aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. A charitable man. 2. A sage, an anchorite. 3. A Brahman. 4. Argha. இல்லறம், s. Domestic life. துறவறம், s. Religious or ascetic life. ஈரறம், s. The two species of life above-mentioned. 47)

ōṭu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓடினேன், வேன், ஓட, v. n. To run, flee, flee away, pass quickly, விரைந்துசெல்ல. 2. [used with the impers. terminations.] To grow long, extend, be long, go far, நீள. 3. To divide, split, crack, வெடிக்க. ஓடவுமாட்டான் பிடியுங்கொடான். He will neither run, nor suffer himself to be caught. அவனுக்குஎழுத்துநடையோடாது. He cannot read freely. ஊரோடுகையிலொக்கவோடு. Run when your fellow-countrymen do; i. e. do as others do. வேரோடுகிறது. The root runs (into the ground). கப்பலோடுகிறது. The ship is sailing, is under sail. ஓடவைத்தல், v. noun. Refining metals, புடம்வைத்தல். இழிவினோடொன்றிநின்றவாடகத்தையோடவைக் குமாறுபோல். As refining gold spoiled by mixture with the same metal of inferior quality. (பார.) ஓடவைத்தபொன், s. Refined gold. ஓடாணி, s. [in jewelry.] A pin or bolt passed into an ornament as a fastening, ஆபரணக்கடைப்பூட்டு. ஓடித்திரிய, inf. To run about. 2. To assume airs. 3. To take great pains, &c., to attain an object. ஓடிப்படர, inf. To run and spread as a creeper. ஓடிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To overtake in running. ஓடிப்போக, inf. To run away. ஓடியாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To go about, to endeavor. அவன்ஒருஉத்தியோகத்திற்கோடியாடிப்பார்க்கிறா ன். He goes about in pursuit of a situation. ஓடியுறைய, inf. To congeal gradually, இறுக--chiefly used in the past. கஷாயமெல்லாமோடியுறைந்தது. The decoction is all congealed. ஓடிவர, inf. To approach at a running pace. ஓடிவிறைக்க, inf. To extend--as stiffness over the body through cold, முழுதும்விறைக்க. ஓடிவெளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To be dispelled--as clouds; to clear--as the sky, முகில்பரந்தொழிய. 2. To be discovered--as fraud, theft, &c., களவுவெளிப்பட. அவர்வஞ்சகமெல்லாமோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. He has discovered the imposition, &c. மழையோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. The appearance of rain is past away, the sky is become clear. ஓடுதாவடி, s. Bustle and confusion in preparing--as for a journey, &c., going abroad--as for business, &c., in a time of bustle, &c., கலக்கம். ஓடுதாவடிப்படுதல், v. noun. Being in a bustle--as in preparing for a journey, &c. ஓடுபந்தல், s. [prov.] A moveable canopy supported on cords, &c., நடைக் காவணம். ஓடுவிப்புருதி, s. A running cancer, ஓர்புண். ஓட்டம், v. noun. Running, flight, galloping, speeding, ஓடுமோட்டம். 2. Current, flowing, course, pace, drift, நீரோட் டம். 3. Defeat, rout, retreat, flight, தோல்வி. அங்கேநானெடுத்தஓட்டமிங்கேவந்தோய்ந்தது... I ran all the way hither. அவனுக்கெழுத்தோட்டமில்லை. He does not read fluently. ஓரோட்டமாய்வா. Come at once, come without halting, do not stay on the way. ஓட்டங்காட்ட, inf. To lead the way, to precede inducing others to follow. ஓட்டமாகவோட, inf. To run with great speed. ஓட்டமெடுக்க-ஓட்டம்பிடிக்க, inf. To publish the banns of marriage. கலியாணசம்பிரமம், s. Nuptial pomp. கலியாணச்சடங்கு, s. The celebration of a marriage ceremony, or the putting on of ear-rings by a young man. கலியாணஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To bid or invite to a wedding. கலியாணப்பந்தல், s. A temporary shed lined with cloth for marriage guests. கலியாணப்புத்தகம், s. A district marriage register. கலியாணப்பூ, s. [prov.] The most plentiful fall of the flowers of the இருப் பை tree which occurs during the season. கலியாணப்பொருத்தம், s. The contract of betrothing in which the parties or their friends bind themselves under penalty to consummate the marriage. கலியாணமண்டபம், s. A hall for a splendid marriage ceremony. கலியாணமுடிக்க, inf. To marry. கலியாணமெழுத, inf. [prov.] To register a marriage. கலியாணம்பண்ண, inf. To marry, solemnize a wedding. 