To take off, take away, extract, take out, remove a stain, dirt, humor, &c., or one body from another, chemically, or otherwise combined, ஒன்றிலிருந்தெடுக்க. 3. Will he who cannot pick out a stone from rice be able to lift the stone architrave of a temple vestibule? i. e. he who is incapable of little matters must be incapable of great ones. விழுந்தவனையெடாமலுதைக்கலாமா. Is it proper to kick, instead of raising, a fallen man? இந்தச்சீலையையெந்தக்கடையிலெடுத்தாய். In what bazaar did you buy this cloth? புல்லெடுக்கிறதரை. Ground covered with an exuberant growth of grass. எடாதஎடுப்பு, s. Living above one's rank, circumstances, means, &c., engaging in an enterprise, beyond one's powers, &c. எடாதஎடுப்பெடுக்கலாகாது. It is improper to engage in an enterprise above one's circumstances. எடுகூலி, s. Porterage, hire for carrying burdens, சுமைக்கூலி. எடுத்தடிமடக்கு, s. Retort, turning a person's reasons or remarks against himself, confuting one by his own arguments, anticipating a person in word, or action, in order to check, or thwart him in his object; interrupting one in speaking, &c. 2. Temerity, rashness; speaking, answering, or acting rashly, துணிவு. எடுத்தடிவைக்க, inf. To begin to step--as a child, காலைப்பெயர்த்துவைக்க. எடுத்தபடி, adv. Suddenly, at once, promptly, extemporaneously. எடுத்தமொழியினெய்தவைத்தல், v. noun. An author's forming rules applicable to the examples he finds-one of the உத்தி. எடுத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which, the weight of the article weighed is used for the scale. எடுத்தாட்சி, s. A thing much in use, வழக்கம். எடுத்தார்கைப்பிள்ளை, s. A docile, tractable, yielding person; one who has no opinion of his own. எடுத்துக்கட்ட, inf. To fabricate, invent. எடுத்துக்கட்டு, v. noun. Fabrication, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. Random. எடுத்தேற்றமானவேலை, s. A thing done at random. எடுத்தேற்றியாயிருக்க, inf. To be unequal, uneven, discrepant in size, character, rank, &c.; to be irregular, இணக்கமின்றியிருக்க. எடுபட, inf. To be taken up, out, away, &c., நீக்கப்பட. 2. To rise, part, to be detached, displaced, dislodged, எழும்ப. 3. To be abolished, terminated, அழிந்துபோக. 4. To be led away by evil, ill-advice, நியாயந்தவற. 5. To leave one's station, place of residence, &c., to leave and be no more heard of (used in an ill sense), காணாமற்போக. 6. To be overcome in argument--as a party in controversy, &c., to be confuted, தோற்றுப்போக. அவள்பேச்சினாலயலெல்லாமெடுபடுகின்றது... The whole neighborhood is raised by her clamor. எடுபட்டவள், s. A lewd woman, குடும்பத்தைவிட்டுவெளிப்பட்டவள். எடுபட்டுப்போக, inf. To be raised --as a siege. 2. To be abolished. 3. To be defeated. அங்கிருந்தபள்ளிக்கூடம்எடுபட்டுப்போயிற்று.... The school which existed there formerly has been abolished. உன்னால்நானெடுபட்டுப்போவேனா. Am I to be defeated by you? எடுபாடு, s. Celebrity, a high style of living, notoriety in a good or bad sense, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Abolition, அழிகை. 3. Gaiety, in dress, in a woman, a lax, or lascivious disposition, மேட்டிமை. எடுப்பிக்க, inf. To cause to raise, or lift up. மனிதவதாரமெடுக்க, inf. To assume the human form, to become incarnate. வெறியெடுக்க, inf. To be intoxicated. வெறியெடுத்தவன், s. One who is intoxicated. பெயரெடுக்க, inf. To assume an appearance, a name, a character, &c.; to acquire a name, celebrity. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To disentangle thread. வாயாலெடுக்க--வாயிலெடுக்க, inf. To vomit. தொழிலெடுக்க, inf. To enter upon an occupation. 2. To suspend one from office. பூவெடுக்க, inf. To gather flowers. கிணறெடுக்க, inf. To dig a well. 2. [prov.] To select a spot for a well in reference to the situation of the house and other surrounding objects that ill luck may not result, as also to the nature of a soil or the depth at which water may be found, judged of by the produce of the land, &c. வயிறெடுக்க--வயிறுகடுப்பெடுக்க, inf. To have a looseness. தானெடுத்துமொழிதல், v. noun. [in works of science.] The adoption of rules, or language from other authors. See உத்தி. எடுப்பு, v. noun. The act of taking off, taking up, தூக்குகை. 