iru (p. 50) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To sit, sit down, உட்கார. 2. To live, be alive, exist, உயிர்வாழ. 3. To abide, reside, dwell, sojourn or stay in an appropriate place--as men in houses--beasts in the forest--fishes in water, &c., தங்க. 4. To be, wait, remain, be present, be at hand, சமுகத்திலிருக்க. 5. To be in reserve, in store, to remain--as an overplus, மீந்திருக்க. 6. To be ready, prompt, waiting for any duty or project, to be on the point of acting, going, &c., ஆயத்தமாயிருக்க. 7. To settle in a place, become fixed, established, நிலைபெற. 8. To last, remain, continue, endure, நீடி க்க. (c.) With என்று prefixed, it expresses expectation, desire, &c.--as வருவானென்றி ருக்கிறோம். We expect him. In the past tense with the gerund of a verb it serves to express the plu-perfect tense of that verb--as வந்திருந்தான். He had come. The gerund is often used with the locative and expresses the idea of procession--as நகரத்திலிருந்துநீங்கினான். He departed from the city. Sometimes இருந்து is an expletive (அசைச்சொல்)--as எழுந்திருந்தான். He is risen. இரு இரு. Wait, wait. 2. Sit down. இருக்கச்சொல்லியும்போய்விட்டான். Although I told him to wait, he went away. இருக்கட்டும் இருக்கட்டும். Let it be (emphatically). இருக்கிறதவ்வளவுதான். That is all there is. இருந்தல்லவோபடுக்கவேண்டும். Is it not necessary to sit before lying down? a phrase used to express the necessity of caution or deliberation in any pursuit. இருந்தாற்போலே செத்துப்போனான். He died unexpectedly. இருந்திருந்துகாரியமிறுகிக்கொண்டது. The case has at length assumed a serious aspect. மீன்பிடிக்க இருக்கிறான். He is about to go afishing. அவனின்னமிருக்கிறானா? Is he still alive? Residence, abode, dwelling, வாசஸ்தலம். 4. The appropriate place of any person or thing, the place where a person or thing is established, உரியவிடம். 5. A seat, பீடம். 6. Surplus, balance in hand, remainder of cash in hand after an expenditure, கையிருப்பு. 7. Money in reserve, amount in a treasury, பொக்கசத்திருப்பு. 8. Remaining commodities, residue, மீந்திருப் பவை. 9. Stores, merchandise, wares, சரக்கிருப்பு. அவனிருந்த இருப்பிலே சம்பாதித்துக்கொண்டா ன். He acquired his wealth in one place; i. e. without running hither and thither. உன்னிடத்திலின்ன மிருப்பென்ன? How much still remains in your hand (in money or goods)? அவனிடத்திலிருப்பிருக்கிறது. He has got money in hand. இருப்பிடம், s. Habitation, place of residence, appropriate, customary or established place of a person or thing, உறைவிடம். 2. ūṉṟu (p. 72) கிறேன், ஊன்றினேன், வே ன், ஊன்ற, v. a. To plant, set, fix, place firmly, rest upon with pressure--as a pole in propelling, fixing a boat, a musket, a lever, &c., நிறுத்த. 2. To lay down premises in an argument, நியாயத்திற்குமூலத்தைஸ்தாபிக்க. 3. To grasp, hold, strike root as trees, gain a firm footing, become established in a place, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 4. v. n. To lean upon, recline, or depend on a staff, a person, &c., சார. 5. To be steadfast, firm, intent upon, உறுதியாய்நிற்க. ஊன்றக்கொடுத்ததடியென்னுச்சியையுடைக்கிறது. The staff which I gave him to lean upon, breaks my head; i. e. the good