aḷvai (p. 33) s. Measure, a definite quantity, அளவு. 2. Bound, limit, எல்லை. 3. A measure, or thing to measure with, அளவுக்கருவி. 4. A medium of knowledge, காட்சிமுதலியபிரமாணங்கள். 5. The name of a logical work, அளவைநூல். 6. Day, நாள். There are eight ways of obtaining the true knowledge of a thing or occurrence; viz.: 1. காட்சி, by the senses, especially the sight--by experiments, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிர மாணம். 2. அனுமானம், by inference, by drawing conclusions from what has been admitted or is supposed true--as நெருப்பிற்கு வியாப்பியம் புகையென்றறிதல், where smoke is, there is fire. 3. ஆகமம், by the testimony or assertions of great men, either orally or in writing, பெரியோர்வாய்ச்சொல். 4. அரு த்தாபத்தி, by deduction established from premises, அந்நியதாவநுபபத்தி--as இரவிலுணவி ல்லாமற் பகலுண்ணாதவனுக்குப் பருத்தல்கூடாதென் னுமுணர்ச்சி. 5. உவமானம், by similarity or likeness, comparison, மரை பசுப்போலென்னுமு ணர்ச்சி. 6. அபாவம், proof of non-existence-as முன்னில்லை, பின்னில்லை, முழுதுமில்லை, ஒன்றி ன்மற்றொன்றில்லை. 7. ஐதீகம், by traditional testimony--as இம்மாத்திற்பேயுளதென்பது, this tree is haunted by the devil. 8. சம்பவம், proof of co-existence--as ஆயிரத்தினூறுண்டெ னல், where a thousand is, there is a hundred. (p.) அளவையாகுபெயர், s. A metonymy in reference to measure, weight, number, &c. In Nannool, four kinds are given, எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், எடுத்தல ளவையாகுபெயர், முகத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், and நீட்டலளவையாகுபெயர். 15) *

kāy (p. 104) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், காய, v. n. To be heated, boiled, cooked, &c., as liquids by fire, நீர்முதலியனகாய. 2. To be warmed, heated, &c., by fire or the sun; to be withered, tanned, &c., slightly--as vegetables by the sun; to become parched--as the lips or mouth; to be dried and hardened--as the ground; to dry, உலர. 3. To warm one's self, to become warm, குளிர்காய. 4. To be hot--as in a fever; to heat--as the fever, சுரங்காய. 5. To shine, to emit rays, பிரகாசிக்க. 6. To be dried--as the humors of the body; to become emaciated, to suffer from hunger, மெலிய. 7. To dry up, to begin to heal--as a sore, a wound, a boil, &c.; to cicatrize, புண்ணாற. 8. To be displeaced, indignant, provoked; to show signs of anger, கோபிக்க. 9. To be distressed by love-sickness caused by the moon, the warm season. &c., காமத்தால் சோர. 1. To be furious, சினக்க. 11. v. a. To speak sharply; to reprove, scold, reprimand, கடிய. 12. To emit, to shed, to pour forth, கால. 13. To dislike, to offend, வெ றுக்க. 14. To cut, sever, வெட்ட. 15. To warm one's self at the fire. சரீரங்காய, inf. To be emaciated--as the body, by fever, hunger, labour, journeying, &c. நிலங்காய, inf. To be dry--as the ground after rain. நிலாக்காய, inf. To shine--as the moon; to have moon-light. வாய்காய, inf. To be dry--as the mouth, lips, &c. வாய்வயிறுகாய, inf. To be parched--as the mouth and heated as the stomach; to suffer with hunger. வெயில்காய, inf. To bask in the sun, to warm one's self in the sun. வெயில்காய்கின்றது. cuvṟu (p. 197) கிறது, சுவறினது, ம், சுவற, v. n. To dry up, evaporate, be exhausted by evaporation, வற்ற. 2. To be imbibed as water in the pores of the body, உறிஞ்ச. 3. To be absorbed or to change its substance--as water thrown on fire, its supposed proximated element, நெருப்பிற்சு வற. (c.) சுவறக்குடிக்க, inf. To drink up. (c.) சுவறத்தேய்க்க, inf. [vul. சோறத்தேய்க் க.] To rub in oil, &c., so as to be absorbed in the system. சுவறிப்போக, inf. To be absorbed, to be exhausted. எல்லாமங்கேசுவறிப்போயின. tuvṭṭu (p. 249) கிறேன், துவட்டினேன், வேன், துவட்ட, v. a. To wipe off moisture after bathing, &c., துடைக்க. 2. To boil or stew with little water so as to make the food thick, கறிதுவட்ட. 3. To boil meat, நெருப்பிற் புலர்த்த. 4. To cause to adhere, தோயச்செய்ய; [ex துவள், v.] (c.) துவட்டிக்கொண்டுசாப்பிட்டுவிடலாம்.
