urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. Rules for making commentaries. There are five according to சதுரகராதி, viz.: 1. பதம். 2. பதப்பொருள். 3. வாக்கியம். 4. வினா. 5. விடை. உரையிற்கோடல், v. noun. Additions to a text by a commentator--one of the உத்தி. உரையெழுத, inf. To write a commentary. உரைவன்மை, s. Eloquence, oratorical power, சாதுரியப்பேச்சு. 2. ptm (p. 293) s. A proper temperament, temperature, consistency, degree of hardness or softness, quality or fitness, பக்குவம். (c.) 2. Boiled rice, சோறு. 3. Eating, உண்ணுகை. 4. A sacrificial grass, அறுகு. 5. Beauty, அழ கு. 6. Time, காலம். 7. An Indian hour of twenty-four minutes, நாழிகை. 8. (Beschi.) a kind of ode, சிந்து. மருந்தெண்ணைப்பதம், s. The stage when a medicinal oil is to be taken from the fire. 2. (fig.) Such a delicate state of the system as renders a person liable to disease from the least exposure. 3. (fig.) Excessive irritability of temper, extreme of sensibility.--Note. There are five degrees of inspissation: 1. குழம்புப்பதம், a thickened state; 2. கடுகுப்பதம், partial fluidity; 3. மந்தபதம், oily consistency; 4. மெழுகுபதம், waxy state; 5. முறுகுபதம், dryness. There are two states of heat in preparing oils, metals, &.c.: காயும்பதம், slight heat, for boiling the juices of plants; 2. வேல்பதம், full heat for melting gold, silver and other metals. பதக்கேடு, v. noun. Past the right stage, over-ripe, over-boiled, decayed, rotten. பதக்கேடானசரீரம். Debility of the system, often through age. பதத்துக்குக்காய்ச்ச--பதமாகக்காய்ச்ச, inf. To heat or boil medical oil, food, &c., to the proper degree. பதத்துக்குவடிக்க--பதத்தில்வடிக்க, inf. To strain a medical oil, &c., at the right stage of boiling. பதநீர், s. [com. பதனி.] Sweet toddy drawn in a pot lined with chunam To prevent fermentation. பதந்தப்ப, inf. To miss or pass the proper stage of boiling rice or medical oil, or in the ripening of fruits. 2. To pass the proper time for doing a thing. எகுபதந்தப்பிப்போயிற்று. The steel is not well tempered. பதபாகம், s. Gentleness, mildness, &c. பதப்பட, inf. [v. noun. பதப்பாடு.] To be seasoned, tempered, fitted, adapted, trained, பக்குவமாக. 2. To grow ripe, பழுக்க. பல்லுக்குப்பதப்பட்டது. It is adapted to the teeth--as well boiled for an old man, &c. பதப்படுத்த, inf. To season, temper, tan, mould, adapt, train. பதமழிவு, v. noun. Over-ripeness. See பதனழிவு. பதமறிய, inf. To know the right stage, temperature or consistency. பதமாயிருக்க, inf. To strain the water from boiled rice that it may be properly dry. பதமெடுக்க--பதம்பிடிக்க, inf. To hit on the right stage, as in boiling rice, oil, &c. பதம்பண்ண, inf. To season, to temper, to mould; to tan. பதம்பாட, inf. To compose a பதம் ode. பதம்பார்க்க, inf. To try the taste, consistency, &c., of boiling rice, to try a fruit, by feeling, smelling, or cutting. &c. 2. To hesitate and not enter on a business promptly. 2. [in burlesq.] To have misgivings, and doubts as to doing a thing for another. 4. To examine the moistness of land, &c., to ascertain its fitness for sowing. 14) *

Before a nasal பல் becomes பன், as பன்னுனி, the tip of a tooth. பல்லரணை--பல்லரனை, s. A kind of excrescence on the gums, gum-boil, ஓர் நோய். பல்லன், s. [fem. பல்லி.] A man with long or large teeth. பல்லிடுக்கு, s. Partings between the teeth, in reference to food sticking in them. பல்லுகட்ட--பற்கட்ட, inf. To fasten teeth [with gold] 2. To make and place [artificial] teeth. பல்லுகிட்டல்--பற்கிட்டல், v. noun. Chattering of the teeth from cold. 2 Closing together the jaws in convulsions; (lit.) approaching together of the teeth. பல்லுக்காட்ட--பல்லைக்காட்ட--பற்கா ட்ட, inf. To grin from meanness or want of good manners. 2. To cringe, beg meanly, ask pardon in a cringing manner. 3. To laugh irreverently. பல்லுக்குச்சி, s. As பற்குச்சி. பல்லுக்குத்த--பற்குத்த, inf. To ache in the teeth. 2. To pick the teeth. பல்லுக்குப்பதப்பட்டது, appel. n. Delicate food; also used in contempt. பல்லுக்கெஞ்ச--பல்லைக்கெஞ்ச, inf. As பல்லுக்காட்ட, 2. பல்லுக்கொழுக்கட்டை, s. A kind of pastry covered with roasted pulse or rice in imitation of teeth, made on the appearance of the child's first tooth. பல்லுக்கொறிக்க, inf. To grind the teeth together. பல்லுதிரஅடிக்க, inf. To strike out one's tooth or teeth by a blow. பல்லுத்தீட்ட--பல்லுத்தீற்ற, inf. To clean the teeth,தந்தசுத்திசெய்ய. 2. [prov.] To abuse one. பல்லுநோவு, s. The tooth-ache. பல்லுப்பட, inf. Supposed distress of the teeth of a snake or beast. See உளைவு. பல்லுவிளக்க, inf. To clean the teeth. பல்லூத்தை, s. Uncleanness of the teeth. பல்லையிளிக்க, inf. To show the teeth in grinning. பற்கடிக்க, inf. To gnash the teeth in grinning. பற்கடிக்க, inf. To gnash the teeth. பற்கறை, s. [improp. பக்கறை.] Tartar, or artificial blackness of the teeth. பற்காவி--பற்காறை, s. A kind of black ochre, or composition of betel, &c., used to strengthen and color the teeth. pẕku (p. 302) கிறேன், பழகினேன், வேன், பழக, v. n. To practise, to become initiated, to be used to, to be habituated; to be trained--as the voice in singing or speaking; the hand in working; the feet in walking, பயில. 2. To become acquainted with men or things, to be familiar with, உறவுசெய் ய. 3. To become fitted, tempered, seasoned, as a utensil, tool, or garment, பதப்பட. 4. To become broken or trained, as a beast, a bird, &c.; to be domesticated, சாதுவாக. 5. To be suited to one--as a house, the climate, a servant, இணக்கமாக. 6. To be customary, common, familiar, ஊடாட.
