To conjure, enchant by means of incantation with sacred ashes, &c., held by a magician in his hand and afterwards thrown on the person to be enchanted and into his mouth; applied also to cure a disease, or to effect some specific object; to repeat incantations with the reception or administration of medicine, மந்திரவித்தை செய்ய. 2. A flatterer, fawning rogue, flattering impostor, முகத் துதிசெய்பவன். 2. A person who walks externally according to rule, but who is privately irregular and vicious, மாயக் காரன். ஆசாரக்கள்ளி, s. A base woman who outwardly appears faithful to her husband. ஆசாரச்சாவடி, s. King's court, கொலுமண்டபம். ஆசாரத்துடனிருக்க, inf. To remain uncontaminated, unpolluted after ablution. ஆசாரபோசன், s. A person of very respectable and dazzling appearance. ஆசாரப்பிழை, s. Ill-manners. 2. Want of cleanliness. ஆசாரப்புடவை, s. Silk cloth, or some other, worn when the daily rites are performed. The former is deemed the more sacred and not needing to be dipped in water for purification. Those unable to keep silk for the purpose, wear cotton cloths and dip them every time to purify them. ஆசாரவாசல்--ஆசாரவாயில், s. The outer hall in a king's court, where his subjects may assemble. 2. கிரகம்
kirakam (p. 109) s. A house, a mansion, or palace, வீடு, Wils. p. 295. GRUHA. 2. A planet, கோள். Wils. p. 34. GRAHA. The planets in the Hindu system are nine, called நவக் கிரகம், viz.: 1. ஆதித்தன் or ஞாயிறு, the sun. 2. சோமன் or திங்கள், the Moon. 3. அங்காரகன் or செவ்வாய், Mars. 4. புதன், Mercury. 5. பிரகற்பதி--பிரகஸ்பதி or வியாழன், Jupiter. 6. சுக்கிரன் or வெள்ளி, Venus. 7. சனி, Saturn. 8. இராகு, Caput draconis. 9. கேது, Cauda draconis. The last two are considered visible in eclipses of the sun and moon, இராகு being, black, and கேது red. (See under கோள்.) 3. சிவன்
civaṉ (p. 188) s. Siva, the third of the Indian Triad, in the character of destroyer, or reducer of things to their primitive atoms. By his votaries he is considered the supreme god. the other deities being subject to him, சங்கரன். சிவகணம், s. The attendant demi-gods of Siva, commonly in companies, சிவன் சேனை. சிவசமயம், s. The Siva religion. சிவசிந்தை, s. Divine contemplation, meditation on Siva--as சிவத்தியானம். சிவஞானசித்தியார்--சிவஞானசித்தி, s. A commentary on சிவஞானபோதம். See சித்தி யார். சிவஞானபோதம், s. A celebrated work consisting of twelve rules translated from the ரௌரவம், or the sixteenth Agama, being almost the only part of the Agamas known in Tamil. It is regarded as divine, without origin, and as not to be read unless the person has attained a competent degree in the religion. Other works--as சித்தியார், சிவப்பி ரகாசம், தத்துவப்பிரகாசம், &c., are commentaries on this or other treatises in support of its doctrines, ஓராகமநூல். சிவஸ்தலம்--சிவஸ்தானம்--சிவதலம், s. The religion of Siva. 2. The profession of the Siva religion. 3. Adherence, attachment, or devotedness to Siva. சிவபுண்ணியம், s. Deeds of merit, performances in reference to Siva--as சிவதர்மம். சிவபூசை, s. The worship of Siva as practised in the temple or by the கிரியை க்காரன்; the Siva-pujah, consisting of the offering of flowers, milk, boiled rice, fruits, &c., waving incense and light-reciting mantras and praises, prostrating, before the idol, &c., 2. Mental worship of Siva, in which there is an idol ceremony corresponding to what is mentioned above. சிவபூசைவேளையிலே கரடியைவிட்டாட்டுகிறதா. Is it proper to exhibit a dancing bear