koṟi (p. 147) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To work or force off the husks from grains of rice with the fore-teeth--as persons, or with the beak--as birds; to bite or nibble grain, &c., பல்முதலியவற்றாற் கொறிக்க. 2. (fig.) To pick, eat but little; to piddle, கொஞ்சங்கொஞ்சமாயுண்ண. 3. [prov.] To make a ticking, clucking sound, கட்டுவிட்டொலிக்க. 4. To chirp--as a lizard, &c., பல்லிமுதலிய கொறிக்க. கொறிநெற்பதமாயிற்று. The paddy is grown so ripe that the husk can be easily forced off. அவன் என் தலையைக் கொறிக்கப்பார்க்கிறான். He attempts to nibble my head, i. e. to injure me. ஏன்சும்மாகொறிக்கிறாய்? [prov.] Why do you chatter in vain? கொறித்துப்பார்த்தல், v. noun. Trying rice that has been for husking, by biting, to ascertain whether it is dry enough. 2. ckuṉm (p. 154) s. A bird, பறவை. 2. (c.) [in augury.] The sight, chirping, flight, &c., of birds--as indicating good or bad events; good or bad omens in general, நிமித்தம். W. p. 824. S'AKUNA. 3. (சது.) Edible or other tuberous roots, கிழங்கு. சகுனசாத்திரம், s. Augury, or the science of omens. சகுனத்தடை--சகுனப்பிழை, s. Ill omens. சகுனத்தடையாயிருக்க, inf. To meet with a bad sign or omen. சகுனத்தடையாய்ச்சொல்ல, inf. To hinder a business by asking questions. சகுனம்பார்த்தல், v. noun. Practising augury, or observing omens. துர்ச்சகுனம்--அவசகுனம், s. ckkḷtti (p. 155) s. [prop. சககளத்தி.] A joint or rival wife. 2. Productions in the animal or vegetable kingdom resembling others more genuine and considered counterfeit as produced by Visvamitra in opposition to Brahma--Note. Most of the productions in nature are divided into genuine and counterfeit; [ex சக, et. களத் திரம்.] (c.) சக்களத்திப்பிள்ளைகள், s. Step-children. சக்களத்திப்பிள்ளையைப்போற்பார்த்தல். Treating one as a step-child; i. e. unkindly. சக்களத்திப்போராட்டம், v. noun. Mutual animosity, jealousy; (lit.) fighting between rival wives. சக்களமை, s. [com. சக்களத்தித்தனம்.] Rivalry between wives of the same husband, சக்களத்திகளுக்குள்விரோதம். 2. (fig.) Jealousy, animosity between two persons, கடும்பகை. சக்களவன், s. [prov.] A rival paramour, a gallant or cecisbeo. 2)

cñcāym (p. 157) s. [loc.] Work done for daily wages, in opposition to that by the job, குத்தகையல்லாதவேலை. 2. The cultivation of fields in shares for a part of the produce, குடிவாரம். 3. The management of lands, fisheries, &c., by the proprietor, without farming them, பண்ணைபார்த்தல். 4. Gratuity, இலவசம். சஞ்சாயத்திலெடுத்துக் கொள்ளப்பார்க்கிறான். He intends to get it on (favorable.) terms. சஞ்சாயக்குளி, s. The pearl fishery managed by the government itself. 11) *

Tinkling ornaments for the feet, காற்றண்டை. 17. A club, a bludgeon, த ண்டாயுதம். (சது.) 18. A pole for the shoulder in carrying burdens, காவுதடி. (நிக.) 19. Gold, பொன். 2. Noise, sound, ஒலி. 21. Wielding the shield as a fencer, சிலம்பம். The metrical feet are thirty, divided into five classes, viz.: 1. உரிச்சீர், or ஆசிரியவுரிச்சீர், feet peculiar to the அகவல் verse--as (a.) தேமா, foot of two simple syllables, a spondee. (b.) புளிமா, one compound and one simple syllable; an iambus. (c.) கருவி ளம். Two compound syllables, a pyrrhic. (d.) கூவிளம். One simple and one compound syllable, a trochee. The names serve also as models for the kinds of feet respectively. They are names of trees and their fruits. 2. வெண்சீர், or வெண்பாஉரி ச்சீர். Feet peculiar to வெண்பா verse; as (a.) தே-மாங்-காய். A foot of three simple syllables. (b.) புளி-மாங்-காய். One compound and two simples. (c.) கரு-விளங்--காய். Two compounds and one simple; an anap&ae;st. (d.) கூ-விளங்-காய். A simple, a compound and a simple. 3. வஞ்சியுரிச்சீர், or வஞ்சிச்சீர். Feet peculiar to வஞ்சி verse; as (a.) தே-மா ங்-கனி. A foot of two simple syllables and one compound. (b.) புளி-மாங்-கனி. One compound, one simple, and one compound; an amphibrach. (c.) கரு-விளங்கனி. Three compounds, a tribrach. (d.) கூவிளங்-கனி. One simple and two compound syllables. 