arcṉ (p. 22) s. (plu. அரசர்.) A king, prince. இராசா. 2. A supreme master, God, எப்பொருட்குமிறைவன். 3. The planet Jupiter, வியாழம். 4. The title of the chief of the முக்குவர் caste, முக்குவர்தலைவன்.--Note. There were three famous kings; viz.: 1. சேரன். 2. சோழன். 3. பாண்டியன், which see. (p.) அரசரொளி, s. The splendor or glory of kings; it is of four kinds; viz.: 1. கொடை, gifts. 2. தலையளி, condescension. 3. செங்கோல், justice. 4. குடியோம் பல், care of his subjects. அரசர்குணம், s. The three properties of kings; viz.: 1. தூங்காமை, decision. 2. கல்வி, learning. 3. துணிவு, prowess. அரசர்க்குக்குழு, s. The five different officers of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Soothsayers, புரோகிதர், 3. Generals, சேனாபதியர். 4. Messengers, தூதர். 5. Spies, வேயர். அரசர்க்குத்துணைவர், s. The eight assistants of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Rulers, கருமாதிகாரர். 3. Relations, சுற்றம். 4. Door-keepers, கடை காப்பாளர். 5. Citizens of his capital, நகர மாக்கள். 6. Commanders, படைத்தலைவர். 7. Cavaliers, இவுளிமறவர். 8. Warriors on elephants, யானைவீரர். அரசர்க்குறுதிச்சுற்றம், s. The five confidential servants of a king, as, Companions, நட்பர்; Brahmans, அந்தணாளர்; Cooks, மடையர்; Physicians, மருத்துவர், and Prophets, நிமித்திகர். அரசர்சின்னம், s. The twenty-one distinguishing marks of a king. See இராசசின்னம். அரசர்நால்வகையியல்பு, s. The four special qualities of kings; viz.: 1. அஞ்சாமை, fearlessness, fortitude. 2. ஈகை, bountifulness. 3. அறிவு, discernment. 4. ஊக்கம், prowess. அரசர்வல்லமை, s. The four acts or powers of kings; viz.: 1. இயற்றல், making acquisitions. 2. ஈட்டல், collecting his revenues. 3. காத்தல், securing them. 4. வகுத்தல், distributing or expending them. அரசனாணை, s. The order or decree of a king, சாசனம். அரசனுயிர்காத்தோன், s. A unicorn, as the fabled protector of a king, காண்டாமிருகம். அரசன்விருத்தம், s. A kind of poem describing the country and magnificence of the king, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அரசி, s. A queen, இராசஸ்திரீ. 2. A lady, தலைவி. 42)

iyamaṉ (p. 48) s. Yama the god of death, regent of the south, and king of hell, (நரகம்.) the place of his capital, in which he sits in judgment on departed souls, sending the good to Swerga and the wicked to Naraka. In the latter there are 28,, divisions appropriated to different classes, according to their respective demerits. He is figuratively described as devouring souls for food. He takes the buffalo for his vehicle; and for weapons, the battle-axe, club and cord, நமன்; [ex யம, to stop, restrain.] Wils. p. 681. YAMA. 2. [Med. usage.] One of the two poisonous fangs of snakes, பரம்பினச்சுப்பற்களி லொன்று. இயமகணம்--இயமகிங்கரர்--இய மதூதர்--இயமபடர். s. The messengers of Yama, நமன்றூதர். இயமதூதி, s. One of the lower poisonous fangs of a snake. இயமலோகம், s. The place of departed souls, the purgatory of the Hindus--the kingdom of Yama. 3) *

uṟu (p. 67) கிறேன், உற்றேன், வேன், உற, v. n. To be, to exist, உண்டாக. 2. To feel, experience, suffer, enjoy, experience sensations--as heat, cold, பரிசிக்க. 3. To be in contact, to join closely, unite with, combine, கூட. 4. To happen, occur, befall -- as a good, or evil, சம்பவிக்க. 5. To accrue--as riches, சேர. 6. To profit, turn to account, பயனுற. 7. To obtain, கிடைக்க. 8. To arrive at, reach, வர. 9. To belong to peculiarly, to be appropriate, பொருந்த. 1. To be situated at, or be in a place, இரு க்க. 11. To dwell, reside, தங்க. (p.)-Note. This word is often joined to verbals or verbal roots to form new verbs, and the infinitive and other parts are used adverbially to express intensity, entireness, &c.