Machine, engine, any piece of mechanism; mechanism of the body or otherwise; the spring in a machine; that which gives impulse, momentum, effect, &c.--as the helm of the ship, the lock of a gun, &c., இயந்திரம். 2. Ingenious contrivance, puzzle, சூட்சவேலை. 3. Stratagem, artifice, artful trick, உபாயம். 4. Point, gist, hinge, substance of a thing, அரும்பொருளடக்கம். 5. A secret, a mystery, இரகசியம். 6. Rule, canon, definition, precept, axiom, formula. இலக்கணசூத்திரம். 7. W. p. 94. SOOTRA. Guide, clue, directory, key, index, குறிப்பு. 8. Proposition, doctrine, predicated dogma, கொள்கைச்சூத்திரம். 9. Thread, yarn, twine, line, cord, பஞ்சிநூல். --Note. Rules in Garmmar or other works are of six kinds: 1. பிண்டச்சூத்திரம், the opening of a subject by giving an abstract of the work. 2. தொகைச்சூத்திரம், a synopsis, the divisions in brief, their number, &c., a general rule. 3. வகைச்சூத்திரம், an analysis with general divisions; particular rules. 4. குறிச்சூத்திரம், definitions, &c., demonstrative rules. 5. செய்கைச்சூத்திரம், directory, as in grammar, for permutation, elision, &c., connective rules. 6. புறனடைச்சூத்திரம், supplementary rules to obviate objections; give reasons, explanations, &c., respective rules. Thess are sometimes reduced to two, குறிச்சூத்திரம் and செய்கைச்சூத்திரம். சாத்திரத்தைச்சுட்டுச் சதுமறையைப் பொய்யாக்கி சூத்திரத்தைக்கண்டுசுகம்பெறுவதெக்காலம். When shall the shastras be burnt, the four Vedas proved false, and I through a knowledge of the mystery, be made happy? சூத்திரக்காரன், s. An ingenious or curious artist, an engineer, சூட்சவேலைக்காரன். 2. A man of fine parts, of quick perception, ready wit, &c., சூட்சபுத்தியுள்ளவன். 3. A man of good tact, management, economy, கெட்டிக்காரன். சூத்திரக்கயிறு, s. The concealed strings of a puppet. 2. The strings of a purse, a bag, &c. (Compare சூட்சக்க யிறு.) 3. Any thing that puts a machine in motion. 4. The unseen line or spring of creature action, as moved by the divine hand in every event of life, கடவுளது சூட்சம். சூத்திரதாரி, s. The man who manages the springs, strings. &c., of a puppet, பதிமையாட்டி. 2. God--as moving all things, கடவுள். (p.) சூத்திரநிலை, s. The arrangement of rules in grammar, or other scientific or literary works; being of four kinds: 1. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, rules following each other in a regular order. (See ஆறு.) 2. சிங்க நோக்கு, rules having reference to those preceding and following. (See சிங்கம்.) 3. தவளைப்பாய்த்து, a rule referring to the next but one preceding or succeeding. (See தவளை.) 4. பருந்தின்வீழ்வு, a rule referring to several other rules distant from each other. See பருந்து. சூத்திரப்பா, s. [com. நூற்பா.] A simple, easy kind of metre, a species of அகவல். being of a didactic or prosaic metre, adapted to treatises of instruction. The நன்னூல், திவாகரம், பிங்கலந்தை and other works are written in this style. சூத்திரப்பதிமை--சூத்திரப்பாவை--சூத் திரப்பிரதிமை, s. A puppet moved by springs, strings, &c. 2. Creatures--human especially--as influenced by the Supreme Being in all their actions. சூத்திரப்பதிமையாட்டுகிறவன், appel. n. A puppet player. 2. (fig.) A subordinate who having gained the mind of his superior directs it at his own pleasure. சூத்திரப்புறனடை, s. Note appended to a rule, &c., ina literary or scientific work. சூத்திரப்பெட்டி, s. A box whose lock is a puzzle. சூத்திரமாட்ட, inf. To put the machine in operation. (c.) சூத்திரமாயிருக்க, inf. To be in the form of a rule, a text, a mystery or contrivance. சூத்திரமானகனவு, s. Ingenious theft, artful fraud. சூத்திரர், s. Artificers, mechanics, engineers, architects, carpenters, &c., தச்சர் முதலானோர். 2. See சூத்திரன். சூத்திரம்வைக்க, inf. To contrive plans. சூத்திரவேலை, s. tṭṭu (p. 222) v. noun. Knock, tap, stroke, pat, rap, தட்டுகை. 2. Breaking, knocking, patting, தட்டல். 3. Scarcity, straits, extremity, குறை. 4. Drawing near, கிட்டுகை. 5. Warding off, averting, நீக்கல். 6. Evasion, prevarication, புரட்டு. 7. A dexterous performance or man&oe;uvre, உபாயம். 8. Stalk of grain, பயிர்த்தாள். 9. Striking against, collision, முட்டுதல். 1. Frustration, thwarting, விலக்கு. 11. Opposition, check, impediment, தடை. 12. Getting money by deception, swindling, பித்தலாட்டம். 13. (fig.) A cunning remark, a repartee, an insinuation, சூத்திரப்பேச்சு. 14. Patting, மெய்ப்பரிசத் திலொன்று. 15. Publishing by striking a gong, &c., தாளம்போடல்.