angkcālaikkārṉ (p. 5) s. A village servant, the same as கிராமப்பணிசெய்வான், who by order of the head of the village calls a meeting of the inhabitants, procures things wanted. 7) *

arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

iṭumpṉ (p. 45) s. The name of an inferior deity--one of the generals in Skanda's army, குமரனேவல்செய்வோன். 2. The name of a giant, ஓரரக்கன். இடும்பி, s. A giantess, the sister of இடும்பன், ஓரிராக்கதி. இடும்பிகொழுநன், s. Bhima--one of the Pandavas, வீமன். 99)

iṉi (p. 57) adv. Now, immediately, presently, இப்பொழுது. 2. Henceforth, hereafter, பின்பு. 3. A particle of place, from this limit, onward, இப்பால். (நன்னூல்.) இனிக்கள்ளமில்லை. There is no more injurious, offensive matter, &c., no longer any alloy, spuriousness, &c. இனிக்காரியமில்லை. There is no further business. There is no more hope for him--said of a dying man, &c. இனிநம்மெல்லை. We are now close on our limit; we approach our boundary. இனிப்பிழைக்கிறதா? Can he possibly survive? (he will certainly die). இனிப்பேசு. Now you may speak, there is no longer any restraint. இனிப்போதும். Now there is enough. இனிமேல். Hereafter, at some future time. இனியார்? Who else? இனியாற்றாது. I am unable to proceed further (I am altogether exhausted). இனியெங்கேபோவாய்? Whither will you go next? What further resource is left you? இனியென்னசெய்வாய்? What can you do further? இனிவேண்டாம். It is needed no longer, or no more is required. பண்டறியேன்கூற்றென்பதனையினியறிந்தேன்.... Formerly I knew not, but now I know who Yama is. (குறள்.) 46)

immeṉl (p. 47) . An imitative sound, இம்--as expressive of haste, அனுகர்ணவோசை. 2. A particle of quickness, விரைவுக்குறிப்பு. (p.) இம்மெனவந்துவிட்டான். He is come already. இம்மெனுமளவுநீங்காதென்செய்வானேங்கினானே. (The spectre) not being separated, from him, even for a moment, he was frightened, finding no means to be rid of it. (திருவிளை.) 24)

