The art which a scientific or literary author employs in treating his subject-such as the general plan, divisions, subdivisions, mode of discussion, examples, quoting authorities, showing how the sentiments of others agree with, or differ from his own, &c. In the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், thirty-two particulars are given as proper to be kept in view by such writers, தந்திரவு த்தி. urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. [in gram.] The connection of a word with the பயனிலை by omitting a particle, வேற்று மையுருபுமுதலியதொக்குநிற்றல்.--It embrasces six varieties; 1. வேற்றுமைத்தொகை, the omission of the sign or from of the case, as பொன்கொடுத்தான், for பொன்னைக்கொடுத் தான். 2. வினைத்தொகை, a verb without the sign of the tense, combined with a noun, as கொல்புலி for கொன்றபுலி, கொல்கின்றபுலி, கொல்லும்புலி. 3. பண்புத்தொகை, omission of the adjective sign ஆகிய or ஆய in combining the qualifying epithet with the noun, as கருங்குவளை for கருமையாகியகுவளை, or two nouns in apposition, as ஆதிபக வன். 4. உவமைத்தொகை, the combination of two words with the omission of the sign of comparison, as பான்மொழி for பால் போலுமொழி. 5. உம்மைத்தொகை, omission of the particle உம், as கபிலபாணர் for கபிலனு ம்பாணனும்; also இராப்பகல் for இராவும், பகலும். --Note. In this combination. there is commonly no reduplication. 6. அன்மொ ழித்தொகை, a metonomy or omission of a word, commonly the name of a person, immediately after any of the five preceeding ellipses, as பொற்றொடி. for பொற் றொடியையுடையாள், the golden braceletdamsel. தொகைநிலைச்செய்யுள், s. Of நூல் or sacred learning there are நூ three: 1. முதனூல், an original scientific work regarded as divine, the Vedas; 2. வழிநூல், a work derived from and agreeing with the original, being an enlargement, as the Vedanta; 3. சார்புநூல், a work following the original, secondary, but differing in some particulars; collateral writings, as the Adwitta. நூற்பலகல். Study many books. (Avv.) நூலில்லாமல்மாலைகோத்தல். Stringing flowers without a thread; i. e. fabricating. நூற்மறைதெரிந்துசீலத்தொழுகு. Search the Shastras, and lead a regular life. (Avv.) நூலச்சு, s. A weaver's reed, நெசவச்சு. 2. [prov.] A goldsmith's mould for drawing wire, கம்பியச்சு. நூலடி, s. [prov.] A line or membrane passing from the privy parts to the anus. 2. A mark made with the carpenter's line, நூற்குறி. நூலட்டவணை, s. Contents of a book. நூலரங்கேற்ற, inf. See அரங்கேற்ற. நூலறிவு, s. Knowledge of science. நூலாசிரியன், s. The author of a work. நூலாதாரம், s. A primer or first book; the alphabet; [ex ஆதாரம்.] நூலாமாலை, s. Craft, artifice, devices. (R.) நூலாய்வோர், appel. n. [pl.] Critics, reviewers, revisers. நூலான்புடை, s. A spider's web. [Madura usage.] See ஒட்டடை. நூலான்பூச்சி, s. The spider, சிலந்திப் பூச்சி. (Beschi.) நூலியற்கை, s. Moral of legal rules. நூலியாப்பு, s. The composition of a work, being of four kinds: 1. தொகுத்தல், substance in brief, compendium, synopsis; 2. விரித்தல், detail, amplification; 3. தொகைவிரி, compendium and detail; 4. மொழிபெயர்ப்பு, translation. நூலிழந்தவள், appel. n. A widow; a woman divested of her wedding-badge, தாலியறுத்தவன். நூலிழை, s. A single thread. நூலிழைக்க, inf. To reel yarn, to disentangle yarn from the skein and wind it on the reel, to unwind yarn. நூலுண்டை, s. A ball of thread, yarn, cotton, &c., நூலுருண்டை. 2. A weaver's bobbin with the yarn, தார்க்கெண்டை. நூலுத்தி, s. The proper arrangement of words, as தந்திரவுத்தி. நூலுந்தாலியும். The wedding string and badge. நூலுரைப்போன், appel. n. A teacher. நூலுரையுணர்வோர், appel. n. [pl.] Learned men, கற்றோர். நூலுறிஞ்சி, appel. n. A weaver. (in contempt.) நூலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a treatise. See உறுப்பு. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To buy thread as a weaver. 2. See எடு, v. நூலேணி, s. A rope-ladder, கயிற்றேணி. 2. [in mythol.] Fancied threads or strings, as a guide, by which to pass and repass through the sky, to and from the world of the celestials. 3. [prov.] The shrouds of a vessel, பாய்மரத்தேணி. நூலோடுதல், v. noun. Warping for the loom, பாவோடுதல். நூலோட்ட, inf. To sew or stitch loosely, to haste. நூலோர், s. [pl.] Brahmans as wearing the sacred thread, பார்ப்பார். 2. The learned, the literati, அறிவுடையோர். 3. Ministers of state, மந்திரியர். (சது.) நூல்கேட்க, inf. To learn a science under a teacher. The patron of a work, or a person who moves the author to write a book. நூல்திரிக்க--நூல்முறுக்க, inf. To twist yarn. நூல்நிமிண்டுதல், v. noun. Twisting broken threads together. நூல்நிமிண்டுகிறபேச்சு. Unconnected talk. நூல்போடுதல், v. noun. Marking with a thread, as a carpenter, &c., குறிபோடு தல். 2. Putting on the thread of the Brahman or other caste, பூணூல்போடுதல். நூல்போட்டுப்பிளத்தல், v. noun. Marking and cleaving, as timber. 2. Making an exact division, commonly into halves. 3. [in irony.]Administering strict or rigid justice. நூல்வலை, s. A fisherman's net. நூல்வல்லோர், s. [pl.] The learned, the literati, கல்விமான்கள். 2. Ministers of state, மந்திரியர். நூல்வழக்கு, s. The sentiments or theory of a work, நூலினேற்பாடு. நூல்வழிநிற்றல், v. noun. Acting up to the moral precepts of a book. நூல்விடுதல், v. noun. Spinning a thread and letting itself down, as a spider, or caterpillars. நூல்விதி, s. Injunction, prescription or rule laid down in books. நூல்விரிவு, s. Amplification or detail of a work. நூற்கயிறு, s. String made of thread. நூற்கருத்து, s. The sentiments of an author. See கருத்து. 2. The author's meaning of any given passage. நூற்சுழி, s. A skein of thread. நூற்குச்சு, s. A tassel of cotton thread. நூற்குஞ்சம், s. A number of threads composing the warp in a loom. See குஞ்சம். 2. A skein. நூற்குற்றம், s. The ten faults or defects in a literary composition. See under குற்றம். நூற்சரடு, s. Cotton thread for stringing beads. நூற்சார்பு, s. Sentiments inculated in a work, &c. See சார்பு. நூற்சுருள்--நூற்சுருணை, s. A skein or clew of thread. நூற்பகந்திரம், s. A venereal ulcer on the peritoneum. See பகந்திரம். நூற்படுகு, s. A weaver's warp. நூற்பந்து, s. A ball of thread. நூற்பயன், s. The general ends or objects of literature. See நாற்பொருள். நூற்பழக்கம், v. noun. Acquaintance with science, literature, &c. நூற்பா, s. A kind of அகவல் verse, commonly employed by lexicographers, சூத்திரப்பா. 2. Warp in weaving, தறியிற் பிணைக்கும்பா. நூற்பாவகவல், s. The நூற்பா verse. நூர்புலவர், s. [pl.] Persons of accomplished or distinguished learning. நூற்புறத்திணை, s. Proof from established authority; a term used by Beschi in Tonnool. நூற்புறனடை, s. Notes of an explanatory character given at the end of a work. See புறனடை. நூற்பொருள், s. Subjects treated of or inculcated in a book. 2. Contents of a book, நூலட்டவணை. நூற்றீட்சை, s. Spiritual illumination by the Shastras. See தீட்சை. நூற்றார், s. A weaver's bobbin; [ex தார்.] நூனயம், s. Advantage or pleasure of learning, கல்விநயம். 2. Superiority of one work over another, on the same subject, நூலின்மேன்மை. நூனாழி--நூல்நாழி, s. A weaver's shuttle. See நாடா. நெ. A letter compounded of ந் and எ. 12)

