āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

paṇ (p. 292) s. Harmonious sound, music, song, musical mode, tune, இசைப்பாட்டு. 2. A full stringed lute, a வீணை with ten strings, நிறைநரம்புள்ளவீணை. 3. Horse's saddle or harness, gear, tackle, குதிரைக்கல்லணை. (சது.) 4. Fitness, adaptation, good quality, suitableness, order, தகுதி. 5. Docility, teachableness, training, அமைவு. 6. Trappings of an elephant or other beast, வாகன ங்களின்மேற்றவிசு. 7. Larboard side of a dhoney, மரக்கலத்தின்இடப்புறம். 8. Stay-rope, &c., on the larboard side, பாய்மரக்கயிறு. 9. [for. பணி.] Service, work business employment; service to the Deity, or a superior, தொண்டு. 1. [limited.] A time, a season, as a day, year, &c., பண், 4. Four kinds of melody in reference to soil; பாலை, barren ground; 2. குறிஞ்சி, hilly ground; 3. மருதம், cultivated land; 4. செவ்வழி, land near the sea. (சது.) பண், 21. Twenty one kinds of melody, in three classes: இராப்பண், 9, a class of nine night-melodies; பகற்பண், 9, a class of nine day-melodies; பொதுப் பண், 3, a class of three melodies for night or day. பண்கயிறு, s. Larboard stay-rope of a dhoney. பண்கொடி, s. A cane, or ratan used for wattling, or wicker work; an osier, a long switch. பண்டர், s. Bards, singers of a low caste accompanying a great man, and chanting his praises, பாடற்கீழ்மக்கள். (சது.) பண்ணானவன், appel. n. A man of good manners or habits. (limited.) பண்ணாய்ப்பாடுதல்--பண்ணிலேபாடு தல், பண்ணோடேபடித்தல்--பண்ணோடேபாடுதல், v. noun. Singing in a proper tune. பண்ணுக்குவருதல். As பண்படுதல். (R.) பண்ணுறுத்த, inf. To harness. 2. To garnish. (p.) பண்தப்புதல். The tune going wrong. பண்படுதல், v. noun. Becoming or being made fit or serviceable, சீர்திருந் துதல். 2. Being proper for tillage, as land, செப்பமாதல். 3. Being obedient, submissive, teachable, அமைதல். 4. Helping, serving, உதவுதல். பண்படுத்தல்--பண்படுத்துதல், v. noun. Fitting, adapting, tempering, seasoning, preparing, or tilling land. பண்படாதசிறை, s. An untractable slave. பண்படாநிலம், s. Soil not prepared for tillage. 2. Uncultivated land. பண்பட்டவன், appel. n. [neg. பண்படா தவன்.] An educated, experienced man. பண்பட்டுத்திரிதல், v. noun. Attending courteously on one; or continuing in a course of service. பண்பாடுதல், Learning the gamut and other varicties. பண்பிடித்தல், Pitching the right musical note. காலப்பண், s. Morning. சால்பண், s. A wicker work covering a large water jar. செவிப்பண், s. A cane basket to enclose a water-ewer, &c., for travellers. மாரிப்பண், s. Rainy season. விடியற்பண், s. Daybreak. 26) *

pḷ (p. 303) s. The பள்ளர் caste, as பள்ளு-In. Jaffna it is used with its grammatical change, as பட்குடி, &c. பள்ளக்குடி, s. A family of the பள் ளர் caste. பள்ளப்பயல், s. A பள்ளன். 2. [in contempt.] A slave, a fellow. பள்ளப்பாட்டுபாடுதல், v. noun Abusing, or calling one a . பள்ளப்பிள்ளை, s. A man or woman of the பள் caste. பள்ளர், s. [sing. பள்ளன், fem. பள்ளி, பள்ளச்சி, பள்ளத்தி.] A low dependant caste employed in husbandry, &c., under their feudal lords, a peasant tribe dwelling in the south, supposed to be a change of மள்ளர். பள்ளர்சேரி--பள்ளச்சேரி, s. A village of the பள்ளர் caste. 22)

pāṭl (p. 307) s. A poem, large or small, பாட்டு. 2. See பாடுதல், singing. (c.) மூவாயிரம்பாடல். A poem of three thousand verses. அகஸ்தியர்பாடல். Agastya's poetry. 47) *

pāṭu (p. 308) கிறேன், பாடினேன், பாடுவேன், பாட, v. a. or n. To sing, to chant, to hymn; to warble as birds; to hum as bees or beetles, இசைபாட. 2. To make verses to compose poetry, கவிபாட. 3. To sing verses from a book, வாசிக்க. 4. [fig. vul.] To abuse one, திட்ட. 5. [prov.] To sing in running at the play of prison-bars, பாடி யோட. (c.) பாடிக்கறக்கிறமாட்டைப்பாடிக்கறக்கவேணும், ஆடி க்கறக்கிறமாட்டைஆடிக்கறக்கவேணும். A cow which requires singing or dancing, when milked, must be so dealt with; i.e. appropriate means to secure an end. பாடிக்காட்ட, inf. To teach one to sing. பாடிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To make a poem for another. பாடிப்படிக்க, inf. To read and sing. பாடிவைக்க, inf. To make a poem and give it to the world. பாடுவன்--பாடுவான்--பாடுவோன், appel. n. [fem. பாடுவள், பாடுவாள்] A singer. பாடுவிச்சி, s. A songstress, as பாடுவாள். குரலைநெருக்கிப்பாட, inf. To chant with a compressed shrill tone. குரலைவிரித்துப்பாட, inf. To chant in a full tone. பாடல்--பாடுதல், v. noun. Singing, chanting. See ஆடல்பாடல். பாடற்கிலக்கணம், s. Versification. 14)

pāṭṭu (p. 309) v. noun. [used substantively.] Singing, chanting, பாடுதல் 2.A song, hymn, ode, poem, as sung or adapted to music, இசைப்பா. 3. A poetic verse or stanza, poetry, verse, செய்யுள். (சது.) 5. [in irony.] Abuse, வசைமொழி. 6. A word, a saying, சொல்; [ex பாடு, to sing.] பாட்டாளி, s. A songster. 2. See பாடு. பாட்டுக்காரன், s. A poet, the writer of the poem in question, கிரந்தகருத்தன். 2. A singer, பாடுவோன். 3. The chorister in dramatic performances, இசைவல்லான். பாட்டுக்கேட்க, inf. To hear, or attend to the singing of a singer. 2. To be abused. பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்--பாட்டுநாயகன், s. The hero of a poem. பாட்டுப்படிக்க, inf. As பாட்டுப்பாட. பாட்டுப்பாட--பாட்டுச்சொல்ல, inf. To sing a song. 2. To make verses, to versify, &c. பாட்டுப்போக்கு, v. noun. Poetic style or diction. பாட்டுமுரையும்--பாட்டும்பயனும்--பா ட்டும்பொருளும். The verse and its commentary. பாட்டுவாளி, s.
