acai (p. 7) s. An-expletive, அசைநிலை. 2. Accent, இசைப்பிரிவு. 3. (c.) The cud, இரை மீட்பு. 4. (p.) Metrical syllable, செய்யுளுறுப்பா றினொன்று. There are two kinds of அசை, viz. (a.) நேரசை, when there is a single syllable, ஓரலகு. 1. When there is a long vowel, as ஆ. 2. When the vowel is short, as ழி. 3. When the short vowel is joined with a mute, as வெள். 4. When the long vowel is joined with a mute, as வேல். (b.) நிரையசை, When there is a compound syllable, ஈரலகு. 1. When two short vowels are joined, as வெறி. 2. When a short and long vowel are joined, as சுறா. 3. When two short vowels are joined with a mute, as in நிறம். 4. When a short and long vowel are joined with a mute, as விளாம். அசைச்சீர், s. A foot of one syllable, as நாள் and மலர். அசைச்சொல்--அசைநிலை, s. An expletive, அசைநிலைச்சொல். அசைபோட--அசையிட--அசை வெட்ட, inf. To chew the cud, to ruminate. அசையடி, s. One of the members of கலிப்பா. கலிப்பாவினோருறுப்பு. அசையந்தாதி, s. A poem in which the last syllable of one verse and the first of the succeeding are the same. 2)

uṟuppu (p. 68) s. A limb, or member of the body, parts, features, அவயவம். 2. Body, உடல். 3. Part (of a whole) component part, member, subdivision, department, section, பங்கு. 4. Just proportion, symmetry, அங்கலட்சணம். 5. Abundance, மிகுதி. 6. Bough, மரக்கொம்பு. 7. Closeness, narrowness, நெருக்கம். 8. A copy of single letters set for a child to imitate, மேல்வரிச்ச ட்டம். 9. Title deed, registry, &c. of land, காணியாட்சிப்பத்திரம். அந்தக்காணிக்கோருறுப்புமில்லை. There is no security, title, &c. for that land. உறுப்படக்கி, s. A tortoise, a turtle --from the contraction of its limbs, ஆமை; [ex உறுப்பு, et அடக்கி, from அடங்கு contraction.] உறுப்பணங்கெட்டவன். [prop. உ றுப்பினங்கெட்டவன்.] An ill-shaped, maimed, ugly person. 2. (Rott.) உறுப்பினங் கெட்டவன், A foolish, a witless fellow. உறுப்பற்றவன்--உறுப்புக்குறைந்த வன். An ill-formed, or deformed person, அவயவவீனன். 2. An ill-bred person. ஒழுக்கமில்லான். உறுப்பில்பிண்டம், s. The embryo. See எச்சம. உறுப்புக்குறைவிசேடம், s. [in rhetoric.] A species of the figure called விசேடம். உறுப்புத்தோல், s. A species of deer-skin which, according to the shasters, the Brahman should fasten to his sacred cord, நூலிற்கட்டியமான்றோல். உறுப்புநலனழிதல், v. noun. Decaying or withering--as the beauty of a female, on account of the absence of her lover, அங்கத்தழகுகெடுதல். உறுப்புமயக்கம், s. A prodigy, a monster, one whose limbs are redundant, defective, &c. See எச்சம். உறுப்புள்ளவன், s. A vigorous, well-formed man, அங்கலட்சணமுடையவன். 2. A man of enterprising character, qualified for business, திறமையுடையான். 3. A man of good conduct, அறத்துறுப்புடை யான். 4. A man of good manners, ஒழுக்கமுள்ளவன். காணிக்குறுப்புப்பண்ண, inf. To get a title deed passed for land. அகத்துறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts of virtue; they are eight in number. 1. ஐயப்படாமை, Freedom from doubt and uncertainty. 2. விருப்பின்மை, Liberation from the desires of the senses. 3. வெ றுப்பின்மை, Freedom from antipathy, prejudice, &c. 4. Exemption from illusion, confusion of mind, error, ignorance, &c. 5. பழியைநீக்கல், Freedom from evils. 6. அழி ந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், Restoring the ruined or apostate. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், Expounding or elucidating the nature of virtue. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, Great kindness, or benevolence to all sentient creatures. நூலுறுப்பு, s. One of the members or component parts of a treatise. மதிலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a fortification. திருவுறுப்பு, s. A jewel worn by bridegrooms upon their foreheads--a sign of the goddess இலக்குமி. செய்யுளுறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts or elements of poetry, as given in காரிகை, they are six, viz.: 1. எழுத்து, Letters forming thirteen classes. 2. அசை, Metrical syllables of two kinds. 3. சீர், Metrical feet of thirty kinds. (See. சீர்.) 4. தளை, Combination of feet one with another, of seven kinds. 5. அடி, Metrical lines determined by the number of feet of which they are composed, five kinds are given. 6. தொடை, Rhyme, forty-three species are enumerated. சீட்டினுறுப்பு, s. The style or different parts of a writ, or deed, &c. 5)

