aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. A charitable man. 2. A sage, an anchorite. 3. A Brahman. 4. Argha. இல்லறம், s. Domestic life. துறவறம், s. Religious or ascetic life. ஈரறம், s. The two species of life above-mentioned. 47)

etukai (p. 73) s. Initial rhyme, commonly occurring in the second letter of every line in the stanza. (See தொடை.) 2. [vul.] (fig.) Agreement, union, consonance, similarity, பொருத்தம். (p.) தலையாகெதுகை, s. In rhyme, similarity of the first class in which all the letters except the initial of the first foot in each line through the stanza are the same--as சொற்போர்புரிவர்நான்மறை யாறங்கமுணர்ந்ததொழுகுலத்தோர், விற்போர்புரிவர் நெடியசிலையிராமனனையவிறல்வேந்தர், பொற்போர் புரிவர் பிறர்பொருளுந்தம்போற் பேணிப்புரிவணிகர், நெற்போர்புரிவரந்நகரில்வேளாண்குலத்து நெறியி னரே. இடையாகெதுகை, s. Consonance of a medial kind in which the second letter only ryhmes--as அகரமுதலவெழுத் தெல்லாமாதி, பகவன்முதற்றேயுலகு. கடையாகெதுகை, s. Consonance of an inferior order including every kind except the two given above. ஆசெதுகை, s. An exception to the general rule of எதுகை; i. e. when the second letter of the first line is ய, ர, ல, or ழ, it may be omitted in the following lines when necessary. வழியெதுகை, s. The agreement of the second and third letters in the first, second, and sometimes the third feet in every line through the stanza. நெடிலெதுகை, s. The rhyming of the long consonants in a poem--as ஆவாவென்றேயஞ்சினராழ்ந்தாரொருசாரார், கூகூ வென்றேகூவிளிகொண்டாரொருசாரார், மாமாவென் றேமாய்ந்தனர்நீந்தாரொருசாரார், ஏகீர்நாகீரென்செய் துமென்றாரொருசாரார். இனவெதுகை, s. The rhyming of the same class of consonants in a poem. It consists of three kinds: 1. வல்லின வெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the வல்லினம் consonants, உ-ம். தக்கார்தகவிலரென்பதவரவ ரெச்சத்தாற்காணப்படும். 2. மெல்லினவெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the மெல்லினம் consonants, உ-ம். அன்பீனுமார்வமுடைமையதுவீனுநண்பென் னுநாடாச்சிறப்பு. 3. இடையினவெதுகை, the consonance which occurs when the second letter of each line of a stanza is any one of the இடையினம் consonants, உ-ம். எல்லா விளக்கும் விளக்கல்ல சான்றோர்க்குப் பொய்யாவிளக்கேவிளக்கு. 51) *

eytu (p. 73) கிறேன், எய்தினேன், வேன், எய்த, v. a. To approach, come upon, அணுக. 2. To obtain, acquire, attain, பெற் றுக்கொள்ள. 3. To experience, enjoy, or suffer, பயனனுபவிக்க. 4. v. n. To arrive at, come, சேர. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. (p.) மெய்ஞ்ஞானநெறியெய்துகிறது. To obtain true wisdom. என்பாவத்திற்குப்பயனென்னையெய்திற்று. kāntam (p. 104) s. The magnet, load-stone, magnetic iron-stone, அயக்காந்தம், அரக்குக்காந் தம், உருளைக்காந்தம் ஊசிக்காந்தம், பலகைக்காந்தம், கற்காந்தம், தகட்டுக்காந்தம், are different varieties of magnet. 2. A class of mineral stones--as the சூரியகாந்தம், சந்திரகாந்தம். 3. (p.) Beauty, loveliness, agreeableness, அழகு. Wils. p. 29. KANTA. 4. [in rhetoric.] eulogy, commendation or praise within proper bounds; one of the ten particulars of the வைதருப்பம் mode of description, வைதருப்பநெறியில் ஒன்று. (தண்டி.) காந்தமும் ஊசியும்போல். kulai (p. 127) s. A cluster; a bunch of fruit, flowers, keys, &c., கொத்து. 2. Notches or contrivances in a bow, to receive the string, விற்குதை. 3. The lower end of an arrow, அம்பின்குதை. 4. An artificial bank of a paddy field, a dam, a causeway, செய் கரை. 5. The viscera--as the liver, &c., ஈரற்குலைமுதலியன. என்குலைபதைக்கின்றது. My heart goes pita-part; my heart palpitates. ஒருகுலைக்காய், s. A person of the same consanguinity; lit. a fruit of the same cluster. குலைகுலையாய், adv. In bunches. முந்திரிகைப்பழங் குலைகுலையாய்த் தூங்குகின்றது. The grapes hang in thick clusters. குலையோடே, adv. All at once, the whole without exception. குலைதள்ள--குலைபோட, inf. To form --as clusters, bunches, &c., of fruits or flowers. குலைதறி, v. noun. Cutting off a bunch of fruit at once. குலைநெறியற்றேங்காய், s. [prov.] Cocoanuts, pressed and deformed in the bunch. குலைநெருக்கம், v. noun. Being crowded --as a bunch or bunches of fruits, &c. குலைவிலை, s. [prov.] The sale of palmyra fruits while on the tree. திராட்சக்குலை, s. A bunch of grapes. குலைமுட்டி--குலையெரிவு, s. Heartburning. குலையாத்திரம், s. An unsatiable appetite; a carving for food. குலைநோய்--குலைவலி, s. Heart-burn, cardialgia. குலைபடுவன், s. [prov.] Tumors, ulcers, &c., in the liver, lungs, &c. நெஞ்சாங்குலை, s. [local.] The breast; thorax. 2. The pit of the stomach. குலைக்கல், s. Bezoar, கோரோசனம். 50)