I have done him has turned out evil. கையூன்றிக்கரணம்போடவேண்டும். To tumble, the hands must be fixed on the ground; i. e. nothing can be done without money, means, &c. மழையூன்றிப்பேய்கிறது. It rains hard or incessantly. மேகங்காலூன்றிமழைபெய்தது. The clouds resting on the horizon poured down torrents. நிலத்திற்சிக்கெனவூன்றியவேர். Roots stuck firmly in the ground. ஒத்தகடப்பாட்டிற்றாளுன்றியெய்து. Exerting themselves in their proper calling. ஊன்றக்கட்ட, inf. To edify, ratify. ஊன்றிக்கேட்க, inf. To interrogate with much emphasis, press for an answer, உறுதியாய்வினாவ. 2. To hear attentively, கருத்தாய்ச்செவிகொடுக்க. ஊன்றிக்கொள்ள inf. To gain a firm footing in a place, office, &c.; to establish one's self, நிலைபெற. 2. ēkāntam (p. 77) s. A solitary place, தனி த்திருக்குமிடம். 2. Solitude, loneliness, retirement, தனிமை. 3. Concentration of the mental powers on an object, especially on the deity, entire abstraction of mind, தனித் துயோகஞ்செய்கை. Wils. p. 172. EKANTA. (p.) ஏகாந்தசேவை, s. oru (p. 83) adj. [changed from ஒன்று, which is the root.] Before vowels and sometimes before consonants, the உ often is dropped and the ஒ lengthened--as ஓரிலை, a leaf. In some connexions and with appropriate emphasis, it means sameness, singularity, peculiarity, specialness, celebrity, &c. ஒருகூடுமுடைந்தவனொன்பதுகூடுமுடைவான். . . . . He who has fabricated one bird's cage may fabricate nine. [prov.] ஒருகண்டசீராக, adv. In one uninterrupted course, monotonously, invariably, constantly. ஒருகண்டசீராகமழைபெய்கிறது. He speaks a great deal, but nothing is understood. ஒருகாலேயுறுக்கிக்கொண்டுவருகிறார். He is scolding much. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாங்கொடுக்கிறது. To give all at once. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாஞ்செய்ய. To do all at once, to finish the whole. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாம்வாங்க. To receive altogether. ஒருகாற்கண்டசீராயிருக்க. To be unchangeable. ஒருகாற்செய்தவனிருகாற்செய்வான். He who has done so once, may do it again. இன்னமொருகால். Again, once more. மாற்றானுமொருகாலிதஞ்சொல்லுகிறான். Even one's foe may sometimes speak to one's advantage. ஒருகிடை, v. noun. Being bedridden; confinement by sickness or grief to a recumbent posture, கிடந்தகிடை. ஒருகிடையாகக்கிடத்தல். Lying still, unable or unwilling to rise. ஒருகுடி, s. The relations of one family. ஒருகுடித்தமர், s. Persons of the same family, near relatives--commonly on the paternal side, தாயத்தார். ஒருகூட்டு, s. Partiality in giving judgment, statements, descriptions, &c., leaning to one side or party, an ex-party statement. ஒருதலைவழக்குநூலினுஞ்செம்மை. The statement made by only one party in a suit is straighter than a line; i. e. one tale is good till another is told. ஒருதன்மை, s. Being of one and the same kind, ஒருவிதம். 2. In some degree, to some extent, ஒருவிதம். ஒருபடிசெய்துமுடித்தார்கள். They have done it, finished it, &c. with great labor. 