ஊமன்
ūmṉ (p. 70) s. A large kind of owl, commonly ஊமத்தங்கூகை. 2. A dumb person, ஊமை. (p.) சேமமேவேண்டித்தீவினைபெருக்கித்தெரிவைமாருரு வமேமருவியூமனார்கண்டகனவி லும்பழுதாயொழிந்தனக ழிந்தவென்னாள்கள். A burial place not enclosed. (p.) சவக்காலை, s. [prov.] A grave-yard, a cemetry; [ex காலை, enclosure.] சவக்கிரியை, s. The funeral rite performed by a Siva guru, when practicable, and not by a brahman, before the burning or burial. 2. Funeral rites, ceremonies, &c., in common. சவக்குழி--சவவறை, s. A grave, a sepulchre. சவங்கட்ட, inf. [prov.] To tie up a corpse in a winding sheet with three strips of cloth. சவங்கிளப்ப, inf. To disinter, tear up a corpse--as dogs, jackals, &c. சவச்சேமம், s. Interment, (lit.) a secure disposal of the corpse. 2. Preparation of a corpse for taking it to the funeral pile or grave. (c.) சவத்துக்குமாரடிக்க, inf. To beat the breast at a funeral, in grief, &c.; also used as a curse. சவந்தளம்ப, inf. To be termulous, as the corpse when carried; sometimes supposed to be caused by a demon shaking it, and regarded as ominous of other deaths in the family. சவப்பெட்டி, s. A coffin. சவம்விழ. May some one of your family die. (lit.) to fall, as a corpse. 12) *

cupam (p. 194) s. Fortunateness, propitiousness, auspiciousness, luckiness. (See அஷ்டசுபம்.) 2. Happiness, felicity, gratification, spiritula delight, பாக்கியம். 3. Goodness, excellence, favourableness, நன்மை. 4. Congratulation, benediction, வாழ்த்து. 5. One of the twenty-seven astrological yogas, இருபத் தேழுயோகத்தொன்று. W. p. 852. S'UB'HA.-Note. The opposite is அசுபம். சுபகதி, s. Bliss, beatitude; [ex கதி.] (p.) சுபகரன், s. (fem. சுபகரி.) A beneficent person, உபகாரன். (p.) சுபகருமம்--சுபகன்மம்--சுபகாரியம், s. Good, auspicious deeds, &c.--as சுகன் மம். சுபகாலம், s. [in astrol.] An auspicious time; a joyful, prosperous time, நல்லகாலம். சுபக்கிரகம், s. An auspicious or benign planet--as the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus. (p.) சுபக்ஷேமம், s. Sound health--as சுக சேமம். சுபசகுனம், s. A good omen, நற்சகு னம். சுபசொரூபம், s. Benignant appearance or manifestation, &c. (p.) சுபசோபனம், s. Joyful tidings, or events--as of the birth of a child, or of a girl's becoming marriageable. (c.) சுபசேதி--சுபசெய்தி, s. Joyful tidings, happy events. (p.) சுபதினம், s. (Astrologically.) A fortunate day, நல்லநாள். 2. (R.) A mode of salutation somewhat like 'Good day' but in implies, that the meeting is fortunate. (Modern.) சுபத்தானம்--சுபஸ்தானம், s. [in astrol.] An auspicipus or favorable position of a planet; [ex தானம்.] (p.) சுபமங்களம், s. Auspicious benediction, by brahmans, &c. சுபமஸ்து, s. Salutation, success, prosperity; a sanscrit term of benediction at the opening of a treatise, &c., மங்களச்சொல்; [ex அஸ்து.] சுபமிருத்து, s. A good or auspicious death. (p.) சுபயோகம், s. Auspicious yogas, being eighteen out of twenty-seven. (See யோகம்.) 2. The conjunction of an auspicious day of the week, phase of the moon and lunar constellation. (p.) சுபவசனம்--சுபவாக்கு--சுபவாசகம் --சுபவார்த்தை, s. Auspicious language; agreeable, or propitious words. சுபவாதனை, s. Blissful experience of the soul; divine illumination, spiritual enjoyment. (p.) சுபவாரம், s. Auspicious days of the week. சுபாசுபம், s. Good and ill-luck, auspicious and inauspicious appearances, commonly in reference to weddings, and funeral, நன்மையுந்தீமையும்; [ex அசுபம்.] சுபாதிசயம், s. Favorable tidings, good news, சுபக்ஷேமம்; [ex அதிசயம்.] தங்கள்சுபாதிசயங்களை எழுதியனுப்பப் பிரார்த்திக்கி றேன். I beg to be informed of your welfare. 18) *

