பு--நெஞ்சுக்கரிப்பு, v. noun. A nausea in the throat. நெஞ்சுகாய, inf. To become dry, gnawing, &c., as the breast in disease, causing thirst, &c. 2. [prov.] To faint as the heart through sorrow, fear, &c. நெஞ்சுக்கட்டு-நெஞ்சுக்கோழை, s. Pectoral disease from phlegm, as asthma. நெஞ்சுக்குத்து--நெஞ்சுவலி, s. Pain in the chest. நெஞ்சுதட்ட, inf. To tap the breast in defiance, as a challenge. 2. To tap the breast with a boast of doing an exploit. நெஞ்சுதுடித்தல், v. noun. Throbbing of the heart from fear. 2. Sympathizing with one in affliction, பரிதாபப்படல். நெஞ்சுத்தடிமல், s. Catarrh seated in the breast, cold and cough. நெஞ்சுத்துணிகரம்--நெஞ்சுத்துணிவு, s. Boldness of heart, heroism, intrepidity. நெஞ்சுநெஞ்சென்றுகுத்துதல், v. noun. Striking the breast with the tips of the fingers, in bewailing the dead, &c. See மார்படித்தல். நெஞ்சுநோ, s. Pain in the breast. 2. (fig.) Grief of heart. நெஞ்சுபக்கிடுதல், v. noun. Being struck with sudden fear or sorrow. நெஞ்சுபதறுதல், v. noun. Fluttering of the heart at the sight of a distressed object, of unjust suffering in another, or of danger of injustice to one's self. நெஞ்சுபுண்ணாக--நெஞ்சம்புண்ணாக, inf. To be grieved, wounded at heart. நெஞ்சுப்பள்ளம், s. [prov.] Pit of the stomach. நெஞ்சுரம், s. Bold-heartedness. நெஞ்சுரப்பானவன், appel. n. A hardhearted man. See உரம். நெஞ்சுவறட்சி, s. Dryness of the chest when cough causes no expectoration. நெஞ்சுவிடுதூது, s. A poem in which the heart is personified as a messenger to a lover, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். 2. One of the fourteen treatises of the Agama philosophy. See சைவசித்தாந்தம், under சித்தாந் தம். நெஞ்சுறைப்பு, s. Boldness of heart, intrepidity. நெஞ்செரிதல், v. noun. Envying, பொ றாமைப்படுதல். நெஞ்செரிப்பு, v. noun. Nausea from eating to excess, or from eating acids, sweets, &c. 2. Pain in the stomach, heart-burn. 3. (fig.) Envy, பொறாமை. நெஞ்செலும்பு, s. The sternum. See எலும்பு. நெஞ்சைக்கல்லாக்க, inf. To harden one's own or another's heart. நெஞ்சைக்குமட்டல், v. noun. Nausea. See குமட்டு. நெஞ்சைப்பிடிக்க, inf. To take by the throat. நெஞ்சைப்பிளக்க, inf. To split the breast. 2. (fig.) To cause great grief. நெஞ்சையுவட்ட, inf. To loathe. See உவட்டு, v. நெஞ்சோர்மம், s. பூசை
pūcai (p. 329) s. Worship, homage to superiors, or adoration of the gods, with the proper ceremonies, ஆராதனை. W. p. 548. POOJA. 2. Food, eatables, given to religious mendicants, மயேசுரபூசை. 3. [ironically.] A good flogging, அடி.-- Note. பூசை is two-fold: 1. அந்தரியாகபூசை, internal or mental worship; 2. பகிரியாகபூசை, external worship. The four special seasons for the கிரியாபூசை, at the temples are பிராதக் காலம், at dawn; 2. மாத்தியானிகம், at midday; 3. சாயங்காலம், at sunset; 4. அர்த்த சாமம், at midnight. Two other seasons are observed in some temples, at nine in the morning, and nine at night. பூசாகாலம், s. Time of offering puja, ஆராதனைவேளை. பூசாசாரி, s. A priest, one who offers puja, at small fanes not Brahmanical; an exorcist. See பூசாரி. பூசாபலம்--பூசாபலன், s. Merit of puja. பூசாபலன்பண்ணினவன், appel. n. One who receives in the present life, the reward of merit in a former state. பூசாமுகம்--பூசைமுகம், s. Presence of the puja. பூசாவிதி, s. A directory for puja. பூசைகாண, inf. To attend on or be present at, the performance of puja. பூசைகொடுக்க, inf. To give eatables to religious mendicants. 2. [in irony.] To give a good flogging. பூசைத்திரவியம், s. Materials for puja. பூசைநைவேத்தியம், s. puja and oblations. பூசைபண்ண, inf. To perform puja. பூசைபுனர்சமஸ்காரம், s. A repetition of a ritual ceremony. பூசைபோட, inf. To offer puja to the cruel gods or goddesses. 2. To give one a flogging. 3. To consume food, &c. பூசைப்பரிசாரகன், s. An assistant to the officiating priest. பூசைப்பெட்டி, s.
