The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. tikku (p. 237) s. (Sa. Dik.) Region, quarter, point of the compass, direction, திசை. 2. Protection, shelter, aid, ஆதரவு. (c.) எனக்குத்திக்குமில்லைத்திசையுமில்லை. I have no support whatever. திக்குத்திசைதெரியாதஇருட்டு. Darkness so great that one knows not the points of compass or which way to go. திக்குநோக்கித்தெண்டனிடல். Making obeisance toward the place where a person is-a term of respect or reverence used in epistolary writings. திக்கெல்லாம்வெடிபடப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks loud enough to disturb all the points of compass. அஷ்டதிக்கு, s. The eight points of the compass are: 1. கிழக்கு, East. 2. தென் கிழக்கு, South-east. 3. தெற்கு, South. 4. தென்மேற்கு. South-west. 5. மேற்கு, West 6. வடமேற்கு, North-west. 7. வடக்கு, North. 8. வடகிழக்கு, North-east. Some add two others விசும்பு, the heavens or etherial regions, and பாதாளம், the abyss. தசதிக்கு--தசதிசை, s. The ten points for astrological purposes especially in choosing spots for building houses, &c., are named after certain animals. 1. கிழக்கு. கருடதிசை. 2. தென்கிழக்கு. பூனை த்திசை. 3. தெற்கு. சிங்கத்திசை. 4. தென்மேற்கு. கனகதிசை. 5. மேற்கு. நாகதிசை. 6. வடமே ற்கு, எலித்திசை. 7. வடக்கு. யானைத்திசை. 8. வடகிழக்கு. முயற்றிசை. 9. விசும்புத்திசை. 1. பாதாளத்திசை, which see.--Note The animals of the opposite points are natural foes to each other, the one being pursuer, and the other, the pursued. திக்கடைப்பு--திக்கெல்லை, s. [prov.] Boundaries of land, as mentioned in title deeds. திக்கற்றவன், appel. n. A forlorn, destitute, forsaken person. திக்காக, inf. [adverbiality.] In the direction of, toward. கிழக்குத்திக்காகப்போ. Go directly east. திக்காதிக்கு--திக்காலுக்கு, [prov.] In various directions, here and there, பலதிசையிலும். திக்காலுக்கொருத்தராய்ப்போய்விட்டார்கள். They are gone, are scattered in various directions. திக்கியானை, s. The elephants of the eight cardinal points, male and female supporters of the earth are:-1. East Male ஐராவதம். Female அப்பிரமை. 2. S. E. ,, புண்டரீகம். ,, கபிலை. 3. South. ,, வாமனம். ,, பிங்களை. 4. S-W. ,, குமுதம். ,, அனுபமை. 5. West. ,, அஞ்சனம். ,, தாமிரகருணி. 6. N. W. ,, புட்பதந்தம். ,, சுதந்தி. 7. North. ,, சாருவபூமம். ,, அஞ்சனை. 8. N. E. ,, சுப்பிரதீபம். ,, அஞ்சனாவதி. திக்குக்கட்ட--திசைகட்ட, inf. To bind or fortify the cardinal points by turning to each point, repeating the incantation, as இந்திராயநம, and prostrating in worship, to the regent whose protection is sought; then turning to the next point. திக்குக்கட்டு--திக்குப்பந்தனம், v. noun. Fortifying one's self on all sides by incantations, invoking the protection of the regents of the cardinal points. திக்குநோக்க, inf. To look in any direction, as expecting a friend, &c. 2. To direct one's course to any point. திக்குப்பாலகர்--திசாபாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, as protectors of the earth, situated beyond the seventh circumambient sea, and invoked in the daily worship, &c. 1. இந்திரன், Indra, regent of the south-east, whose sign is இடி, the thunderbolt. 2. அக்கினி, Agni, regent of the south, east whose sign is புகை, smoke. 3. இயமன், Yama, regent of the south, whose sign is சிங்கம், lion. 4. நிருதி, Niruti, regent of the south-west, whose sign is நாய், a dog. 5. வருணன், Varuna, god of the waters, regent of the west, whose sign is இடபம், a bull. 6. வாயு, Vayu, god of the wind, regent of the north-west. whose sign is கழுதை, an ass. 7. குபேரன், Kuvera, god of riches, regent of the north, whose sign is யானை, an elephant. 8. ஈசானன், Isanan, regent of the northeast, whose sign காகம், a crow. திக்குப்பலி--திக்குப்பூசை, s. Performing puja. around a temple, toward the eight points, to obtain the protection of their regents. திக்குப்பல்லி, s. The chirping of a lizard, as indicating good or ill, according to the direction on which it is heard. திக்குமாறாட்டம், v. noun. Confusion concerning the points of compass, as திசைமயக்கு. திக்குவிசயம், s. Conquering all regions. திக்குவிசயம்பண்ண, inf. To conquer hostile powers. திக்குளார், s. Owners of boundary lands. 27)

