amṭṭu (p. 19) கிறேன், அமட்டினேன், வேன், அமட்ட, v. a. To reprimand, upbraid, அதட்ட. 2. To inveigle, entrap, ensnare, சிக்குப்படுத்த. 3. To hector, bully, overpower by sophistry, உறுக்க. 4. To move tiles, &c., புரட்ட. 5. To overcome one, as sleep, மேற்கொள்ள. 6. v. n. To wabble, turn aside, be unsteady as a bench with uneven legs, புரள. என்னைத்தூக்கமமட்டுகிறது. Sleep overcomes me. அமட்டு--அமட்டுகை, v. noun. Threatening, threat, menace. 8)

arcu (p. 23) --அரசமரம், s. A tree-the Ficus religiosa, Peepul, or poplarleaved fig-tree--forming one of the nine kinds of wood used in burnt offerings, ஓர்மரம். (See சமித்து.) Its seed is used for medicinal purposes. அரசாணிக்கால், s. A bough of this tree, which together with others from the கலியாணமுருக்கு, (or erythrina,) &c. is fixed between two of the interior posts of the marriage pandal, round which the parties pass, performing particular ceremonies. அரசிலை, s. The leaves of the அரசு. 2. The figure of a leaf as branded on beasts, &c., அரசிலைக்குறி. அரசிலைத்தூக்கம்--அரசிலைத்தொங் கல், s. Hangings, resembling the அரசு leaves. கொடியரசு, s. A different species of Ficus. பூவரசு, s. The portia tree, பூப் பரத்தி, Thespesia populnea, L. ஆற்றரசு, s. Another species of Ficus growing in the vicinity of rivers. 2)

aṟai (p. 33) s. The sound of a letter, எழுத்தினோசை. 2. A word or sentence as uttered (not as written), சொல். 3. A rock, பாறை. 4. Peak of a mountain, மலையுச்சி. (p.) 5. A room, a chamber, cell, a separate apartment of a house, அறைவீடு. 6. (c.) Drawer of a box or otherwise, பெட்டிய றை. 7. (p.) The apartment in a chessboard, அரங்கு. 8. The cells in a bee-hive, தேன்கூட்டினறை. 9. Hanging ornaments, தூக்கங்கள். 1. A curtain, திரைச்சீலை. 11. An excavation, cavern, முழைஞ்சு. அறைகுறை, s. Wants, necessities, troubles. அறைகுறைபார்க்க, inf. ākku (p. 36) கிறேன், ஆக்கினேன், வேன், ஆக்க, v. a. To cause to be, create, effect, make, உண்டாக்க. 2. To cook, to mature. to accomplish, சமைக்க. 3. To raise one from obscurity, want, distress, danger, கைதூக்கிவிட. It is frequently joined with nouns to form compound verbs, as குண மாக்குதல், &c.; [ex ஆ, v.] ஆக்கல்--ஆக்குகை--ஆக்குதல், v. noun. Making, creating, &c., உண்டாக் குகை. 15) *

āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

āṉi (p. 44) s. June--the month, ஓர்மாதம். 2. (p.) The eighteenth Nakshattra, கேட்டை. 3. The nineteenth lunar mansion, மூலம். 4. The twenty-first lunar mansion, உத்திராடம். 5. The name of a river in the Madura district, which overflows in the month of June, பொருந்தநதி. 6. (திவா.) A tender leaf of the palm, cut off, வெட்டுக்குருத்து. ஆனித்திருமஞ்சனம், s. A sacred bathing or anointing of the idol at Chillumbrum. celebrated in the eighth lunar mansion in the month of June. ஆனித்தூக்கம், s. [prov.] Calms in the month of June. 15) *

ukkm (p. 59) s. (Tel. உ்மு.) A rope by which any thing is suspended or carried in the hand, தூக்குக்கயிறு. 13)

