ஏரி
ēri (p. 79) s. A large tank or reservoir for irrigation, a lake, குளம். 2. [also written எரி.] The seventh lunar asterism, புநர் பூசநாள். (p.) 3. [prov.] The hump of a bullock, இடபத்தின்முரிப்பு. 4. [in reproach.] A prominence on the nape of the neck, through corpulence, புரைகுழல். ஏரிநிமிர்ந்தாலிடையனையும்பாராது. If the ox's hump grow too prominent, it will not submit to the herdsman; i. e. if one of low rank becomes great, he will despise his former superiors. அவனுக்கேரிமுற்றிப்போயிற்று. He is become contumacious, unruly, &c.--spoken of a slave boy when grown, &c. ஏரிகரைக்காட்டாமணக்கு, s. A little shrub, Jatropha glauca. ஏரிப்பாய்ச்சலானநிலம், s. kaṇam (p. 88) s. A particle, a trifle, சி றுமை. Wils. p. 183. KAN'A. 2. A minute portion of time, a moment, காலநுட்பம். 3. A measure of time equal to thirty கலை or four minutes, ஓர்காலஅளவு. wils. p. 261. KHAN'A. 4. A company, tribe, class, clan, flock, herd, a series, கூட்டம். 5. A body of troops. (See கணகம்.) Wils. p. 277. GAN'A. 6. Long-pepper, திப்பிலி. 7. A demon, vampire, பிசாசம். 8. [in astrology.] Asterisms classed under three heads as indicating human, infernal, and divine interference in their influence on the birth of children, நட்சத்திரங்களாற்குறிக்குமூவகைக் கணம். 9. The retinue of a deity, தேவக ணம். 1. One of the ten பொருத்தம், or series of poetry auspicious or the contrary according to the feet of which it is composed. The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. [impr. கணைக் காய்ச்சல்.] A kind of lingering fever in children. 48) *
தியாச்சியம்
tiyācciyam (p. 238) s. (lit. the rejected time.) In astrological calculations a time of three and three-quarters to four Indian hours following the asterism that rules the day, and considered to be unlucky, &c., ஒவ்வொருநட்சத்திரத்திலுஞ்சுபகாரியங்களுக்குவிலக்கப் பட்டநேரம். 2. A leaving, forsaking, விலக் குகை. W. p. 387. TYAJYA. Note.--The beginning of inauspicious time, in the different being in அச்சுவினி after 5 நாழிகை; in பரணி, பூராடம், உத்தரட்டாதி after 24; in கார்த்திகை. இரேவதி, புநர்பூசம், மகம் after 3; உரோகிணி, after 4; மிருகசீரிடம், சுவாதி, விசா கம், கேட்டை, after 14; திருவாதிரை. அத்தம் after 21; பூசம், பூரம், சித்திரை, உத்திராடம் after 2; ஆயிலியம் after 32; உத்திரம், சத யம் after 18; அனுஷம், அவிட்டம், திருவோணம் after 1; மூலம் after 2 and again after 56; பூரட்டாதி after 16. குடும்பத்தாச்சியம், s. Leaving one's family as an ascetic. 111)
நட்சத்திரம்
naṭcattiram (p. 268) --நக்ஷத்திரம், s. Star in general, தாரகைப்பொது. 2. Lunar constellations, நாண்மீன், of which there are twentyseven, forming the lunar Zodiac, with an extra mansion, having no stars of its own, but which taking parts of the contiguous asterisms makes the number twenty-eight. This intercalary asterism occures between the 21st and 22nd, and is used chiefly for astrological purposes. 3. The period during which the moon is passing through an asterism. W. p. 45. NAKSHATRA. The twenty-seven asterisms beginning with Aries are in order, as follows; 1. அசுபதி, or அச்சுவினி. 2. பரணி. 3. கார்த்திகை. 4. உரோகிணி. 5. மிருகசீரிடம், or மிருகசீர்ஷம். 6. ஆதிரை, or திருவாதிரை. 7. புநர்பூசம். 8. பூசம். 9. ஆயிலியம். 1. மகம். 11. பூரம். 12. உத்திரம். 13. அஸ்தம் or அத்தம். 14. சித்திரை. 15. சுவாதி or சோதி. 16. விசாகம். 17. அனுடம் or அனுஷம். 18. கேட்டை. 19. மூலம். 2. பூராடம். 21. உத்திராடம். 22. திருவோணம். 