Tinkling ornaments for the feet, காற்றண்டை. 17. A club, a bludgeon, த ண்டாயுதம். (சது.) 18. A pole for the shoulder in carrying burdens, காவுதடி. (நிக.) 19. Gold, பொன். 2. Noise, sound, ஒலி. 21. Wielding the shield as a fencer, சிலம்பம். The metrical feet are thirty, divided into five classes, viz.: 1. உரிச்சீர், or ஆசிரியவுரிச்சீர், feet peculiar to the அகவல் verse--as (a.) தேமா, foot of two simple syllables, a spondee. (b.) புளிமா, one compound and one simple syllable; an iambus. (c.) கருவி ளம். Two compound syllables, a pyrrhic. (d.) கூவிளம். One simple and one compound syllable, a trochee. The names serve also as models for the kinds of feet respectively. They are names of trees and their fruits. 2. வெண்சீர், or வெண்பாஉரி ச்சீர். Feet peculiar to வெண்பா verse; as (a.) தே-மாங்-காய். A foot of three simple syllables. (b.) புளி-மாங்-காய். One compound and two simples. (c.) கரு-விளங்--காய். Two compounds and one simple; an anap&ae;st. (d.) கூ-விளங்-காய். A simple, a compound and a simple. 3. வஞ்சியுரிச்சீர், or வஞ்சிச்சீர். Feet peculiar to வஞ்சி verse; as (a.) தே-மா ங்-கனி. A foot of two simple syllables and one compound. (b.) புளி-மாங்-கனி. One compound, one simple, and one compound; an amphibrach. (c.) கரு-விளங்கனி. Three compounds, a tribrach. (d.) கூவிளங்-கனி. One simple and two compound syllables. 4. பொதுச்சீர். Feet of four syllables peculiar to வஞ்சி verse; there are sixteen of them; the models for these are formed by adding respectively, தண்-ணி ழல், தண்-பூ, நறும்-பூ, நறு-நிழல் to the terms employed in the உரிச்சீர். 5. ஓரசைச்சீர். A foot of a single syllable; as (a.) நாள். A foot of one simple syllable. (b.) மலர். A foot of a compound syllable.--Note. 1. One use of the last two is to end the வெண்பா verse. --Note. 2. Sometimes feet answering to காசு, instead of நாள், and பிறப்பு instead of மலர், are employed to end the வெண்பா verse, i. e., the addition of குற்றுகரம் or short உ to the foregoing; and rarely the full உ, or முற்றுகரம் is found. சீராயிருக்கிறேன். I am in a good state. சீரழிக்க, inf. To disturb, subvert, pervert. 2. To ruin, demolish. 3. To disparage one's character. (c.) சீராக, inf. (adverbially.) Orderly, decently, properly, soberly, consistently, circumspectly, moderately, temperately, discreetly. சீராகநடக்க, inf. To act consistently, &c. சீராடிக்கொண்டுபோதல், v. noun. [prov.] The going of a married girl to her father's house for redress of grievances from her husband's family, especially from her mother-in-law. (c.) சீரானநடை, s. A moderate pace. 2. Good moral character without excess. சீரிழுக்க, inf. To pervert good circumstances. (R.) சீரிட--சீர்செய்ய--சீர்கொடுக்க, inf. To give house-hold utensils, &c., to a daughter when married. 2. To put in order, சீர்செய்ய. சீருக்குவர--சீரிலேவர, inf. To be altered for the better, to come to a right or natural state. சீரைத்தேட, inf. To desire wealth. (Avv.). சீரைவிசாரிக்க, inf. To inquire after one's health. (R.) சீர்குலைய, inf. To be disordered, deranged. 2. To be lost--as character, ruined--as circumstances; to be disgraced. 3. (fig.) To be defloured, கற்பழிய. சீர்குலைச்சல், v. noun. Disorder, immodesty. (R.) சீர்கெட, inf. To degenerate, deteriorate, to become tarnished, corrupt, spoiled. சீர்கெட்டவன்--சீர்கேடன், s. A worthless person, a wretch. 2. A sloven. சீர்கெட்டவாழ்வு, s. Unhappy, domestic life. சீர்கேடு, s. Disorder, derangement, irregularity. 2. clumsiness, awkwardness. 