ācaṉam (p. 36) s. A seat, any thing to sit on--whether a mat placed on the ground or a raised seat, பீடம். 2. A tiger's skin, a plat of sacrificial or other prescribed article on which the worshipper squats, or the more advanced devotee sits for the performance of his worship, புலித் தோன்முதலியவாசனம். 3. An alter on which sacrifices, oblations, &c. are offered, regarded as the seat of the divinity, பலிபீடம். 4. A throne, சிங்காசனம். 5. The fundament, posteriors, seat, பிட்டம். 6. [in Mathemat.] The complement of an arc or angle to 9, correlative of புசை, W. p. 25. KOTY, 6. [loc.] Back side or backyard of a house--as புறக்கோடி. கோடிகண்டால்விடுவாரோ. If he get a hint will he not find it out? கோடாகோடி, s. [com. கோடானகோடி.] A number--a hundred billions, பதுமம். 2. An immense, indefinite number, அளவின்மை. கோடிகாண்பிக்க, inf. [loc.] To touch slightly on a thing, to hint. கோடிக்கரை, s. Point Calimere. கோடிக்கல், s. A corner stone in a building. கோடிச்சா, s. [in Mathemat.] The cosine. கோடிசீமான்--கோடீஸ்வரன், s. A man of crores, one worth 1 millions of pagodas or rupees. கோடிதீர்த்தம், s. A sacred bathing place near Ramisseram. 2. A bathing place near Point Calimere. கோடிதூங்க, inf. [prov.] To be idle about another's house, to loiter about. கோடிதூங்கி, appel. n. A loiterer about other's houses. கோடிப்பாம்பு, s. [loc.] A full grown cobra snake. கோடியன், s. [prov.] The first and last in a set of palenkeen bearers. 2. The out side ox in a row going round a trading floor,--the inside one being called உள்ளான். 7)

niti (p. 277) s. Treasure, பொக்கசம். 2. Fulness, நிறைவு. 3. Gem, any of the nine terrestrial or of the feigned nine celestial gems of Kuvera. See மணி. 4. Pendent part of an ornament, ஆபரணத்றிற்றொங்கணி. 5. Gold, பொன். 6. (fig.) One abounding in, as குண நீதி, one endowed with all good qualities W. p. 468. NIDHI.--Note. The two species of gold of Swerga, regarded as possessing life, and yielding whatever in desired, are சங்கநிதி, gold in the form of a chank; பதுமநிதி, gold resembling a lotus. The nine gems of Swerga are: 1. பதுமம், lotus-like. 2. மகாபதுமம், major lotus-like; 3. சங்கம், chank-like; 4. மகரம், sword-fish-like; 5. கச்சபம், tortoise-like; 6. முகுந்தம், a gem resembling quicksilver; 7. நந்தம, the gem of felicity; 8. நீலம், blue lotus-like gem. நிதிக்கிழவன்--நிதிக்கோன்--நிதிபதி-நிதியோன், s. Brahma, as born of the lotus, பிரமன்; [ex யோனி, birth.] பதுமராகம், s. One of the nine precious stones, a ruby; செம்பு. 2. (R.) A hyacinth, ஓர்இரத்தினம்; [ex இராகம், color, redness.] பதுமரேகை, s. A peculiar and unfrequent kind of line in the palm of the hand, in the form of a lotus; considered a sign of greatness, கையிரேகைகளி லொன்று; [ex இரேகை, a line.] பதுமரோகம், s. I have not lately had the privilege of worshipping at your feet. பாதச்சாயை, s. The shadow under the foot, அடிநிழல். 