during the Siva-pujah--i. e. to trifle on a solemn occasion? சிவபுராணம், s. The Siva-Puranas, forming ten out of the eighteen. See புராணம். சிவபுரி, s. The consecration of a temple or image of Siva. சிவப்பிராமணர், s. Brahmans, குருக்கள் who adhere to the Siva or Agama doctrines and practices, as distinguished from those who profess the வைதீகம். சிவப்பிரீதி, s. That which is acceptable, agreeable and pleasing to Siva--as fruits, &c. 2. May it be acceptable to Siva, --spoken by the receiver as an acknowledgement of a gift, an act of reverence, &c. சிவமயம், s. A term of invocation; also of benediction--meaning happiness, prosperity, and success, சுபமஸ்து. சிவமுந்திருக்கூட்டமும், s. See under கூட்டம். சிவமூர்த்திபேதங்கள், s. The different forms assumed by the deity, the gods. சிவராத்திரி, s. (Sometimes சிவநிசி.) The night preceding the new moon in February, kept as a watchnight in honor of Siva. சிவவாக்கியம், s. A poem on theism, wholly condemning polytheism, ஓர் நூல். சிவவாக்கியர், s. The name of a celebrated saint, the author of the poem சிவவாக்கியம். சிவலிங்கம், s. The Linga, as the chief image and material object of worship in the Saiva religion. சிவலோகம், s. The world of Siva, being the upper of the seven superior worlds. See சிவபுரி. சிவவேடம், s. The habiliments, or other badges characteristic of the worshippers of Siva--as red vestments, sacred beads, ashes, the linga, &c. சிவனடியார், s. Votaries of Siva. 2. The sixty-three special votaries of Siva mentioned in Periya Purana. சிவாகமம், s. The Agamas as the scriptures of the Siva sect, being twentyeight; of these the சிவஞானபோதம், a part of the ரௌரவம் and the வாதுளம், are translated into Tamil. The place for an image of Siva used for daily worship; [ex ஆதனம்.] சிவாயநம, s. The famous five lettered incantation called the மூலமந்திரம்--as being the foundation of spiritual wisdom and all religion, and the means prescribed and proper for obtaining liberation, from births and union with the supreme. சிவார்ச்சனை, s. Vishnu, as நரசிங்கம்; [ex அரி, lion.] நரவாகனம், s. A palankeen as supported by men, சிவிகை. 2. A man as the vehicle of Kuvera, குபேரனைச்சுமப் போன். நரவாகனன், s. நாகம்
nākam (p. 273) s. The cobra-de-capella of hooded snake, நல்லபாம்பு; 2. A naga, or demigod, having a human face, with the tail of a serpent, and the expanded neck of the cobra. The race is said to inhabit a region called Patala or நாகலோகம், under the earth. 3. Lead, நயம். 4. Black lead, காரியம். 5. The black monkey, கருங்குரங்கு. 6. Monkey in general, குரங்கின்பொது. 7. An elephant, யானை. 8. A tree. See புன்னை. 9. Fragrant herb, as ஞாழல். 1. A medicinal tree, ஓர் மருந்துமரம். 11. An astrological karna, ஓர் கரணம். W. p. 458. NAGA. 12. (Sa Naka.) The visible heavens, ether, sky, atmosphere, ஆகாயம். 13. Swerga or the Indian paradise, சுவர்க்கம். 14. A kind of prepared arsenic, நாகபாஷாணம். 15. A kind of precious stone, நாகப்பச்சை. 16. A mountain, மலை. See நாகு. 17. Fine cloth, நற்றூசு.--Note. Of the நாகம் snakes there are said to be of different castes as among men; being four chief, and one inferior caste; which differ in form, motion, food and habits. அஷ்டநாகம், s. The eight famed serpents of the nether world employed at the eight cardinal points to support the earth are: 1. வாசுகி. 2. அனந்தன். 3. தக்ஷ கன். 4. சங்கபாலன். 5. குளிகன். 6. பதுமன். 7. மகாபதுமன். 