2. Elevation, உயரம். 3. Taking in hand, undertaking attempt, engagement, தொடங்குகை. 4. Insolence. arrogance, pride, haughtiness, superciliousness, இறுமாப்பு. 5. Elation, a style of living above one's rank, circumstances, மேட்டிமை. 6. Abusive words, நிந்தை. எடுத்தஎடுப்புவிடான். He will not desist from his purpose. வாயெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசுகிறவன். One who talks arrogantly. ஒருவன்மேலெடுப்பெடுத்தல். Publishing the faults of another. எடுப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be high. எடுப்பானவன், s. A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. That which is taken and carried away. எடுப்புத்தேர், s. A small portable shrine for the conveyance of an idol on men's shoulders--opp. to இழுப்புத்தேர். கல்லெடுப்பு, s. A funeral rite. எடை, v. noun. Taking up, தூக் குகை. 2. Weighing, நிறுக்குந்தொழில். 3. A weight, நிறையளவு. 4. Assumption, adoption, ஏற்றுக்கொள்கை. 5. [ex எடுப்பு, to rouse.] Rousing from sleep, &c., எழுப் புகை. eḷ (p. 75) s. [vul. எள்ளு.] One of the nine kinds of grain, sesamum, from the seeds of which an oil is extracted, used for food, bathing, &c., திலம். Sesamum orientale. See தானியம் and எண்ணெய்.-Note. The ள் of this word becomes ட் and ண் by permutation. எள்ளத்தனையைமலையத்தனையாக்க. To make a mountain of a sesamum seed, to exaggerate. எள்ளளவு--எள்ளுப்போலே. As much as a sesamum seed, a very little. எள்ளளவுநம்பிக்கையுமில்லை. Utterly unworthy of confidence. 2. Destitute of belief, confidence, &c. எள்ளுக்குளெண்ணெய்போலெங்குநிறைந்தகடவுள். God who pervades the universe, as oil the sesamum seed. எட்கடை--எட்கிடை--எட்பிரமா ணம். As much as a sesamum seed, எள்ள ளவு. 2. A standard of measure in regard to space, ஓரளவு--eight எள் make a நெல் or grain or rice; eight grains of rice one அங்குலம், an inch, &c. எட்பாகு, s. A kind of porridge made of sesamum seed, எள்ளுப்பாகு. எண்ணெய், s. [impr. எண்ணை.] Rape-seed oil. 2. (fig.) A common name for oils of all kinds. எண்ணெயூற்ற, inf. To express oil, எண்ணெய்வடிக்க. எண்ணெயெரிக்க, inf. To prepare medicinal oils by burning, in which the drugs are rolled up in a bit of cloth which is dipped in oil and set on fire; the oil which drops from it is used as a medicine, தைலமெரிக்க. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பு, s. The color of rape-seed oil, or dark brown. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பி, s. A female whose skin resembles rape-seed oil, not so much in regard to its color as its soft and beautiful appearance. எண்ணெய்க்காப்பு, s. Oil for bathing an idol, எண்ணெயபிஷேகம். எண்ணெய்க்காரன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். எண்ணெய்ச்சாணை, s. A hone prepared for use by oiling. எண்ணெய்ச்சாயம், s. Oil paint, எண்ணெயாற்செய்யப்பட்டசாயம். 2. Dyeing a cloth red after soaking it in margosa oil, எண்ணெயிற்றோய்த்தேற்றப்பட்டசாயம். எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு, s. Indigestion produced by eating oily food, எண்ணெய் வயிற்றிற்றங்குகை. 2. A clotted state of the hair from the oil not being well washed out, எண்ணெய்மயிரில்விடாமை. 3. A bad smell--as of oil, எண்ணெய்நாற்றம். எண்ணெய்ச்சீலை, s. Cloth dipped in oil to be applied to wounds, எண் ணெய்த்துணி. 