2. See சாயை. பாததட்சணை, s. See பாதகாணிக்கை. பாததரிசனம், s. Interview with a great person, (lit.) sight of the feet, பததெரிச னம். பாததாடனம்--பாதப்பிரகாரம், s. (St.) Kicking with the foot, உதை. பாததாமரை--பாதாரவிந்தம், s. As பாத கமலம். பாததீட்சை, s. A high kind of தீட்சை, or species of illumination. See திருவடி தீட்சை. பாததீர்த்தம்--பாதோதகம், s. Water in which the feet of an idol or guru have been washed. See உதகம். பாததூளி, s. Dust of the feet, commonly of a great person. பாதத்திலேவிழ, inf. As பாதம்பணிய. பாதபங்கயம்--பாதபதுமம்--பாதபத் மம்--பாதபற்மம், s. Lotus-feet of a holy, or great personage. பாதபரிசம், s. Touching a superior's foot, திருவடிதீண்டுகை. 2. A kind of arsenic, சீதாங்கபாஷாணம். பாதபீடம்--பாதபீடிகை, s. footstool, as பாதாசனம். பாதபூசை, s. Worshipping with flowers, the feet of a Guru or other sacred person, as one of the rites of hospitality. பாதப்பிரகாரம், s. As பாததாடனம். பாதப்பிரட்சாளனம், s. Washing the feet, கால்கழுவுகை. See பிரட்சாளனம். பாதமயக்கு, s. verse capable of transposition; as அடிமயக்கு. (p.) பாதமுத்தி, s. Kissing the feet of a great person. 2. As சாயுச்சியம். பாதமுத்திரை, s. Sandals, &c., in which there is the print of a Guru's or other sacred person's foot; left with a disciple, in token of protection; and to be worshipped. பாதமூலம், s. The ball of the foot, குதிக்கால். W. p. 525. PADAMOOLA. பாதம்பணிய, inf. To prostrate at one's feet. பாதம்பாலிக்க, inf. To set the foot on the head of a prostrate worshipper, and bless him. பாதரட்சணம்--பாதரட்சை--பாதரக்ஷை, s. Shoes, slippers, clogs, or sandals, (lit.) defence, or safe guard for the feet,தொடு தோல். பாதவந்தனம், s. Homage, reverence, worship, at the feet of a great person. பாதாக்கிரம், s. The tip of the foot, end of the great toe, கானுனி; [ex அக்கிரம், point.] பாதாக்கிராந்தன், s. [pl. பாதாக்கிராந் தர்கள்.] A worshipper at the feet; an expectant, அடிவணங்குவோன். பாதாங்குட்டம், s. The guilt of brahmanicide as attaching to the soul and haunting the murderer. See under அத்தி. பிரமகத்திதோஷம்-பிரமகத்தியாதோஷம், s. Guilt of brahmanicide. பிரமகத்திதொலையல், v. noun. Terminating of the guilt of brahmanicide. பிரமகபாலம், s. The skull of the upper of fifth head of Brahma, plucked off by Siva, in the form of Bhairava, for pride; and worn by Siva as a part of his garland, or carried in his hand when begging, பிரமன்றலைஓடு. பிரமகற்பம், s. The age of Brahma. See கற்பம். பிரமகன்னிகை, s. A female of the Brahman caste, பிராமணப்பெண். 2. Sarasvati, சரஸ்வதி. பிரமகாதகன், s. Murderer of a brahman, பிராமணக்கொலைபாதகன். பிரமகாயத்திரி, s. The sacred incantation repeated by the brahmans, in their daily worship. See under காயத்திரி. பிரமகிரந்தி, s. Tying together, two stems of sacrificial grass in representation of the sexual union of Siva and Sakti, in the pujah or worship of the கிரி யைக்காரன், ஓர்முடிச்சு; [ex கிரந்தி, knot.] பிரமகுலம், s. The Brahman caste. பிரமகைவர்த்தம், s. One of the eighteen Puranas, in which the sun is regarded as the Supreme Being. See புராணம். (சது.) --The description in the Sans. Dict. is different. பிரமக்கியானம், s. As பிரமஞானம். பிரமக்கியானி, s. See பிரமஞானி. பிரமசடங்கம், s. Touching six members of the body, while repeating the five lettered incantation appropriated to the five faces of Siva, as representing the five operative dcities, ஆறங்கத்தோடு செய்யுஞ்செபம். பிரமசரியம்--பிரமசாரித்துவம், s. The order, condition or religious practice of the Brahmachari or religious unmarried student, நான்கு நிலையினொன்று. பிரமசரியமனுட்டிக்க, inf. To commence the practice of a religious student, commonly about the sixteenth year. பிரமசாபாலம், s. One of the thirty-two Upanishads, உபநிடதமுப்பத்திரண்டினொன்று. பிரமசாரி, s. The religious bachelorstudent, the first of the four orders prescribed for the brahmanical tribe. See ஆச்சிரமம். 