iru (p. 50) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To sit, sit down, உட்கார. 2. To live, be alive, exist, உயிர்வாழ. 3. To abide, reside, dwell, sojourn or stay in an appropriate place--as men in houses--beasts in the forest--fishes in water, &c., தங்க. 4. To be, wait, remain, be present, be at hand, சமுகத்திலிருக்க. 5. To be in reserve, in store, to remain--as an overplus, மீந்திருக்க. 6. To be ready, prompt, waiting for any duty or project, to be on the point of acting, going, &c., ஆயத்தமாயிருக்க. 7. To settle in a place, become fixed, established, நிலைபெற. 8. To last, remain, continue, endure, நீடி க்க. (c.) With என்று prefixed, it expresses expectation, desire, &c.--as வருவானென்றி ருக்கிறோம். We expect him. In the past tense with the gerund of a verb it serves to express the plu-perfect tense of that verb--as வந்திருந்தான். He had come. The gerund is often used with the locative and expresses the idea of procession--as நகரத்திலிருந்துநீங்கினான். He departed from the city. Sometimes இருந்து is an expletive (அசைச்சொல்)--as எழுந்திருந்தான். He is risen. இரு இரு. Wait, wait. 2. Sit down. இருக்கச்சொல்லியும்போய்விட்டான். Although I told him to wait, he went away. இருக்கட்டும் இருக்கட்டும். Let it be (emphatically). இருக்கிறதவ்வளவுதான். That is all there is. இருந்தல்லவோபடுக்கவேண்டும். Is it not necessary to sit before lying down? a phrase used to express the necessity of caution or deliberation in any pursuit. இருந்தாற்போலே செத்துப்போனான். He died unexpectedly. இருந்திருந்துகாரியமிறுகிக்கொண்டது. The case has at length assumed a serious aspect. மீன்பிடிக்க இருக்கிறான். He is about to go afishing. அவனின்னமிருக்கிறானா? Is he still alive? Is he still there, not gone yet? காரியமிப்படியிருக்கிறது. Such is the state of affairs. அந்தத்துரையிருக்கிறநாளிலே. During the period of that governor. நெடுநாளிருப்பார்கள். They will live long. 2. They will remain here long. அதுமெய்யென்றிருந்தேன். I thought it was true. அவனிருந்தாகிறதென்ன? அவனிருந்தும்பயனெ ன்ன? Of what use is he? இருக்கை, v. noun. Sitting, உட் கார்ந்திருக்கை. 2. Residence, abode, dwelling, வாசஸ்தலம். 4. The appropriate place of any person or thing, the place where a person or thing is established, உரியவிடம். 5. A seat, பீடம். 6. Surplus, balance in hand, remainder of cash in hand after an expenditure, கையிருப்பு. 7. Money in reserve, amount in a treasury, பொக்கசத்திருப்பு. 8. Remaining commodities, residue, மீந்திருப் பவை. 9. Stores, merchandise, wares, சரக்கிருப்பு. அவனிருந்த இருப்பிலே சம்பாதித்துக்கொண்டா ன். He acquired his wealth in one place; i. e. without running hither and thither. உன்னிடத்திலின்ன மிருப்பென்ன? How much still remains in your hand (in money or goods)? அவனிடத்திலிருப்பிருக்கிறது. tāy (p. 234) s. Mother, அன்னை. 2. Dam, female parent of animals in general, விலங்கின் தாய். 3. [in combination.] A maternal aunt, &c. (See சிறியதாய், சிறியதாய்முறை and பெரியதாய்.) 4. Origin, that which is primitive, chief, or principal, முதன்மை. (c.) தாய், is also applied to five kinds of nurses. 1. பாராட்டுத்தாய். 2. ஊட்டுந்தாய். 3. முலைத்தாய். 4. கைத்தாய். 