2. [prov.] To celebrate the festivity of a girl's arriving at puberty, or of a young man's putting on ear-ornaments. 3. To make a feast for the sake of obtaining presents from the guests--done in case of reduced or involved circumstances. கலியாணவாழ்த்து, s. Nuptial congratulation. கலியாணவீடு, s. A wedding house. 2. A house in which a கலியாணம் festival is being celebrated. கலியாணவோமம், s. The sacred fire kindled at a wedding, sacred to the god of fire who is invoked as a witness to the transaction. பஞ்சகலியாணி, s. A horse, whose four feet and forehead are white. நித்தியகலியாணன், s. To appear or gush out, as water in a newly dug well. தண்ணீர்குடித்தபாடம்--தண்ணீர்ப்பா டம், s. An expression used to denote intimate acquaintance. 2. A lesson well learnt. 3. A science well mastered. A man who draws or brings water. தண்ணீர்க்கால், s. A water-course, a channel for water. தண்ணீர்தெளிக்க, inf. To sprinkle water for the purification of sheep, for sacrifice. 2. (fig.) To give one over to his own way. நான்அவனைத்தண்ணீர்தெளித்துவிட்டுவிட்டேன். I have left him to himself. தண்ணீர்த்தவனம்--தண்ணீர்விடாய், s. Thirst. தண்ணீர்த்துறை, s. The entrance to a tank, river, &c., where men or cattle go for water. தண்ணீர்பட்டபாடு, v. noun. Like water; i. e. profuse, plentiful, free. (c.) தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல்--தண்ணீர்ச்சாலை, s. A shed where water, butter-milk, lemonade, &c., are furnished. தண்ணீர்ப்பிடி--தண்ணீர்ப்பிடிப்பு, v. noun. Being watery as food or fruits. 2. Containing water, as pustules. 3. Being suffused with watery humors, as the body. 4. The limit of the water in a tank. See சீர்ப்பிடி. தண்ணீர்ச்சாரை, s. A kind of ratsnake living in tanks, as நீர்ச்சாரை. தண்ணீர்ப்பகை, s. To give water to travellers from a water shed. 2. To pour water for a low caste person to drink, who is not allowed to touch the cup. தலைக்குத்தண்ணீர்வார்த்தல். Bathing a girl with appropriate ceremonies, on her becoming marriageable; done by aged matrons, not widows, who are not allowed to be present. தண்ணீரொத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To agree with one's constitution, as water. (c.) தண்ணீரோத--தண்ணீர்மந்திரிக்க, inf. To consecrate, or enchant water to be given to a woman in labor, &c., to dispel the effects of the evil eye, &c. தண்ணீர்விட்டான், appel. n. A kind of plant, a linear leaved shrub, Asparagus racemosus. (Willd.) தண்ணீர்விட்டான்கிழங்கு, s. The root of the above, containing cool water. 50) *

The fourth lunar mansion, உரோகிணி. --There are different kinds of care as எடுப் புத்தேர், a car borne on the shoulders; கட் டுத்தேர், temporary car; இழுப்புத்தேர், சக்க ரத்தேர், a wheeled car; கிண்ணித்தேர், a car ornamented with brass; செய்கைத்தேர், a car for processions; நிலைத்தேர், a fixed car. தேரடி, s. The place where the idolcar is kept, தேர்முட்டி. (c.) தேராள்--தேரோன், s. A chariot-warrior, இரதவீரன். தேரிடக்கியம், s. A flag or benner in a car. See இடக்கியம். தேரிழுக்க, inf. To draw the car at a festival. தேருட்பரப்பு--தேர்ச்சார்பலகை, s. Place in the car for the seat of the