A name for the town of Periacolom, as தென்கரைதாலுகா, (Govt. usage.) தென்கலை, s. Southern literature; i. e. Tamil, தமிழ். 2. As தென்கலையார். தென்கலைத்திருமண், s. A sacred earth used by தென்கலையார், in marking their foreheads,--Note. They extend the middle mark below the other two to the bridge of the nose. தென்கலையார், s. A sect of Vishnuvas who maintain diferent tenets from the வடகலையார். தென்கால்--தென்காற்று, s. The gentle south wind. தென்கிழக்கு--தென்கீழ், s. South-east. தென்கீழ்த்திசை, s. The south-east region. தென்கீழ்த்திசைப்பாலன்--தென்கீழ்த்தி சையிறை, s. The regent of the southeast, அக்கினிதேவன். தென்குமரி, s. A sacred river that disembogues itself near Cape Comorin. ஓர்நதி. 2. Cape Comorin named after the river. தென்கோடு, s. The southern horn of the crescent moon, the word for moon being understood. See வடகோடு. தென்சார்--தென்பக்கம், s. Southern side, parts or region, &c., தென்பரதம், s. One of the four கண் டம், as தென்பாரதம். தென்பாண்டி, s. The district south of Madura. See தமிழ். தென்பாரதம், s. The southern division of India. See பாரதம். தென்பாரிசம்--தென்பால், s. The southern side or region. தென்பாரிசத்தார், s. Inhabitants of the southern regions. தென்புலம், s. The region or world of the deceased, பிதிர்கள்வாழுமிடம். 2. A corn-field lying to the south. தென்புலத்தார், s. The manes or souls of the deceased, supposed to be in the south. தென்புறம், s. As தென்பக்கம். தென்பூமி, s. Southern parts of India, any part south of Mount Meru, மேரு வின்றென்பால். 2. The southern parts of the earth. தென்மதுரை, s. South Madura, as distinguished from வடமதுரை, north Madura, ஆலவாய். தென்மலை, s. The southern mountain Pothiya, supposed to be the residence of Agastia, பொதியம். 2. As சோலைமலை. தென்மலையாளம், s. South Travancore. தென்முகம், s. Facing the south, southern direction. தென்முனை, s. South pole. தென்மேல்--தென்மேற்கு, s. South-west. தென்மேற்றிசை, s. The south-west region. தென்மேற்றிசைப்பாலன், s. The regent of the south-west, நிருதி. தென்விதேகம், s. One of the nine divisions of the known continent. See கண் டம். தென்றமிழ், s. The Tamil language, as peculiar to the south, செந்தமிழ். தென்றல், s. Yama, king of the southern region and god of death, இயமன். தென்றேசம், s. The southern region. தென்னன், s. A titular name of the Pandyan dynasty of Madura. தென்னிரேபதம், s. nāy (p. 274) s. A dog, ஞமலி, 2. The sign of the regent of the south-west, நிருதியின்குறி. 3. Conical pieces in the play of chess or ticklack, சூதாடுகருவி.--Of நாய், there are கடல்நாய், a seal; மரநாய், palmyra dog; நீர்நாய், மீனாய், a beaver; செந்நாய், a wild dog, கோ ணாய் or கோநாய், a wolf, (c.) நாயும்பேயுங்கொண்டுபோகின்றன. Dogs and devils (strangers) carry it away. நாய்க்குமுழுத்தேங்காய்தக்குமா. Of what use to the dog is an unbroken cocoanut? நாய்வேஷம்போட்டால்குலைத்தேதீரவேணும். If one disguise himsel as a dog he should bark. நாயரஞ்சி, s. As நாயுருவி. (R.) நாயாட்டம், Dog-like, mean, servile. நாயீ, s. A dog fly; [ex இ. நாயுணி, s. A kind of tick. நாயும்புலியும், s. A kind of play, with seeds, stones, &c., in squares. நாயுருவி, s. [sometimes நாய்குருவி.] A kind of plant, Achyranthes aspera, L. which forms one of the nine kinds of sacrificial fuel. See சமித்து.-- The root is used as a dentifrice, and from the skin of the root, a decoction is made as an aperient for infants. The leaves are bruised and applied to scorpion bites as a specific; [ex உருவி, penetrating as a biting dog.] There are two kinds, செந் நாயுருவி, the red, and வெண்ணாயுருவி, the white, which see. நாயுறக்கம், s. Very slight sleep, as of a dog. நாயோட்டம், s. A dog's pace, spoken of a horse, dhoney, &c. நாய்குருவி, s. As நாயுருவி. (R.) நாய்க்கடி, s. Bite of a dog. நாய்கடிபூனைக்கடிபடுகிறார்கள். They are snaring like cats and dogs. நாய்க்கடுகு, s. A small plant like mustard, as நாய்வேளை. நாய்க்குட்டி, s. A young dog, a puppy. நாய்க்குணம்--நாய்த்தனம், s. Doggedness. See குணம். நாய்க்கோலம், s. Mean appearance, shabiness of dress, &c. நாய்ச்சீரகம், s. A plat. See சீரகம். நாய்த்திசை, s. South-west. See திக்கு. நாய்த்துளசி, s. A kind of wild Marjoram. See கஞ்சாங்கோரை. நாய்வேளை, S. A plant, as நாய்க்கடுகு, Cleome viscosa, L. See நல்வேளை. நாய்நரம்பு, s. [prov.] A kind of catgut put round the neck of children for whooping cough. நாய்நாக்கி, s. A species of Euphorbia neriifolia, as இலைக்கள்ளி. நாய்ப்பயறு, s. A leguminous plant, Indigofera glabra, L. நாய்ப்பாகல், s. A medicinal plant of the Senna species, Bryonia maysorensis. (R.) நாய்ப்புடுக்கன், s. A large tree, Cynometra cauliflora, ஓர்மரம். நாய்ப்புடோல், s. A plant, ஓர்செடி. நாய்முகன், s. One who has a face like a dog. See நாய்மூஞ்சி. நாய்முருகை, s. [prov.] A kind of coral stone, ஓர்முருகைக்கல். நாய்முள்ளி, s. A thorny plant, Solanum, Ind. நாய்மூஞ்சி, s. The face of a dog. 2. As நாய்முகன். நாய்விட்டைக்கல், s.
