The six தொழில், or actions, appropriate to the holy land, or India proper, are: 1. உழவு. ploughing, tillage. 2. தொழில், workmanship, manufacture. 3. வரைவு, marriage, with appropriate ceremonies. 4. வா ணிகம், traffic. 5. வீச்சை, வித்தை. arts, science, literature. 6. சிற்பம். architecture. The six தொழில் or duties and occupations appropriate to the four castes are: 1. To அந்தணர், brahmans: 1. ஓதல், study and recitation of the Vedas. 2. ஓதுவித்தல், teaching the Veda. 3. வேட்டல், performing daily and special rites tending the sacred fire. &c. 4. வேட்பித்தல், managing the performance of rites for others, &c. 5. ஈதல், distributing alms, supporting religious mendicants. 6. ஏற்றல், receiving alms, and donations from worthy persons. II. To அரசர், the royal or military race: 1. ஓதல், studying. 2. வேட்டல், performing rites. 3. ஈதல், bestowing alms, and donations. 4. உலகோம்பல், cherishing, protecting, governing the land. 5. படைப்பயிற்றல், training or disciplining armies. 6. பொருதல், carrying on war. III.
