He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. kuru (p. 125) s. A guru, a spiritual teacher, a priest, ஆசான்.--Note. According to the shastras, the guru is to be regarded by the disciple as the personification of the deity; and to be worshipped with divine honors. In his presence, the disciple is exonerated from his accustomed rites, and devotions, and addresses him by appellatives, used in addressing the deity of his sect. 2. the planet Jupiter, regarded as the guru or priest of Swerga, &c., வியாழன். 3. Heaviness, weight, பாரம். 4. Consequence, importance, moment, காத்திரம். 5. Greatness, eminence, excellence, exaltedness, பெருமை. 6. [in music.] The quantity of a long vowel, or a long note. இருமாத்திரை. 7. [in gram.] A long vowel, நெடில். 8. [in the Agamas.] The deity Siva--as illuminator of souls, சி வன். 9. Divinity, திவ்வியம். Wils. p. 293. GURU. 1. A kind of native arsenic,, பலண் டுறுகம். 11. [in medi. &c.] Blue vitriol, துருசி. 12. [in alchy.] A compound medicine, formed of different metals; phylosopher's powder, உலோகங்களை வேதிக்குங்சிந்தூரமுதலியவை. 13. [in chem.] Mercury, இரதம்.--Note. In the last three senses, the word Guru has its technical meanings, derived however from its literal meaning of precepter and director. 14. Brilliancy, lustre, effulgence, பிரகா சம். Wils. p. 31. The gracious or benign look of the guru on his disciple, dispelling sin, imparting spiritual wisdom, and preparing the soul for emancipation. குருகற்பனை, s. Precept or the guru-deemed sacred. குருசந்தானம், s. A regular succession of priests, or gurus. குருசம்பாவனை, s. Blessing or favor of the guru. 2. Worship or honor due to the guru. குருசம்பிரதாயம், s. Oral instruction in the secret meaning of the mantras, &c., handed down from generation to generation, in the line of the guru, and by him communicated confidentially to his advanced disciples. குருசன்னிதானம், s. The presence of the guru. குருசேடம், s. Remains of a guru's food--considered sacred, குருப்பிரசாதம். குருசேவை, s. Civilities, duties, worship, &c., paid to a guru, குருஉபசரணை. குருதக்கணை--குருதட்சிணை, s. Fees or presents to the guru, commonly in money, given with due homage, &c. குருதீட்சை--குருதீக்கை, s. The initiation of a disciple by a guru to certain privileges of his religion, or afterwards to a more advanced degree, குரூபதேசம். குருத்திரவியம், s. Property or treasure of the guru. குருத்துரோகம், s. Treachery towards a guru, or injury of one. குருநிந்தை, s. Indignity to the priest. குருத்துவம், s. Priesthood, or the dignity, power, honor, &c., of a guru, குருத்தன்மை. 2. Honor, respectability, கனம். Wils. p. 293. GURUTVA. குருபத்தி--குருவிசுவாசம், s. Dutiful love, piety, &c., towards the guru, குருவி னிடத்திலன்பு. குருபத்தினி--குருபன்னி, s. The wife of a guru, குருவின்மனைவி. குருபாரம்பரியம், s. Ancestral priesthood in regular succession; the lineage or genealogy of a guru,குருபாரம்பரை. குருபீடம், s. The dignified seat, or office of a guru, குருஸ்தானம். குருபுத்திரன், s. A son of a guru, குரு புதல்வன். 2. An obedient disciple, உண் மையானசீஷன். குருபூசை, s. Pujah or worship, offered to a guru, by an advanced disciple competent to do it, குருவுக்குச்செய்யுமாராதனை. 2. Food, &c., given to Brahmans, religious mendicants, &c., by the disciples of a deceased guru, in rememberence of him as deifled, இறந்துபோனகுருவைக்குறித்துச்செய் யும்பூசை. குருபோதனை, s. The instruction of the guru. குருப்பட்டம், s. The office, authority of dignity of a guru, குருத்துவம். குருப்பட்டம்பெற, inf. To receive priesty authority, ordination, &c. குருப்பட்டாபிஷேகம், s. The ordination of a guru. குருப்பிரசாதம், s. The favor, grace, or blessing of the guru; gift from the guru, குருவருள். 