One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. aṟku (p. 33) கிறேன், அற்கினேன், வேன், அற்க, v. n. To be permanent, to remain, endure, நிலைக்க. (p.) அற்காவியல்பிற்றுச்செல்வம் அதுபெற்றாலற்குப வாங்கேசெயல். Riches are not permanent in their nature; if you get them, do with them what will prove permanent; i. e. practise virtue. அற்கல், v. noun. Duration, permanency. அற்காமை, neg. v. noun. imai (p. 47) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To twinkle with the eyes, to wink, இமைகொட்ட. 2. (p.) To coruscate--as the stars, to glitter, emit light, ஒளிசெய்ய. இமையாநாட்டம் பெற்றிலமென்றார். (The terrestrial inhabitants) exclaimed we are not gifted with unwinking eyes (as the gods.) 19)

uṇr (p. 59) --உணரு, கிறேன், உணர்ந்தே ன், வேன், உணர, v. a. To be conscious, to feel mentally, to perceive, understand, comprehend, arrive at, or possess full and perfect knowledge, அறிய. 2. To discern, distinguish, பகுத்தறிய. 3. To think, reflect or consider, meditate, contemplate, நினைக்க. 4. To feel, perceive by the touch, பரிசித்தறிய. 5. To learn, acquire knowledge, கற்றறிய. 6. To become reconciled-as man and wife, be reunited after a love quarrel, ஊடறீர. 7. To become free from delusion, doubt, error, &c.--as in waking from sleep; recovering from languor; acquiring spiritual perception, &c., தெளிய. (p.) தெய்வப்புலவனுக்குநாவுணருஞ்சித்திரவோடாவிக்கு க்கையுணரும். The tongue of the inspired poet and the hand of the painter perform their functions intuitively. [prov.] உற்றுணரெங்களிலொருவன். One of us who have been initiated. (பாரதம்.) உணராமை, neg. v. noun. Stupor, want of perception, knowledge, feeling, &c., அறியாமை. 2. Insanity, intoxication, infatuation, bewilderment, உன்மத்தம். உணருமறிவு, s. Instinct, intuition. 2. Ready apprehension, cleverness. உணர்ந்தோர்--கற்றுணர்ந்தோர், s. The learned, persons of profound erudition, men of ability. உணர், v. noun. Feeling, perception, knowledge, intellect, உணர்வு. உணர்ச்சி, v. noun. Consciousness, feeling, intuition, perception, discernment, understanding, sensibility, knowledge, wisdom, judgment, experience, reason, learning, &c., acquiring knowledge, உணர்வு. என்காலிலேயுணர்ச்சியில்லை. My leg is devoid of feeling, affected by paralysis, &c. உணர்தல், v. noun. Being reconciled--as man and wife after a lovequarrel. ஊடலுணர்தல்புணர்தலிவைகாமங்கூடியார்பெற் றபயன். Disunion, reconciliation and the pleasures of love, those are the fruits of matrimony. (குறள்.) உணர்த்தி, s. [vul. prop. உணர்ச்சி.] Feeling. உணர்த்தியற்றவன், s. A man past feeling, one devoid of sensibility. உணர்த்தியுள்ளவன், s. A man of sensibility, one who is affected by the wants of others. உணர்வு, v. noun. Feeling, consciousness, intuition, perception, understanding, knowledge by means of the senses, உணர்கை. 2. Clear discernment, intellect, reason, தெளிவு. 3. Cessation from sleep, love quarrels, &c., ஊடலுந் துயிலுநீங்கல். 4. Acquiring of knowledge, learning, experience, acquaintance with science, &c., கற்றுணர்கை. 5. A sense, புலன். 6. Separation, நீங்கல். உணரவுணருமுணர்வுடையாரைப்புணரப்புணருமா மின்பம். To be united in friendship with the prudent who think of what they ought to think is productive of the highest felicity. (நாலடி.) உள்ளத்துணர்வுடையான். A man of great wisdom. உணர்வுகேடு, s. Forgetfulness, listlessness, inattention, உணர்ச்சியின்மை. 2. Want of understanding, அறிவீனம். நுண்ணுணர்வு, s. An acute perception. தேர்ந்தவுணர்வினன், s. A man of improved understanding. தளர்ந்தவுணர்வினன், s. A dull man, one slow of understanding. 114)