iyṟṟu (p. 48) கிறேன், இயற்றினேன், வே ன், இயற்ற, v. n. To do , make, effect, perform, execute, bring about, cause to take place, discharge a duty or obligation, exercise or use an art, செய்ய. 2. To transact, manage affairs, superintend, cause or excite one to do a thing, நடத்த. 3. To destine, appoint, assign, விதிக்க. (p.) இயற்றலுமீட்டலுங்காத்தலும். Devising means to increase the finances, collecting and keeping them. எல்லாத்தவமுமியற்றி. Performing every species of austerity. ஐந்துவேள்ளியுமியற்றி. Offering the five daily oblations. இறந்தவர்கள்காமுறுமிருங்கடனியற்றி. Duly discharging the debt demanded by departed spirits. இயற்றுதற்கருத்தா--இயற்றும்வினை முதல், s. [in grammar.] The agent, the actor in distinction from ஏவுதற்கருத்தா, commander-as செய்வதன், distinguished from செய்வித்தவன். இயற்றும்வினை, s. ilēcu (p. 55) s. Smallness, minuteness, நொய்மை. 2. Lightness in weight or moral character, buoyancy, கனமின்மை. 3. Easiness of attainment, that which is not difficult, எளிது. 4. Weakness, feebleness, பல வீனம்--as இலேசானபொறுப்பு. a feeble prop or support. 5. urimai (p. 64) s. Propriety, peculiarity, proprietorship, appropriateness, property or quality of a person or thing, உரியதன்மை. 2. Heritage, inheritance, hereditary and unalienable rights, சுதந்திரம். 3. Relationship, the ties of consanguinity, இனம். 4. Natural or correlative duty, obligation, கடமை. 5. Love, affection, intimacy, tender regard, friendship, சிநேகம். 6. Liberality, privilege of familiarity, freedom taken or permitted on the ground of relationship, friendship, acquaintance, &c., இஷ்டம். 7. Claim, right, உரித்து. 8. (p.) A wife, மனைவி. உரித்து. A symbolic verb used as a noun with meanings similar to those of உரிமை, being peculiar to a person, or thing--as duty, obligation, property, quality, &c., உரியது. 2. s. Relative duty and care as of a child to his parents, the teacher to his pupils, the Guru to his disciples, the husband to his wife, and vice versa, கடமை. 3. Affection, பட்சம் உரித்தாக்கிக்கொள்ள, inf. To appropriate to one's self, procure a right in, to make one's own, உரிமையாகச்செய்ய. 2. To secure the friendship of one, நட்பாக்கிக்கொள்ள. உரித்தாளி--உரித்தானவன், s. Proprietor, owner, heir, சுதந்திரன். 2. One near of kin, இனமானவன். சபைக்குரித்தானவன். A person entitled to a place in an assembly. என்னுடைமைக்குரித்தானவன். The heir of my property. உரிமைக்கஞ்சி--உரிமைச்சோறு, s. Food prepared for the relations of a deceased person on the day of his death. 2. [prov.] Rice-water poured into the mouth of a dying person as the last token of respect. உரிமைக்கடன், s. The duties and obligations of near relations to perform funeral rites, and to show respect to a deceased person, பிரேதத்திற்குரியவர்கள் செய்யுங்கடமை. 2. The duty of a child to support his father in sickness or other extremity, &c., புத்திரன்பிதாவுக்குச்செய்யுங் கடமை. 3. Obligations of the heir to pay the debts of a deceased person, அவன வன்செய்யவேண்டியகடமை. உரிமைக்கட்டு, s. Consanguinity allowing a marriage connexion, இனக் கட்டுப்பாடு. 2. Preservation of one's rights as a relative. உரிமைக்கலியாணம், s. Marriage within the prescribed degrees of consanguinity. உரிமைக்காணி, s. Inherited land. உரிமைக்காரர், s. Heirs, சுதந்தி ரர். 2. Natural guardians, responsible relatives, உரியவர்கள். உரிமைசெய்ய, inf. To discharge correlative duties, கடமைசெய்ய. 2. To perform funeral rites, கருமாதிசெய்ய. உரிமைத்தத்துவம், s. [prov.] Right or letters of administration to the estate of a deceased person, சுதந்திரதத்துவம். 2. Right of guardianship in a case of minority, lunacy, &c., பாத்தியம். உரிமைபாராட்ட--உரிமைகொண் டாட, inf. To own the obligations one is under to another, on the ground of consanguinity, friendship, religion, country, &c., and to act accordingly, சுதந்திரங் கொண்டாட. 2. To converse with another on the ties of friendship, consanguinity, &c., common between them either to show that such ties exist, or for social enjoyments, சம்பந்தங்கொண்டாட. உரிமைபேச, inf. To urge one's rights, claims, &c. on the ground of consanguinity, usage, occupation, previous services, acquaintance or otherwise, சுதந்திரங்காட்டிப்பேச. உரிமைப்பங்கு, s. Share of an inheritance, சுதந்திரப்பங்கு. உரிமைப்பாடு, s. Relative authority, obligation, &c., உரியகடமை. உரிமைப்பிள்ளை, s. An adopted child entitled to the property of the adopter, சுவிகாரபுத்திரன். உரிமைப்பெண், s. A female in the proper degree of consanguinity to be taken in marriage, விவாகஞ்செய்வதற் குரித்தானவள். உரிமைமண், s. [prov.] Earth thrown on a corpse at its burial, by the near relatives, பிரேதக்குழியிலுரியவர்கள்போ டுமண். உரிமையாட்சி, s. Possession or right of possession of property devolving on a child, which, had the parents been living, would have belonged to them, சுதந்திரவாட்சி. உரிமையின்மை, s. Want of right or privilege. உரிமையெடுக்க, inf. To take possession, to enjoy or claim one's share of an inheritance, produce, &c. உரிமைவழி, s. Consanguinity, lineage, ancestral connection, சம்பந்தமுறை. 2. Inheritance or right of possession from ancestors, தொன்றுதொட்டுவருஞ்சுதந்தி ரம். உரிமைவிட, inf. To give freedom to, to manumit a slave. சொல்லுரிமை, s. A fine emphatic expression. உரியது, s. That which is proper to, peculiar to, tending to, liable to, exposed to, deserved, deserving, worthy of, appropriate to, obnoxious to, உரித்தா னது. இததற்குரியசொல். This is the appropriate word for it. உரியதண்டனை, s. Condign punishment, deserved chastisement. உரியபொருள், s. The primary meaning of a passage, உரியவர்த்தம். 2. Property in which one has a peculiar right, சுதந்திரமானதிரவியம். உரியர்--உரியார்--உரியோர், s. Proprietors, உடையவர்கள். 2. Heirs, சுதந்திரர். 3. Near or responsible relations, சம்பந்த முடையார். 4. The learned, அறிஞர். அன்பிலாரெல்லாந்தமக்குரியர்அன்புடையர்என்பு முரியர்பிறர்க்கு. Those destitute of love live only to themselves, whereas they who possess it are ready to give up their lives (lit. bones) for others. (குறள்.) உரியவன்--உரியன்--உரியோன், s. Proprietor, owner, உடையவன். 2. Heir, சுதந்திரன். 3. A near relation, இனத் தான். 4. One worthy of, deserving of, தக்கவன். 5. (p.) Husband, கணவன். கொலைக்குரியவன், s. One who is worthy of death. இழவுக்குரியவன், s. One whose duty it is to perform funeral rites. எனக்குரியவன், s. One near to me by the ties of consanguinity, friendship, relation, caste, country, &c. உரியள்--உரியாள், s. A wife, மனையாள். (p.) 17)