5. செவிலித்தாய். which see. Another five-fold classification is given of persons held in similar esteem with mothers. 1. அரசன்தேவி, king's wife. 2. குருவின்தேவி, wife of the guru. 3. அண் ணன்தேவி, elder brother's wife. 4. தன்தே வியைஈன்றவள், wife's mother. 5. தன்னைஈன் றவள், one's own mother. தாய்ப்பொன்னிலும்மாப்பொன்எடுக்கிறவன். He who would steal one-twentieth even of his mother's gold--a maxim on the thievishness of goldsmiths. தாய்முகங்காணாதபிள்ளை. A child early bereaved of its mother. தாய்முலைப்பாலிலும்உப்புப்பார்க்கிறவன். One who tries even his mother's milk to see if it is not salt; i. e. a distrustful, mistrustful, sceptical person. தாய்சொற்சிறந்தவாசகமில்லை. No word is like that of a mother. (Avv.) தாயினும்அன்பர்கர்த்தர். The Divine Being more loving than a mother. (Christ. usage.) தாய்க்குள்ளதுமகளுக்கு. As the mother, so the daughter. தாயாடு, s. A dam. தாயேடு--தாயோலை, s. nāpi (p. 273) s. A powerful vegetable poison the root of a plant said to be from Nepaul. W. p. 731. VATSANAB'HA.--To this there colors; 1. அந்தணநாபி, the brahmanical, white; 2. சத்திரியநாபி, the kingly, red; 3. வைசியநாபி, the merchants, blue; 4. சூத் திரநாபி, the laborers, black. வச்சநாபி, s. [improp. பச்சநாபி.] A strong poison said to be procured from the Acorus Calamus, வசம்பு, when very old and after frequent transplanting. Some say it is the root of the தான்றி plant. வச்சநாபியையுப்புப்பார்ப்பார்களா. Do people taste the நாபி poison?--a mode of asseriing they do not. 110)

nekku (p. 279) கிறது, நெக்கினது, ம், நெக்க, v. n. To be relaxed, to loosen, as நெகு. நெக்கு, v. noun. Soaked as the ground after rain; relaxing, dissolving, disjointing, losing tenacity, நெகிழ்ச்சி. 2. See நெக்கு. v. a. நெக்குடைதல், v. noun. Melting, as the heart in love, மனம்உருகுதல். நெக்குவிடுதல், v. noun. Becoming loose or relaxed, giving place as the earth, to roots, &c. நெட்டிருப்புப்பாரைக்குநெக்குவிடாப்பாறை. To move with celerity or velocity, to hasten or scamper away, வேகமாய்ச்செல்ல 3. To be scattered, to disperse, disappear, சிதற. 4. To be in a hurry, to be over-hasty, அவசரப்பட, (c.) 5. [vul.] To suffer, வருந்த. பறக்கப்பார்க்கிறார். He is aspiring to things above him. ஏன்பறக்கிறாய். Why are you in a hurry? Why are you over-anxious? அடித்தஅடியில்பிள்ளைபறந்துவிட்டது. The child suffered much by beating. பறக்கடிக்க, inf. [com. for பறக்கஅடி க்க.] To cause to fly, to scatter. see சிதறடிக்க. பறக்கவிட, inf. To let fly, as a bird, or a paper kite. 2. To defeat, to ruin. 3. To tease one by incessant importunity. பறக்கிறதூள், s. Flying dust, a cloud of dust. பறந்தடிக்க, inf. [prov.] To be too busy, too much hurried, full of eares, &c. பறந்தலைய--பறந்துதிரிய, inf. To go about rapidly being greedy as birds or prey for food, &c., or an avaricious person. பறந்துபோக, inf. To go quickly. 2. To be dispersed, to be utterly gone, as property disease or sin. பறந்துவிழ, inf. To fall on with avidity, in taking food. பறப்பன, appel. n. Flying, darting, flight; haste, hurry, quickness, speed, as the verb. 2. Anxiety, care, concern, business, கவ்வை. பறப்பன், s. A hasty person. (R.) பறப்பிலேதிரிய, inf.