--as குழுற்றது, it surrounded; ஊடுறச்சென் றது, it pierced, or penetrated. உறச்சிவந்தது. It is become very red. உறவளைக்கும்வில். A bow bent to the utmost. சுகமுறுநித்திரை. Refreshing sleep. கிலேசமுற்றேன். I became sorrowful. விருப்பமுற்றேன். I have conceived a desire. இன்பமுற்றேன். I was rejoiced. பயமுற்றேன். I grew frightened. நோயுறும்போது. When sickness befalls-பாவியருறும்பழி. The evil endured by the wicked for their sins. (இராமா.) சொல்லலுற்றேன்--சொல்லுற்றேன். I said, I have treated on--a formal or dignified mode of expression among authors. மீகீழிதழுறப்பம்மப்பிறக்கும். The letters ப் and ம் are produced by the contact of the upper and lower lips. (நன்.) முந்தினார்பின்னுறக்கடுகவோடினான். He ran so swiftly that all who started before him were left behind. உறவற்ற, inf. To dry up entirely. உறுந்தருணம்--உறுந்தறுவாய், s. Emergency, exigency, particular juncture. உறுவதுகூறல், v. noun. Giving an indirect answer to a question, எண்வகை விடையிலொன்று. உற்ற, rel. part. Uncommonly devoted, trusty. உற்றசெய்தி, s. True report, true news. உற்றது, appel. n. The thing as it is, the whole of it. உற்றதுசொல்ல, inf. To speak the truth. உற்றதுசொல்லஅற்றதுபொருந்தும். By telling the truth, misunderstandings are adjusted; truth is the surest resource through life. உற்றபண்புரைப்போர், s. Messengers, தூதர். (p.) உற்றமனிதன், s. A fit or proper person to transact an affair, one who can be trusted. உற்றவன், s. A friend, a relation, உறவோன். உற்றவிசேஷம், s. A proper or suitable expression. உற்றளவு, s. An accurate, genuine, fair measure, சரியளவு. 2. Genuine state of things, real news, உள்ளதன்மை. உற்றறிய, inf. To feel by the touch, be sensible to touch--as plants, &c., பரிசித்துணர. 2. To experience, to know by experience, பயின்றறிய. உற்றாண்மை, s. [prov. prop. உற்ற வுரிமை.] Interest as among near relatives and friends. 2. Close or intimate friendship, attachment. உற்றாண்மைபேச, inf. To speak for--as a near relative, or friend interested in one's welfare. உற்றாராய, inf. To investigate deeply, attentively, minutely, &c. உற்றார்--உற்றோர், s. Relations, உறவோர். 2. emaṉ (p. 73) s. The deity of Naraca or hell, where his capital is placed, in which he sits in judgment on the dead, and distributes rewards and punishments, sending the good to Swerga, and the wicked to the division of Naraca or Tartarus appropriated to their crimes: he corresponds with the Grecian god Pluto, and the judge of hell Minos. and in Hindu mythology is often identified with death and time; he is the son of Surya, or the sun, and brother of the personified Yamuna or Jumna river, நமன். Wils. p. 681. YAMA. (இயமன் and யமன்.) 2. The third fang of the cobra, நரகபாம்பின்பற்களிலொன்று. (p.) எமகணம்--எமகிங்கிரர்--எமதூதர், s. The messengers of Yama employed to execute his behests, apprehending souls and conveying them to Tartarus, நமன் றூதர். எமதூதன், s. The fourth fang of the cobra, நரகபாம்பின்பற்றிகளிலொன்று. எமலோகம், s. The place of the deceased; the purgatory of the Hindus; the kingdom of எமன். எமாஸ்திரம், s. aintu (p. 80) adj. or noun. Five, ஓரெண். ஐங்கணை, s. Five flowers feigned to be the arrows of Hindu cupid. (p.) ஐங்கணைக்கிழவன், Kama, the Hindu cupid, lit. lord of the five arrows, மன்மதன். (p.) ஐங்கரன், s. Ganesa, the five-handed. He is represented with an elephant's head, the proboscis or trunk is figuratively reckoned as a hand, விநாய கன். (p.) ஐங்கரற்கிளையோன், s. A name of Skanda, முருகன். 2. Verapattra, வீரபத் திரன். (p.) ஐங்கலம், s. Sixty marcals. ஐங்காதம், s. Five leagues. ஐங்காயம், s. The five kinds of காயம். (See காயம்.) 