akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. AGNI. அக்கினிகணம், s. The same as தீக்கணம், an inauspicious measure. See கணம். (p.) அக்கினிகர்ப்பம், s. A spark. 2. A crystal with fabulous qualities. 3. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. When the 9th or 11th occurs on Saturday. 6. When the 12th occurs on Sunday. 18) *

atiru (p. 11) --அதிர், கிறேன், அதிர்ந் தேன், வேன், அதிர, v. n. To shake, quake, as by an earthquake, he fall of a tree, or the rolling of chariots, கம்பிக்க. 2. To be startled, alarmed as by the sound of a cannon, the report of thieves, the prevalence of an epidemic, &c., thrill, நடுங்க. 3. To resound attended with a shock, as by thunder, by an earthquake; to sound as a drum, &c., reverberate, vibrate, roar as beasts, tinckle as bells or ornaments, ஆர வாரிக்க. பூமியதிரநடவாதபுண்ணியவான். A good man, one who is careful not to give offence. அதிர்குரல்முரசம். The loud sounding drum. பூமியதிரல், v. noun. An earthquake, trembling of the earth. அதிர், v. noun. Commotion, shaking, trembling, fear, நடுக்கம், 2. s. Sound, ஒலி. அதிர்வெடி--அதிர்வேட்டு, s. The explosion or report of small cannons, &c., to excite alarm. 2. (prov.) The cannon itself. அதிர்ச்சி, v. noun. Quaking, shaking, trembling as of the earth by an earthquake, thunder, or the fall of a tree &c., அசைவு. 2. Resonance, repercussion, concussion, reverberation, எதிரொலி. 3. Agitation, stir, நடுக்கம். 4. A great noise, a loud report, an explosion, பேரொலி. அதிர்ப்பு, v. noun. A shock, concussion, &c., attended with noise, தாக்கி யொலிக்கை. 2. Clamor, shouting, vociferation, ஆரவாரம், 3. Tremor, trembling, நடுக்கம். 4. Fear, alarm, அச்சம். 28) *

