acṭṭai (p. 5) s. [priv. அ et சட்டை.] Neglect, inattention, heedlessness, recklessness, indifference, வேண்டாமை. 2. Contempt, disdain, disesteem, disrespect, மதியா மை. (c.) அசட்டைப்பண்ண, v. a. To neglect, disregard, contemn, disdain. 63)

añcu (p. 7) s. Five. See ஐந்து. அஞ்சாம்வருணம், s. The fifth caste, Pariahs, &c. அஞ்சாலியிடையர், s. [prop. அஞ் சார இடையர்.] A tribe of cowherds; whose women wear, in their marriage neck jewel, five ornaments, or ஐந்தாலி. அஞ்சாரப்பெட்டி, s. [prop. அஞ்ச றைப்பெட்டி.] A box that has five compartments, one in the middle and four surrounding, made of palmyra leaves or other materials for containing flowers, spices, &c. அஞ்சுருவாணி, s. (as அச்சுருவா ணி.) An iron bolt passing through the five tiers of a car. அஞ்சுமூன்றுமுண்டானாலறியாப்பெண்ணுங் கறி யாக்கும். Even a young girl will be able to make a curry, when she has the following three and five things, viz., புளி, souring; மிளகு, pepper; உப்பு, salt; கடுகு, mustard; and சீரகம், cumin--which are the five; and the three are நீர், water; நெருப்பு; fire; and விறகு, fire-wood--said by an angry husband to his wife when the curry is not good. பூதங்கள் அஞ்சும் அகத்தேங்கும். The five elements will laugh within themselves. (குறள்.) 43)

aṭngku (p. 7) கிறேன், அடங்கினேன், வேன், அடங்க, v. n. To obey, yield, become subject to, be subdued, கீழ்ப்படிய. 2. To shrink, become compressed, be reduced in size or vigor, be crammed into, condensed, குறைய. 3. To recede, be repressed, suppressed, restrained, ஒதுங்க. 4. To settle, subside, be laid--as dust, அமைய. 5. To be embodied, incorporated, திரள. 6. To be reduced low--as the system when near death, &c., சாக, ஒடுங்க. அடங்கல், s. All, the whole, மு ழுமை. புரமடங்கலுந்தெறுகணை. The arrow which destroyed the whole of the three cities. (In காந்தம்.) அடங்கலர்--அடங்காதார், s. Foes, insubordinate persons, பகைவர். (p.) அடங்கன்முறை, s. A book which treats of the ceremonies of the Saiva sect, தேவாரம். அடங்காப்பற்று--அடங்கார்பதி, s. A rebellious province, கீழ்ப்படியாதார் இருக் கும் ஊர். அடங்காமாரி, s. An audacious, contumacious, insubordinate woman, மு ரண்டானவள். அடங்காமை, neg. v. noun. Insubordinateness, rudeness, haughtiness, untractableness, கீழ்ப்படியாமை. அடங்காவாரிதி, s. Urine, மூத்தி ரம். 2. Sea salt, கடலுப்பு. பிராணனடங்க, inf. To faint, be in a trance as dead. 56)

aṭmpu (p. 7) s. A running flower plant, including two species, viz., ஆட்டுக்காலடம்பு, and மான்குளம்படம்பு, ஓர்கொடி. அடம்பங்கொடி--அடப்பங்கொடி, s. The above creeper. அடம்பங்கொடியுந்திரண்டால்மிடுக்கு. Even the அடம்பு creeper when several are combined will be strong, i. e. very weak persons, when several are joined together, may be strong. அடம்பம்பூ--அடப்பம்பூ, s. Its flower. 65)