3. See சீபதி. சீர்பாதம், s. The divine feet, the illustrious feet--spoken reverently for the person. See சீபாதம். சீர்பெற, inf. To attain prosperity. சீர்போட, inf. The things to be regarded in the choice of the first word of a poem, addressed to a hero or heroine: 1. மங்கலம், an auspicious word. 2. சொல், a word natural, elegant, unequivocal, and that will scan well. 3. எழுத்து, a word composed of an odd number of letters. 4. தானம், formed of letters taken from any of the first three of the five classes of தானம் (which denote the five stages of life), counting from the first letter of the name of the hero. 5. பால் formed of masculine or feminine letters according to the sex of the person. 6. உண்டி, composed of benign letters. 7. வருணம், of letters appropriate to the caste. 8. நாள், of letters belonging to an asterism, which has no malign aspect on that of his birth. 9. கதி, of letters of the first two families or species. 1. கணம், a word appropriate to some of the first four of the eight கணம், as it regards the feet, &c. செய்யுட்போக்கு, v. noun. The poetic தளை are of seven kinds embracing four classes. I. ஆசிரி யத்தளை. connexion of ஆசிரியம் verse of two species. 1. நேரொன்றாசிரீயத்தளை, combination of simple syllables in the ஆசிரியம் connexion, or of one simple ஆசிரியம் foot, with another. 2. நிரையொன்றாசிரியத்தளை, combination of compound syllables, or the connexion of one compound ஆசிரியம் foot, with another. II. வெண்டளை, connexion of வெண் பா verse, also of two species. 1. வெண்சீர் வெண்டளை, combination of genuine வெண்சீர் foot, or of one வெண்சீர் foot with another foot, biginning with a simple syllable 2. இயற்சீர்வெண்டளை, combination of simple, or ஆசிரியம் feet, or connexion of an ஆசிரியம் foot ending with a compound syllable with another foot beginning with a simple syllable, or vice versa. III. கலித்தளை, connexion of the கலிப்பா verse, being single, viz.; that of வெண்சீர் foot ending with a syllable with another foot beginning with a compound syllable. IV. வஞ்சித்தளை, connexion of வஞ்சி verse of two species. 1. ஒன்றியவஞ்சித்தளை, combination of compound syllables, or of one வஞ்சி foot with another foot beginning with a compound syllable. 2. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, combination of a compound with a simple syllable, or of one வஞ்சி foot with another beginning with a simple syllable. For syllables and feet and their different species, see அசை and சீர். வளைபட்டகைமாதொடு மக்களெனுந் தளைபட்டழியத் தகுமோதகுமோ. To be bound, confined, restrained, கட்டுப்பட. தளைப்பூட்ட--தளைபோட, inf. To fetter, to shackle. தளைப்பொருத்தம், s. Harmonious combination of the தளை, in verse, தளையினிணக்கம். தளையவிழ, inf. To blossom as a flower, பூமலர. 2. To be unbound, to be unrestrained, கட்டவிழ. தளைவைக்க, inf. [prov.] To invest one with the office of உடையார். தளைவார், s. toṭai (p. 262) s. The thigh, in which sense, for butcher's meat, are, பெருந்தொடை, the upper part of the thigh; பின்னந்தொடை, a hind-quarter; முன்னந்தொடை, a fore-quarter of a sheep, &c. 2. Flower-garland. பூமாலை. 3. Bow-string, நாண். 4. Arrow, அம்பு. 5. Surrounding wall, bulwark, fortification, மதிற்சுற்று. 6. Block projecting from a wall to support a beam, சுவர்ப்புறத்து நீண்டவுத்திரம். 7. A bunch of flowers, பூங் கொத்து. 8. Verse, poetry, பாட்டு. 9. A series, train, connexion, succession, tissue, composition, commonly poetic, தொடர்ச்சி. 1. Rhyme in poetry, செய்யுளுறுப்பினொன் று, [ex தொடு. (v.)--There are five classes of rhyme, each containing eight verieties, and three single ones making fortythree in all. The five classes are: 1. மோ னை, மோனைத்தொடை, the rhyming of the initial letter of the line or foot through the stanza. The varieties of this class are: 1. அடிமோனை, முதன்மோனை, rhyming of the initial in the foot of each line. 2. இணைமோனை, of the first two feet in each line. 3. பொழிப்புமோனை, of every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉமோனை, of the first and fourth foot. 5. கூழைமோனை, of all the feet in the line but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாய்மோனை, in every foot bu the second. 7. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்மோனை, of all the feet but the penultimate. 8. முற்றுமோ னை, in every foot. II. இயைபு, இயைபுத்தொ டை, the rhyming of the last feet or letters in the lines. The varieties are: 1. அடிஇயைபு, முதலியைபு, rhyming of the last letter of the first foot in each line. 2. இணையியைபு, of the last letter of the first two feet. 3. பொழிப்பியைபு, of the last letter of every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉவியைபு, of the last letter in the first and fourth. 5. கூழை யியைபு, of the last letter in each foot except the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாயியைபு, in the last letter of every foot but the second. 7. கிழ்க்கதுவாயியைபு, of the last letter in every foot but the penultimate. 8. முற்றிழைபு, of the last letter in all the feet. III. எதுகை, எதுகைத்தொடை, rhyming of the second letter of every line in the stanza, comprising, 1. அடியெதுகை, முதலெதுகை, rhyming of the second letter of the first foot in each line. 2. இணையெதுகை, in the second letter of the two feet. 3. பொழிப்பெதுகை. that of every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉவேதுகை, that of the first fourth. 5. கூழையெது கை, that of all but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவா யெதுகை, that of all but the second. 7. கீழ்க்கதுவாயெதுகை, that of all but the penultimate. 8. முற்றெதுகை, in the second letter of all the feet. IV. முரண், முரண்டொ டை, a kind of poetry consisting of words taken in contrast, or by antithesis, as இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவிந்தன்னவெண் மணலொருசிறை, by the side of the waters, dark as the wide spread nocturnal gloom, the white sand appeared, as if the moonlight had formed itself into heaps. Of this there are eight varieties, as 1. அடிமுரண்,முதன் முரண், contrast in the first foot of the lines, with one another. 2. இணைமுரண், that in the first two feet of the lines. 3. பொ ழிப்புமுரண், that in every other foot of the lines. 4. ஓரூஉமுரண், that in the first and fourth. 5. கூழைமுரண், contrast in all but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாய்முரண், in all but the second. 7. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்முரண், in all but the penultimate. 8. முற்றுமுரண், in all the feet. V. அளபெடைத்தொடை, rhyme formed by அளபெடை, or lengthening a letter for a verse, which are of eight varieties, as 1. அடி யளபெடை, முதலளபெடை, forming rhyme by அளபெடை, in the first of each line. 2. இணையளபெடை, in the first two feet. 3. பொ ழிப்பளபெடை in every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉவள பெடை, in the first and fourth. 5. கூழையள பெடை, in all but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாயள பெடை, in all but the second. 7. கீழ்க்கது வாயளபெடை, in all but the penultimate. 8. முற்றளபெடை, in all the feet. VI. அந்தாதி, அந்தாதித்தொடை, rhyme by the occurrence of the last syllable, word or words in the stanza as the first of the sacceeding. VII. இரட்டைத்தொடை, by the repetition of the same in every foot through the line. VIII. செந்தொடை, poetry of numbers without rhyme, a kind of blank verse. For further particulars, see these in their respective places. தொடைமுறியஅடிக்க, inf. To break one's thigh in beating him. தொடைமேல்தொடைபோட, inf. To sit with one thigh on the other (deemed impolite.) தொடைதட்டிவெள்ளாழர், s. [in burlesque.] Barbers. தொடையகராதி, s. A division of சது ரகராதி, which see. தொடையிலேதட்ட, inf. To strike the thigh in token of bravery, defiance, admiration, surprize, &c. தொடையைநிமிண்ட, inf. To pinch the thigh as a punishment of a school boy, &c. தொடைவாழை, s. A tumor on the thigh near the groin. 2. [prov.] A shrub whose leaves are used to cure the tumor. தொடைவாழைப்புறப்பட்டுக்கிடக்கிறான். He lies sick of the thigh-tumor. தொடைவிகற்பம், s. The different species or varieties of rhyme. 46)