āyuruvētam (p. 40) --ஆயுள்வேதம், s. One of the four உபவேதம், that which teaches medicine, உபவேதத்திலொன்று. 2. The medical art, pharmacy, வைத்தியம். Wils. p. 118. AYURVEDA. (p.) ஆயுருவேதாக்கினி, s. A kind of fire used in preparing medicines, which consists of three kinds; viz.: 1. தீபாக்கி னி, flame of a lamp. 2. கமலாக்கினி, fire glowing as the lotus flower. 3. காடாக் கினி, immoderate fire. Ground grain, flour, rice-flour, இடித்தமா. 5. Cakes, &c., as a light meal, luncheon, tiffin, சிற்று ண்டி. 6. Pulvil, powder, dust, any thing pulverized, &c., சுண்ணம். 7. Hair-ointment, probably made of powder, மயிர்ச்சா ந்து. 8. Asseveration, affirmation, உறுதிச் சொல். 9. A throb, palpitation, துடிப்பு. 1. The standard of Indra, இந்திரன்கொடி. இடிபுரிந்தெள்ளுஞ்சொற்கேட்பர் மடிபுரிந்துமாண்ட வுஞற்றிலவர். They who are too idle to engage in any enterprize, will hear the words of rebuke which are applied to them. இடியுந்துய்த்து. Eating also millet-meal. (கல்லா.) இடிகொம்பு--இடியம்பு, s. Small mortars fastened upon a pole, which are loaded with powder and discharged at festivals, funerals, &c. இடிக்கொடி, s. The flag of Indra, இந்திரன்கொடி. இடிக்கொடியோன், s. Indra, இந் திரன். இடிபட--இடியுண்ண, inf. To be pushed about, elbowed, shouldered, battered, demolished, &c.--as a wall, bank, &c. 2. To be pounded--as rice, &c. இடிமுழக்கம், s. Thunder. இடியப்பம், s. A kind of paste or cake cooked in steam, சிற்றுண்டிவகை யிலொன்று. இடியப்பத்தட்டு, s. Flat circles or squares of braided rattan, &c., used for making the இடியப்பம். இடியப்பவுரல், s. The mould or cullender through which the paste is pressed to form the cake. இடியப்பவுரற்கண், s. The holes of the இடியப்பம் mould. இடிவிழ, inf. To strike as lightning, to fall as a thunder-bolt. 2. Heritage, inheritance, hereditary and unalienable rights, சுதந்திரம். 3. Relationship, the ties of consanguinity, இனம். 4. Natural or correlative duty, obligation, கடமை. 5. Love, affection, intimacy, tender regard, friendship, சிநேகம். 6. Liberality, privilege of familiarity, freedom taken or permitted on the ground of relationship, friendship, acquaintance, &c., இஷ்டம். 7. Claim, right, உரித்து. 8. (p.) A wife, மனைவி. உரித்து. A symbolic verb used as a noun with meanings similar to those of உரிமை, being peculiar to a person, or thing--as duty, obligation, property, quality, &c., உரியது. 2. s. Relative duty and care as of a child to his parents, the teacher to his pupils, the Guru to his disciples, the husband to his wife, and vice versa, கடமை. 3. Affection, பட்சம் உரித்தாக்கிக்கொள்ள, inf. To appropriate to one's self, procure a right in, to make one's own, உரிமையாகச்செய்ய. 2. To secure the friendship of one, நட்பாக்கிக்கொள்ள. உரித்தாளி--உரித்தானவன், s. Proprietor, owner, heir, சுதந்திரன். 2. One near of kin, இனமானவன். சபைக்குரித்தானவன். A person entitled to a place in an assembly. என்னுடைமைக்குரித்தானவன். The heir of my property. உரிமைக்கஞ்சி--உரிமைச்சோறு, s. Food prepared for the relations of a deceased person on the day of his death. 2. [prov.] Rice-water poured into the mouth of a dying person as the last token of respect. உரிமைக்கடன், s. The duties and obligations of near relations to perform funeral rites, and to show respect to a deceased person, பிரேதத்திற்குரியவர்கள் செய்யுங்கடமை. 2. The duty of a child to support his father in sickness or other extremity, &c., புத்திரன்பிதாவுக்குச்செய்யுங் கடமை. 3. Obligations of the heir to pay the debts of a deceased person, அவன வன்செய்யவேண்டியகடமை. உரிமைக்கட்டு, s. Consanguinity allowing a marriage connexion, இனக் கட்டுப்பாடு. 2. To own the obligations one is under to another, on the ground of consanguinity, friendship, religion, country, &c., and to act accordingly, சுதந்திரங் கொண்டாட. 2. To converse with another on the ties of friendship, consanguinity, &c., common between them either to show that such ties exist, or for social enjoyments, சம்பந்தங்கொண்டாட. உரிமைபேச, inf. To urge one's rights, claims, &c. on the ground of consanguinity, usage, occupation, previous services, acquaintance or otherwise, சுதந்திரங்காட்டிப்பேச. உரிமைப்பங்கு, s. Share of an inheritance, சுதந்திரப்பங்கு. உரிமைப்பாடு, s. Relative authority, obligation, &c., உரியகடமை. உரிமைப்பிள்ளை, s. An adopted child entitled to the property of the adopter, சுவிகாரபுத்திரன். உரிமைப்பெண், s. A female in the proper degree of consanguinity to be taken in marriage, விவாகஞ்செய்வதற் குரித்தானவள். உரிமைமண், s. [prov.] Earth thrown on a corpse at its burial, by the near relatives, பிரேதக்குழியிலுரியவர்கள்போ டுமண். உரிமையாட்சி, s. Possession or right of possession of property devolving on a child, which, had the parents been living, would have belonged to them, சுதந்திரவாட்சி. உரிமையின்மை, s. Want of right or privilege. உரிமையெடுக்க, inf. To take possession, to enjoy or claim one's share of an inheritance, produce, &c. உரிமைவழி, s. Consanguinity, lineage, ancestral connection, சம்பந்தமுறை. 2. Inheritance or right of possession from ancestors, தொன்றுதொட்டுவருஞ்சுதந்தி ரம். உரிமைவிட, inf. To give freedom to, to manumit a slave. சொல்லுரிமை, s. A fine emphatic expression. உரியது, s. That which is proper to, peculiar to, tending to, liable to, exposed to, deserved, deserving, worthy of, appropriate to, obnoxious to, உரித்தா னது. இததற்குரியசொல். This is the appropriate word for it. உரியதண்டனை, s. Condign punishment, deserved chastisement. உரியபொருள், s. The primary meaning of a passage, உரியவர்த்தம். 2. Property in which one has a peculiar right, சுதந்திரமானதிரவியம். உரியர்--உரியார்--உரியோர், s. Proprietors, உடையவர்கள். 2. Heirs, சுதந்திரர். 3. Near or responsible relations, சம்பந்த முடையார். 4. The learned, அறிஞர். அன்பிலாரெல்லாந்தமக்குரியர்அன்புடையர்என்பு முரியர்பிறர்க்கு. Those destitute of love live only to themselves, whereas they who possess it are ready to give up their lives (lit. bones) for others. (குறள்.) உரியவன்--உரியன்--உரியோன், s. Proprietor, owner, உடையவன். 2. Heir, சுதந்திரன். 3. A near relation, இனத் தான். 4. One worthy of, deserving of, தக்கவன். 5. (p.) Husband, கணவன். கொலைக்குரியவன், s. One who is worthy of death. இழவுக்குரியவன், s. One whose duty it is to perform funeral rites. எனக்குரியவன், s. One near to me by the ties of consanguinity, friendship, relation, caste, country, &c. உரியள்--உரியாள், s. A wife, மனையாள். (p.) 17)