aṭimai (p. 8) s. Slavery, bondage, service, தொண்டுபடுந்தன்மை. 2. Slave, servant, devotee, தொண்டானவன். (c.) அடிமைகொள்ள, inf. To receive, or use one as a slave, or servant. அடிமைபூண, inf. The four அனுபந்தம் or properties of a book to be mentioned in the preface are, விடயம். contents; சம்பந்தம், order; பிரயோசனம், object; and அதிகாரி, persons for whom intended. அனுபல்லவி, s. We experience both joy and sorrow. ஒருவன்வீட்டைப்பிறனொருவன் பத்தாண்டளவும் யாவருமறியவனுபவித்தால் அவ்வீடவனதே. If any one have the possession of the house of another for ten years, and this be generally known, the house becomes his. அனுபவிப்பு, v. noun. Enjoying, suffering, experiencing. அனுபாகம், s. (Anat.) Maxillary portion; [ex ஹநு, jaw.] அனுபானம், s. A fluid vehicle in medicine, drink taken with or after medicine. 2. An ingredient to take with, or after medicines, as sugar, &c. Wils. p. 33. ANUPANA. அனுபூதி, s. A boon or blessing obtained from the Supreme Being connected with or leading to final bliss, divine knowledge, favor, grace in reference to divine things. 2. Inference, illation-one of the modes in logic of arriving at a conclusion, as from smoke to infer the presence of fire, காரியத்தாற்காரணமறிகை. Wils. p. 34. ANUMANA. Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. Doubt, hesitancy uncertainty, conjecture, சமுசயம். அனுமானப்பிரமாணம், s. one of the eight laws of evidence, inference, காரியத்தாற்காரணத்தைக்காட்டுவது. அனுமானிக்க, inf. To neigh as a horse, குதிரைகனைக்க. 2. To doubt, hesitate, சந்தேகிக்க. 3. v. a. To imagine, infer, understand or determine by inference, காரியத்தாற்காரணமறிய. அனுமானிதம், v. noun. aṉaiya (p. 33) --அன்ன. The crude form of a symbolic verb derived from the demonstrative அ, having two distinct uses. As a term of similitude, it is an affix but regularly conjugated in two forms, being complete in each, in all it persons, varieties and uses, as a verb, a participle, a noun, &c., the same as other symbolic verbs. It also expresses likeness to the person or thing indicated by the word to which it is affixed, உவம வுருபு. 2. It is sometimes equivalent to the simple pronoun; as, அன்னான். Such a man. (p.) Singular. அனையன்--அனையேன். I am like. அனையாய்--அனையை. Thou art like. அனையன்--அனையான். He is like. அன்னான். Such a man. அன்னாள். Such a matron. அன்னது. Such a thing. Plural. அனையெம்--அனையேம்--அனையோம். We are like. அனையிர்--அனையீர். Ye are like. அனையர்--அனையார். They are like. அன்னர்--அன்னார். Such persons. அனைய--அனையன--அன்ன. They (things) are like. அனையமன்னற்கழிவுமுண்டாங்கொலோ? Can such a prince ever be ruined? பவளமனையவாய். The coral-mouthed. எம்மனோர்க்கியம்புமாறரிதே. It is not possible for mortals like me to declare, &c. மயிலன்னாய். arcṉ (p. 22) s. (plu. அரசர்.) A king, prince. இராசா. 2. A supreme master, God, எப்பொருட்குமிறைவன். 3. The planet Jupiter, வியாழம். 4. The three properties of kings; viz.: 1. தூங்காமை, decision. 2. கல்வி, learning. 3. துணிவு, prowess. அரசர்க்குக்குழு, s. The five different officers of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Soothsayers, புரோகிதர், 3. Generals, சேனாபதியர். 4. Messengers, தூதர். 5. Spies, வேயர். அரசர்க்குத்துணைவர், s. The eight assistants of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Rulers, கருமாதிகாரர். 3. Relations, சுற்றம். 4. Door-keepers, கடை காப்பாளர். 5. Citizens of his capital, நகர மாக்கள். 6. Commanders, படைத்தலைவர். 7. Cavaliers, இவுளிமறவர். 8. Warriors on elephants, யானைவீரர். அரசர்க்குறுதிச்சுற்றம், s. The five confidential servants of a king, as, Companions, நட்பர்; Brahmans, அந்தணாளர்; Cooks, மடையர்; Physicians, மருத்துவர், and Prophets, நிமித்திகர். அரசர்சின்னம், s. The twenty-one distinguishing marks of a king. See இராசசின்னம். அரசர்நால்வகையியல்பு, s.