4. பொதுச்சீர். Feet of four syllables peculiar to வஞ்சி verse; there are sixteen of them; the models for these are formed by adding respectively, தண்-ணி ழல், தண்-பூ, நறும்-பூ, நறு-நிழல் to the terms employed in the உரிச்சீர். 5. ஓரசைச்சீர். A foot of a single syllable; as (a.) நாள். A foot of one simple syllable. (b.) மலர். A foot of a compound syllable.--Note. 1. One use of the last two is to end the வெண்பா verse. --Note. 2. Sometimes feet answering to காசு, instead of நாள், and பிறப்பு instead of மலர், are employed to end the வெண்பா verse, i. e., the addition of குற்றுகரம் or short உ to the foregoing; and rarely the full உ, or முற்றுகரம் is found. சீராயிருக்கிறேன். I am in a good state. சீரழிக்க, inf. To disturb, subvert, pervert. 2. To ruin, demolish. 3. To disparage one's character. (c.) சீராக, inf. (adverbially.) Orderly, decently, properly, soberly, consistently, circumspectly, moderately, temperately, discreetly. சீராகநடக்க, inf. To act consistently, &c. சீராடிக்கொண்டுபோதல், v. noun. [prov.] The going of a married girl to her father's house for redress of grievances from her husband's family, especially from her mother-in-law. (c.) சீரானநடை, s. A moderate pace. 2. Good moral character without excess. சீரிழுக்க, inf. To pervert good circumstances. (R.) சீரிட--சீர்செய்ய--சீர்கொடுக்க, inf. To give house-hold utensils, &c., to a daughter when married. 2. To put in order, சீர்செய்ய. சீருக்குவர--சீரிலேவர, inf. To be altered for the better, to come to a right or natural state. சீரைத்தேட, inf. To desire wealth. (Avv.). சீரைவிசாரிக்க, inf. To inquire after one's health. (R.) சீர்குலைய, inf. To be disordered, deranged. 2. To be lost--as character, ruined--as circumstances; to be disgraced. 3. (fig.) To be defloured, கற்பழிய. சீர்குலைச்சல், v. noun. Disorder, immodesty. (R.) சீர்கெட, inf. To degenerate, deteriorate, to become tarnished, corrupt, spoiled. சீர்கெட்டவன்--சீர்கேடன், s. A worthless person, a wretch. 2. A sloven. சீர்கெட்டவாழ்வு, s. Unhappy, domestic life. சீர்கேடு, s. Disorder, derangement, irregularity. 2. clumsiness, awkwardness. 3. Ugliness, deformity. சீர்கேடி, s. The goddess of misfortune or poverty, மூதேவி. (நிக.) (p.) சீர்சிறப்பு, s. Splendid prosperity. சீர்செய்ய, inf. To put in order, regulate, improve. 2. To adorn. 3. As சீரிட, which see. சீர்திருத்த, inf. To correct, rectify, amend, ameliorate, to perform. சீர்திருந்த--சீர்பொருந்த, inf. To be corrected, rectified, reformed, &c. சீர்தூக்க, inf. To weigh or examine with a balance. 2. To weigh in the mind, to consider, deliberate. 3. To compare--commonly with பார்த்தல், for the second and third persons. சீர்தூக்கிப்பார். Ponder this well. சீர்நிருவாகம், s. Condition, state, circumstances; [ex நிருவாகம், strength.] சீர்பண்ண, inf. To make ready, to put in order, correct, improve. சீர்பதி, s. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். See சீபதி. சீர்பாதம், s. The divine feet, the illustrious feet--spoken reverently for the person. See சீபாதம். சீர்பெற, inf. To attain prosperity. சீர்போட, inf. [prov.] To tie the balance string to a paper kite. (c.) சீர்ப்பட--சீர்பட, inf. To be restored, to amend, recover, come to a good state --as செம்மைப்பட. சீர்ப்படுத்த, inf. To reform, improve, bring to a good state--as செம்மைப்படுத்த. சீர்ப்படுத்திவைக்க, inf. To arrange things in order. சீர்ப்பாடு, s. Celebrity, distinction, eminence, splender, beauty. (p.) சீர்ப்பிழை, s. An impediment, an obstacle, an untoward circumstance. 