uḷ (p. 67) . The root of a symbolic verb signifying being, which, in poetic usage is complete in its inflections--as உளேன், or உள்ளேன், I exist, &c. 2. The third person singular of the inferior class (see உண்டு), and the participle with its appellatives are the only parts in common use. --Note. The participle and its derivations are joined to nouns to form adjectives and appellatives and to show the possession of the quality indicated--as உள்ளகாரியம், a real thing, fact. உளர். They are--as அவருளர். உள்ள, rel. part. Existing, which exists, is real, genuine, essential. உள்ளகதை, s. A real story, an authentic narrative, a fact, a reality. உள்ளது, appl. n. The truth, it is true, உண்மை. 2. That which exists, உண் டானது. உள்ளதற்குள். Among the few there are. உள்ளதற்குள்ளேயிவன்சமர்த்தன். He is the most competent among them. 2. He is tolerably clever. உள்ளதுசொல்லு. Speak the truth. உள்ளதுரியதெல்லாம். The whole of one's property to the last mite. உள்ளதைமறையாதே. Conceal not the truth. உள்ளதோஇல்லதோ? It is true or not? உள்ளநாளுள்ளமட்டும். All this time, or always--a phrase indicating dissatisfaction. உள்ளபடி. Truly, really as to right, according to the actual state. உள்ளபடிமுடியும். It will end right. உள்ளபணிவிடைசெய்வேன். I will do whatever service you have. என்னாயிசுள்ளநாள்மட்டும். As long as I live. உள்ளபசுமை, s. Real truth, ஐய மற்றஉண்மை. 2. Real prosperity, மெய்வா ழ்வு. உள்ளபிள்ளை, [vul. prov.] A child of rich parents--the opposite to வறிய பிள்ளை. உள்ளமை, s. [prov. prop. உண்மை.] Truth, reality, sincerity, probity. உள்ளவன், s. A moneyed man, a rich person, பொருளுடையவன். 2. A proprietor, உரியவன். குணமுள்ளமனிதன், s. A man of good disposition. பணமுள்ளவன், s. A man of money. உள்ளளவும், [prop. உள்ளவளவும்.] For ever, as long as aught shall be, the whole period of the world's existence, இருக்குமட்டும்.--Note. In this and similar sentences formed with this word, terms of universality are implied. நானுள்ளளவுமும்மைப்பிரியேன். I will not forsake you as long as I live. உள்ளார், s. Those who are (present, &c.), இருப்போர். மண்ணுள்ளார், s. Terrestrial inhabitants. விண்ணுள்ளார், s. The celestials. 53)