2. A piece of cloth put round the waist before bathing, எண் ணெய்க்கோவணம். எண்ணெய்தேய்க்க, inf. To rub oil. எண்ணெய்தொட்டுப்பொட்டுவைக் க. inf. To dip the finger in oil before bathing dropping seven drops on the floor for the சிரஞ்சிவியர், who are supposed in consequence to grant long life. எண்ணெய்பிறக்க, inf. To form as oil by boiling. எண்ணெய்பூச, inf. To oil, anoint, besmear with oil. எண்ணெய்பொருத்த, inf. To put medical oil on the head or other parts of the body, and to rub it in, மருந்தெண் ணெய்பூச. எண்ணெய்ப்பற்று, s. Adherence of oil or unctuous matter to the bowels, hair, clothes, &c., oil, greasy substance in food--as in fish or on the dress from cooking, எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. எண்ணெய்வழுக்கு, v. noun. Being greasy--as oil, &c., எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. 2. Shining, sleek, glossy, bright, எண்ணெய் மினுக்கு. எண்ணெய்வாணிகன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். ஆமணக்கெண்ணெய், s. Castor oil. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil for the head. விளக்கெண்ணெய், s. Lamp oil. புன்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from புன்கம் seeds. சூட்டெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from the residuum of the margosa berry. மருத்தெண்ணெய், s. Medical oil. குருந்தெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from குருந்தம் seeds. இலுப்பெண்ணெய், s. The இலுப் பை oil. வேப்பெண்ணெய், s. Margosa oil. தேங்காயெண்ணெய், s. Cocoanut oil. வடியெண்ணெய், s. Clarified medical oil. கொதியெண்ணெய், s. A species of boiled oil, used for medicinal purposes. புளியெண்ணெய், s. A medical oil. புன்னையெண்ணெய், s. The oil extracted from புன்னை seeds. நல்லெண்ணெய், s. Sesamum oil used for the hair and the skin, &c. மரவெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from wood. தெளிவெண்ணெய், s. Clear margosa oil poured off from the sediment. ஊற்றெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted by pressing or pounding the seeds. மீனெண்ணெய், s. Fish oil. எள்ளுண்டை--எள்ளுருண்டை, s. A pastry made into balls, said to be a very strengthening food, ஓர்சிற்றுண்டி. எள்ளுந்தண்ணீருமிறைக்க, inf. To pour water to the manes of deceased persons on sesamum seeds and sacrificial grass held in the hand. எள்ளோரை, s. Sesamum and rice boiled and mixed with ghee--one of the சித்திரான்னம். காட்டெள்ளு, s. A kind of sesamum found in uncultivated places. காரெள்ளு, s. The common எள். 2. A distinct species of எள். பேரெள்ளு, s. A large kind of sesamum. கடலெள்ளு, s. A species of sesamum. வெள்ளெள்ளு, s. A species of sesamum bearing white seed. சிற்றெள்ளு, s. eẕu (p. 75) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், எழ, v. n. To rise, ascend, get up, rise by one's own power, to rise as a thing by its own levity, rise as a heavenly body, a bird, a kite, &c., to soar, &c., எழும்ப. 2. To stir, be excited, roused, &c., மனங்கிளர. 3. To become resuscitated, rise to life, உயிரடைந்தெழும்ப. 4. To rise to eminence, தலைமைப்பட. 5. To rise and spread as a rumor, பரம்ப. 6. To rise as wind, clouds, &c., கிளம்ப. 7. To rise as a sound, singing, talking, clamor, &c., ஆரவாரமெழ. 8. His hand does not open to give any thing. அதைச்செய்யவெனக்குக்கைகாலெழவில்லை. My hands and feet would not stir (rise) to do such a thing. அதைச்சொல்லநாவெழாது. My tongue will not stir (rise) to speak so. கூரேயிறெழாதகுழவி. A babe that has not yet teethed. எழுஞாயிறு, s. The rising sun, உதயாதித்தன். 2. Quinsy, a mortal disease which begins with the rising sun; when it begins in the night it is termed படுஞாயிறு. (Mat. Ind. Opp.) எழுந்தபடி--எழுந்தமானம், s. At random, in an unpremeditated manner, carelessly, மனதிலேதோன்றியபடி. எழுந்தருள, inf. To rise, become present or manifest as the divinity in an idol on consecration; to be present as a great personage, &c., தோன்ற. 2. To repair to a place--as a sage, holy person, a king, &c., பெரியோர்வர. எழுந்தருளுநாயகர்--எழுந்தருளும் விக்கிரகம், s. The secondary idol in a temple, உச்சவவிக்கிரகம், representing the same deity as the first, carried about in processions while the other remains stationary--opp. to the மூலவிக்கிரகம். எழுந்தருள்படி, s. A procession of heathen gods. எழுந்திருக்க, inf. To rise, ascend, get up, &c., எழ, spoken chiefly of men. --Note. This is more full and expressive than எழ, alone. எழுந்துபோக, inf. To depart, to go to meet a person. எழுந்தேற்றம், s. A Roman catholic procession, உற்சவம். 