2. Other five kinds are used in witchcraft, viz.: 1. மிளகு, pepper. 2. வெந்தயம், dill. 3. ஓமம், cardamom. 4. வெள்ளுள்ளி, garlic. 5. பெருங் காயம், assaf&oe;tida. ஐங்காயத்தூள்--ஐங்காயவுண்டை, s. Powders of five ingredients given to women after child-birth, ஓர்மருந்து. ஐங்குரவர், s. The five superiors, ஐம்பெரியோர், viz.: King, அரசன்; guru, குரு; father, பிதா; mother, மாதா and elder brother, தமயன். In some classifications, உபாத்தியாயன் is placed instead of மாதா. ஐங்குழு, s. The five confidential servants of a king, அரசர்க்குக்குழு, viz.: 1. மந்தியர், ministers. 2. புரோகிதர், priests. 3. சேனாபதியர், generals. 4. தூதர், ambassadors. 5. சாரணர், spies. ஐங்கோணம், s. A pentagon, quinquangular figure, பஞ்சகோணம். ஐஞ்ஞூறு, s. Five-hundred, ஐந் நூறு. ஐந்தரு, s. The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. A fabulous fiveheaded cobra, of which each head is supposed to contain a very precious gem. It is said to be found in mountainous districts and to have the power of flying. ஐந்தவித்தல், s. The control of the senses, ஐம்பொறியடக்கல். ஐந்தவித்தானாற் றலகல்விசும்புளார்கோமானிந்திர னேசாலுங்கரி. Indra, the god of the celestials, is a living monument of the wonderful power of those who control the five senses. (குறள்.) ஐந்தனுருபு, s. The fifth case (இன்) --one of the ablatives denoting procession, similitude, limit, and means, ஐந்தாம் வேற்றுமையுருபு. மலையின்வீழருவி. Torrents rushing from the mountains. காக்கையிற்கரிதுகளம்பழம். The களா berry is as black as a crow. மதுரையின்வடக்குச்சிதம்பரம். Sethamparam is situated to the north of Madura. கல்வியிற்பெரியன்கம்பன். Kampan made himself great by learning. ஐந்தாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. See கிருத்தியம். ஐமீன், s. The thirteenth lunar asterism, அத்தநாள். (p.) ஐமுகன்--ஐயானனன், s. Siva, the five-faced, சிவன். (p.) ஐமுகாஸ்திரம், s. A five-pointed arrow, பஞ்சமுகாஸ்திரம். (p.) ஐம்பது, s. Fifty. ஐம்பத்தொன்று, s. Fifty-one. ஐம்பால், s. [in grammar.] The five பால், or the genders and numbers, ஐந்து பால். 2. The five modes of dressing a woman's hair, ஐவகையாகமயிர்முடிக்கை. 3. The hair of a female, மகளிர்கூந்தல். See பால். (p.) ஐம்புலம்--ஐம்புலன், s. The five senses, பஞ்சவிஷயம். ஐம்புலத்தடங்கான், s. He who is not comprehensible by the five senses-God, கடவுள். (p.) ஐம்புலம்வென்றோர், s. Ascetics, holy persons, முனிவர். (p.) ஐம்புலனடக்கல். Subjugation of the five senses. ஐம்புலனுகர்ச்சியினிறப்பன, s. The five kinds of creatures which perish by means of the senses, viz.: 1. சுவையரல்--மீன், fish, by the taste in catching at the bait. 2. நாற்றத்தால்-வண்டு, beetles, by the smell. 3. ஊற்றினால்-யானை, elephants, by copulation. 4. ஓசையால்-அசுணம், a species of bird by harsh sounds. 5. ஒளியால்-விட்டில், a species of insect, attracted by the light. ஐம்புலன்விழையான், s. An ascetic, முனிவன். (p.) ஐம்புலாதி, s. [prov.] Anxiousness, being full of cares. ஐம்பூதம், s. The five elements, பஞ்சபூதம். ஐம்பொறி, s. The five organs of sense, பஞ்சேந்திரியம். ஐம்பொறிநுகர்ச்சி, s. A bear--so called from the prehensile power of his four feet and mouth, கரடி. (p.) ஐவிரலி, s. [commonly ஐவேலி.] A creeping plant whose leaf is supposed to resemble the fingers, a pentadactyle, ஓர்கொடி, Bryonia laciniosa, L.-Note. In this plant the god Siva is said to have concealed himself when pursued by பஸ்மாசுரன், who had, by penance, obtained from him, as a boon, power to destroy all on whose head he should place his hand. ஐவிரல், s. The thirteenth lunar mansion, அத்தநாள். (p.) ஐவேலி, s. A place sacred to Siva, ஓர்சிவஸ்தலம். 2. A creeper. See ஐவிரலி. ஐவைந்து, s. Five of each, &c., ஐந்தைந்து. 11)