idol. தேருருளை--தேருருள்--தேர்க்கால், s. Wheel of a car or chariot. தேருமச்சி, s. A kind of snail with a turbinated shell. See ஊமச்சி. தேரெழுத்தாணி, s. A style shaped at top like a car or tower. See எழுத்தாணி. தேரோட, inf. To run or be drawn, as a car. தேரோடிநிலையிலேநின்றது. The car has run and stopped in its place; i. e. a prosperous course has come to an end. தேரோடும்வீதி, s. The outer road around a temple along which the car is drawn. தேரோட்டம், v. noun. [prov. தேரோட் டு.] The running or drawing of a car, especially at the temple festival. 2. The moving of a chariot. 3. (R.) Defeat of charioteers in war. தேரோட்டுவோர், appel. n. See தேர்க் கொற்றர். தேர்க்கவி, s. A kind of poem so constructed as to be written in the form of a car, இரதபந்தம். தேர்க்காரன், s. Charioteer, சாரதி. தேர்க்குடம், s. Brass knobs in the form of inverted pots, as ornaments to a car. தேர்க்கூம்பு--தேர்மொட்டு, s. Pinnacle of a car. தேர்க்கொடி, s. Pennon or streamer of a car. தேர்க்கொடுங்கை, s. The outside arches of a car, binding it together. (c.) தேர்க்கொற்றர், s. (plu.) Car-drawers, enjoing immunities from the state as a recompense for their services, தே ரோட்டுவோர். தேர்ச்சக்கரம்--தேர்ச்சில்--தேர்ச்சில்லு, s. A wheel of a car of chariot. தேர்ச்சார்பலகை, s. See தேருட்பரப்பு. தேர்ச்சீலை, s. Bright colored clothes with which the idol-car is ornamented. தேர்ச்சுவடு--தேர்த்தடம், s. The track of a car. தேர்த்தட்டு, s. Middle loft of a car, as தேர்ச்சார்பலகை. தேர்த்தானை, s. The chariot-force of an army; also தேர்ச்சேனை. 2. As தேர்ச் சீலை. தேர்த்திருநாள், s. A festival when a temple-car is drawn, தேர்த்திருவிழா. (c.) தேர்த்துகள், s. Dust rising from a car in motion. 2. A measure of length, being the eighth part of a பஞ்சிற்றுகள், and equal to eight கதிரெழுதுகள். தேர்நிலை, s. Stopping place of a car, as தேர்முட்டி. தேர்ப்பந்தல், s. An ornamental shed in the form of a car. தேர்ப்பாகன், s. A car-driver, a charioteer, சாரதி. 2. The planet Mercury, புதன். தேர்ப்பார், s. [prov.] The floor of a car on which the idol is placed, இரதப்பார். தேர்முட்டி, s. A building in which the car is kept, தேர்விடுமிடம், (c.) தேர்மொட்டு, s. See தேர்க்கூம்பு. தேர்வடம், s. Cable with which a car is drawn. (c.) ஓராழித்தேரோன், appel. n. The sun, as having a car of one wheel. (p.) 14)

pntl (p. 294) s. A booth, a temporary shed, காவணம். 2. A bower, any frame for running flowers, or a spreading vine, கொடிப டர்பந்தல். (c.) பந்தல்சோடினை, s. Decoration, ornaments, &c., of a festive shed. பந்தல்போட, inf. To make a பந்தல் for a festive occasion, &c. நாலுகாலுண்டானாலொருபந்தல்போடலாம்..... When there are four posts, a booth can be made. பந்தற்கால், s. The posts of a shed. பந்தற்கால்நாட்டுதல், v. noun. Fixing the pole of a booth. A woman's cloth with flowers printed, or wrought, throughout. பூச்சொக்கா, s. A long jacket of fine flowered muslin. பூச்சட்டி--பூஞ்சட்டி, s. A flower-pot. பூஞ்சணற்பு, s. A thrifty kind of Indian hemp. பூஞ்சாட்டி, s. See சாட்டி. பூஞ்சாயம், s. Ruddy, dark color. பூஞ்சிட்டு, s. A kind of little bird. See சிட்டு. பூஞ்சுண்ணம், s. Farina of flowers, as பூந்தாது. பூஞ்சிறகு, s. Down of young birds. பூத்தட்டுதல், v. noun. Reducing melted wax to flakes by pouring it into water, in the process of whitening it, மெ ழுகைத்தகடாக்கல். (Jaff.) பூத்திரி--பூவர்த்தி, s. A kind of fireworks or rocket, held in the hand while discharged, from which flowers drop, ஓர்வகைவாணம். பூத்தொடுக்க, inf. To string flowers, commonly by tying them together, in making garlands. 