aṭṭam (p. 9) --அஷ்டம், s. Eight, எட்டு. (p.) Wils. p. 92. ASHTAN. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of feet with which the invocation of a poem may begin; four indicative of good, and four of evil. See கணம். அஷ்டகம், s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. arikaṇṭam (p. 24) s. An iron grate, or frames of cross bars, worn on the neck by devotees, as a mode of self-torture, ஓர்விரத வேஷம். 2. Teasing, annoying, vexing as the continual application of creditors for payment or other constant troubles, தொந் தரை; [ex *அரி, et கண்டம்.] (பணவிடுதூது.) 2)

arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

iyamaṉ (p. 48) s. Yama the god of death, regent of the south, and king of hell, (நரகம்.) the place of his capital, in which he sits in judgment on departed souls, sending the good to Swerga and the wicked to Naraka. In the latter there are 28,, divisions appropriated to different classes, according to their respective demerits. He is figuratively described as devouring souls for food. He takes the buffalo for his vehicle; and for weapons, the battle-axe, club and cord, நமன்; [ex யம, to stop, restrain.] Wils. p. 681. YAMA. 2. [Med. usage.] One of the two poisonous fangs of snakes, பரம்பினச்சுப்பற்களி லொன்று. இயமகணம்--இயமகிங்கரர்--இய மதூதர்--இயமபடர். s. The messengers of Yama, நமன்றூதர். இயமதூதி, s. One of the lower poisonous fangs of a snake. இயமலோகம், s. The place of departed souls, the purgatory of the Hindus--the kingdom of Yama. 3) *