uṇ (p. 59) --உண்ணு, கிறேன், உண்டே ன், உண்பேன் or உண்ணுவேன், உண்ண, v. a. To eat, drink, suck--as a child; to take food, whether solids, liquids or other kinds, to taste, அருந்த. 2. To feed, make a full meal --as a dinner, &c., புசிக்க. 3. To enjoy, suffer, experience, or receive the fruits of actions performed in former births, or in future the actions of the present, அனுபவிக்க. 4. To imbibe, absorb, விழுங்க.--Note. With verbal roots and sometimes with verbal nouns it forms a passive--as அடியுண்ண, to be beaten; அலையுண்ண, to be distressed. உண்டசுற்றமுருகும். Relations or friends who have eaten together will cherish towards each other kindly feelings. உண்டசோற்றுக்கிரண்டகம்பண்ணப்படாது. One ought not to be ungrateful to his benefactor. உண்டார்மேனிகண்டாற்றெரியும். A person's diet may be known by his appearance. உண்ணக்கைசலிக்க. To be so delicate as to tire by eating--as a dainty child, &c. 2. To be wearied, cloyed, sated, &c. by too profuse a supply of food. உய்யாவினைப்பயனுண்ணுங்காலை. While experiencing the inevitable fruits of former births. உண்கலம், s. A plate or dish to cat from, a porringer, commonly brass, தாலம். உண்டாட்டு, s. Play of females, மகளிர்விளையாட்டு. 2. Play, sport, விளையாட்டு. 3. Festivity, drinking, joviality, மதுவுண் டாடுகை. உண்ணி, s. An appellative termination often contracted to உணி--as தூக்குணி, &c., one who eats, an eater. உண்ணீர், s. Water to drink. உண்பிக்க, inf. To cause to eat, drink, &c., feed one, உண்ணுவிக்க. தூக்குணி, s. One so vile and daring as not to fear hanging. 2. A malefactor who is hanged. 3. One who hangs about to get food. அழுகுணி, s. One who is always weeping; also one who is disposed to weep. அடியுணி--குட்டுணி, s. One who is beaten. குத்துணி, s. One who is stabbed. 2. A dastard, mean spirited person. இரப்புணி, s. A beggar, one who eats what he begs. அடையுணி, s. One dependent for food. கட்டுண்ண, inf. To be tied up. வெட்டுண்ண, inf. To be cut down. தடையுண்ண, inf. To be hindered. மையுண்கண்ணி, s. A woman with painted eyes, (lit.) she whose eyes have absorbed paint. முலையுண்ணுங்குழந்தை, s. An infant at the breast. நீலுண்டுகிலிலை. The pencil which has imbibed blue paint. (நன்னூலுரை.) கள்ளுண்ணி, s. A drunkard. தள்ளுண்ண, inf. To be rejected. வீண்சோறுண்ணி, s. A rice consumer, a worthless person. உண்டல். A past verbal form of உண்ணல், eating. 119)

utti (p. 60) s. Union, agreement, connection, இசைவு. Wils. p. 685. YUKTI. 2. The art which a scientific or literary author employs in treating his subject-such as the general plan, divisions, subdivisions, mode of discussion, examples, quoting authorities, showing how the sentiments of others agree with, or differ from his own, &c. In the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், thirty-two particulars are given as proper to be kept in view by such writers, தந்திரவு த்தி. Knowledge, அறிவு. 4. A gold ornament, intended as an image of Lukshmi, worn by women, திருவுறுப்பு. 5. Yellow or tawny spots on the skin, chiefly of women, considered as a beauty, தேமல். 6. Spots on the neck of the cobra, or hooded snake, பாம்பின்படப்பொறி. 7. Words, language, discourse, பேச்சு. 8. Wealth, செல்வம். 9. Pendants, hangings--as swing, &c., தூக்கங்கள். 1. Opium, அபின். (p.)

uṟi (p. 67) s. A bow or hoop, in which to place a pot suspended by a string from the roof of the house, from the hand, or at the end of a pole carried on the shoulder, தூக்கு. உருசைகண்டபூனையுறியையுறியைத்தாவுகிறது. The cat which has tasted nice things will continually jump on the shelf; i. e. stolen goods are sweet. உறிக்கலயம்--உறிச்சட்டி, s. Different kinds of kitchen utensils suspended in the hoop. உறிபோட, inf. To construct such a net work of rope or ratan. உறியடி--உறியித்திருநாள், s. The pot breaking--a ceremony performed at the close of a festival among the worshippers of Vishnu in honor of Krishna who is reputed to have stolen butter, ghee, &c., from suspended pots, ஓர்திருவிழா. உறியடிக்க, inf. To perform the ceremony of breaking pots. உறியடுக்குச்சட்டி, s. A number of kitchen utensils hung up. உறியிற்சமணர், s. Ascetics of the Jaina sect who sit in swings that they may not destroy insect life, சமண்முனி வரிலோர்பாலார். 75)