--Note. In many of these meanings the word is used in cant. (c.) அவனுக்குநல்லதட்டு. He had a good profit. சாப்பாட்டுக்குஇப்போதுஅதிகதட்டு. Now a days, I am much straitened for food. ஒருதட்டுத்தட்டிவிட்டான். He has warded it off, acquitted himself well, given a gentle blow. ஒருதட்டுத்தட்டியிருக்கிறார். He has said something to frustrate the matter, or thrown in a word, &c. [prov.] தட்டிலும்வீச்சிலுங்காரியம்பார்க்க. To make a display and shift the expense on others. தட்டிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க. To support one's self at another's expense. தட்டுக்காரன், s. A rogue, a cunning fellow. 2. An evader, a prevaricator. தட்டுத்தட்ட, inf. To give a tap. 2. To evade. 3. To thwart or frustrate. 4. To act dexterously. தட்டுத்தடவல், v. noun. As தட்டல்த டவல், which see. தட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be destitute, to be in straits. செலவுக்குத்தட்டாயிருக்கிறது. We are in want of the means of subsistence. தட்டுக்கொட்டு, v. noun. [prov.] Exterior show without accomplishing one's wish. 2. A bauble, gew-gaw. 3. Living by stratagem, &c. தட்டுத்தடக்கு, v. noun. Hesitation, impediment. தட்டுத்தடக்கில்லாமல்வாசிக்கிறான். He reads fluently. தட்டுத்தாவரம், s. [prov.] Resort, resource, refuge, புகலிடம். தட்டுப்பட, inf. To be hit, to be struck--commonly accidentally. 2. To be tapped or beaten as a drum, cymbal, &c. 3. To lack, to be wanting--as stores, money, rain, &c. 4. To be felt by contact. 5. To be stopped in progress, as a vehicle, a performer, &c., To be understood. அவன் என்கண்ணுக்குத்தட்டுப்படவில்லை. I have not seen him any where. இப்போதுதான்எனக்குத்தட்டுப்பட்டது. Now I understand it. தட்டுண்டுபோக, inf. To be beaten off, scattered. 2. To be all threshed out--as rape-seed. 3. To be thwarted, to fail, as an expected good. 4. To be upset, overturned. 5. To exchange commodities clandestinely, and fraudulently. தட்டுக்கெட, inf. To be greatly alarmed, to stand aghast. 2. To be in extremity, in destitution. 3. To suffer loss. தட்டுக்கெட்டுத்தடுமாறிப்போனான். He was greatly surprized. தட்டுக்கெட்டசமாசாரம், s. A complicated business. தட்டுக்கேடு, v. noun. nūl (p. 279) s. Thread, yarn, string, line, இழை. 2. A literary or scientific treatise, கல்விநூல். 3. Science, system, literature, சாஸ்திரம். 4. Deliberation, counsel, mature consideration, எண்ணம். (சது.) 5. The badge-string of the sacerdotal, the royal and of some mechanical tribes, பூணூல். 6. A string tied round an image in a Roman Catholic Church, in token of a vow, பொருத்தனைநூல். 7. A wedding-badge, தாலிநூல். 8. Carpenter's or mason's line, எற்றுநூல்.--In combination it takes grammatical changes like நால். Of நூல் or sacred learning there are நூ three: 1. முதனூல், an original scientific work regarded as divine, the Vedas; 2. வழிநூல், a work derived from and agreeing with the original, being an enlargement, as the Vedanta; 3. சார்புநூல், a work following the original, secondary, but differing in some particulars; collateral writings, as the Adwitta. நூற்பலகல். A widow; a woman divested of her wedding-badge, தாலியறுத்தவன். நூலிழை, s. A single thread. நூலிழைக்க, inf. To reel yarn, to disentangle yarn from the skein and wind it on the reel, to unwind yarn. நூலுண்டை, s. A ball of thread, yarn, cotton, &c., நூலுருண்டை. 2. A weaver's bobbin with the yarn, தார்க்கெண்டை. நூலுத்தி, s. The proper arrangement of words, as தந்திரவுத்தி. நூலுந்தாலியும். The wedding string and badge. நூலுரைப்போன், appel. n. A teacher. நூலுரையுணர்வோர், appel. n. [pl.] Learned men, கற்றோர். நூலுறிஞ்சி, appel. n. A weaver. (in contempt.) நூலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a treatise. See உறுப்பு. நூலெடுக்க, inf. Spinning a thread and letting itself down, as a spider, or caterpillars. நூல்விதி, s. Injunction, prescription or rule laid down in books. நூல்விரிவு, s. Amplification or detail of a work. நூற்கயிறு, s. String made of thread. நூற்கருத்து, s. The sentiments of an author. See கருத்து. 2. The author's meaning of any given passage. நூற்சுழி, s. A skein of thread. நூற்குச்சு, s. A tassel of cotton thread. நூற்குஞ்சம், s. A number of threads composing the warp in a loom. See குஞ்சம். 2. A skein. நூற்குற்றம், s. The ten faults or defects in a literary composition. See under குற்றம். நூற்சரடு, s. Cotton thread for stringing beads. நூற்சார்பு, s. Sentiments inculated in a work, &c. A kind of அகவல் verse, commonly employed by lexicographers, சூத்திரப்பா. 2. Warp in weaving, தறியிற் பிணைக்கும்பா. நூற்பாவகவல், s. The நூற்பா verse. நூர்புலவர், s. [pl.] Persons of accomplished or distinguished learning. நூற்புறத்திணை, s. Proof from established authority; a term used by Beschi in Tonnool. நூற்புறனடை, s.