A very small insect that lays eggs on books, papers, &c., mars them, &c., and afterwards assumes wings and becomes a moth, புத்தகங்களையரிக்கும்பூச்சி. (See சிதல்.) 2. The arrow of arrows, இராமனம்பு. 3. A medicine, ஓரௌடதம். இராமன்றேவி, s. Sita, the wife of Rama. இராமாநுசன், s. The younger brother of Rama, இலக்குவன். 2. The name of one of Vishnu's followers who propagated his religion, விட்டுணுசமயாசாரியரிலொ ருவர். இராமாயணம், s. uṟu (p. 67) கிறேன், உற்றேன், வேன், உற, v. n. To be, to exist, உண்டாக. 2. To feel, experience, suffer, enjoy, experience sensations--as heat, cold, பரிசிக்க. 3. To be in contact, to join closely, unite with, combine, கூட. 4. To happen, occur, befall -- as a good, or evil, சம்பவிக்க. 5. To accrue--as riches, சேர. 6. To profit, turn to account, பயனுற. 7. To obtain, கிடைக்க. 8. To arrive at, reach, வர. 9. To belong to peculiarly, to be appropriate, பொருந்த. 1. To be situated at, or be in a place, இரு க்க. 11. To dwell, reside, தங்க. (p.)-Note. This word is often joined to verbals or verbal roots to form new verbs, and the infinitive and other parts are used adverbially to express intensity, entireness, &c.--as குழுற்றது, it surrounded; ஊடுறச்சென் றது, it pierced, or penetrated. உறச்சிவந்தது. It is become very red. உறவளைக்கும்வில். A bow bent to the utmost. சுகமுறுநித்திரை. Refreshing sleep. கிலேசமுற்றேன். I became sorrowful. விருப்பமுற்றேன். I have conceived a desire. இன்பமுற்றேன். I was rejoiced. பயமுற்றேன். I grew frightened. நோயுறும்போது. When sickness befalls-பாவியருறும்பழி. The evil endured by the wicked for their sins. (இராமா.) சொல்லலுற்றேன்--சொல்லுற்றேன். I said, I have treated on--a formal or dignified mode of expression among authors. மீகீழிதழுறப்பம்மப்பிறக்கும். The letters ப் and ம் are produced by the contact of the upper and lower lips. (நன்.) முந்தினார்பின்னுறக்கடுகவோடினான். He ran so swiftly that all who started before him were left behind. உறவற்ற, inf. To dry up entirely. உறுந்தருணம்--உறுந்தறுவாய், s. Emergency, exigency, particular juncture. உறுவதுகூறல், v. noun. Giving an indirect answer to a question, எண்வகை விடையிலொன்று. உற்ற, rel. part. Uncommonly devoted, trusty. உற்றசெய்தி, s. True report, true news. உற்றது, appel. n. The thing as it is, the whole of it. உற்றதுசொல்ல, inf. To speak the truth. உற்றதுசொல்லஅற்றதுபொருந்தும். By telling the truth, misunderstandings are adjusted; truth is the surest resource through life. உற்றபண்புரைப்போர், s. Messengers, தூதர். (p.) உற்றமனிதன், s. A fit or proper person to transact an affair, one who can be trusted. உற்றவன், s. A friend, a relation, உறவோன். உற்றவிசேஷம், s. A proper or suitable expression. உற்றளவு, s. An accurate, genuine, fair measure, சரியளவு. 2. Genuine state of things, real news, உள்ளதன்மை. உற்றறிய, inf. To feel by the touch, be sensible to touch--as plants, &c., பரிசித்துணர. 2. To experience, to know by experience, பயின்றறிய. உற்றாண்மை, s. [prov. prop. உற்ற வுரிமை.] Interest as among near relatives and friends. 2. Close or intimate friendship, attachment. உற்றாண்மைபேச, inf. The deity of Naraca or hell, where his capital is placed, in which he sits in judgment on the dead, and distributes rewards and punishments, sending the good to Swerga, and the wicked to the division of Naraca or Tartarus appropriated to their crimes: he corresponds with the Grecian god Pluto, and the judge of hell Minos. and in Hindu mythology is often identified with death and time; he is the son of Surya, or the sun, and brother of the personified Yamuna or Jumna river, நமன். aintu (p. 80) adj. or noun. Five, ஓரெண். ஐங்கணை, s. Five flowers feigned to be the arrows of Hindu cupid. (p.) ஐங்கணைக்கிழவன், Kama, the Hindu cupid, lit. lord of the five arrows, மன்மதன். (p.) ஐங்கரன், s. Ganesa, the five-handed. He is represented with an elephant's head, the proboscis or trunk is figuratively reckoned as a hand, விநாய கன். (p.) ஐங்கரற்கிளையோன், s. A pentagon, quinquangular figure, பஞ்சகோணம். ஐஞ்ஞூறு, s. Five-hundred, ஐந் நூறு. ஐந்தரு, s. The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. A fabulous fiveheaded cobra, of which each head is supposed to contain a very precious gem. It is said to be found in mountainous districts and to have the power of flying. ஐந்தவித்தல், s. The control of the senses, ஐம்பொறியடக்கல். ஐந்தவித்தானாற் றலகல்விசும்புளார்கோமானிந்திர னேசாலுங்கரி. The fifth case (இன்) --one of the ablatives denoting procession, similitude, limit, and means, ஐந்தாம் வேற்றுமையுருபு. மலையின்வீழருவி. Torrents rushing from the mountains. காக்கையிற்கரிதுகளம்பழம். The களா berry is as black as a crow. மதுரையின்வடக்குச்சிதம்பரம். Sethamparam is situated to the north of Madura. கல்வியிற்பெரியன்கம்பன். Kampan made himself great by learning. ஐந்தாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. In this plant the god Siva is said to have concealed himself when pursued by பஸ்மாசுரன், who had, by penance, obtained from him, as a boon, power to destroy all on whose head he should place his hand. ஐவிரல், s. oṟṟu (p. 84) s. A mute consonant, மெய் யெழுத்து. 2. Spying, espionage, searching, agency, வேவு. 3. A messenger, an agent or emissary, தூதன். 4. A spy, வேவுகாரன். ஒற்றர், s. Spies, searchers, emissaries, வேவுகாரர். 2. The confidential agents or messengers of a prince whether employed in his own dominion or another's, for a good or bad purpose, தூதர். ஒற்றராலக்கணத்தேயுணர்ந்து. Being acquainted (with the counsels of the enemy) at that time through the spies. (பார.) கன்னலொன்றளவைதன்னிற்கந்தவேளொற்றன்யா க்கை சின்னபின்னங்களாகச்செய்குவன். The elision of a consonant. ஒற்றுக்கேட்டல், v. noun. Overhearing. ஒற்றுப்பெயர்த்தல், v. noun. [in மி றைக்கவி.] Constructing a species of verse so artfully that, independent of the main sense, other meanings may be contained in it, மிறைக்கவியினோருறுப்பு--as அம்புத்தலை, the head of an arrow is அப்பு த்தலை, when the mute is hardened--which means the new head--besides the original meaning. ஒற்றெழுத்து, s. An inanimate consonant, மெய்யெழுத்து. ஒற்றொழிபாட்டு, s. A verse that contains no mute consonants, மெய்யெழு த்தில்லாப்பாட்டு. 27)