2. Bishma, a son of king சந்தனு. பிரமசாரிசந்நியாசி, s. One who passes from the student to the ascetic or fourth order, without passing through the intermediate stages, பிரமசரியத்தினின்றுஞ்சன் னியாசியாச்சிரமத்திற்புகுந்தோன். பிரமசித்தி, s. Success, in acquiring a knowledge of the deity. பிரமசூத்திரம், s. A thread or cord consisting of three threads worn by brahmans, புரிநூல். 2. The name of a treatise, ஓர்நூல். பிரமசைதன்னியம், s. The original or first cause, God, கடவுள். பிரமஞானம், s. Experimental knowledge of the deity. 2. Regarding every thing as god. பிரமஞானி, s. One who has made great attainments in the knowledge of God, so as to become one with Him, பரமஞானி. பிரமதண்டம், s. A stick to support the chin, used by brahmans, in meditation. பிரமதண்டு, s. A stick used by devotees or yogis, யோகதண்டம். 2. See பிரமம், giddiness. பிரமதத்துவம், s. True knowledge of the Supreme deity, மெய்ஞ்ஞானம். பிரமதாயம், s. What is allowed to brahmans, or held free by them. பிரமதானம்--பிரமஸ்தானம், s. The inmost recess in a temple where the chief idol is placed, as கர்ப்பக்கிரகம். பிரமதேவன், s. The god Brahma, the Creator or Evolver of worlds. பிரமத்துவம், s. The divine nature, கட வுட்டன்மை. பிரமநிருவாணம், s. Union with the deity, கடவுளுடனொன்றுகை. பிரமபதம்--பிரமபதவி, s. The world of Brahma, an inferior state of bliss. பிரமபுத்திரம், s. The river, Brahmaputra, ஓர்நதி. பிரமபுத்திரி, s. The Sarasvati river, சரஸ்வதியாறு. 2. The goddess Sarasvati, சரஸ்வதி. பிரமபுரம், s. Seehali, a town in Southern India on the northern bank of the Cavery, சீகாழி. பிரமபுராணம், s. Puranas which teach that Brahma is the chief deity. In the celebrated eighteen there are two of this class. the பிரமம், and the பதுமம். (சது.) பிரமப்பிரளயம், s. The deluge at the end of the life of Brahma, பிரமனாயுள்முடி வில்வரும்பிரளயம். பிரமமணம், s. One of the eight modes of marriage. See மணம். பிரமமுனி--பிரமரிஷி, s. A Rishi of the Brahman caste, as most of them are. பிரமமூலி, s. A medicinal plant. See பிரமி. பிரமயாகம், s. One of the five யாகம், எச்சமைந்தினொன்று. பிரமயோனி, s. The birth, origin, or extraction of a brahman, பிராமணப்பிறப்பு. பிரமரட்சு, s. A savage man of a monstrous size, பருத்தமுருடன். பிரமரந்திரம், s. The tender part of the crown of the head where the bone is not formed in infancy, and through which it is said the soul of a yogi departs when he chooses to die, உச்சித்துவாரம். பிரமராட்சதன், s. A goblin or savage animated by the soul of a brahman, who in a former birth died with unexpiated sin. பிரமராட்சதி-பிரமராட்சதை, s. The ghost of a brahmani who having died a violent death appears in the form of a demon, inhabiting trees and possessing all the knowledge previously obtained, பார்ப் பாரப்பெண்பேய். பிரமலிபி, s. The writing of Brahma in the forehead of all persons before birth; fate, destiny. See தலைஎழுத்து. பிரமலிபிதப்பாது. The writing of Brahma will not fail. பிரமலோகம், s. The world and heaven of Brahma, being the seventh and highest of the seven upper worlds, also called சத்தியலோகம். (சது.) பிரமவமிசம், s. Lineage in succession from Brahma. 