uẕai (p. 67) s. Cerebral sounds--one of the seven musical tones, சிரத்தாற்பிறக்குமிசை. 2. One of the strings of the lute, or guitar, or the tone of a lute, யாழினோர்நரம்பு. 3. A deer, a fawn, மான். 4. A place, இடம். 5. A form of the seventh case, ஏழனுருபு. 6. Side, பக்கம். (p.) உழைநின்றீரும். You also who stood by-(கல்லா.) எவ்வுழைச்செல்கின்றோரும். Those who move in every place; i. e. all persons. அவனுழைச்சென்றேன். I went to him. உழையர்--உழையோர், s. Ministers of state, kings' counsellors, மந்திரி கள். 2. Servants, ஏவல்செய்வோர்; [ex உழை, side.] 28)

ūṭu (p. 69) s. [as உள்.] The inside, that which is intermediate, between, நடு. (சத. 18.) 2. [vul.] Wool, thread woven across the warp, தார்நூல்.--Note. Commonly ஊடு as an affix governs the dative--as அவர்களுக்கூடேவந்தான், he came between them. இந்தஅலுவல்களுக்கூடேயிதையுமெப்படிச்செய்வே ன். How can I possibly do this in the midst of so much business? கனவூடும். Even in a dream-- (பார.) ஊடறுக்க, inf. To cut through, separate and pass through, cleave, to sunder--as an arrow; to force one's way through people, jungle, beasts, &c., உள்ளறுக்க. 2. To determine between two parties, to decide differences, settle amicably, வழக்குத்தீர்க்க. ஊடாட, inf. To go about--as a domestic in a house, அகத்திலுலாவித்திரிய. 2. To frequent, பலகாற்பயில. 3. To deal, or be familiar with, பழக. 4. To be conversant with a subject--as of science, art, &c., கல்விபயில. பாரைக்கூடாடாதபாறைபசுமரத்தின்வேருக்கூடாடி விடும். A rock that cannot be moved by a crow-bar gives way to the roots of a tree. முட்டரோடாடியநட்புக்கருங்காலிக்கட்டையூடா டியகால். Friendship with the base is like a hard block thrown against the knee. மயிரூடாடாநட்புச்சிறிதுபொருளுடாடக்கெடும்... Friendship so close as not to admit of even a hair-like interruption may be destroyed by pecuniary dealings. ஊடாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To search, examine, &c., to look into, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. கல்வியிலூடாடிப்பார். Look into learning, learn. ஊடாட்டம், v. noun. Familiarity, intercourse, intimacy, பழகுகை. ஊடாட்டம்பண்ண, inf. To be familiar, have intercourse, with, பயிற்சி பண்ண. ஊடுசெல்ல, inf. To pass through a crowd, a jungle, &c. ஊடுதாக்க, inf. To oppose with firmness, பின்னிடாமலெதிர்நிற்க. 2. To compare two things with each other with regard to their strength. ஒன்றோடொன்றூடுதாக்க, inf. To oppose each other. ஊடுபற்ற, inf. To burn within a lamp--as wick when the oil is out, உள்ளேபற்றியெரிய. ஊடுபோக்க, inf. To run through, cause to pass through, உருவச்செய்ய. 2. To decide between parties, settle amicably, வழக்குத்தீர்க்க. ஊடுருவ, inf. To penetrate--as rays, air, a weapon; to transpierce, உள் ளேயுருவ. 2. v. n. To insinuate itself into, உட்செல்ல. ஊடுருவத்தைக்க, inf. To transpierce, to stitch through. ஊடூடே, adv. Here and there, irregularly interspersed, frequently, often, every now and then. 44)