oṟṟu (p. 84) s. A mute consonant, மெய் யெழுத்து. 2. Spying, espionage, searching, agency, வேவு. 3. A messenger, an agent or emissary, தூதன். 4. A spy, வேவுகாரன். ஒற்றர், s. Spies, searchers, emissaries, வேவுகாரர். 2. The confidential agents or messengers of a prince whether employed in his own dominion or another's, for a good or bad purpose, தூதர். ஒற்றராலக்கணத்தேயுணர்ந்து. Being acquainted (with the counsels of the enemy) at that time through the spies. (பார.) கன்னலொன்றளவைதன்னிற்கந்தவேளொற்றன்யா க்கை சின்னபின்னங்களாகச்செய்குவன். I would tear to pieces the body of Veeravagu, Skandar's emissary, in the space of an hour. (ஸ்காந்.) ஒற்றளபு--ஒற்றளபெடை, s. The insertion of a consonant in verse to lengthen the sound. See அளபெடை. ஒற்றாடல், v. noun. The act of directing spies. ஒற்றாளுதல், v. noun. Employing spies or secret messengers, தூதரையாளுதல். ஒற்றுக்கேடு, s. The elision of a consonant. ஒற்றுக்கேட்டல், v. noun. Overhearing. ஒற்றுப்பெயர்த்தல், v. noun. [in மி றைக்கவி.] Constructing a species of verse so artfully that, independent of the main sense, other meanings may be contained in it, மிறைக்கவியினோருறுப்பு--as அம்புத்தலை, the head of an arrow is அப்பு த்தலை, when the mute is hardened--which means the new head--besides the original meaning. ஒற்றெழுத்து, s. An inanimate consonant, மெய்யெழுத்து. ஒற்றொழிபாட்டு, s. A verse that contains no mute consonants, மெய்யெழு த்தில்லாப்பாட்டு. 27)

ōlai (p. 84) s. A palm leaf of any species, an ola, பனை, தெங்குமுதலியவற்றினோலை. 2. The leaf of the தாழை or wild pine-apple tree, தாழையோலை. 3. An ola letter, a written ola, a writing or document, எழுதுமோலை. 4. The summons of Yama, நமனோலை. 5. (p.) (சது.) Sound, ஒலி. நாளையோலையுந்தூதரும்வரின். If to-morrow the messengers of Yama come with the summons. (வைரா.) ஓலைக்கட்டு, s. A bundle of palmyra leaves. ஓலைக்கணக்கர், s. Learners at school, பள்ளியிற்படிப்போர். ஓலைக்கணக்கரொலியடங்கும்புன்மாலை. The evening when the noise of learners at school ceases. (நாலடி.) ஓலைக்கணாட்டு, s. A chip of small piece of ola. ஓலைக்கண், s. Scallop or indentation of a palmyra leaf. ஓலைக்காந்தல், s. Cinder of the ola--as burning, floating flakes, dry pieces of ola. ஓலைக்குடை, s. An umbrella made of palm leaves. ஓலைக்கொடி, s. [prov.] An ola kite. ஓலைச்சிறகு, s. The half of a palmyra leaf. ஓலைச்சுருள், s. An ola letter inclosed in a செந்திரிக்கம். ஓலைதீட்ட, inf. To write on the ola, ஓலையிலெழுத. ஓலைதீட்டும்படை, s. A style, an iron pen, எழுத்தாணி. ஓலைபோக்க--ஓலைவிட, inf. To send a note. கூற்றைவெல்குவம்வருகவென்னாவோலைவிட்டு. Despatching a challenge to the regent of the dead-- ஓலைப்பூ, s. [vul.] The flower of the wild pine-apple tree, தாழம்பூ. ஓலைமுத்திரை, s. A stamp imprinted on a palmyra leaf. ஓலைமுரி, s. Unevenness of a palm leaf. ஓலையாள், s. An amulet made of palmyra leaf, tied as a remedy to the waist of children supposed to be possessed of a demon. ஔ--ஔகாரம். The twelfth or last of the vowels in Tamil, உயிரெழுத்தி லொன்று. ஔகாரக்குறுக்கம், s. The letter ஔ shortened in sound, சார்பெழுத்துக்களி லொன்று. 127) *

To send a message or messenger. தூதன், s. (fem. தூதி, தூதிகை, pl.தூதர், தூதர்கள்.) A messenger, a news-carrier, செய்தியறிவிப்போன். 2. An ambassador, nuncio, தானாபதி. 3. Agent, a spy, an emissary, ஒற்றன். 4. One who treats for another in love intrigues; சமாதானம் பேசுவோன். W. p. 418. DUTA. 5. The messenger who carries the news of a poisonous bite to the magician; by whose postures, gestures, words, &c., the fate of the bitten person is ascertained. 6. (Chirst, usage, with தேவ.) An angel. எமதூதன், s. A messenger of Yaman, the god of death, to carry away souls to his court. See எமன், இயமன். தூதனிலட்சணம், s. Posture, gestures. &c., of the messenger, with news of a snake bite. தூதன்சொல்லிலட்சணம், s. Words of the above messenger, of which the letters are counted to ascertain the patient's fate. தூதாள், s. (pl. தூதாட்கள்.) A messenger, a spy, as தூதன். தூதிற்பிரிவு, v. noun. (in love poetry.) Separation of husband from his wife to go on a message for the king. தூதுசொல்ல, inf. To deliver a message or errand. தூதுநடக்க--தூதுபோக, inf. To go on an errand, to act as a messenger. 25)