2. The race of brahmans, பிராமணசாதி. பிரமவாதம், s. The religious tenets of the Vedas considered systematically, வேதமதம். பிரமவித்து, s. One of the four grades of those who pursue a true and perfect knowledge of the deity, நால்வகைமுத்தரி லொருவன். பிரமவிந்து--பிரமபிந்து. s. The seed, or progeny of a brahman, &c., பிராமணவிந்து. 2. One of the thirty-two Upanishads. See உபநிடதம். பிரமனாள், s. The fourth lunar asterism, உரோகிணி. (சது.) பிரமன்--பிரமா, s. Brahma of the Triad, as creator, progenitor or evolver of worlds and creatures, நான்முகன். பிரமன்--பிரமா, s. Brahma of the Triad, as creator, progenitor or evolver of worlds and creatures, நான்முகன். பிரமன்றந்தை, s. Vishnu as father of Brahma, விஷ்ணு. பிரமாஞ்சலி, s. A form of worship in which the two hands are joined, and placed at the breast. பிரமாட்சரம், s. A letter which is the origin of all letters, and the prime root of all prayers and incantations, மூலவெ ழுத்து. பிரமாண்டம், s. The system of worlds, as created by Brahma, உலகம். 2. One of the eighteen Puranas, பதினெண்புரா ணத்தொன்று. 3. [fig.] That which is large, gigantic, huge, colossal, காத்திரம். (usage.) பிரமாண்டநாயகன், s. Lord of the universe, கடவுள். 2. An epithet used in praise, or compliment, சக்கரவர்த்தி. பிரமாத்திரம்--பிரமாஸ்திரம், s. A famous arrow of supernatural qualities, given by Brahma to some, who had practised extraordinary austerities. பிரமாந்தரம், s. Certain parts of the body regarded as stations of the soul, உயிர்நிலை. பிரமாயு, s. The age of Brahma, as பிர மகற்பம்; [ex ஆயு.] பிரமாயுதம், s. A number, one million, பத்திலட்சம். (சது.) பிரமாரண்ணியம், s. The name of a town called வேதாரண்ணியம். பிரமாலயம், s. The house of a brahman. பிரமானந்தம், s. Heavenly bliss, or felicity, as பரமானந்தம். பிரமோத்தரகாண்டம், s. The last section of chapter of the Brahma Purana, added by the Saivas concerning Gokarnam, பிரமபுராணத்துக்கடைக்காண்டம். பிரமோற்சவம், s. An annual grand festival at a pagoda. 3) *
புராணம்
purāṇam (p. 325) s. Antiquity, பழமை. 2. Ancient story; a purana, a legendary tale containing accounts of gods, heroes, Rishis, &c., பழங்கதை. (c.) புராணம், 18. The eighteen principal puranas are; 1. சைவம், Saiva. 2. காந்தம், Skanda; 3. இலிங்கம், Linga; 4. கூர்மம், Kurma; 5. வாமனம், Vamana; 6. வராகம், Varaka; 7. பௌடிகம் or பவிஷியம், Bhavishyat or prophetic; 8. மச்சியம், Matsya; 9. மார்க்கண்டேயம், Markandeya; 1. பிர மாண்டம், Bra'hmanda or egg of Brahma. According to சதுரகராதி, these are Saiva puranas. 11. நாரதீயம், Naradiya; 12. பாகவதம்; Bagavat, describing the ten incarnations of Vishnu; 13. காரூடம், Garuda; 14. வைணவம், Vaishnava. These four are Vaishnava puranas. 15. பிரமம், Brahma; 16. பதுமம், Patma or the lotus. These two are Brahma puranas. 17. பிரமகைவர்த்தம்; Brahmakaivarta, or transformations of Brahma or Krishna; purana of the sun. 18. ஆக்கினேயம், Agneya, of the god of fire.