2. Fault, defect, குற்றம். சீர்மடக்கு, v. noun. Repetition of a foot in a line. (p.) சீர்மரம், s. A weaver's beam, படமரம். சீர்வரிசை, s. Presents made to a married girl, or one arrived at puberty (c.) ஒருகண்டசீராய், adv. Equally, uniformly, uninterruptedly. ஒருசீரானவன், appel. n. One who maintains consistency of character, moderation of temper, &c. பலசீரும்நடக்கும். You will be hospitably entertained. Or the matter will take verious shapes. துர்ச்சீர், s. cuṭu (p. 193) கிறது, சுட்டது, ம், சுட, v. n. To be hot as from fever, become heated, காய. 2. To burn, be consumed by fire, எரிய. 3. To feel hot--as the sun's rays, be hot to the touch--as fire, &c., வெயில்முதலியசுட. 4. To kindle up as the temper and feeling under abuse, சொற்சுட. (c.) 5. To inflame, as lust, காமஞ்சுட. தண்ணீர்சுட்டுப்போயிற்று. The water is hot. சுடவைக்க, inf. To set liquids, &c., on the fire to be heated. சுடுசாதம்--சுடுசோறு, s. Boiled rice when hot. சுடுமணல், s. Hot sand. சுடுவனம், s. A burning forest, எரிவ னம். 2. See சுடு, v. a. சுடச்சுட, inf. (used adverbially.) While burning, or when fresh. நான் அவனுக்குச் சுடச்சுடக் கொடுத்தேன். I gave him a good whipping. சுடச்சுடத்தின்னல். Eating (food) hot. சுடச்சுடப்பேசுதல். Speaking sarcastically. சுடச்சுடக்காரியம்பார்த்தல். Attending to an affair while it is fresh. சுடுநீர், s. [com. வெந்நீர்.] Hot water. சுடுசொல், s. Sarcasm, irony. சுடுநாற்றம், s. Smell produced by burning hair or the dead. சுடுதண்ணீர்ப்பீங்கான், s. [prop. வெந் நீர்ப்பீங்கான்.] Hot water plate. (Colloq.) சுட்டுப்போக, inf. To become hot. சுடுவான், s. (in seamen's language.) A caboose or cooking place in a vessel, மரக்கலத்தின்மடைப்பள்ளி. மனஞ்சுட, inf. To be cut to the heart, (lit.) burnt in mind. 30)

cuẕi (p. 198) s. Whirling as water or wind, a whirl, twirl, sinuosity, vortex, eddy, நீர்ச் சுழிமுதலியன. 2. Incurvature, curl in the formation of letters, circle, &c., as each curve in ன், ண், and the sign of the long vowels in கீ, மூ, டே, &c., அட்சரச்சுழி. 3. Curl of the hair of a horse's forehead, மயிர்ச்சுழி. 4. Involution of the navel, தொப்புட்சுழி. 5. Circular, or curved lines on the head, body, &c., supposed to be indicative of one's fortune, அங்கச்சழி. 6. Circles on the surface of water, as by the fall of a stone, &c., கல்லெறிசுழி. (c.) சுழிசுத்தம்பார்த்தல், . noun. Examining the curled marks of a horse. (c.) இராசகோபாலசக்கரச்சுழி, s. A goldchakarum coin issued by Vijaya Raghava, a king of Tanjore. பிள்ளையார்சுழி, s. A mark, used by the Hindus in the beginning of a book; by the Saivas in honor of Gan&ecire;sa, and the Vaishnavas as an abbreviation of ஓம் the mystic om. At the north, the Sa. Sri is used. பிள்ளையார்சுழிபோட, inf. To make the mark in an account, indicating that it is right. மூன்றரைமாற்றுச்சக்கரச்சுழி, s. A gold coin at Keelvelur, near Negapatam. சுழிவரைய, inf. To make a circlet with a pin, &c. சுழிசுழிக்க, inf. To form small curves, or circlets. சுழிபோட--சுழியிட, inf. To form small curves to the letters. சுழிக்குணம்--சுழித்தனம், s. [prov.] Knavery, கள்ளத்தனம். சுழிப்புத்தி, s. [prov. as சுழித்தனம்.] Knavish policy, knavery. சுழியச்சு, s. [prov.] A goldsmith's matrix for making impressions. சுழியன், s. A knave, a rogue, a schemer, a man of tricks, an irritable man, வஞ் சகன். 2. A whirl-wind, சுழல்காற்று. (c.) சுழியாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak sharply, so as to hurt one's feelings. சுழிப்பிழையன், s. Any domestic animal wanting the proper fortunate marks, கெட்டசுழியுள்ளது. 2. (fig.) A worthless fellow, கூடாதவன். (c.). சுழிபேதம், s. The different sorts of marks on the head of a horse. அவனென்னைச் சுழிபேதம் பண்ணிப்போட்டான். He has cheated me. சித்திரைச்சுழியன், s. A kind of storm that prevails in the month of April. (c.) சுழியாணி, s. The lower pin of a door or gate serving instead of a hinge. சுழியாணிக்கட்டை, s. The block or stone to receive the pin of a door, a gate, &c. சுழியாணிக்கதவு, s. A door made with pins to turn in grooves instead of hinge. சுழியோட, inf. To dive into water. 2. (fig.) To penetrate the minds of men, மனதையாராய. சுழியோடுகிறவன், appel. n. A diver. 57)