2. Remains of a guru's food, குருவுண்டசேஷம். குருமரியாதை, s. Reverence for the guru. குருமுகமாய்க்கேட்க--குருமுன்னிலை யாயறிய--குருவாக்கியமாய்க்கேட்க inf. To learn viva voce, so as to attain certainty in doubtful matters. குருமுறை, s. A guru's teaching, குரு சொல்லியமுறை. குருமுன்னிலையாய், In the presence of the guru, குருவின்முன்னிடம். 2. By means or favor of the guru, குருமூலம். குருமை, s. Dignity, superiority, பெ ருமை. குருமூர்த்தம், s. The manifestation of a deity as a guru for the instruction of disciples; especially spoken of Siva, குரு வடிவம். குருலிங்கசங்கமம், s. An aggregate of the spiritual guru--Siva under the phallic emblem--and the devotees of Siva, குருவுஞ் சிவமுந் திருக்கூட்டமும். குருமொழி--குருவசனம்--குருவாக்கியம் --குருவாக்கு, s. The precepts, instructions, &c., of a guru. குருவுக்குநாமம்வைக்கிறவன், s. One who out-schemes, and out-wits, his guru, teacher or superior. குருவுபதேசம்--குரூபதேசம்,s. The initiation of a disciple by the guru. சற்குரு, s. A divine guru, the heavenly teacher. குருசந்திரயோகம், s. The conjunction of Jupiter and the moon in the same sign--considered auspicious. குருசாரபலம், s. [in astrol.] Good and ill results, derived from the progress of the planet Jupiter through the signs, வியாழபலன். குருவாரம், s. Thursday, வியாழக்கிழ மை. குருக்கொடுக்க, inf. [prov.] To instigate, ஏவிவிட. 2. To persuade, incite, commonly to a bad action, கொடுமைசெய் யத்தூண்ட. 3. To assume to teach, give advice &c., in the presence of the learned, புத்திசொல்ல. குருக்கொள்ள, inf. To assume to teach, give advice, &c., above one's age. இராசநீதி குருக்கொண்டு முதிர்ந்தனையோ. Do you take upon you to teach jurisprudence? (பார.) குருதுரியம், s. [in the Agamas.] The highest degree in the சுத்தம் state of souls; that next to absorption. குருபதம், s. The bliss of the deity, சதானந்தம். 2. Liberation from births, and absorptiom in the deity, பிறவிநீக்கம். குருமுடிக்க, inf. To combine ingredients with medicines to make them active, or to neutralize poisonous qualities, &c., இரசவாதகுருமுடிக்க. குருகுலம், s. The Kuru dynasty; the patronymic is commonly applied to the sons and descendants of Dhrutarashtra, குருவமிசம். குருகுலத்தரசர்--குருகுலவேந்தர், s. Kings of the Kuru race. குருநிலம், s. The territory of the king Kuru. குருக்கேத்திரம்--குருக்ஷேத்திரம், s. The country near Delhi, the scene of the great battle between the Kurus and Pándavas, described in the Bharata. Wils. p. 242. KURUKSHETRA. குருக்கேத்திரன், s. The name of a king in mythology, ஓர்வீரன். குருவருடம், s. One of the nine portions or divisions of the central continent, or Jambu Dwipa, ஓர்கண்டம். See வருடம். குருநாள், s. The eighth lunar asterism, பூசம். குருநாடிவிதி, s. A treatise on the ten tubular vessels in the system, and for the ascertainment of diseases by feeling the pulse, நாடிச்சாத்திரம். குருபாலப்பிரபோதிகை, s. tiyācciyam (p. 238) s. (lit. the rejected time.) In astrological calculations a time of three and three-quarters to four Indian hours following the asterism that rules the day, and considered to be unlucky, &c., ஒவ்வொருநட்சத்திரத்திலுஞ்சுபகாரியங்களுக்குவிலக்கப் பட்டநேரம். 