ūkku (p. 69) கிறேன், ஊக்கினேன், வே ன், ஊக்க, v. a. To commence with spirit, முயல. 2. To execute with energy, முயன்று செய்ய. 3. To excite to action, rouse, to direct, எழுப்ப. 4. v. n. To ascend, ஏற. (p.) நுனிக்கொம்பரேறினாரஃதிறந்தூக்கினுயிர்க்கிறுதியாகி விடும். If one who has already ascended to the extremity of a bough, goes beyond, his life will be at an end. (குறள்.) அறவினையையூக்கி. Entering with energy on the practice of virtue. (நாலடி.) உடைத்தம்வலியறியாரூக்கத்தினூக்கி. With spirit commencing (war), ignorant of their own strength-- (குறள்.) நல்லாற்றினூக்கின். If one turn (them) into the right way-- (நீதிநெறி.) 31)

eṭu (p. 73) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To take up, lift up, raise, தூக்க. 2. To take off, take away, extract, take out, remove a stain, dirt, humor, &c., or one body from another, chemically, or otherwise combined, ஒன்றிலிருந்தெடுக்க. 3. To undertake, take in hand, enter upon, தொடங்க. 4. To adopt--as a sentiment, &c., receive, take--as one's own, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. To take a subject, to discourse, write, think on, look out, find a place in a book, &c., ஆராய்ந்தெடுக்க. 6. To adduce (an argument), ஒன்றையெடுத்துப்பேச. 7. To strike (a sound), pitch the key-note, to try the lightness of a bow-string by striking it, இசையெடுக்க. 8. To select, choose, (as a spot, for a house, a well, &c.), தெரிந்துகொ ள்ள. 9. To buy, purchase (chiefly applicable to cloth), வாங்க. 1. To bear, carry, sustain, சுமக்க. 11. To weigh in a balance, நிறுக்க. 12. v. n. [in combination.] To rise, extend itself, become spread, or liffused, to be attacked with pain, &c., மயக்கமெடுக்க. 13. To swell, heave, rise in billows, எழும்ப. 14. To keck, puke, vomit, வாந்தியெடுக்க. எடுக்கத்தொடுக்கவிடான். He will not let me begin; spoken figuratively in allusion to the discharge of arrows. எடுப்பாரும் பிடிப்பாருமுண்டானாலிளைப்புந்தவிப்பும் மெத்தத்தோன்றும். Where there are many attendants much trouble is experienced. பிள்ளைக்குமூக்கெடுக்க. To raise or force out the upper part of the nose of an infant--as a nurse by pressing with two fingers. அரசனாலயமெடுத்தான். The king has built a temple. இந்தப்பாரமெடுக்கமாட்டேன். I am unable to carry this load. அதையெடுத்துப்பேசினான். He took up the subject. யானைதும்பிக்கையினாலேபணத்தையெடுக்கும். The elephant will take up a small coin with his proboscis. ஏரியெடுத்துப்போகிறது. The water of the lake has carried away its embankment. இதினாலிலாகிரியெடுக்கும். This will cause intoxication. சோற்றிலிருக்கிறகல்லையெடுக்கமாட்டாதவன்மோக னக்கல்லைத்தாங்குவானா. Will he who cannot pick out a stone from rice be able to lift the stone architrave of a temple vestibule? i. e. he who is incapable of little matters must be incapable of great ones. விழுந்தவனையெடாமலுதைக்கலாமா. Is it proper to kick, instead of raising, a fallen man? இந்தச்சீலையையெந்தக்கடையிலெடுத்தாய். In what bazaar did you buy this cloth? புல்லெடுக்கிறதரை. Ground covered with an exuberant growth of grass. எடாதஎடுப்பு, s. Living above one's rank, circumstances, means, &c., engaging in an enterprise, beyond one's powers, &c. எடாதஎடுப்பெடுக்கலாகாது. It is improper to engage in an enterprise above one's circumstances. எடுகூலி, s. Porterage, hire for carrying burdens, சுமைக்கூலி. எடுத்தடிமடக்கு, s. Retort, turning a person's reasons or remarks against himself, confuting one by his own arguments, anticipating a person in word, or action, in order to check, or thwart him in his object; interrupting one in speaking, &c. 2. Temerity, rashness; speaking, answering, or acting rashly, துணிவு. எடுத்தடிவைக்க, inf. To begin to step--as a child, காலைப்பெயர்த்துவைக்க. எடுத்தபடி, adv. Suddenly, at once, promptly, extemporaneously. எடுத்தமொழியினெய்தவைத்தல், v. noun. An author's forming rules applicable to the examples he finds-one of the உத்தி. எடுத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which, the weight of the article weighed is used for the scale. எடுத்தாட்சி, s. A thing much in use, வழக்கம். எடுத்தார்கைப்பிள்ளை, s. A docile, tractable, yielding person; one who has no opinion of his own. எடுத்துக்கட்ட, inf. To fabricate, invent. எடுத்துக்கட்டு, v. noun. Fabrication, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. Invention--as of a word. எடுத்துக்காட்டல், v. noun. An author's adducing examples, illustrations, &c. (See உத்தி.) 