8. கார்க்கோடன். To these the thousand headed ஆதிசேக்ஷன், king of the race, supporting the earth at the centre is sometimes numbered as a ninth. நாககள்ளி, s. A kind of recumbent shrub, ஓர்கள்ளி. நாககன்னி--நாககன்னிகை, s. Female of the naga race, especially a wife of Arjuna. நாகசாபம், s. Curse of the cobra. inflicted on a person for killing it. See நாகப்பிரிதஷ்டை. நாகசின்னம்--நாகசுரம்--நாகஸ்வரம். s. [com. நாகசரம்.] A kind of pipe or clarionet, one of the chief musical instruments, ஓர்துளைக்கருவி. நாகதத்துவம், s. One of the qualities of women ஸ்திரீகுணத்தொன்று. நாகதம்பிரான்--நாகதேவன், s. [prov.] the cobra snake regarded as a god, properly applied to ஆதிசேஷன், the chief of the nether world. See நல்லதம்பிரான். நாகதாளி, s. A species of தாளி, the root of which is used by snake dancers-the snake drawing back its head, and retiring when it is presended; also deemed an antidote to snake bites, Cacumis anguinus, L. நாகதாளிகள்ளி, s. A plant fed on by the silvestre or cochineal insect. Oblong Indian fig. (Ains.) நாகதிசை, s. West point, மேற்கு. நாகதீபம், s. A lamp in the form of a five headed cobra, ஐந்தலைவிளக்கு. நாகதேவி--நாகம்மா, s. The cobra, as a goddess. நாகநாதன்--நாகநாயகன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். 2. As நாகதேவன். நாகபடம், s. The spread and figured neck of the cobra, பாம்பின்படம். 2. [com. நாகவடம்.] An ear ornament in imitation of the spread neck of the cobra, ஓர்கா தணி. நாகபட்டணம், s. The town of Negapatam, ஓரூர். நாகபந்தம், s. One of the சித்திரகவி or curious kind of poems. நாகபாசம், s. [in mythol.] A kind of snake-like rope, with a noose or knot, and having life. It is obtained of the gods by austerities; and in war sent to entwine itself about the foe, பாம்புருவமான படைக்கலம். நாகப்பச்சை, s. A precious stone. See ஆற்றுப்பச்சை. நாகப்பற்று--நாகவாடை, s. Alloy of zine in silver, துத்துநாகப்பிடிப்பு. நாகப்பாம்பு, s. The cobra. நாகப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The making of a five headed cobra and worshipping it, to expiate the sin of killing a cobra by the person or his ancestors, which it is supposed prevents offspring. நாகப்பிரம்பு, s. A kind of rod in the shpe of a snake, ஓர்பிரம்பு. நாகப்பூ--நாகம்பூ, s. The flowers of the நாகம் tree, used medicinally; also called சிறுநாகப்பூ. நாகப்பூச்சி, s. A worm, an earth-worm, also called பூநாகம், by native doctors, who make of it several preparations. நாகமணல், s. Sand containing lead. நாகமணி--நாகரத்தினம், s. The gem supposed to be found in the head of the cobra. See ஐந்தலைநாகம். நாகமரம், s. A kind of red tree. நாகமல்லி--நாகமல்லிகை, s. A medicinal species of the மல்லிகை, used for dying black. The root forms a drug, White flowered justicia, Justicia nasuta, L. நாகமோடி, s. [with வேஷ்டி or சேலை.] A cloth with serpentine stripes, ஓர்பு டவை. நாகம்பூ, s. See நாகப்பூ. நாகராசா, s. The chief of the nagas, ஆதிசேடன். நாகலோகம், s. Swerga, தேவலோகம். 2. The world or region of the nagas under the earth, கீழுலகத்தொன்று. நாகவடம், s. See நாகபடம். நாகவராளி, s. A kind of tune, ஓரிரா கம். நாகவல்லி--நாகவள்ளி, s. A betel plant, வெற்றிலைக்கொடி. 2. [also நாகவல்லி முகூர்த்தம்.] The finishing ceremony of a marriage on the fifth day, கல்யாணச்ச டங்கிலொன்று. நாகவாடை, s. In gold coin, a slight alloy, supposed to be contracted from the metal of the mould, செம்பூறல். நாகவாய், s. An instrument used by turners, ஓர்கடைச்சற்கருவி. நாகாசனன், s. pañca (p. 290) --பஞ்சம், adj. Five-fold, ஐந்து. W. p. 493. PANCHAT or PANCHAN. பஞ்சகச்சஞ்சொருக, inf. To tuck up the cloth in five ways. See சொருகு, v. பஞ்சகச்சாயம், s. Five kinds of cakes. பஞ்சகதி, s. The five paces of the horse. See துரககதி. பஞ்சகந்தம், s. The five aromatics. See கந்தம். பஞ்சகம், s. Any thing of five parts. பஞ்சகம்மாளர், s. The five deities, or forms of deity performing operations for the benefit of souls. 