2. [fig.] To put up things very loosely so as to make an appearance of bulkiness. 3. A flower-garland. பூமிசைநடந்தோன்--புஷ்பத்தின்மேல் நடந்தோன், appel. n. Argha. 2. Buddha. பூமுறிக்க, inf. To break the plantain blossom, that the fruit may grow larger. பூமுறை, s. The season of flowering, in a tree, &c., பூக்காலம். பூமொட்டு, s. A flower-bud. பூம்பட்டாடை, s. A fine silk-vestment. பூம்பட்டு, s. Fine soft silk. பூம்பந்து, s. [com. பூப்பந்து.] A ball of flowers. பூம்பனை, s. The male paln yra, which yields nothing but flowers, ஆண்பனை. பூம்பாளை, s. Tender spatha. பூம்பிஞ்சு, s. [com. பூப்பிஞ்சு.] Young fruit resembling a flower. பூம்பிடா, s. A flower basket, as பூக் குடலை. (Jaff.) பூம்புகை, s. Smelling smoke, as நறும் புகை. பூராசி, s. An abundance of flowers. பூவணை--பூவமளி, s. A bed or a cot on which flowers are thickly spread for a nuptial couch, as one of the eight sensual enjoyments. See போகம். பூவந்தி, s. [com. பூந்தி.] The நெய்க் கொட்டான் tree, notch-leaved soap-nut, Sapindus emarginatus. (Ains.) பூவம்பன், s. Kama as armed with flowers as his arrows, காமன்; [ex அம்பு.] பூவரசு, s. The portia or tulip tree. See அரசு. பூவாணம், s. A kind of rocket, that throws out flowers. பூவாழை, s. A plant, Canna Indica. (R.) பூவாளி, s. Kama, the Hindu cupid, மன்மதன். 2. One of the arrows of Kama, மன்மதபாணம்; [ex வாளி, arrow.] பூவிதழ், s. Flower-petals, மலரேடு. பூவில், s. The bow of Kama as adorned with flowers, மன்மதன்வில். பூவிழுதல், also பூவுதிர்தல், v. n. mṇm (p. 341) s. Nuptials, marriage, wedding, wedlock, கலியாணம். (சது.) 2. [fig.] Better circumstances, நலம். அஷ்டமணம். Eight kinds of marriage: 1. பிரமம், marriage of a virgin to a bachelor; 2. பிரசாபத்தியம், marriage by mutual consent of the relations; the girl having been solicited by the friends of the bridegroom; 3. ஆரிடம், the gift of a girl in marriage; her relations receiving as a present one or two cows, or bullocks; or according to some, the girl is placed between a cow and a bullock with gilded horns and hoofs, and the ceremony is comfirmed by the pouring of water; 4. தெய்வம், marriage of a girl bestowed by a deity in recompense for a sacrifice offered by her father; or, as some say, marriage in the presence of a sacrifice.--Note. These four are performed before the god of fire, as a witness; 5. காந்தருவம், marriage by the mutual consent of the individuals themselves; without consulting friends, or having a marriage ceremony; 6. ஆசுரம், marriage in which the bridegroom furnishes the bride with jewels, and pays her friends the sum which they demand for her.--Note. Some authorities mention certain heroic or athletic explcits as the price to be paid. 7. இராக்கதம், marriage in which the girl is taken by force, without her own consent or that of her friends; 8. பைசாசம், marriage in which a girl is forced when asleep, or in a state of insensibility. மணமும்பிணமும் போகிறவீதியிலிருந்துபேசுகி றேன். I assert it in a street where weddings and funerals pass; a strong asseveration. மணக்கோலம், s. Marriage-attire or costume. 2. See கோலம். மணப்பந்தல், s. A marriage-shed erected and adorned for the wedding. மணப்பறை, s. Drumming at a marriage--oppos. to பிணப்பறை. மணப்பொருத்தம், s. A marriage-contract, a written agreement between the parties marrying; or their parents, on giving their children in marriage. 2. See தசப்பொருத்தம். மணமகன், s. A bridegroom, மணவா ளன். 2. (சது.) A husband, புருஷன். மணமகள், s. A bride, மணவாளி. 2. A wife, மனைவி. மணம்புரிய, inf. To marry. மணவணி, s. Wedding ornaments or decorations; [ex அணி.] (p.) மணவறை, s.
