இசை
icai (p. 45) s. A sound, noise, ஒலி. 2. Praise, புகழ். 3. A word, சொல். 4. A tune, melody, மிடற்றாற்பிறக்குமிசை. 5. Instrumental music, நரம்பிற்பிறக்குமிசை. 6. Sound, harmony in music, a harmonious or musical sound, tone, note, &c., இசைப்பாட்டு. Also a term common to the different parts in music. (p.) (சது.)--The seven principal sounds or notes in the vocal and instrumental music of the Hindus are called, சுரம், in singing, and நரம்பு, on stringed instruments; they are, 1. குரல், the guttural sound, the sound coming from the throat, மிடற்றாற்குரல். 2. துத்தம், the second tone of the gamut, or நி modulated by the tongue, நாவினாற்றுத்தம். 3. கைக்கிளை, the sound caused by the palate, அண்ணத்தாற்கைக்கிளை. 4. உழை, the cerebral, or the sound coming from the head, சிரத்தாலுழை. 5. இளி, that which proceeds from the forehead, நெற்றியாலிளி. 6. விளரி, the pectoral, or that which proceeds from the breast, நெஞ்சால்விளரி. 7. தாரம், that from the nose, or nasal, மூக் காற்றாரம்.--These sounds, they compare: 1. With those of animals--as that of a peacock, a bull, a sheep, &c. 2. With the different tastes of milk, honey, &c. 3. With the different scents of jasmin, nymph&oe;a, &c.--The letters (அட்சரம்.) by which they express these notes are as follow: 1. ஆஅ. 2. ஈஇ. 3. ஊஉ. 4. ஏஎ. 5. ஐஇ. 6. ஓஒ. 7. ஔஉ.--The time or measure, (மாத்திரை,) of these notes is as follows:The 1st note குரல் contains 4 measures நான்கு குரல். 2d துத்தம் contains 4 measures நான்குதுத்தம். 3d கைக்கிளை ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுகைக்கிளை. 4th உழை ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுழை. 5th இளி ,, 4 ,, நான்கிளி. 6th விளரி ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுவிளரி. 7th தாரம் ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுதாரம். From the combinations of these notes or sounds, are formed seven different kinds of airs or tunes; (பாலை) viz.: 1. செம்பாலை, or the air in which the first note is doubled, குரலேகுரல். 2. படுமலைப் பாலை, the air in which the second and first notes are compounded, துத்தமேகுரல். 3. செவ்வழிப்பாலை, the air in which the third and the first notes are compounded, கைக்கிளையேகுரல். 4. அரும்பாலை, the air in which the fourth and the first notes are compounded, உழையேகுரல். 5. கொடி ப்பாலை, the air in which the fifth and first notes are compounded, இளியேகுரல். 6. விளரிப்பாலை, the air in which the sixth and first notes are compouned, விளரியே குரல். 7. மேற்செம்பாலை, the air in which the seventh and first notes are compounded, தாரமேகுரல்.--The differences of these tunes are as follow; viz.: 1. கொ டிப்பாலை, a tune higher than செம்பாலை. 2. விளரிப்பாலை and மேற்செம்பாலை, tunes higher than கொடிச்செம்பாலை.--The three different parts in music are: 1. மந்தவிசை, bass, or the lowest pitch--also called, மந்தரம் or காகுளி. 2. மத்திமலிசை, tenor or medium--also called, மதுரம் or சமன். 3. தாரவிசை, treble or the highest pitch-also called, உச்சம் or வல்லிசை.--The different parts are not sung together, but one after another in succession--மந்த விசை, takes its pitch in the key note of the bass--the மத்திமவிசை, in the fifth-and the உச்சம், in the octave. The term is also applied to the several notes or sounds of the octave--also called சுரம்-as the first சுரம், the second சுரம், &c., and the whole are called the சரளி or gamut. இசைகேடு, s. Dissonance, discord, want of harmony, சுரபேதம். 2. Dishonor, disgrace, ill-fame, அவகீர்த்தி. 3. Want of opportunity, inconvenience, inauspiciousness--as of a day, ஒத்துக்கொள் ளாமை. 