23. அவிட்டம். 24. சதயம். 25. பூரட்டாதி. 26. உத்திரட்டாதி. 27. இரேவதி. Each asterism consists of thirteen degrees and twenty minutes of the Zodiac. There is a particular star in each called யோகம் which serves as an index to the mansion. நட்சத்திரசக்கரம், s. The lunar asterisms collectively forming a lunar Zodiac. 2. Diagram for astrological calculations, as கலப்பைச்சக்கரம், &c. நட்சத்திரசீரகம், s. A kind of cumin, star-anise. See அனீசு. நட்சத்திரதீபம், s. A kind of lamp. நட்சத்திரபதவி, s. The starry sky, as நட்சத்திரமண்டலம். 2. The visible heavens, as a place of bliss for those having a certain degree of religious merit. நட்சத்திரப்பிரமாணம், s. The length of a nakshatra. நட்சத்திரமண்டலம், s. The starry heavens. நட்சத்திரமாலை, s. [in astrol.] A treatise on the lunar constellations, ஓர்சோதிடநூல். 2. The galaxy or milky way, regarded as a string by which துருவன் turns the heavens. 3. A table of the asterisms in the moon's path, the lunar Zodiac. நட்சத்திரவாணம், s. A kind of rocket. See வாணம். (c.) நட்சத்திரவீதி, s. The moon's path in the Zodiac. 28)

pālai (p. 313) s. The iron-wood tree, Mimusops hexandrus, ஓர்மரம். 2. Arid, desert tracts, one of the five species of land. See திணை. 3. [in love poetry.] Temporary separation of lovers. See திணை. 4. A kind of poem. See பிரபந்தம். 5. Sea, ocean, கடல். 6. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். 7. The seventh lunar asterism, புநர்பூசம். 8. Air, tune, melody, in music. See under இசை. 9. [in combin.] A class of plants. 1. As பாலைக்கு ருவி-- Note. The principal பாலை plants, and trees, are ஊசிப்பாலை, a plant, Periploca esculenta; 2. ஏழிலைம்பாலை. ஏழிலைப்பாலை, a tree, Echites scholaris, of which the Tamil and Sanscrit names are derived, from its having seven leaves around the stem; 3. காக்காய்ப் பாலை, a tree, Gelonium bifarium; 4. குட சப்பாலை--கொடிப்பாலை--கறிப்பாலை, a creeping plant, Asclepias volubilis; 5.வெட்பாலை, a plant, Nerium antidysentericum; also ஆடுதின்னாப்பாலை, திருநாமப்பாலை, நிலப்பாலை, பூப் பாலை, விழுப்பாலை, which see in their places. --The seven classes of airs are: செம்பாலை, படுமலைப்பாலை, செவ்வழிப்பாலை, அரும்பாலை, கொ டிப்பாலை, விளரிப்பாலை, மேற்செம்பாலை, which see. பாலைக்கருப்பொருள், s. Men, beasts, things, &c., the adjuncts of arid tracts. They are. 1. பாலைத்தெய்வம், the goddess, Durga, துர்க்கை. 2. பாலைக்குடிமகன், inhabitants, the வேடர், or hunter caste; 3. பாலைத்தலைவன் the chief, as காளை, 4. பா லைநிலத்தூர், the village, as குறும்பு; 5. பாலைநீர், well-water; 6. பாலைப்பண், the melody, as பஞ்சுரம்; 7. பாலைப்பறை, a small drum as துடி; 8. பாலைப்புள், the birds, as the dove, புறா; kite பருந்து; and eagle, கழுகு; 9. பாலைப்பூ, the flowers, as of பூளை, பாலை, and கள்ளி plants; 1. பாலைமரம், the trees as குரா, and மரா; 11. பாலைநிலமாக்கள் தொழில், occupation of the inhabitants-mostly plundering. கொள்ளையாடல்; 12. பாலைமாக்களூண், the food, plunder--on which they principally subsist; 13. பாலைவிலங்கு, the animals, a wild dog that chases tigers; 14. பாலையாழ், a lute of desert tracts. பாலைக்காடு, s. Paulghat district. பாலைக்காட்டுச்சோனை, s. An incessant rain, of four months in Paulghat. See சோனை. பாலைக்கிழத்தி, s. Durga. துர்க்கை. பாலைக்குருவி, s. A species of bird. பாலைநிலம்--பாலைவனம், s. A barren soil as பாலை, 2. பாலைப்பழம், s. The fruit of the பாலை tree. பாலைப்பாணி, s. Sweet juice of the பாலை fruit. 16) *