(p.) மொட்டைக்குல்லா, s. A flat cap. மொட்டைத்தலை--மொட்டந்தலை, s. A bald head. மொட்டந்தலையிற்பேன்போலேவெளியாயிருக்கின் றது. It is as evident as a louse on a bald pate. மொட்டந்தலையிற்பட்டங்கட்டியாளவந்தானோ..... Has that bald [incompetent] head come to govern us? மொட்டைச்சி, s. [masc. மொட்டையன், pl. மொட்டையர்.] Bald female. நாலுமொட்டையர்மாத்திரம்நிற்கிறார்கள். There are only four bald [senseless] pates. மொட்டைதட்ட, inf. To strip a tree of fruit, &c. எல்லாம்மொட்டைதட்டிக்கொண்டுபோய்விட்டா ன். He has taken away every thing. மொட்டைப்பார்ப்பாத்தி, s. A brahman widow.--Note. A brahamani who has lost her husband must shave her head; or her hair, adding to her beauty, will entice men, and so be a cord to bind her husband in hell. மொட்டைப்புத்தி, s. Stupidity, bluntness of intellect. மொட்டைமாடு, s. [also மோழை.] A cow, or any of the genus bos without horns. மொட்டையடிக்க, inf. To shave the head entirely, as the widows of brahmans, and of the கோமுட்டி caste. 2. To shave the head of a criminal, as a punishment. மொட்டையாய்ப்போக, inf. To become blunt. மொட்டையாய்வெட்ட, inf. To miss the road, to go astray. வழிதுறை, s. [lit. road and harbor.] Means to an end, auxiliary aid. வழிதுறைதெரியாமல்அலைகிறான். He wanders about not knowing the road, or harbor. வழிதுறையில்லாமற்பேசினான். He spoke without method. வழித்தடை, s. Impediments, hinderance in a way or journey. வழித்துணை, s. A fellow traveller. 2. A guide. வழித்தோன்றல், s. A son, மகன். (p.) வழிநாள், s. To-morrow, மறுநாள்--in Stoke's Cural. வழிநாளை. வழிநூல், s. A copy of an original work. See நூல். வழிபட, inf. To enter a way, மார்க்க மடைய. 2. A journey. வழிப்பிரிவு, s. A place where two or more ways meet. வழிப்போக, inf. [v. noun. வழிப்போக் கு.] To go forward, proceed. 2. To intermeddle with other's affairs. வழிப்போக்கிலேஅவனைக்காண்பாய். You will meet him on your way. வழிப்போக்கர், s. [pl.] Way-faring men, travellers. வழியடைக்க, inf. To impede, to obstruct the way. தடுக்க. வழியனுப்ப, inf. To go a little distance with one setting out for a journey, out of respect. வழியாக, [as a preposition.] By or through-as உள்வழியாக, by your means. வழியுரைப்போர், appel. n. [pl.] Messengers, தூதர். (சது.) வழிவகை, s. [pl. வழிவகைகள்.] means, resources, expedients, உபாயம். வழிவழியாய்ப்போக, inf. To go by different ways. வழிவிட, inf. To take leave of any one going on a journey after proceeding with him some distance, வழியனுப்ப. 2. To make a way for water to flow; to contrive a way of relief, from some difficulty, தடைநீக்க. 3. The nine orders in heaven according to Romanists: 1. பத்திச்சுவாலிகர், seraphs; 2. ஞானாதிக்கர், cherubim; 3. பத்திராசனர், those who surround the throne of God --These are considered to be invested with, dignity of the first order; 4. நாத கிருத்தியர், those employed on gracious errands, messengers; 5. சத்துவகர் or சத்தி கர், celestial powers; 6. பலத்தவர், those averting evils--These are considered as invested with dignity of the second order; 7. பிதாத்மிகர், principalities or princes of earthly kingdoms; 8. அதிதூதர், archangels; 9. தூதர், angels, ministering spirits.