koẕu (p. 146) s. A plough-share, a coulter, காறு. 2. adj. Fat, rich, &c. See கொழுமை. கொழுச்சென்றவழிநுண்ணுசிசெல்லுமாபோல்..... Just as a small needle passes with ease through a passage made by a coulter. கொழுக்கட்ட--கொழுத்தைக்க, inf. To fasten the iron point to the plough share. (R.) கொழுச்சிராய், s. [prov.] A piece of wood which fastens the coulter to the plough. கொழுத்தட்ட, inf. To sharpen the plough-share--a yearly practice. கொழுமீதி--கொழுமுதல், s. The owner's portion of the produce of a field, deducting the rent to the government. கொழுக்கட்டை, s. A kind of steamed cake, ஓர் சிற்றுண்டி. பிடிகொழுக்கட்டை, இலைக்கொழுக்கட்டை, and ஆவிக்கொழுக்கட்டை, are different kinds of கொழுக்கட்டை pastry. கொழுக்கட்டைக்குத் தலையுமில்லைக் காலுமில்லை, குறவருக்கு நெறியுமில்லை முறையுமில்லை. The கொழுக்கட்டை cake has neither head nor foot, and the குறவர் people have no manners nor principle. இருப்புக்கதவிடித்துத் தவிட்டுக்கொழுக்கட்டை யெடுக்கிறதா? Does one break through an iron door to steal cakes made of bran, i. e., no man of sense wearies himself for trifles. 126)

neṟi (p. 281) s. Swelling of the kernels, under the chin, or in the arm pits, &c., சுளுக்கு. 2. Temples, கண்மண்டைக்குழி. 3. Way, road, path, வழி. 4. Moral way, way of virtue, or religion, நீதிமார்க்கம். 5. Rectitude, propriety, morality, honesty, truth, chastity, யதார்த்தம். 6. Justice, equity, righteousness, நீதி. 7. Method, means, expedient, manner, விதம். 8. Rule, system, செவ்வை. 9. Row, order, line, series, வரிசை. 1. State of mind, spirit, temper, குணம். 11. If a scorpion stings a wall, will there be a swelling on the cow-post? i. e. irrelevant causes sould not be alleged. நெறிகுலைக்க, inf. To vitiate one's morals, &c. See குலை, v. நெறிகெட்டவன்--நெறிகேடன்--நெறி யில்லாதவன். appel. n. An unjust or immoral man. 2. One regardless of religious ceremonies, &c., நெறிகேடு, v. noun. Injustice, immorality. நெறிக்கோரை, s. A kind of grass, ஓர் கோரை. See நெறிநெட்டிக்கோரை. நெறிதப்ப--நெறிதவற, inf. To deviate from propriety, equity, or religious rule. நெறிநிற்க, inf. To adhere to the path of virtue or religion.