pl (p. 301) adj. Many, several, diverse, sundry, manifold, numerous, &c., ஒன்றல்லன. [Compare Sa. Bahula.]-- In combin. பல், பற், பன், as பல்பொருள், பற்பல, பன்மணி. பலதுளிபெருவெள்ளம். Many drops make a great flood; i. e. many small sums make a great amount. பலதீட்டுக்கொருமுழுக்குப்போடுகிறது. One bathing for various pollutions; i. e. many difficulties settled at once. பலகலப்பு--பலகலவை, s., Mixture of diverse things, miscellany. பலகலப்பு ஒருசாதி. A caste of mongrels; lit. several mixtures in one caste. பலகாயம், s. Different spices. பலகாரியம், s. Various things or affairs. பலகாலம், s. Many days, a long time. பலகாலும். Various times, frequently, often. பலகோசம், s. Land registered in the names of several. (Govt. usage.) பலசந்தமாலை, s. A poetic treatise containing one hundred stanzas, in which the verses are not uniform, but various and diverse, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். பலசம்பத்து, s. Various acquisitions, various kinds of wealth. பலசம்பாரம், s. Spices. 2. Different spices. பலசரக்கு, s. Various commodities, grocery, drugs or spices. பலசரக்குக்கடை, s. A grocer's shop. See கடை. பலசோலி, s. Many business. பலதரம், s. Sundry times, often. 2 Various kinds. பலதாரம், s. Plurality of wives, பல மனைவி. பலதிரட்டு, s. A compilation, as கலம் பகம். பலதிரட்டுவாகடம், s. A medical compilation. பலதுறை, s. (lit.) Many ways, பல வழி. 2. (fig.) Sundry affairs, ways, &c.,நர்னாபேதம். பலதுறைப்பட்டு விரிந்தசெய்யுள். An extensive poem consisting of a great variety of themes. பலதுறையிலும் நடக்கிறார்கள். They are conducting themselves in various ways, religious or other. பலநாட்செய்தி, s. Reports, narrations, annals, chronicles of olden time, written or spoken. See நாள். பலபட, inf. To become many, to be divided into many parts, to ramify. 2. To be various, diversified, multiform, பலவிதப்பட. 3. To be divided as a party into factions. பலபட்டடை, s. People of various castes. See பட்டடை. பலபட்டறை, s. As பலபட்டடை. 2. A storeroom, in which diverse articles of furniture are kept. பலபட்டுக்கொள்ள, inf. To differ, dissent, to jar. பலபண்டம், s. Provisions, stores, various articles. See பண்டம். பலபல--பலப்பல--பல்பல--பல்ல பல--பற்பல, adj. Many, various, &c., distributively. பலபாடு, s. Various forms of distress, நானாவருத்தம். 2. Various seenes of disgrace,பலநிந்தை. 3. Diverse kinds of business, பலதொழில்,--Note. With உம், it signifies, great variety of suffering. &c. வயிறுவளர்க்கப் பலபாடும் படவேணும். It is necessary to make various exertions to procure a livelihood. பலபாடும்பட்டுத்தேறியிருக்கிறேன்.I am now at last quite easy and tranquil, after so many troubles and hardships. பலபெயர்த்திரிசொல், s.. Different obscure names denoting an object. பலபொருளொருசொல், s. A word with different meanings. பலபொருள்குறித்த ஓரிடைத்திரிசொல், s. A particle difficult to be understood, and capable of being applied to different things. பலமுகம், s. Various sides, directions, ways, means, sources, points பலபக்கம். பலமுகத்திலும்வந்தார்கள். They came in all directions. 2. They fell on him on all sides. பலமுகமாயோடுமாறு. A river flowing in various directions. பலமுகத்திலுஞ்செலவு. Expenses on all sides. பலமுறை, s. Sundry times, as பலதரம். பலமுறையும். Many times, often times, frequently. பலவகை, s. As பலவிதம். பலவகைத்தாது, s. The seven constituents of the body, as சத்ததாது. பலவரி, s. A row of simple consonants, in the alphabet,ஒற்றின்வருக்கம். பலவழித்தோன்றல், s. A nephew, மரு மகன். (சது.) பலவறிசொல், s. [in gram.] A word in the neuter plural, அஃறிணைப்பன்மைச்சொல். பலவிசை, s. As பலமுறை. பலவிதம், s. Multiformity, multifariousness, நரனாவகை. பலவினீட்டம், s. A collection of many things. (p.) பலவினைத்திரிசொல், s. A difficult verb expressing different subjects,பலவகை வினைத்திரிசொல். பலவின்கூட்டத்தற்கிழமை, s. An inseparable quality relating to a noun of multitude--as படையதுதொகுதி. 2. A number of armies; opposite of ஒன்றன்கூட்டம்-implying abundance of the same kind of things--as நெல்லதுகுப்பை, a heap of rice. பலவின்பால், s.
