āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. Rules for making commentaries. There are five according to சதுரகராதி, viz.: 1. பதம். 2. பதப்பொருள். 3. வாக்கியம். 4. வினா. 5. விடை. உரையிற்கோடல், v. noun. Additions to a text by a commentator--one of the உத்தி. உரையெழுத, inf. To write a commentary. உரைவன்மை, s. Eloquence, oratorical power, சாதுரியப்பேச்சு. 2. etukai (p. 73) s. Initial rhyme, commonly occurring in the second letter of every line in the stanza. (See தொடை.) 2. [vul.] (fig.) Agreement, union, consonance, similarity, பொருத்தம். (p.) தலையாகெதுகை, s. In rhyme, similarity of the first class in which all the letters except the initial of the first foot in each line through the stanza are the same--as சொற்போர்புரிவர்நான்மறை யாறங்கமுணர்ந்ததொழுகுலத்தோர், விற்போர்புரிவர் நெடியசிலையிராமனனையவிறல்வேந்தர், பொற்போர் புரிவர் பிறர்பொருளுந்தம்போற் பேணிப்புரிவணிகர், நெற்போர்புரிவரந்நகரில்வேளாண்குலத்து நெறியி னரே. இடையாகெதுகை, s. Consonance of a medial kind in which the second letter only ryhmes--as அகரமுதலவெழுத் தெல்லாமாதி, பகவன்முதற்றேயுலகு. கடையாகெதுகை, s. Consonance of an inferior order including every kind except the two given above. ஆசெதுகை, s. An exception to the general rule of எதுகை; i. e. when the second letter of the first line is ய, ர, ல, or ழ, it may be omitted in the following lines when necessary. வழியெதுகை, s. The agreement of the second and third letters in the first, second, and sometimes the third feet in every line through the stanza. நெடிலெதுகை, s. The rhyming of the long consonants in a poem--as ஆவாவென்றேயஞ்சினராழ்ந்தாரொருசாரார், கூகூ வென்றேகூவிளிகொண்டாரொருசாரார், மாமாவென் றேமாய்ந்தனர்நீந்தாரொருசாரார், ஏகீர்நாகீரென்செய் துமென்றாரொருசாரார். இனவெதுகை, s. The rhyming of the same class of consonants in a poem. It consists of three kinds: 1. வல்லின வெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the வல்லினம் consonants, உ-ம். தக்கார்தகவிலரென்பதவரவ ரெச்சத்தாற்காணப்படும். 2. மெல்லினவெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the மெல்லினம் consonants, உ-ம். அன்பீனுமார்வமுடைமையதுவீனுநண்பென் னுநாடாச்சிறப்பு. 3. இடையினவெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the இடையினம் consonants, உ-ம். எல்லா விளக்கும் விளக்கல்ல சான்றோர்க்குப் பொய்யாவிளக்கேவிளக்கு. 51) *

oṭṭu (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒட்டினேன், வேன், ஒட்ட, v. a. and v. n. To stick on, to stick up, to glue on, cause to cleave or adhere, பொருத்த. 2. To apply, resort, betake one's self to a person for support, protection, to come or be near, or in contact with, to lean on or join one's self to a thing, சார. 3. To use qualifying terms, phrases, adjuncts, &c., அடைகொடுக்க. 4. To lay a wager, to gamble, பந்தயம்வைக்க. 5. To permit, suffer, allow, let, இடங்கொடுக்க. 6. To increase length or breath by addition, to add to, சேர்க்க. 7. To grow lean, be withered, shrunk, &c., to have the skin stick to the bones, be shrivelled as a fruit, &c., சுருங்க. 8. To stand near a wall, a pillar, &c., in order to over-hear, to way-lay, &c., விசேஷங்கேட்கவொளித்துநிற்க. சுட்டமண்ணும்பச்சைமண்ணுமொட்டாது. Burnt earth will not adhere to that which is fresh. ஒட்டி யுலர்வாருறவு. That is friendship which adheres to and suffers with one, lit. which dries with one as the flowers in the tank. இதுனக்கொட்டுமோ. Will this unjust gain, &c., abide with you? உலகத்தோடொட்டவொழுகல். Acting conformably to the world. (குறள்.) மரத்தோடொட்ட. To hide one's self behind a tree. தோலெல்லாமெலும்போடொட்டிப்போயிற்று..... The skin cleaves to the bones. ஒருவனையொட்டிப்பிழைக்க. To subsist by means of another. அவனைவரவொட்டும். [Contracted in colloquial use to அவன்வரட்டும்.] Let him come. சொல்லவொட்டான். He will not permit me to speak. ஒட்டஅறுக்க, inf. To cut off short or level with the ground--as corn; to cut off altogether, to sever--as an ear, a tail, &c. ஒட்டஇணைகக, inf. To nail in close. ஒட்டக்கட்ட, inf. To tie short. 