4. [prov.] Reduced state, emaciated state, இடைந்துபோனநிலைமை. இசைகொள்ள, inf. To be renowned, கீர்த்திபெற. இசைக்குழல், s. A musical windinstrument, ஊதுகுழல். இசைத்தமிழ், s. One of the three kinds of Tamil odes, or other poetry adapted to song--also the various changes made to accommodate language to music, முத்தமிழினொன்று. இசைத்திரிபு, s. A change of tune by mistake, ஓசைப்பிறழ்வு. 2. Variation in music, இசைமாறுகை. 3. A different enunciation of the same terms, according to the different senses they are intended to convey, இசையறுத்துக்கூறுகை-as செம்பொன்பதின்கழஞ்சு, may be செம்பு ஒன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the copper is nine கழஞ்சு--or செம்பொன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the fine gold is ten கழஞ்சு. So குறும்பரம்பு may be குறும்பர் அம்பு, the army of territorial chiefs-or குறும் பரம்பு, a short board used for smoothing ploughed fields. இசைநாள், s. The twenty-fifth, also the twenty-sixth lunar mansions, பூரட்டாதி and உத்திரட்டாதி. இசைநிறை, s. [in poetry.] The use of a letter, or word to fill the measure-an expletive, ஓரிடைச்சொல்; as ஏஎ யிவ ளொருத்திபேடி. Heh! This is a hermaphrodite. இசைநூல், s. The science of music. இசைப்பாட்டு, s. A melody, tune, song, காந்தாரம். இசைமடந்தை, s. Sarasvati, the wife of Brahma; the goddess of speech, of music, fame, praise, &c., சரச்சுவதி. (p.) இசையுள்ளான், s. A man of fame or praise. இசையெச்சம், s. [in grammar.] Ellipsis or omission of a word, சொல் லெச்சம். இசையெடுக்க, inf. To pitch or begin a tune. இசைவல்லோர்--இசைவாணர். s. Proficients in music, சங்கீதபாடகர். 2. Heavenly choristers, கந்தருவர். 39)

kaṭikai (p. 87) s. An Indian hour of twenty-four minutes, நாழிகை. Wils. p. 37. GHADIKA. கடிகாரம்--கடியாரம், s. A watch, clock, dial, நாழிகையறியுங்கருவி. கடியாரக்காரன், s. A watch-maker. கடியாரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To tell the hour. கடிகைமாக்கள், s. Panegyrists who pass before and after a prince pronouncing his titles and singing verses to his honor, மங்கலப்பாடகர். கடிகைவெண்பா, s. A poem in thirty-two நேரிசைவெண்பா, in which the poet sings the actions of gods and kings, which are said to be fulfilled in the space of an Indian hour, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். 51)

kvi (p. 98) s. Planet venus, சுக்கிரன். 2. A poet, a versifier, புலவன். Wils, p. 24. KAVI. 3. An ape, a monkey, குரங்கு. 4. A plant, பூனைக்காலி. 5. One of the four classes of poets, நாற்கவி. (See புலமையோர்.) 6. Poetry, verse, a stanza, பாட்டு. (p.) Poetry is of four kinds, viz.: 1. ஆசுகவி, an extemporaneous poem made by request, the theme, the kind of verse and some of the rhetorical figures to be wrought into it being given. 2. மதுரகவி, a poem in which sublime and gratifying ideas are couched in rich language, with varied appropriate rhymes and rhetorical figures, and all in a sweet flowing style. 3. சித்திரகவி, a poem variously of artfully composed. (See மிறைக் கவி.) 4. வித்தாரகவி, an extended poem, such as the great epics Ramayana and Bharata.--Note. Each of these four is also applied to the poet as well as to the poem. கவிகட்ட--கவிபாட inf. To make verses. கவிகற்றோர், s. Panegyrists attending a prince in his movements, மங்க லப்பாடகர். கவிசொல்ல, inf. To make poetry. கவிச்சக்கரவர்த்தி, s. A distinguished poet, புலவன். கவிஞர், s. Poets, bards, புலவர். 2. Scientific persons, கலைவல்்லோர். (p.) கவிதை, s. A poem, poetry, verse, a verse of poetry, stanza, பா. (p.) கவித்துவம், s. Poetic style or composition, புலமைத்தன்மை. கவிநாயகன், s. The person to whom a poem is dedicated, who is also the hero, கவிக்கிறைவன். கவிமாலை, s. Verses joined together. கவிரத்தினம், s. A treatise on versification. கவிராயன், s. (Hon.) A poet, புல வன். கவிவல்லோர்--கவிவாணர் s. Learned poets, bards, புலவர். கவிவீரராகவமுதலியார், s. The names of two eminent poets, viz.: அந்தக க்கவிவீரராகவமுதலியார்--முத்தமிழ்க்கவிவீரராகவமு தலியார். the first of whom is said to have been born blind. (Rott.) கவீச்சுரர், s. Eminent poets. 24)