2. Citing, quoting, &c. எடுத்துக்காட்டு, s. An example, illustration, உதாரணம். எடுத்துக்கைநீட்ட, inf. To help one--as a waiter, or attendant. எடுத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To take to one's self, தனக்காகக்கொள்ள. 2. To accept, admit, approve, ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள. எடுத்துக்கொண்டுபோக, inf. To take, to carry away. எடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To quote, cite, பிறர்கருத்தைஎடுத்துக்கூற. 2. To give one's own opinion, தன்கருத்தையெடுத்துக்கூற. எடுத்துத்தொடுக்க, inf. To fabricate, invent, எடுத்துக்கட்ட. 2. To pick quarrels, institute a lawsuit, commonly on frivolous grounds, வழக்குப்பிணைக்க. எடுத்துப்பிடிக்க, inf. To hold up and expose little faults to view, தூக்கிக் காட்ட. 2. To encourage, strengthen, establish, திடப்படுத்த. எடுத்துப்பேச, inf. to speak as an advocate, plead for a client, பரிந்து பேச. 2. To offer arguments, treat on, நியாயம்பேச. 3. [with accus. of person.] To praise, commonly one absent, துதிக்க. எடுத்துப்போட, inf. To deprive a person of office, situation, &c., to turn out, displace, dislodge, தள்ளிப்போட. எடுத்தேற்றம், s. Random. எடுத்தேற்றமானவேலை, s. A thing done at random. எடுத்தேற்றியாயிருக்க, inf. To be unequal, uneven, discrepant in size, character, rank, &c.; to be irregular, இணக்கமின்றியிருக்க. எடுபட, inf. To be taken up, out, away, &c., நீக்கப்பட. 2. To rise, part, to be detached, displaced, dislodged, எழும்ப. 3. To be abolished, terminated, அழிந்துபோக. 4. To be led away by evil, ill-advice, நியாயந்தவற. 5. To leave one's station, place of residence, &c., to leave and be no more heard of (used in an ill sense), காணாமற்போக. 6. To be overcome in argument--as a party in controversy, &c., to be confuted, தோற்றுப்போக. அவள்பேச்சினாலயலெல்லாமெடுபடுகின்றது... The whole neighborhood is raised by her clamor. எடுபட்டவள், s. A lewd woman, குடும்பத்தைவிட்டுவெளிப்பட்டவள். எடுபட்டுப்போக, inf. To be raised --as a siege. 2. To be abolished. 3. To be defeated. அங்கிருந்தபள்ளிக்கூடம்எடுபட்டுப்போயிற்று.... The school which existed there formerly has been abolished. உன்னால்நானெடுபட்டுப்போவேனா. Am I to be defeated by you? எடுபாடு, s. Celebrity, a high style of living, notoriety in a good or bad sense, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Abolition, அழிகை. 3. Gaiety, in dress, in a woman, a lax, or lascivious disposition, மேட்டிமை. எடுப்பிக்க, inf. To cause to raise, or lift up. மனிதவதாரமெடுக்க, inf. To assume the human form, to become incarnate. வெறியெடுக்க, inf. To be intoxicated. வெறியெடுத்தவன், s. One who is intoxicated. பெயரெடுக்க, inf. To assume an appearance, a name, a character, &c.; to acquire a name, celebrity. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To disentangle thread. வாயாலெடுக்க--வாயிலெடுக்க, inf. To vomit. தொழிலெடுக்க, inf. To enter upon an occupation. 2. To suspend one from office. பூவெடுக்க, inf. To gather flowers. கிணறெடுக்க, inf. To dig a well. 2. [prov.] To select a spot for a well in reference to the situation of the house and other surrounding objects that ill luck may not result, as also to the nature of a soil or the depth at which water may be found, judged of by the produce of the land, &c. வயிறெடுக்க--வயிறுகடுப்பெடுக்க, inf. To have a looseness. தானெடுத்துமொழிதல், v. noun. [in works of science.] The adoption of rules, or language from other authors. See உத்தி. எடுப்பு, v. noun. The act of taking off, taking up, தூக்குகை. 2. Elevation, உயரம். 3. Taking in hand, undertaking attempt, engagement, தொடங்குகை. 4. Insolence. arrogance, pride, haughtiness, superciliousness, இறுமாப்பு. 5. Elation, a style of living above one's rank, circumstances, மேட்டிமை. 6. Abusive words, நிந்தை. எடுத்தஎடுப்புவிடான். He will not desist from his purpose. வாயெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசுகிறவன். One who talks arrogantly. ஒருவன்மேலெடுப்பெடுத்தல். Publishing the faults of another. எடுப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be high. எடுப்பானவன், s. A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. That which is taken and carried away. எடுப்புத்தேர், s. A small portable shrine for the conveyance of an idol on men's shoulders--opp. to இழுப்புத்தேர். கல்லெடுப்பு, s. A funeral rite. எடை, v. noun. Taking up, தூக் குகை. 2. Weighing, நிறுக்குந்தொழில். 3. A weight, நிறையளவு. 4. Assumption, adoption, ஏற்றுக்கொள்கை. 5. [ex எடுப்பு, to rouse.] Rousing from sleep, &c., எழுப் புகை. ētṇṭai (p. 79) s. [prov. A corruption of இதணம்.] A kind of shelf suspended by cords, a rack for books, &c., பலகைத்தூக்கு. 2. A kind of stage raised in a place where water stands, or at a ford for passengers waiting for the ferry boat, நீர்த்துறையிதணம். 10)