--Note. The above were all written in Sanscrit and but few of them are yet translated into Tamil. There are also eighteen secondaries, called உபபுராணம், and many of an inferior order, called ஸ்தலபுராணம், written in praise of sacred places. புராணங்கேட்க, inf. To hear the puranas read. See கேள், v. புராணவைராக்கியம், s. Zeal for the puranas. புராணீகன், s. [also பௌராணிகன்.] One well versed in the puranas, &c., புராணந்தேர்ந்தோன். 2. The author of a purana, புராணஞ்செய்தோன். 4) *

makā (p. 338) adj. Great, high, exalted, dignified, noble, honorable, பெருமையான. 2. Immense, prodigious, stupendous, monstrous, extreme, அளவற்ற. 3. Superior, greater, paramount, superlative, உயர்ந்த. 4. Intense, மிகுந்த.--Note. This particle is sometimes repeated to express intensity, as மகாமகாப் பட்ட, the greatest. (Beschi.) Also sometimes contracted to மக, and மா, as மகராசா, மாசனங்கள்; [ex மகத்து.] அதுமகாஅரிது. It is very difficult. அதுமகாஅபூர்வம். It is very rare. மகராசன், s. A king, அரசன். 2. A rich or great or good man, சீமான். மகராசா, s. The king, the sovereign. மகராசி, s. A rich or benevolent lady; (lit.) a queen. மகரிஷி, s. An exalted Rishi, மகாரிஷி. மகாஅவதானி, s. A person who has excellent memory. மகாகருவம்--மகாகர்வம், s. Much arrogance. 2. Ten billions. மகாகற்பம், s. The great Kalpa, consisting of a vast period, probably the life time of Bramha, or 155,52,,, solar years, after which there will be a universal destruction.--Note. By analogy it would be only 1 கற்பம் of 4,32,, each or 43,2,, years; but கற்பம் is used very indefinitely. மகாகாசம்--மகாகாயம், s. The air, or ether at large; as distinguished from கடாகாசம், or air in a pot, the atmosphere, பெருவெளி. மகாகாலம், s. A great and long period of time, sometimes used for eternity, நெடுங்காலம். மகாகிதி--மகாக்ஷிதி, s. A certain number, one thousand trillions. மகாகோணி--மகாக்ஷோணி, s. Ten trillions. மகாகோரம், s. A division of hell, or Tartarus, நரகத்தினோரிடம். மகாசகை, s. A plant bearing an unfading flower, Gomphr&oe;na globosa, வாடா மல்லிகை. W. p. 652. MAHASAHA. மகாசங்கம், s. A hundred billions. 2. It is of five kinds; 1. பிரமம், or வேதமோதல், reading and learning Vedas; 2. தெய்வம், or ஓமம்வ ளர்த்தல், kindling a sacrificial fire; 3. பூதம், or பலியீதல், fragments of food left at an oblation; 4. பிதிர், or தர்ப்பணமுடித் தல், presenting water to the manes of persons deceased; 5. மானுடம், or இரப் போர்க்குணவீதல், gifts to beggars. மகாயுகம், s. [in astron.] The moment of the sun's entering Aries, the vernal equinox, but varying several days from the European computation, மேடத்திற்சூரி யன்வருகை. W. p. 651. MAHAVISHUVA. மகாவியாகிருதி, s. The three mystical words, Bhur, Bhuva and Swer, the essential part with ஓம், of the Gayatri of the Brahmans, in their daily incantations, காயத்திரிமந்திரம். மகாவிந்தம், s. The rising of the sun and moon in conjunction, on a Monday, the sun being in Capricorn, in the month of January, and the moon in the twenty-second lunar asterism, in the seventh யோகம்--regarded as a most auspicious moment for sacred bathing; such is called மகோதயதீர்த்தம்.