2. A leaving, forsaking, விலக் குகை. W. p. 387. TYAJYA. Juice and root of தைவிளை, which see. தையீனாப்புல்லுமில்லைமாசியீனாமரமுமில்லை...... There is no graminious plant, but ears in January, and no tree that does not blossom in february. தைக்குரக்கன், s. [prov.] Watching millet sown in January. தைச்சங்கிரமம், s. The entrance of the sun into Capricorn. See சங்கிரமம், சங்கி ராந்தி. தைச்செவ்வாய், s. [prov.] A Tuesday in January, auspicious. தைப்பிறப்பு, s. [com. தைமாதப்பிற ப்பு.] New year's day, astronomically; observed by boiling rice, to propitiate the favor of the sun, supposed to commence, at that time, his course northward. தைப்பிறை, s. The new moon as seen in January, observed to ascertain whether the year will be fruitful. தைப்பூசம், s. The day when the moon is in the பூசம், in January, being an auspicious time for eating the first rice, bathing, and taking oblations to the temple. தைப்பொங்கல், s. The festival of boiling rice in cow's milk. See தைப்பிறப்பு. தையறம், s. [prov.] The drying up of the rivers in January. 3)
நட்சத்திரம்
naṭcattiram (p. 268) --நக்ஷத்திரம், s. Star in general, தாரகைப்பொது. 2. Lunar constellations, நாண்மீன், of which there are twentyseven, forming the lunar Zodiac, with an extra mansion, having no stars of its own, but which taking parts of the contiguous asterisms makes the number twenty-eight. This intercalary asterism occures between the 21st and 22nd, and is used chiefly for astrological purposes. 3. The period during which the moon is passing through an asterism. W. p. 45. NAKSHATRA. The twenty-seven asterisms beginning with Aries are in order, as follows; 1. அசுபதி, or அச்சுவினி. 2. பரணி. 3. கார்த்திகை. 4. உரோகிணி. 5. மிருகசீரிடம், or மிருகசீர்ஷம். 6. ஆதிரை, or திருவாதிரை. 7. புநர்பூசம். 8. பூசம். 9. ஆயிலியம். 1. மகம். 11. பூரம். 12. உத்திரம். 13. அஸ்தம் or அத்தம். 14. சித்திரை. 15. சுவாதி or சோதி. 16. விசாகம். 17. அனுடம் or அனுஷம். 18. கேட்டை. 19. மூலம். 2. பூராடம். 21. உத்திராடம். 22. திருவோணம். 23. அவிட்டம். 24. சதயம். 25. பூரட்டாதி. 26. உத்திரட்டாதி. 27. இரேவதி. Each asterism consists of thirteen degrees and twenty minutes of the Zodiac. There is a particular star in each called யோகம் which serves as an index to the mansion. நட்சத்திரசக்கரம், s. பாலை

[in combin.] A class of plants. 1. As பாலைக்கு ருவி-- Note. The principal பாலை plants, and trees, are ஊசிப்பாலை, a plant, Periploca esculenta; 2. ஏழிலைம்பாலை. ஏழிலைப்பாலை, a tree, Echites scholaris, of which the Tamil and Sanscrit names are derived, from its having seven leaves around the stem; 3. காக்காய்ப் பாலை, a tree, Gelonium bifarium; 4. குட சப்பாலை--கொடிப்பாலை--கறிப்பாலை, a creeping plant, Asclepias volubilis; 5.வெட்பாலை, a plant, Nerium antidysentericum; also ஆடுதின்னாப்பாலை, திருநாமப்பாலை, நிலப்பாலை, பூப் பாலை, விழுப்பாலை, which see in their places. --The seven classes of airs are: செம்பாலை, படுமலைப்பாலை, செவ்வழிப்பாலை, அரும்பாலை, கொ டிப்பாலை, விளரிப்பாலை, மேற்செம்பாலை, which see. பாலைக்கருப்பொருள், s. Men, beasts, things, &c., the adjuncts of arid tracts. They are. 1. பாலைத்தெய்வம், the goddess, Durga, துர்க்கை. 2. பாலைக்குடிமகன், inhabitants, the வேடர், or hunter caste; 3. பாலைத்தலைவன் the chief, as காளை, 4. பா லைநிலத்தூர், the village, as குறும்பு; 5. பாலைநீர், well-water; 6. பாலைப்பண், the melody, as பஞ்சுரம்; 7. பாலைப்பறை, a small drum as துடி; 8. பாலைப்புள், the birds, as the dove, புறா; kite பருந்து; and eagle, கழுகு; 9. பாலைப்பூ, the flowers, as of பூளை, பாலை, and கள்ளி plants; 1. பாலைமரம், the trees as குரா, and மரா; 11. பாலைநிலமாக்கள் தொழில், occupation of the inhabitants-mostly plundering. கொள்ளையாடல்; 12. பாலைமாக்களூண், the food, plunder--on which they principally subsist; 13. பாலைவிலங்கு, the animals, a wild dog that chases tigers; 14. பாலையாழ், a lute of desert tracts. பாலைக்காடு, s. Paulghat district. பாலைக்காட்டுச்சோனை, s. An incessant rain, of four months in Paulghat. See சோனை. பாலைக்கிழத்தி, s. Durga. துர்க்கை. பாலைக்குருவி, s. A species of bird. பாலைநிலம்--பாலைவனம், s. A barren soil as பாலை, 2. பாலைப்பழம், s. The fruit of the பாலை tree. பாலைப்பாணி, s. Sweet juice of the பாலை fruit. 16) *