மங்கலம்
mangkalam (p. 338) s. Luckiness, auspiciousness, propitiousness, சுபம். 2. Prosperity, increase, பொலிவு. W. p. 631. MANGALA. 3. Moral and religious merit, according to the Shastras, தருமம். 4. Marriage, கலியாணம். 5. Praise, panegyric, blessing, வாழ்த்து. 6. Auspicious objects, used on festive occasions; of which eight are special: 1. சாமரம், chowry, a fly-whisk; 2. நிறைகுடம், a full ornamented pot; 3. கண்ணாடி, mirrors; 4. தோட்டி, elephant's goads; 5. முரசு, drums; 6. விளக்கு, lamps; 7. கொடி, flags; 8. இணைக் கயல், A brace of carp-fish. மங்கலகாரியம்--மங்கலச்செய்கை--மங் கலவினை s. A festive, auspicious or joyous ceremony--as a marriage, putting on jewels; a temple-festival, on a girl's arrival at puberty, &c. மங்கலகீதம்--மங்கலப்பாட்டு, s. Auspicious chants, music, &c. மங்கலகௌசிகம்--மங்களகௌசிகம்-மங்களகௌசிகை, s. A tune, ஓரிராகம். (சது.) மங்கலச்சொல்--மங்கலமொழி, s. Auspicious words, in place of inauspicious terms, fancied to be lucky for speaker or hearer. 2. Language of congratulation, or benediction, ஆசிவசனம். 3. Auspicious terms, together with their synonyms, used for beginning a poem. They are twenty-two in number: 1. திரு, wealth, &c.; 2. யானை, an elephant; 3. தேர், a chariot; 4. பரி, a horse; 5. கடல், the sea; 6. மலை, a mountain; 7. மணி, a gem; 8. பூ, a flower; 9. புகழ், praise; 1. சீர், good state or condition; 11. மதி, the moon; 12. நீர், water; 13. எழுத்து, a letter, a writing; 14. பொன், gold; 15. ஆரணம், Vedas, the law; 16. சொல், a word; 17. புயல், cloud; 18. நிலம், earth; 19. கங்கை, the Ganges; 2. உலகம், the world; 21. பரிதி, the sun; 22. அமிழ்தம், nectar. Others give more. (சது.) மங்கலஸ்நானம்--மங்கலநானம், s. Bathing for an auspicious ceremony, as a marriage, a temple-festival, &c. மங்கலதினம்--மங்கலநாள், s. An auspicious day. மங்கலதூரியம்--மங்கலபேரிகை--மங் கலமுரசு--மங்கலவாத்தியம், s. Auspicious drums and other musical instruments. மங்கலநதி, s. A sacred river. மங்கலநாண், s. The marriage-badge, including the தாலி and its cord. மங்கலபத்திரிகை--மங்கலவோலை, s. A marriage-invitation. மங்கலபாடகர், s. Bards, encomiasts, panegyrists. மங்கலபுருஷன், s. A proper man to conduct a festival, or to communicate good tidings--as one married, not a widower, not deformed, one good tempered, prosperous, &c. மங்கலமங்கையர், s. [pl. com. கட்டுக்க ழுத்தியர்.] Women wearing the marriagebadge. மங்கலமுகூர்த்தம்--மங்கலவேளை, s. [com. முகூர்த்தவேளை.] An auspicious hour. மங்கலம்புரிய, inf. To be united in marriage. மங்கலவணி, s. Auspicious ornaments. மங்கலவழக்கு, s. Auspicious words, terms or usages. மங்கலவள்ளை, s. A poem on a female of noble birth, in nine வெண்பா, and nine வகுப்பு See பிரபந்தம். மங்கலவாரம், s. An auspicious day, commonly Monday or Wednesday, or any day on which there is a favorable configuration of the planets, நல்லநாள். 2. See மங்கலன். மங்கலவார்த்தை, s. Auspicious language, as சுபவசனம். 2. Good news. மங்கலவாழ்த்து, s. Salutation, benediction, praise, especially to a hero in the opening or concluding of a poem. மங்கலவினைஞர், s.
