pakkam (p. 288) --பக்ஷம்--பட்சம், s. Side, புறம். (See அக்கம்.) 2. Contiguity, nearness, அருகு. 3. Place, இடம். 4. Faction, interest, party, பிரிவு. 5. Affection, friendship, kindness, attachment, நட்பு. 6. The half of a lunar month for fortnight. See அபரபக்ஷம், பூர்வபக்ஷம். 7. An argument, thesis, proposition advanced, கோட்பாடு. 8. PAKSHA.--Note. பக்கம், [in logic.] A twofold relation:--1. புறப்பக்கம், or புறுத்துப்பக்கம், an inference regarding exterior or secular matters; 2. உட்பக்கம், or அகப்பக்கம், connected with mental or religious truths. Each of these is applicable to two species of comparison; 1. நிகர்பக்கம், துல்லியபக்கம், ஒப்பாம்பக் கம், or சபக்கம், proper comparison, or deduction from analogy; thus for புறப்பக்கம், there is smoke, therefore there is fire; and for உட்பக்கம், regarding moral actions, originated in the mind; analogy refers them to maya, மாயை, as their basis. The agreement between this doctrine and the experience of a person, is ground of rational deduction. 2. நிகராப்பக்கம், ஒவ்வாதபக் கம், or விபக்கம், improper comparison, involving incongruity, absurdity, impossibility; thus for புறப்பக்கம், to say 'there is fire in water' is an absurdity in affairs of common life; for உட்பக்கம், to say that the basis of Siva's knowledge is மாயை, is an absurdity. In spiritual things the mental faculties, as well as the senses, are referred to மா யை, as their basis, and medium of acquiring knowledge. The சூக்கும body, the immediate source of consciousness, is referred to the same principle; and when the soul is liberated from births these are resolved into their original principles. பக்கத்திலேவாங்கிக்கொள்ளுதல். Borrowing in the neighborhood, or of others besides the persons in question. அவர்பக்கத்துக்காரியகாரன். He is his agent. எனக்குப்பக்கத்திலேஇரு. Sit be me. பக்கக்கிரகணம், s. Eclipse of the sun and moon, or the contrary, in succeeding changes of the moon. பக்கக்குடுமி, s. [loc. சிலுப்பா.] Men's hair-locks left growing over the ears, and tied behind. பக்கசூலை, s. A pain in the side, inflammation of the liver. See சூலை. பக்கச்செடில், s. A self torture, by running iron sticks, through the sides, See செடில். பக்கச்சொல், s. A word in one's favor. பக்கச்சொல்லாளி, s. A spokesman, a puffer, an advocate. பக்கத்துக்கிளி, s. [prov.] The one who passes in கிளித்தட்டு play. See கிளி. பக்கத்துணை, s. An aid, a companion, a supporter. பக்கத்தெலும்பு, s. A side-bone. பக்கபாதம், s. Partisanship, &c. See பட்சபாதம். பக்கப்பவுந்திரம், s. A fistula on either side of the privities. See பகந்திரம். பக்கப்பிளவை, s. A cancer or carbuncle in the side. பக்கவளை, s. A beam in the side of a bungalow or house, &c. See வளை. பக்கவாட்டு, s. That which is aside, or beside, as an irrelevant question, or subject. 2. Sidelong. பக்கவாதம், s. Partial or lateral palay. See வாதம். 2. As பக்கபாதம். பக்கவாயு, s. Sarcocele, with swelling in the side. பக்கவெட்டுப்போட, inf. To tickle one in the side. பக்கவேர், s. Side root of a tree, not shooting downward. 2)