2. Unfitness, unsuitableness, inadequacy, impropriety, inability, unworthiness, incompetency, inexpediency, incongruity, தகு தியின்மை. தகுந்தகாதென்றறிய, inf. To know whether a thing is proper or not. தகுமானபுள்ளி--தகுமானமனிதன், s. A worthy, responsible, competent man; a man of substance or wealth. (c.) தகுந்த அவுழ்தம், s. Proper remedy. தகுந்தசெலவு, v. noun. Proper expenditure. தகுந்தபிராயம், s. Proper age. தகுமானஏது, s. A reasonable cause. தகுமானவேளை--தகுந்தவேளை, s. Due time, proper time. தகும, (third per. neuter.) tuñcu (p. 245) கிறேன், துஞ்சினேன், வேன், துஞ்ச, v. n. To sleep, doze, drowse, slumber, உறங்க. 2. To be drowsy, sluggish, dull, மந்தமாயிருக்க. 3. To die, spoken suspiciously, சாவ. 4. To droop as persons or vegetables, faint away, சோர. 5. To abide, stay, be settled, continue, endure, நிலையுற. பயிர்துஞ்சிப்போயிற்று. The crop is drooping. துஞ்சிநின்றான்மிஞ்சியுண்ணான். tūngku (p. 252) கிறேன், தூங்கினேன், வேன், தூங்க, v. n. To hang, to hang on, to be suspended, cling to, தொங்க. 2. To be drowsy, to slumber, to sleep, துயில. 3. To be sluggish, inactive, idle, dull, slow, heavy, மந்தமாயிருக்க. 4. To nod, hang the head from drowsiness, தலைசாய. 5. To droop, as a person, or animal, through sorrow, hunger, &c., சோர. 6. To droop, as a plant, be withered, வாட. 7. (fig.) To be fixed, as a fortress, wall, ஓர்நிலை யாய்நிற்க. 8. To tarry, delay, loiter, hang about, தாமதிக்க. 9. To be drowsy and move the body from side to side, as an elephant, அசைவாட, (c.) தூங்கினவன்கன்றுசேங்கன்று. The calf, of the sleeper is but a bull-calf (having been changed while he slept). தூங்கணி, s. A jewel formed of hanging globules of gold and precious stones, தொங்கணி. தூங்கிப்போக, inf. To droop as a person, beast, plant, &;amc., வியாபாரந்தூங்கிப்போயிற்று. Trade is low, on the decline, &c. தாழ்வாரந்தூங்கிப்போயிற்று. The verandah is too low. தூங்காமை, v. noun. (neg.) Vigilance, Watchfulness. தூங்காவிளக்கு, s. A lamp burning day and night. தூங்கிசைச்செப்பல், s. A kind of melody of the metre called வெண்பா. தூங்கிசைத்துள்ளல், s. A melody of the கலிப்பா metre. தூங்கிசையகவல், s. A melody of the ஆசிரியப்பா, metre. தூங்கிருள்நடுநாள், s. Midnight, thick or abiding darkness. தூங்கிவிழ, inf. To nod through drowsiness. (c.) தூங்குபாலம், s. A floating bridge; sometimes தூக்குபாலம். தூங்குமஞ்சம், s. A hanging cot or bed. தூங்குமூஞ்சி, appel. n. A stupid, sleepy fellow. (c.) தூங்கல், v. noun. Dancing, கூத்து, 2. Drowsiness, &c.; used in all the meanings of the verb.

nir (p. 277) A Sanscrit prefix implying negation, privation, இன்மை, as நிர்நாமன், the nameless; also fulness, நிறைவு, as நிர்நாசம், entire destruction. The final ர், often takes the particle உ, as நிரு; sometimes changes to ஷ், as நிஷ்களங்கம், being spotless; to ச், as நிச்சிந்தை, a quiet mind, and to ன், as நின் மலம். See துர். நிரங்குசம், s. Uncontrolled, self-willed, கட்டுப்படாமை; [ex அங்குசம், goad.] நிரங்குசன், s. The Deity, the uncontrolled, கடவுள். நிரஞ்சனம், s. Void of passions, or emotion, மாசின்மை. நிரஞ்சனன், s. The Deity, கடவுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். நிரஞ்சனி, s. Parvati, Lukshmi, &c. நிரட்சம், s. Terrestrial equator. நிரட்சரம்--நிரக்ஷரம், s. That which is without letters, எழுத்தின்மை. நிரட்சரகுக்ஷி, s. A blockhead, one that does not know letters, மூடன்; [ex குக்ஷி. belly.] நிரதிகாரம், s. Being without authority. நிரதிகாரன், s. One not competent, not duly authorized to execute authority. 