ēntu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏந்தினேன், வேன், ஏந்த, v. a. To sustain, support, hold up, to carry in the hand--as a weapon, &c., to endure, to sustain a character, reputation, &c.; to support--as a beam, pillars, &c., தாங்க. 2. To raise or spread out hands --as a beggar; to raise a thing with the hands spread, கையேந்த. 3. To catch or receive in the hands or arms, to receive as flowing water, rain, &c., with the hands or with a vessel in the hands, பாத்திரமுதலி யவற்றையேந்த. 4. To hand up with extended arms, கையிலேந்திக்கொடுக்க. 5. v. n. To be elevated, exalted, உயர. ஏந்தியகொள்கையார். Persons of exalted character. (குறள். அதி. 9.) கையேந்திநிற்க. To stand begging with the arms extended. முன்றானையேந்தியிரத்தல். Spreading a corner of the cloth and begging. ஏந்திக்கொள்ள, inf. To hold up any thing. 2. To give a helping hand. ஏந்திசை, s. [in pros.] One of the three varieties of harmony in a verse consequent on a peculiar combination of metrical feet. ஏந்திசைச்செப்பல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to வெண்பா verses composed of வெண்சீர் வெண்டளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசைத்துள்ளல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to கலி verses of கலித் தளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசைத்தூங்கல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to வஞ்சி verses of ஒன்றியவஞ்சித்தளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசையகவல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to அகவல் verses of நேர்நேரியற்றளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திழையார், s. Women, the adorned, பெண்கள். (p.) ஏந்துகொம்பு, s. The tusks of an elephant, curved upward and terminating horizontally, யானைக்கொம்பு. 2. A curved palankeen pole, or pole for carrying a load, தாங்குகொம்பு. ஏந்தெழில், s. Surpassing beauty. பிள்ளையேந்த, inf. To take a child from another. 2. To carry a child in the arms. ஏந்தல், v. noun. Holding up, raising, &c., one of the three harmonies. ஏந்தல்வண்ணம், s. A poem in which the same words are repeated for the purposes of clearness and strength, ஓர்சந்தம். ஏந்தானம், s. [prop. ஏந்துதானம்.] A hanging shelf, a rack, grate, shelf to set things on, தூக்கங்கள். 2. The hands, or arms extended forward or locked with another's, to carry a child, a thing, &c., கையிலேந்துகை. ஏந்தானத்திலேகொண்டுபோகிறது. To carry on the hands so extended. ஏந்தி, s. A bearer, supporter, one invested with, கையேந்துபவன்--used in combination only. 23)