1. பிரமா, creator, or evolver of the universe; 2. விட்டுணு, preserver, who furnishes each soul with its allotted portion of jois, and sorrows, as the results of former actions; 3. உருத்திரன், destroyer, reducing souls and worlds to their primitive elements; 4. மகேசுரன், obscurer, darkening the understanding, that the soul may act, and work off its accumulation of moral evil, so as to become ripe for salvation; 5. சதாசிவன், enlightener of illuminator, who imparts divine grace, and prepares the soul for emancipation, and union with the deity. A pentagon. See ஐங்கோணம். பஞ்சகோலம், s. The mixture of five spices, சுக்கு, திப்பிலி, திப்பிலிமூலம், செவ்வியம், and சித்திரமூலம்; [ex Kola. pepper.] பஞ்சகௌடம், s. The five divisions of Bengal or the கௌடம் country. The five parts of the Neem, or Margosa tree; the flowers fruit, leaves, bark and root; [ex நிம்பம், margosa.] பஞ்சபட்சி, s. The five birds for augury. See பஞ்சபட்சிக்காதல், under காதல். --The letters, அ, இ, உ, எ, and ஒ, are applied to the birds, and the following accidents, உண்டி, feeding, நடை, walking, அரசு, governing, தூக்கம், sleeping, and சாவு; dying. பஞ்சபட்சிக்காதல், s. A treatise on augury. பஞ்சபட்சிவேளை, s. Augury from the eating, sleeping, walking, governing and dying of the five birds, between the full and the new moon. 2. An auspicious hour, ascertained by augury. பஞ்சபர்வங்கள், s. Five religious ceremonial days in each fortnight. பஞ்சபாணம், s. [alsoஐங்கணை.] The five arrows of Kama consisting of five kinds of flowers; வனசம், lotus; 2. குதம், mango; 3. அசோகு, ashoka; 4. முல்லை, jasmine; 5. நீலம், blue water lily. பஞ்சபாணன், s. A kind of vessel of five plates collectively, or made of five metals, used by advanced religionists, to hold water for purification, பஞ்சலோக பாத்திரம். 2. (R.) The centre piece of this vessel. பஞ்சபூதம், s. The five elements; earth, air, fire, water, and ether. பஞ்சபூதஅணு, s. The five atomic bases. See பரமாணு under பரமம். பஞ்சப்பிராணன், s. The castor-plant whose leaves resemble the five digits, ஆமணக்கு; [ex அங்குலம்.] பஞ்சாசயம், s. The five receptacles in the body are: ஆமாசயம், the stomach; 2. இரத்தசயம், the heart; 3. கர்ப்பாசயம், the womb; 4. சலாசயம், the bladder; 5. மலாசயம், rectum. பஞ்சாக்ஷரம், s. As பஞ்சாக்கரம். பஞ்சாமிர்தம்--பஞ்சாமுதம், s. The five delicacies; milk, curds, ghee, sugar, and honey. (in Wils.) 2. (R.) A mixture of plantains, cocoa kernel, milk, sugar and honey, used in anointing an idol. பஞ்சாமிலம், s. An aggregate of the five acids, jujube. இலந்தை; pomegranate, மாதளை; sorrel, புளியாரை; emblica, நெல்லி, citron, எலுமிச்சை; [ex ஆமிலம்.] W. p. 494. PANCHAMILA. பஞ்சாயுதம், s. The five weapons of Vishnu; the discus, club, chank, bow and sword. 2. [prov.] A gold ornament worn by children or women, on the neck with the tali, bearing in relief the five weapons of Vishnu. It is of two kinds, அரசிலைப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one made in the form of fig-leaf; வட்டப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one in a circular form, ஓராபரணம். பஞ்சாயுதபாணி-பஞ்சாயுதன், s. Vishnu, as bearing the five weapons. பஞ்சார்க்கம், s.