upāyam (p. 62) s. Means, contrivance, expedient, device, good or bad, skill in accomplishing an object, சூழ்ச்சி. 2. Stratagem, artifice, craft, shift, art, cunning, shuffling, intrigue, தந்திரம். 3. The means for bringing an enemy to terms, of which four are enumerated, viz.: 1. சாமம், conciliatory measures. 2. பேதம், sowing dissension. 3. தானம், gifts, presents. 4. தண் டம், chastisement, punishment (by war), அரசர்க்குரியவுபாயம். 4. [vul.] Smallness, சொ ற்பம். Wils. p. 16. UPAYA. உபாயக்காரன்--உபாயி, s. An artful person, a schemer, contriver, தந்திரக்காரன். உபாயஞ்சூழ, inf. To contrive, scheme. உபாயஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To give counsel. உபாயதந்திரம், s. Devices, craftiness, subtility. உபாயமானவிளையாட்டு, s. Artful cheating in play. உபாயம்பண்ண, inf. To adopt stratagems, to contrive, employ address, use means. உபாயவிலக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Artfully endeavoring to prevent an act, by representing the evil which will happen to one's self--as when a wife dissuades her husband from leaving her by declaring that, in case he does, she must die, ஓரலங்காரம். உபாயோபாயம், s. Various means or artifices. 2. Cunning for cunning in retaliation, &c. மோட்சம்பெறுமுபாயம்--மோட் சோபாயம், s. Means for obtaining eternal bliss. 52)

uyir (p. 63) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To live, revive, come to life--as one dead; to be restored to life or feeling--as a benumbed or injured limb, to be reanimated, &c., உயிரடைய. 2. (p.) To breathe, respire, மூச்செறிய. 3. To blow or move--as a soft wind; to become diffused--as odors, வீச. 4. v. a. To issue, emit fragrance, &c., exhale, eject, discharge, set at liberty, வி டுக்க. 5. To give birth to, yield, produce, ஈன. 6. To smell, மோக்க. அவள்கருவுயிர்த்தாள். She has borne a child. மருவுயிர்க்குநறுந்துளவு. The fragrant Tulasi (Ocimum sanctum), which emits odor. (பாரத.) உயிர்த்தெழ, inf. To rise to life, to be restored to life, be reanimated, உயிரடைந்தெழ. உயிர்ப்பன, s. Living creatures, சுவாசமுடையன. உயிர்ப்பிக்க, inf. To cause to live, raise, or restore to life, to revive, reanimate, resuscitate, பிழைப்பிக்க. உயிர்ப்பு, v. noun. Reanimation, revival, உயிர்க்கை. 2. s. Breath, respiration, சுவாசம். 3. Wind, air, காற்று. 4. (fig.) Good smell, சுகந்தம். (p.) நெட்டுயிர்ப்பெறிய--நெட்டுயிர்ப்பு வீங்க, inf. To fetch a long breath, to sigh. 22)

urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. Rules for making commentaries. There are five according to சதுரகராதி, viz.: 1. பதம். 2. பதப்பொருள். 3. வாக்கியம். 4. வினா. 5. விடை. உரையிற்கோடல், v. noun. Additions to a text by a commentator--one of the உத்தி. உரையெழுத, inf. To write a commentary. உரைவன்மை, s. Eloquence, oratorical power, சாதுரியப்பேச்சு. 2. Forcible language that cannot be controverted, சொற்றிட்பம். உரைவாசகம், s. Prose composition, discourse, language. பாட்டுமுரையும், s. A poem with commentary. திருவள்ளுவருரை, s. Heartiness, energy, earnestness, பிடிவாதம்; [ex உறு, urgent.] உறுதிகொள்ள, inf. To be confirmed. உறுதிசெய்ய--உறுதிபண்ண, inf. To confirm, corroborate, benefit, &c., பலஞ்செய்ய. 2. To execute a title deed, bond, &c.--as a contracting party, உடன்படிக்கையெழுத. 3. To believe firmly, persuade one's self, நிச்சயிக்க. உறுதிசொல்ல, inf. To assure, speak firmly, pledge one's word, &c., திரமாகச்சொல்ல. 2. To inspire hope, to console, நம்பிக்கைசொல்ல. 3. To give good moral advice, admonish, நற்போதனை செய்ய. உறுதிச்சீட்டு--உறுதிப்பத்திரம், s. A bond, a written contract, a title deed. உறுதிச்சுற்றம், s. The principal attendants on a king; they are five, viz.: நட்பாளர், அந்தணாளர், மடைத்தொழிலர், மருத்துவக்கலைஞர், நிமித்திகப்புலவர். உறுதிச்சொல், s. A word of assurance, நிச்சயமொழி. 2. A word of advice, நல்லுபதேசம். 3. An admonition, a warning, கண்டிப்பு. உறுதிபண்ண, inf. To confirm, to corroborate. உறுதிபூசுதல், s. The sacrament of confirmation among the Romanists. உறுதிபெறுதல், v. noun. Obtaining firmness of mind. உறுதிப்பட, inf. To be confirmed, assured, to be firmly established in a course of conduct, திடப்பட. உறுதிப்படுத்த, inf. To confirm in a religious sense, to corroborate, establish, பலப்படுத்த. 2.