2. To tuck or gather up the clothes well so that no part may hang down. 3. To tie a necklace close to the neck. ஒட்டப்பட்டினிபோட--ஒட்டப் போட, inf. To make a patient fast in order to cure his disease, or to put on short commons a disobedient person for disciplinary purposes. ஒட்டவடிக்க, inf. To drain quite off. ஒட்டவிட, inf. To let one join or have access to one. 2. To set cocks together preparatory for fighting. ஒட்டாக்கொற்றி, s. A cow cruel to its calf. 2. A woman unkind to her child or inattentive, unyielding, &c., to her husband. ஒட்டாமலடிக்க, inf. To neglect one who has sought protection. ஒட்டார்--ஒட்டலர், s. Foes, persons that will not unite, பகைவர். (p.) ஒட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To cleave, to adhere, &c. 2. To supply a word, &c., understood or wanting to complete the sense. இதனையெல்லாவிடங்களிலுமொட்டிக்கொள்க... Apply this word in every similar instance. ஒட்டித்தப்பியிருக்க, inf. To survive, be left, &c., after a general destruction, sacking clearing, to be out of sight, unnoticed. ஒட்டிப்போக, inf. To go jointly or together. 2. To wax lean, pine. ஒட்டியபுண், s. A contagious eruption. ஒட்டியமேளம், s. A kind of drum. ஒட்டுவியாதி, s. An infectious disease, தொத்துவியாதி. ஒட்டுறவு, s. Near relationship, great friendship. அறுந்தகாதொட்ட, inf. To join an ear that has been torn or cut. பந்தயமொட்ட, inf. To lay a wager. ஒட்டல், v. noun. Sticking, adhering, pasting, &c. 2. s. Shortness. ஒட்டல்வயிறு, s. A shrunk belly. ஒட்டற்காது, s. Short ears or ears with the lobes not hanging. ஒட்டு, v. noun. Adhesion, contact, attachment, conjunction, friendship, cement, சேர்க்கை. 2. Being close to a wall, tree, &c., generally for some bad purpose, lurking to over-hear, to ensnare birds, &c., பதிவிருக்கை. 3. Bidding more--as at a sale, விலையுயர்த்திக்கேட்கை. ஒட்டுக்கண், s. Inflamed eyes with the lids adhering. ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சல், s. A contagious fever, தொத்துக்காய்ச்சல். ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சலாய்க்காய, inf. To have a contagious fever. ஒட்டுக்குஞ்சு, s. A small young one of birds, சிறுகுஞ்சு. 2. [prov.] A small white louse, பேன்குஞ்சு. ஒட்டுக்குடி, s. A family or person, lodging or dwelling in another's house, garden, &c. ஒட்டுக்கும், adv. Wholly, entirely, முழுதும். ஒட்டுக்கேட்க, inf. [prop. ஒற்றுக் கேட்க.] To over-hear by listening in a hiding place, &c. ஒட்டுக்கொடுக்க, s. inf. To allow access, to be accessible. 2. To comply with, to yield, grant one's request, இடங் கொடுக்க. ஒட்டுடந்தை--ஒட்டுப்பற்று--ஒட் டுரிமை, s. A slight participation in an act, ஒட்டுடன்பாடு. 2. Distant relationship--as regards title to inheritance, சொற்பசம்பந்தம். ஒட்டுப்பற்றில்லாமற்போயிற்று. All friendship has ceased between us. ஒட்டுப்பற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Totally extinct, quite out, utterly exhausted. ஒட்டுத்தையல், s. Botching, mending, patching. ஒட்டுநர்--ஒட்டினர், s. Relations, friends, those connected with one, adherents, சினேகர். (p.) ஒட்டுநிற்க, inf. To lurk, wait in secret in order to over-hear. ஒட்டுப்புல், s. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல், Panicum verticillatum, L. ஒட்டுப்போட, inf. To stick on-as a piece, to insert by sticking, வட்டம் போ. 2. To lie in wait, சமயம்பார்க்க. ஒட்டுமயிர், s. Short hair in the margin, not gathered into the tie, குறுகி யமயிர். 2. Hair stuck together, or pasted--as by dancers, ஒட்டப்படுமயிர். ஒட்டுவிசேஷம், s. An ingrafted, patched up story, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. A story learned by stealth, ஒளித்துக்கேட்கும்வார்த்தை. ஒட்டுவிட, inf. To become loose, to separate as boards, &c., glued together, பொருத்தநீங்க. ஒட்டுவித்தை, s. The art of sticking persons together to the ground or otherwise by magical drugs, incantations, &c., ஓர்வித்தை. ஒட்டுவேலை, s. Joining, veneering, sticking on, patching, இணைக்கும்வேலை. 2. Deceptive work, போலிவேலை. ஒட்டுவைக்க, inf. To swear, to take an oath, ஆணையிட. 2. To set birdlime to ensnare birds, ஒட்டுகண்ணிவைக்க. 3. (Rott.) To encompass a city with trenches. 66)

Impurity; ceremonial or moral defilement--as cause of offence to the deity, of blight to plants, &c., சூதகம். 4. Reproach, stigma, charge, accusation, blame, குறை. 5. Amercement, mulct, fine, அபராதம். 6. (சது.) Sickness, நோய். முக்குற்றம், s. The three kinds of evil, incident to the soul in connexion with births, as darkening the understanding and leading to sin. 1. காமம், sexual desire, lust. 2. வெகுளி, anger. 3. மயக்கம், bewilderment, mental illusion. யாக்கைக்குற்றம், s. The five defects of the body; 1. கொட்டாவி, yawning. 2. நெட்டை, snapping the joints. 3. குறுகு றுப்பு, snoring. 4. கூன்கிடை, lying shrunk up. 5. நட்டுவிழல், nodding. அஷ்டகுற்றம், s. The eight imperfections of creatures. 1. ஞானாவரணியம், ignorance, or want of wisdom. 2. தரி சனாவரணியம், defective perception. 3. வேதநீயம், comprehensibleness. 4. மோக நீயம். subjection to the passions. 5. ஆயு, age, limited duration. 6. நாமம், having a name or describableness. 7. கோத்திரம், parentage, descent. 8. அந்தராயம். liability to impediments and accidents. The ten faults or defects in a literary composition. 1. குன்றக்கூறல், a partial statement--saying too little. 2. மிகைபடக்கூறல், redundancy-saying too much. 3. கூறியதுகூறல், tautology--repetition. 4. மாறுகொளக்கூறல், inconsistency--contradictory statements. 5. வழூஉச்சொற்புணர்த்தல், the employment of improper or inappropriate words and terms. 6. மயங்கவைத்தல், obscurity, mystification. 7. வெற்றெனத்தொடுத்தல், emptiness, barrenness. 8.மற்றொன்றுவிரித்தல், digression--introducing another subject. 9. சென்றுதேய்ந்திறுதல், gradual loss of vigor and tone. 1. நின்றுபயனின்மை, useless statements; verbosity; bombast. இமைக்குற்றங் கண்ணுக்குத்தெரியாது. The eye does not see the defect of the eyelashes; i. e. one's own errors, and those of his family and friends, are unnoticed. குற்றங்கடிய, inf. To avoid guilt. குற்றங்களைய, inf. To criticize; to be hypercritical, censorious, captious; to expose faults. குற்றத்தைமறைக்க, inf. To deny a crime; to hide a fault. குற்றந்தீர்க்க--குற்றம்பரிகரிக்க, inf. To correct faults, to free from faults; to expurgate, exculpate, absolve. குற்றந்தெரிக்க, inf. To exhibit faults; to criticize, to sift--as a literary production. குற்றப்பட, inf. To be in fault; to be found guilty, criminal, blameable. குற்றப்பாடு, v. noun. The state of being in fault; accusation, imputation. குற்றம்பார்க்க--குற்றம்பிடிக்க, inf.
