The first furrow in ploughing. அடிச்சீப்பு, s. The first formed and best plantains of the bunch. அடிச்சூடு, s. Heat felt in the sole of the foot when walking. அடிச்சேரி, s. Suburbs. To begin, undertake, make the first effort, effect an object, தொடங்க. அடிமடக்கு, s. [in prosody.] Repetition of a word or words with different meanings in the beginning of a line, or the repetition of a line in a verse with different meanings, சித்திரக்கவியி லொன்று, as, ஆகங்கண்டகராலற்றவாடவர், ஆகங் கண்டகராலற்றவன்பினர். அடிமடி, s. A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. From beginning to end, ஆதியந் தம். 3. Upside down, கீழ்மேல். 4. Head and foot, காலுந்தலையும். அடிமுரண்டொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. Ancient lines of ancestry, வமிசவரலாறு. அடிவரலாறாகத்தெரிதல். Understanding from the first. அடிவருட, inf. To chafe, stroke, or shampoo the legs of another. அடிவாரம், s. The foot of a hill, சாரல். அடிவானம், s. Horizon, திகாந்தம். அடிவிட--அடிவிரிய--அடிவிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To be cracked as the bottom of a chatty, &c. by use, அடியுடைய. அடிவைக்க, inf. To step, set a step, காலடிவைக்க. 2. To begin to walk as a child, நடக்கத்தொடங்க. 3. To intrude one's self into an affair, தலையிட. 4. To begin a work, ஆரம்பிக்க. மலையடிப்பட்டி, s. To be bruised, injured or hurt by pressure, or contact, அழுந்த. ஆசையண்டாதாகிலழுகையுமண்டாது. If free from desire (if it approach thee not) thou wilt be free from sorrow. ஒருவனையண்டிப்பிழைக்க, To live by one's favor. அண்டலர், s. Foes, enemies, பகை வர். அண்டல்--அண்டுகை--அண்டு தல், v. noun. The three properties of kings; viz.: 1. தூங்காமை, decision. 2. கல்வி, learning. 3. துணிவு, prowess. அரசர்க்குக்குழு, s. The five different officers of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Soothsayers, புரோகிதர், 3. Generals, சேனாபதியர். 4. Messengers, தூதர். 5. Spies, வேயர். அரசர்க்குத்துணைவர், s. The eight assistants of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Rulers, கருமாதிகாரர். 3. Relations, சுற்றம். 4. Door-keepers, கடை காப்பாளர். 5. Citizens of his capital, நகர மாக்கள். 6. Commanders, படைத்தலைவர். 7. Cavaliers, இவுளிமறவர். 8. Warriors on elephants, யானைவீரர். அரசர்க்குறுதிச்சுற்றம், s. The five confidential servants of a king, as, Companions, நட்பர்; Brahmans, அந்தணாளர்; Cooks, மடையர்; Physicians, மருத்துவர், and Prophets, நிமித்திகர். அரசர்சின்னம், s. The twenty-one distinguishing marks of a king. See இராசசின்னம். அரசர்நால்வகையியல்பு, s. The four special qualities of kings; viz.: 1. அஞ்சாமை, fearlessness, fortitude. 2. ஈகை, bountifulness. 3. அறிவு, discernment. 4. ஊக்கம், prowess. அரசர்வல்லமை, s. The four acts or powers of kings; viz.: 1. இயற்றல், making acquisitions. 2. ஈட்டல், collecting his revenues. 3. காத்தல், securing them. 4. வகுத்தல், distributing or expending them. அரசனாணை, s. The order or decree of a king, சாசனம். அரசனுயிர்காத்தோன், s. A unicorn, as the fabled protector of a king, காண்டாமிருகம். அரசன்விருத்தம், s. A kind of poem describing the country and magnificence of the king, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அரசி, s. A queen, இராசஸ்திரீ. 2. A lady, தலைவி. 42)

