Hindu caste in the time of Menu. according to the சூடாமணிநிகண்டு was as follows 1. பிராமணர், Brahmans, the sacerdotal caste--reputed to have sprung from the face of the god Brahma; 2. சத்திரியர் or க்ஷத்திரியர், the royal or military caste--said to have sprung from his shoulders; 3. வைசியர், Vaisya caste as sprung from his thighs. This class is threefold; (a) கோவைசியர், herdsmen. (b) தனவைசியர், the mercantile caste including செட்டிகள். (c.) பூவைசியர், the agriculturalists embracing வேளாளர். 4. சூத்தி ரர், Sudra caste, embracing artificers and other servile tribes, supposed to have sprung from Brahma's feet. Of these eighteen are named, but the number is much greater. See குடிமை.--Note. 2. All the Tamil authorities, except the Nighandu, make the கோவைசியர் and பூவைசியர் including the வேளாளர் as the fourth or சூத் திரர் caste, and all inferior to these as சங்கர சாதி or mixed caste.--Note. 3. Brahmans call the கோவைசியர் and the பூவைசியர், சற்சூத்தி ரர் or superior Sudras, and the சூத்திரர் they call தற்சூத்திரர் or real Sudras. எந்தச்சாதியாடுவேணும். What kind of sheep do you want? நான்குபதினெட்டுச்சாதி. A mixture of the castes, high and low, (lit.) the four and eighteen castes intermixed, in contempt. சாதிக்குத்தக்கபுத்தி. The different degrees of intellect that characterize the respective castes; commonly spoken of inferiors. சாதியந்தப்புத்திகுலமந்த ஆசாரம். A genuine European, or one of pure European descent. அன்னியசாதி, s. Foreigners, low castes, tribes, &c. 2. (அள.) Foreign species, not of its own species, பிறவினம். கீழ்சாதி, s. One of a superior caste. சாதியாசாரம், s. Habits, customs, manners, professions, &c., of the caste. சாதியீனன், s. One of low caste, an out-caste. சாதியையிழுக்க, inf. To expatiate or dwell upon the low parentage of another. சாதியைவிட, inf. To break caste. சாதிவருணாச்சிரமம், s. [com. சாதிவ ருணாச்சிரம்.] The caste, class, religious order, &c.,--Note. This word is sometimes used as synonymous with சாதியா சாரம். சாதிநீலம், s. A genuine sapphire.-Note. All the gems, metals, &c., are in like manner distinguished. சாதிக்குதிரை, s. cūḷāmaṇi (p. 201) s. One of the two wonderful gems of Swerga--as சூடாமணி; [ex Sa. Choola, a crest.] சூளாமணிநிகண்டு--சூடாமணிநிகண்டு, s. The most popular Tamil vocabulary in use, written in poetry by a professor of the jaina religion, probably a thousand years ago, before their persecution and banishment by the prevalence of the Brahmanic system. 22)

To pass round one another--as combatants, or as birds, &c., in a circle, சுற்றிச்சுற்றிவர. 3. To make ornamental, astrological or mystic diagrams, commonly of a circular figure, யந்திரம்வகுக்க. மண்டலவிதி, s. Directions for making diagrams, for worship, &c. மண்டலபுருடன், s. [also called வீரமண் டலவன்.] A Jaina ascetic equally eminent as a poet and lexicographer. His poetic lexicon சூடாமணிநிகண்டு, outshines all similar productions in Tamil. He also wrote an epic poem in honor of Argha, ஓர்நிகண்டாசிரியன். மண்டலாகாரம், s. A circular figure, course, &c., வட்டவடிவம். மண்டலாபிஷேகம், s. A daily anointing of an idol for forty days, after the கும்பாபிஷேகம் or other ceremony. மண்டலார்த்தம், s. Semicircle, அர்த்த கோளம். 2. Semidiameter, பாதிவிட்டம். மண்டலீகர், s. [pl.] Kings, sovereigns of a limited reign, அரசர். (சது.) மண்டலேசன், s. An emperor, an independent monarch, உலகாதிபதி; [ex ஈசன்.] மண்டலேசுரன்--மண்டலேச்சுவரன், s. An independent sovereign. 2.