cēmam (p. 208) s. (also க்ஷேமம்.) Preserving, protection, safety, preservation, காவல். 2. Safeguard, defence, security, தஞ்சம். 3. Hoard, treasure buried, things reserved, புதைபொருள் 4. Binding and shrouding a corpse for burning or interment, சவச்சேமம். 5. (c.) Happiness, well-being, welfare, இன்பம். 6. A secure place, a room, well guarded, அரணானவிடம். 7. A prison, cage, dungeon, or subterraneous prison, காராக் கிரகம். 8. A guard-house, சிறைச்சாலை. சேமம்புகினுஞ்சாமத்துறங்கு. Though you are in a prison sleep only three hours. சேமக்காரன், s. [prov.] A guard. 2. A trusty, confidential person. 3. A thrifty. careful person. சேமங்களைவிசாரிக்க, inf. as சேதிவிசா ரிக்க.) To inquire after one's welfare. சேமங்கொள்ள, inf. [prov.] To smear a place with cowdung, lay a corpse there and dress it, for the funeral pile, or the grave. சேமகாலம், s. Time of prosperity or plenty--opposite to சாமகாலம். சேமதருமம், s. Substantial, or permanent merit, virtue, &c.--oppos. to மா யாதருமம். சேமத்திரவியம்-சேமநிதி, s. Gold, gems, &c, kept with great care. (p.) சேமத்தில்வைக்க, inf. [in ancient history.] To put in custody--as children born under an unlucky horoscope, who are kept from the sight of their parents a certain number of years, according to the prescription of an astrologer. 2. To keep in safe custody. சேமப்படை, s. Weapons in reserve. சேமப்பொருள், s. [prov.] A deposit. சேமமாய்வைக்க, inf. To keep with care. 2. To place one in good circumstances. சேமம்பண்ண, inf. To deposit in a safe place. சேமாதிநயம்--சேமசமாசாரம், s. News of welfare. காரியசேமம், s. Circumstances, welfare, &c, as inquired into and reported. 15)

tayā (p. 224) s. Favor, clemency, compassion, கிருபை. W. p. 4. DAYA. (Used only in combination.) தயாசமுத்திரம், s. A sea of grace. தயாசீலம், s. Grace, graciousness. தயாசீலன், s. A benevolent, gracious person. தயாபரன், s. (voc. தயாபரா.) The gracious god. 2. (fem. தயாபரி.) A beneficent man. நரசீலதயாபரர். God, who is bountiful towards men. தயாமூர்்த்தி, s. The incarnation of benevolence. தயாவிருத்தி, s. Increase of grace, கிரு பைமிகுதல். 2. The fourteen acts of beneficence, தயாவிருத்தி, 14.--The first seven relate to the soul, the other seven to the body. Of the soul; 1. களாபடனம், education, communication of knowledge, கல் விபயிற்றுகை; 2. வியாதாகாரம், comfort to the afflicted, consolation of mind, துயர்தீர்க்கை; 3. நிர்க்கத்தண்டனம், relieving from punishment, தண்டம்நீக்குகை; 4. சந்தேகவாரணம், removing doubts, contingency, &c., ஐயந் தேற்றுகை; 5. அன்னியகுணசகனம், hearing of the superiority of others without envy, and enduring their infirmities with patience, பிறந்குணத்தழுக்காறின்றிப்பொறுத்தல்; 6. பரதிருதுனயோகம், forgetting the evils inflicted by others and seeking to do them good, பிறராற்செய்யப்படுந்தீமையைமறந்தூன்றிநி னைக்கை; 7. பார்த்ததேவப்பிராத்திதம், praying for the prosperity and good of others, பிறர்நிமித்தந்தேவனைவழிபடுதல். Those regarding the body or சத்தாங் கோபகராம் are: 1. அன்னம், food, giving boiled rice, உணவு; 2. பானம், drink, குடிக்க நீர்; 3. அம்பரம், raiment, வஸ்திரம்; 4. மந்திரம், a dwelling, இடம்; 5. தாசபாலனம். preservation from slavery, அடிமைகாத்தல்; 6. காராமயத்திரிதயமோசனம், removing the three afflictions of captivity, சிறைநோய் மூன்றுந்தீர்த்தல். viz.: restraint from the calls of nature, மலசலவாதை; corporal punishments, சரீரதண்டனை; chains, fetters, விலங்கு போடல். 7. சவச்சேமம், burial, பிரேதமடக்கல். There are eight other kinds of benevolence. 1. பிறர்க்குப்பொருள்வரவையுவத்தல், rejoicing in a neighbor's wealth; 2. பிறர்செல்வம்பொறுத்தல், being content in seeing a neighbor's welfare; 3. பிறர்கருமத் திற்குடன்படுதல், assisting in other's business, with interest; 4. தீமைக்கஞ்சல், fearing to do evil; 5. பிறர்கருமமுடிக்கவிரைதல், hastening to assist others; 6. பிறரையந் தீர்த்தல், removing other's doubts; 7. நன் மைகடைப்படித்தல், preserving in doing good; 8. பிறர்துயர்க்கிரங்கல், commiserating the distress of others; sympathizing with the afflicted. 19) *

putai (p. 324) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To be buried interred, சேமிக்கப்பட்ட. 2. To sink as the foot, or a wheel, in mud, to enter, to penetrate--as an arrow, புதிய. 2. To be hidden, as treasure; to be covered, concealed, மறைய. 3. To be latent, or obscure--as a meaning, ஆழ. (c.) புதைபொருள் s. A hidden treasure. 2. An obscure speech or writing. புதையல், v. noun. Being hidden. 2. A hidden treasure, நிட்சேபம். 3. That which is hidden in the ground, or the place for hiding, சேமம். புதையலெடுக்க, inf. To discover or take up hoarded treasure. புதையலெடுத்தவனைப்போலே. As happy as one who has discovered a hoard. புதையல்காத்தபூதம். Like a goblin who watches treasures for another--spoken of a rich miser. புதைவாணம், s. A kind of rocket. 21)