aṟu (p. 33) கிறது, ந்தது, ம், அற, v. n. To be parted, detached, separated; to break as a rope, அறுபட. 2. To cease, become extinct, perish, end, vanish, அழிய. 3. To be decided, ended, தீர. (c.) அற, inf. [used adverbially.] With a verb it expresses; 1. Wholly, entirely, quite, முழுதும். 2. Intensely, excessively, மிகவும். 3. Negation, being without, as குற்றமற, without fault. அறச்செட்டுமுழுநஷ்டம். Selling things too dearly will cause entire loss; i. e. avarice causes loss. அறப்படித்தான். He has learnt all perfectly. எழுத்தறவாசி. Read with distinct articulation. அறக்கட்ட, inf. To tie tightly, இறுகக்கட்ட. 2. To monopolize, ஒருமிக்கக் கொள்ள. அறக்காய, inf. To be over-dried, over-boiled, over-heated. அறக்கூட்ட, inf. To sweep clean or thoroughly. அறக்கூர்மை, s. Excessive sharpness as of a writing style. அறச்சிவப்பு, s. Deep red, extremely red. அறச்சிறியது, appel. n. The smallest. அறப்பாடல், v. noun. [commonly, அறம்பாடல்.] Composing poetry containing imprecations or spells.--Note. Verses of this kind are supposed sometimes to be made without design, and thus to injure the maker and others. அறப்பார்க்க, inf. To examine thoroughly, sift. 2. To take measures to defeat, ruin or injure one by defamation. அறமிகுந்தால், v. part. At most, at the utmost, by any means, with the greatest effort. அறமிகுந்துவந்தாலும்வரட்டும். If it must come (if no effort will avert it) let it come. அறவிளக்க, inf. To polish thoroughly. அறவூத--அறவைக்க, inf. To refine metals by fire, புடமிட. அறாவிலை, s. An exorbitant price. அறுகுறை, s. A headless body, கவந்தம். அறுந்தருணம், s. Emergency, exigency. அறுந்தொகை, s. A sum, number, &c. in dividing, in which there is no remainder. அறுவாய், s. The parting made in sawing a piece of timber. 2. The opening of a cut or wound. 3. A junction, a conjunction of two periods of time, extremity, end. 4. Deficiency, what is wanted to complete a whole; [ex அறு, parted, et வாய், opening.] அறுவாய்நிறைந்தவயிர்மதி. The bright moon whose waning is restored. அற்றறுதி, s. A complete end, entire ruin. அற்றறுதிபற்றறுதியாய்விட்டது. All communion is withdrawn. அற்றான், s. A poor man, தரித் திரன், 2. A sage, முனிவன். அற்றுப்போக, inf. To be lost, to cease to be. தடையற, inf. [used adverbially.] Without impediment. அறவு, v. noun. Cessation, ceasing, extinction. 2. Parting, separation, breach. அறவுளி, s. Incantations performed over a sick person in order to restore him. 2. Cessation, end, முடிவு. அறுதல், v. noun. Finishing, liquidating a debt. 2. s. A broken thread, string, rope, bandage, &c. அறுந்திருப்பது. 3. A mean, despicable or faulty person, உதவாதவன் அந்த அறுதலையிங்கேவரவிடலாகாது, You must not allow that vagabond to be here. தாம்புமறுதல் தோண்டியும்பொத்தல். A broken rope and a leaky water-pot. அறுதலி, s. A widow, கைம்பெ ண்; [ex அறுதல், being plucked off (the marriage jewel), et இ, fem. termination; or அறு, torn off, et தலி, contracted from தாலி, the badge of marriage.] அறுதலிமகனுக்கங்கமெல்லாஞ்சேஷ்டை. The son of a widow is mischievous throughout his whole frame. அறுதி, v. noun. End, close, termination, முடிவு. 2. Decision, decisiveness, determination--as a decisive sale, entire renunciation of a title to landed property, தீர்ப்பு. 3. s. The purchaser's possession or title to property purchased, விற்கிரயச்சீட்டு. 4. Absence, non-existence, இல்லாமை. 5. Death, சாவு. அறுதியாய்ப்போயிற்று. It is settled, completed, ended. அறுதியிட்டுச்சொன்னான். He spoke decisively. நமக்குக்கிடைத்தது நமக்கறுதி. Thus much is realized and we shall not have to part with it. அந்தப்பழக்கத்தையறுதியாய்விட்டுவிட்டேன். I have relinquished that custom entirely. அறுதிக்கரை, s. The proper and just division or distribution of land. அறுதிச்சாதனம்--அறுதியுறுதி, s. A deed of transfer, அறுதிச்சீட்டு. அறுதிச்சொல், s. A decisive word or sentence. அறுதிப்பங்கு, s. What is given in full of all demands, a final allotment. அறுதிப்பாடு, s. Being accomplished, finished, decided. அறுதியிட, inf. To determine, to point a day, &c. 55)