2. Pride, selfconsequence, arrogance, பெருமை. 3. Rashness, presumptuousness, துணிவு. எழுமுகனை, s. The very beginning of a process, or period, தொடக்கம். எழுவான், s. The east, the place of sun-rising, oriens, கிழக்கு, eastern--opp. to படுவான். எழுவான்றொடங்கிப்படுவான்மட்டும். From east to west. என்வீட்டக்கெழுவானிலே. East of my house. எழல்--எழுகை, v. noun. Rising, ascent, எழுச்சி. எழுச்சி, v. noun. Rising, ascent, elevation, எழும்புகை. 2. Stir, excitement, activity, readiness, promptitude, முயற்சி. 3. Haughtiness, aspiring, ambition, resolution, இறுமாப்பு. 4. A disease, or soreness of the ears, காதிலெழும்புமோர்புண். 5. Inflammation of the eyes, கண்ணோயி லொன்று. எழுச்சிக்கொடி, s. Inflammation of the eyes causing red streaks, கண்ணிற் படருமோர்நோய். எழச்சிபாடுவோன், s. One who sings to rouse a prince, or a great man of a morning. துயிலெழுப்புதல்பாடுவோன். எழுச்சிமுரசம், s. A drum beaten to rouse a king, commandant, garrison, &c. of a morning, துயிலெழுப்புமுரசம். எழுச்சியிலை, s. A leaf to cure ophthalmia, கண்ணோய்மருந்திலை. படையெழுச்சி, s. A military expedition, marching to battle. பள்ளியெழுச்சி, s. A kind of poem sung to rouse princess, &c. from sleep. மேலெழுச்சி--மேலெழுந்தவாரி, [prov.] Superficiality. மேலெழுச்சியாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak carelessly. மனவெழுச்சி, v. noun. Energy, persevering application. எழுமை, v. noun. Height, elevation, உயர்ச்சி. 11)

ē (p. 76) . One of the seven long vowels, நெட்டுயிரிலொன்று. 2. An arrow, அம்பு. 3. A particle of emphasis, &c., இடைச்சொல். In நன்னூல், it is said to have six different uses: 1. பிரிநிலை, a distinguishing particle-as அவனேசொன்னான், it was he who said it. In some cases, it would be used for self or selves in the plural where the connection demanded it--as he himself said it. 2. வினா, interrogative: அவனேகொண் டான், was it he that bought it? 3. எண், enumeration or copulative--as சாத்தனே கொற்றனே இருவரும்வந்தார், Sattan and Kottan both came; கடலே, கரையே, மரமே, மலரே, வளையே, இவ்வைந்து, the sea, the land, the tree, the flower, the conch, these five. 4. ஈற்றசை or அசைநிலை, a terminate expletive --as மல்லலோங்கெழில்யானைமருமம்பாய்ந்தொளித்த தே, (the weapon) lodged itself in the breast of the beautiful and powerful elephant. 5. தேற்றம், certainty, confidence, appeal, emphasis--as இதுள்ளதே, this is really true; முயற்குக்கோடில்லையே, the hare has no horns. 6. இசைநிறை, a poetic expletive for completing the metre--as ஏஏ இவ ளொருத்திபேடி, she is a hermaphrodite; பேடியோவென்றாரே, he said, is she an hermaphrodite? To have an abiding sense of the importance of virtue and religion, சன்மார்க்கத்திலுறுதியாயி ருக்க. 5. To have an unwavering faith in the essentials of religion, to embrace or take firm hold of religious instructions, &c., தேவபத்தியிலுறுதியாயிருக்க. 6. To grasp, resort to--as the soul for its last refuge, பற்ற. 7. To provide, be provident, be economical, வீண்செலவுசெய்யாது வைக்க. (p.) கதவிலரேதற்சார்ந்தார்வண்ணங்கடைப்பிடியாதார். Unkind are they who are forgetful of the situation of their friends. (காரிகையுரை.) மற்றதன்கள்ளங்கடைப்பிடித்தனன்று. It is important to have an abiding sense of the wiles of Yama. வாழ்க்கைக்குவேண்டும்பொருளறிந்துகடைப்பிடி த்தலும். There are eight other kinds of benevolence. 1. பிறர்க்குப்பொருள்வரவையுவத்தல், rejoicing in a neighbor's wealth; 2. பிறர்செல்வம்பொறுத்தல், being content in seeing a neighbor's welfare; 3. பிறர்கருமத் திற்குடன்படுதல், assisting in other's business, with interest; 4. தீமைக்கஞ்சல், fearing to do evil; 5. பிறர்கருமமுடிக்கவிரைதல், hastening to assist others; 6. பிறரையந் தீர்த்தல், removing other's doubts; 7. நன் மைகடைப்படித்தல், preserving in doing good; 8. பிறர்துயர்க்கிரங்கல், commiserating the distress of others; sympathizing with the afflicted. 19) *