2. [in the agamas.] One unworthy, ineligible, unauthorized to perform sacred rites, அநதிகாரி. நிரந்தரம், s. Continuity, uninterruptedness, இடமின்மை. 2. (சது.) Closeness, nearness, நெருக்கம். 3. Perpetuity, எப் பொழுதும். 4. A monkey, குரங்கு. நிரந்தரன், s. The Supreme Being the incomprehensible, கடவுள். நிரபராதம், s. Faultlessness, blamelessness, குற்றமின்மை. நிரபராதி, s. An innocent person. நிரபேட்சம்--நிரபேட்சை--நிரபே��வுள். நிருநாமன், s. The Deity--as நிருணா மன். நிருபாதி, s. Freedom or liberation from passions, or from pain, suffering, &c., உபாதியின்மை; [ex உபாதி, pain.] நிருபாதிகம், s. That which is freed, as the mind of the ascetic from secularities, &c., நிர்விகற்பம். நிருபாதானம், s. Being without an immediate, proximate cause, துணைக்காரண மின்மை; [ex உபாதானம்.] நிருமதம், s. An elephant grown quiet by age, free venereal fury, மதமில்லா யானை. நிருமலம்--நிர்மலம்--நின்மலம். s. Immaculateness, freedom from impurity, மாசின்மை. நிருமலன், s. The Supreme Being, கட வுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். 3. Argha, அருகன். 4. Vishnu, விஷ்ணு. நிருமூடம்--நிர்மூடம், s. Stupidity, blockishness, அறிவின்மைமிகுதி; also நின் மூடம்; [ex நிர், fulness.] நிருமூடன், s. A stupid man, a fool a ninny. நிருமூலம்--நிர்மூலம், s. That which is baseless, or without root, மூலமின்மை. 2. Extirpation, utter destruction, total extinction, பாழாதல்; also நின்மூலம். நிருமூலப்பட--நிருமூலமாக, inf. To be utterly destroyed. நிருமூலமாக்க--நிரூமூலம்பண்ண, inf. To destroy totally. நிருவாசம், s. That which is uninhabited, without occupant, குடியின்மை. நிருவிகற்பம்--நிர்விகற்பம், s. Freedom from passions, emotions, &c., entire tranquillity of the soul by abstract devotion, விகற்பமின்மை. நிருவிகற்பக்காட்சி, s. [in the Agama log.] Indefinite or indistinct knowledge, perception, &c. See காட்சி. நிருவிகற்பசமாதி--நிருவிகற்பச்சமாதி, s. The state of the ascetic, void of all affection, passion, &c., ஒர்யோகநிலை. நிருவிகாரம்--நிர்விகாரம், s. Unchangeableness, as in the Deity, who, in performing his operations is unaffected by them and in the actions of creatures has no participation or contamination, விகாரமின்மை. 2. Freedom from passions, &c., as நிர்க்குணம். நிருவிகாரி--நிர்விகாரி, s. One free from change as the Deity, or as the soul approximating to the Deity, கடவுள். நிருவிக்கினம்--நிர்விக்கினம், s. Freedom from obstruction, impediment, இடையூறி ன்மை. நிருவிசாரம்--நிர்விசாரம், s. Carelessness, recklessness, வேண்டாமை. 2. Tranquillity, freedom from, கவலையின்மை. நிருவிடம்--நிருவிஷம்--நிர்விஷம். s. A plant, Curcuma Zedoaria from which a poisonous drug is extracted, used as an antidote to snake bites, ஓர்பூண்டு. 2. (fig.) [ex நிர், fulness.] A very wicked person, துன்மார்க்கன். நிர்க்குணம், s. [vul. நிர்க்குணம்] Being without attributes, குணமின்மை. நிர்க்குணன், s. The Deity. See குணம். நிர்த்தாட்சிணியம், s. An unfavorable look, unkindness, unmindfulness, கண் ணோட்டமின்மை. நிர்த்தூளி, s. Utter demolition, entire destruction, சருவநாசம். நிர்தூளிபண்ண--நிர்த்தூளியாக்க, inf. To destroy utterly. நிர்த்தூளியாக, inf. To be reduced to dust, destroyed. நிர்நாசம், s. Imperishableness. See நிருநாசம். நிர்நிமித்தம்--நிர்நிமித்தியம், s. Without and cause, முகாந்தரமின்மை. நிர்ப்பத்தியம்--நிஷ்பத்தியம், s. Being without restraint in diet, &c., as a patient, பத்தியமின்மை. நிர்ப்பந்தம், s. [vul. நிற்பந்தம்] Misery, calamity, wretchedness, affliction.