To burn--as the body from exposure to the sun --the mouth, or a sore from any thing pungent--the back after flogging, &c., எரிய. 3. It is very salt. சொன்னதொன்றுங்காதிலேயுறைக்கவில்லையா.... Has nothing that I said affected you? lit. your ears. என்மனதிலேயுறைக்கிறது. It touches me to the quick. நான்சொன்னதுஅவன்மனதிலேயுறைத்தது. What I said made an impression on his mind. புளியுறைக்கிறது. It is very sour. கறியுறைக்கிறது. The curry is hot. வெயிலுறைக்கிறது. The sun scorches intensely. சாறுறைக்கிறது. The broth is pungent. உறைக்கஅடிக்க, inf. To strike so as to produce feeling. உறைக்கச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak effectively. உறைக்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To look intently. உறைத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To become strengthened in mind. வாயுறைக்க, inf. To burn as the mouth through eating hot spices. உறைப்பு, v. noun. Sharpness, pungency, acrimony, காரம். 2. Severity, tartness, harshness in language, &c., கொடுமை. 3. Smarting, &c. of the mouth from eating pungent spices, எரிவு. 4. Painful sensations of body or mind, தாக்குகை. 5. Intensity, acuteness, severity, உக்கிரம். 6. Impressiveness, positiveness, பதிவு. உறைப்பானபேச்சு, s. Pointed language, cutting reproof, a biting sarcasm, a caustic remark. 2. Impressive speech. உறைப்பானமழை, s. An efficacious or fertilizing rain. உறைப்புக்காட்ட, inf. To be pungent. 2. To add pungent ingredients to curries, &c. 3. To be impressive, poignant, &c.--as a discourse. 13)

uḷi (p. 67) s. A chisel, மரவினையாளர்கரு வியினொன்று. 2. [prov.] A barber's instrument for paring nails, நகஞ்சீவி. 3. A place, இடம். 4. A form of the seventh case, ஏழனுருபு. 5. A burin, or graver, an instrument for engraving, சித்திரிக்குங்கருவி. உலக்கைதேய்ந்துளிப்பிடியாயிற்று. The pestle is worn down as small as the handle of a chisel--spoken of a person emaciated by disease. உளிக்குத்தாக்குத்த, inf. To buffet, to box, to strike with the fist. சிற்றுளி, s. A small chisel used by carpenters. 39)

eẕutu (p. 75) கிறேன், எழுதினேன், வேன், எழுத, v. a. To write, paint, draw, mark, stain, trace (letters, &c.), inscribe, வரைய. 2. To foreordain, to predestine. This verb is soused from the notion that each one's fate is written by Brahma in the skull, தலையிலெழுத. 3. To write composition, draw up in writing, வசனாதிகளெழுத. 4. To engrave, சித்திரமெழுத. எழுதக்கைதிரும்பவில்லை. The hand is not yet trained. எட்கிடைநெற்கிடைவிட்டெழுத. To write leaving the space of a sesamum seed between the letters, and of a grain of rice between the lines--the order to be observed in writing. எழுதாக்கிளவி--எழுதாமறை, s. The vedas, lit. unwritten works--an appellation adopted with reference to their meaning being handed down by oral explanation and not written, or to the accent, pronunciation, &c., which cannot be written, வேதம். எழுதிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To grant by writing, write and deliver as a voucher. 2. To betroth a girl by written contract. 3. To write for another, draw up a document. 4. To write lessons for a learner. 5. To give a list, inventory, &c. எழுதிக்கொள்ள, inf. To write a letter, petition, &c., to a great person; to write for one's self. 2. To enrol. 3. To write and deliver vouchers reciprocally. எழுதிச்சேர்க்க, inf. To register, file a writing as a notary public. எழுதிவைக்க, inf. To recount,register, write and keep for a memorandum, &c., to write and leave behind for the use of others. எழுதினஉடன்படிக்கை--எழுதின வொப்பாசாரம், s. Written contract. எழுதுகோல், s. A writing reed, எழுதுங்கோல். 2. A painter's brush or pencil, தூரியக்கோல். எழுதுபடம், s. A picture, கிழி. மேற்பாடம்பார்த்தெழுதுதல், v. noun. Copying from a written book. பெயர்த்தெழுத, inf. To copy, to transcribe. குறிப்பெழுத, inf. To note down the time, &c. of the birth of a child. திருத்தமாயெழுத, inf. To write correctly. சரமகவியெழுத, inf. [prov.] To write a stanza, commemorative of the death of an ancestor, or other near relative, mentioning the day, hour, &c. of the moon, as a memorandum for ascertaining the time to perform the annual funeral rites. மறுமொழியெழுத--பதிலெழுத, inf. To write an answer. பருக்கவெழுத, inf. To write in large characters. கைபடியவெழுத, inf. To practise writing, train the hand in writing. 14)

A bunch of corn ears to adorn a house, &c., கதிர்க்கற்றை. கதிர்க்குடலை, s. Corn with the ear shot out and shooting out. கதிர்செய்ய, inf. To emit rays-as the sun, கிரணம்வீச. கதிர்த்தாக்கம், v. noun. Bending with the weight of ears--said of corn. கதிர்நாள்--செங்கதிர்நாள், s. The twelfth lunar asterism, உத்திரநாள். (p.) கதிர்புறப்படுதல், v. noun. Putting forth-as ears of corn. கதிர்ப்பகை, s. The arista, the awn of a corn, &c. கதிர்விட, inf. To cast a phosphoric light, coruscate--as animalcul&ae; in sea-water. தொண்டைக்கதிர், s.