aẕi (p. 32) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To blight, blast, ruin, கெடுக்க. 2. To waste, injure, damage, பாழாக்க. 3. To abolish, consume, annihilate, destroy. demolish, exterminate, சங்கரிக்க. 4. To efface, obliterate, குலைக்க. 5. To refute an argument. கண்டிக்க. தேடாதழிக்கிற்பாடாய்முடியும். If you spend what you have not earned, you will suffer. (ஔவை.) கருவழித்திடலுநன்றே. It would be better to destroy the foetus, (to cause abortion.) வறிதினழித்திடார். They will waste nothing in vain. (காசிகரண்டம்.) அழிகட்டு, s. A fabrication either varbal or written to deprive another of his right, a forgery, (a law term), பொ ய்ச்சீட்டு. 2. An excuse, pretence, subterfuge, வீண்போக்கு. 3. Obstacle, impediment, hinderance, தடை. 4. Means used for counteracting magic, poison, &c. மாற்று. அழிச்சாட்டியம், s. Improper treatment, an unlawful or wicked proceeding. வாங்கின கடனைக்கொடாம லழிச்சாட்டியம் பண் ணிவருகிறான். He gives much trouble by delaying to pay the debt. அழிச்சாட்டியக்காரன், s. A turbulent fellow, a bully. அழிப்பு, v. noun. Destroying, ruining, wasting, consuming in an active sense, அழிக்கை. அழிப்பாளி, s. A spendthrift, squanderer, prodigal, profligate, ஊதாரி. 8)

aẕai (p. 33) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To invite, bid, call, accost respectfully, cite, summon, வாவென்ன. 2. To invoke the deity, &c., to adjure a spirit to take temporary possession of a person, in order to utter an oracle, வேண்டியழைக்க. 3. To lead, conduct, &c., கூட்டிப்போக. 4. To introduce as into an assembly, சபைக் கழைக்க. 5. To call (a snake, evil spirit, &c.,) by incantation, enchantment, &c., மந்திரத்தாலழைக்க. 6. To evoke, charm, invite or draw into union with, எத்தியழைக்க. அருத்தனே யடியேனாதரித்தழைத்தாலதெந்தவேயெ ன்றருளாயே. Oh! divine father, if I reverently invoke three, thou wilt condescened to own me as thine. (திருவாசகம்.) அவனையழைத்துக்கொண்டுவந்தான். He called and brought him. விருந்துக்கழைக்க, inf. To invite to a meal, or an entertainment. அழைக்கை, v. noun. A call, a calling, கூவுகை. அழைப்பு, v. noun. Invitation, request, citation, summons, invocation, விளிக்கை. 12)

āṭi (p. 38) s. The month of July, கர்க் கடகமாதம். (c.) 2. (p.) The twenty-first lunar asterism, உத்திராடநாள். 3. Mirror, கண்ணாடி. ஆடிக்கரு, s. Dark clouds in July regarded as indicative of plentiful rains in the ensuing monsoons. ஆடிக்கருவழிந்தால் மழைகுறைந்துபோம். If the teeming clouds in July discharge their contents, the rains will fail in the ensuing season. ஆடிக்கழைக்க, inf. To take away or separate the newly married woman from her husband, and to put her under her parents during the month of July of their first year of marriage. This separation is indispensable to prevent conception in that month, and delivery in the coming April, which is believed to bring ruin upon the family. ஆடிப்பண்டிகை, s. The first day of July (ஆடி.) a day of feasting, mutual visits, &c., when the sun is supposed to enter on its southern course. ஆடிப்பெருக்கு, s. A festival held on the day when the Cavery over-flows in July. 8)