-Note. This word varies in Tamil from the Sanscrit. நிர்ப்பந்தமாயிருக்கிறவன். A woman in travail. (R.) நிர்ப்பாக்கியம், s. [vul. நிற்பாக்கியம்.] Unluckiness, misfortune. நிர்ப்பாக்கியன், s. An unhappy man. நிர்ப்பீசதீட்சை, s. Instruction of a disciple complete in itself. See தீட்சை. நிர்மலம்--நின்மலம், s. See நிருமலம். 140)

ptm (p. 293) s. A proper temperament, temperature, consistency, degree of hardness or softness, quality or fitness, பக்குவம். (c.) 2. Boiled rice, சோறு. 3. Eating, உண்ணுகை. 4. A sacrificial grass, அறுகு. 5. Beauty, அழ கு. 6. Time, காலம். 7. An Indian hour of twenty-four minutes, நாழிகை. 8. (Beschi.) a kind of ode, சிந்து. மருந்தெண்ணைப்பதம், s. The stage when a medicinal oil is to be taken from the fire. 2. (fig.) Such a delicate state of the system as renders a person liable to disease from the least exposure. 3. (fig.) Excessive irritability of temper, extreme of sensibility.--Note. There are five degrees of inspissation: 1. குழம்புப்பதம், a thickened state; 2. கடுகுப்பதம், partial fluidity; 3. மந்தபதம், oily consistency; 4. மெழுகுபதம், waxy state; 5. முறுகுபதம், dryness. There are two states of heat in preparing oils, metals, &.c.: காயும்பதம், slight heat, for boiling the juices of plants; 2. வேல்பதம், full heat for melting gold, silver and other metals. பதக்கேடு, v. noun. Past the right stage, over-ripe, over-boiled, decayed, rotten. பதக்கேடானசரீரம். Debility of the system, often through age. பதத்துக்குக்காய்ச்ச--பதமாகக்காய்ச்ச, inf. To heat or boil medical oil, food, &c., to the proper degree. பதத்துக்குவடிக்க--பதத்தில்வடிக்க, inf. To strain a medical oil, &c., at the right stage of boiling. பதநீர், s. [com. பதனி.] Sweet toddy drawn in a pot lined with chunam To prevent fermentation. பதந்தப்ப, inf. To miss or pass the proper stage of boiling rice or medical oil, or in the ripening of fruits. 2. To pass the proper time for doing a thing. எகுபதந்தப்பிப்போயிற்று. The steel is not well tempered. பதபாகம், s. Gentleness, mildness, &c. பதப்பட, inf. [v. noun. பதப்பாடு.] To be seasoned, tempered, fitted, adapted, trained, பக்குவமாக. 2. To grow ripe, பழுக்க. பல்லுக்குப்பதப்பட்டது. It is adapted to the teeth--as well boiled for an old man, &c. பதப்படுத்த, inf. To season, temper, tan, mould, adapt, train. பதமழிவு, v. noun. Over-ripeness. See பதனழிவு. பதமறிய, inf. To know the right stage, temperature or consistency. பதமாயிருக்க, inf. To strain the water from boiled rice that it may be properly dry. பதமெடுக்க--பதம்பிடிக்க, inf. To hit on the right stage, as in boiling rice, oil, &c. பதம்பண்ண, inf. To season, to temper, to mould; to tan. பதம்பாட, inf. To compose a பதம் ode. பதம்பார்க்க, inf. To try the taste, consistency, &c., of boiling rice, to try a fruit, by feeling, smelling, or cutting. &c. 2. To hesitate and not enter on a business promptly. 2.
