(சது.)--The seven principal sounds or notes in the vocal and instrumental music of the Hindus are called, சுரம், in singing, and நரம்பு, on stringed instruments; they are, 1. குரல், the guttural sound, the sound coming from the throat, மிடற்றாற்குரல். 2. துத்தம், the second tone of the gamut, or நி modulated by the tongue, நாவினாற்றுத்தம். 3. கைக்கிளை, the sound caused by the palate, அண்ணத்தாற்கைக்கிளை. 4. உழை, the cerebral, or the sound coming from the head, சிரத்தாலுழை. 5. இளி, that which proceeds from the forehead, நெற்றியாலிளி. 6. விளரி, the pectoral, or that which proceeds from the breast, நெஞ்சால்விளரி. 7. தாரம், that from the nose, or nasal, மூக் காற்றாரம்.--These sounds, they compare: 1. With those of animals--as that of a peacock, a bull, a sheep, &c. 2. With the different tastes of milk, honey, &c. 3. With the different scents of jasmin, nymph&oe;a, &c.--The letters (அட்சரம்.) by which they express these notes are as follow: 1. ஆஅ. 2. ஈஇ. 3. ஊஉ. 4. ஏஎ. 5. ஐஇ. 6. ஓஒ. 7. ஔஉ.--The time or measure, (மாத்திரை,) of these notes is as follows:The 1st note குரல் contains 4 measures நான்கு குரல். 2d துத்தம் contains 4 measures நான்குதுத்தம். 3d கைக்கிளை ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுகைக்கிளை. 4th உழை ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுழை. 5th இளி ,, 4 ,, நான்கிளி. 6th விளரி ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுவிளரி. 7th தாரம் ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுதாரம். From the combinations of these notes or sounds, are formed seven different kinds of airs or tunes; (பாலை) viz.: 1. செம்பாலை, or the air in which the first note is doubled, குரலேகுரல். 2. படுமலைப் பாலை, the air in which the second and first notes are compounded, துத்தமேகுரல். 3. செவ்வழிப்பாலை, the air in which the third and the first notes are compounded, கைக்கிளையேகுரல். 4. அரும்பாலை, the air in which the fourth and the first notes are compounded, உழையேகுரல். 5. கொடி ப்பாலை, the air in which the fifth and first notes are compounded, இளியேகுரல். 6. விளரிப்பாலை, the air in which the sixth and first notes are compouned, விளரியே குரல். 7. மேற்செம்பாலை, the air in which the seventh and first notes are compounded, தாரமேகுரல்.--The differences of these tunes are as follow; viz.: 1. கொ டிப்பாலை, a tune higher than செம்பாலை. 2. விளரிப்பாலை and மேற்செம்பாலை, tunes higher than கொடிச்செம்பாலை.--The three different parts in music are: 1. மந்தவிசை, bass, or the lowest pitch--also called, மந்தரம் or காகுளி. 2. மத்திமலிசை, tenor or medium--also called, மதுரம் or சமன். 3. தாரவிசை, treble or the highest pitch-also called, உச்சம் or வல்லிசை.--The different parts are not sung together, but one after another in succession--மந்த விசை, takes its pitch in the key note of the bass--the மத்திமவிசை, in the fifth-and the உச்சம், in the octave. The term is also applied to the several notes or sounds of the octave--also called சுரம்-as the first சுரம், the second சுரம், &c., and the whole are called the சரளி or gamut. இசைகேடு, s. Dissonance, discord, want of harmony, சுரபேதம். 2. Dishonor, disgrace, ill-fame, அவகீர்த்தி. 3. Want of opportunity, inconvenience, inauspiciousness--as of a day, ஒத்துக்கொள் ளாமை. 4. [prov.] Reduced state, emaciated state, இடைந்துபோனநிலைமை. இசைகொள்ள, inf. To be renowned, கீர்த்திபெற. இசைக்குழல், s. A musical windinstrument, ஊதுகுழல். இசைத்தமிழ், s. One of the three kinds of Tamil odes, or other poetry adapted to song--also the various changes made to accommodate language to music, முத்தமிழினொன்று. இசைத்திரிபு, s. A change of tune by mistake, ஓசைப்பிறழ்வு. 2. Variation in music, இசைமாறுகை. 3. A different enunciation of the same terms, according to the different senses they are intended to convey, இசையறுத்துக்கூறுகை-as செம்பொன்பதின்கழஞ்சு, may be செம்பு ஒன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the copper is nine கழஞ்சு--or செம்பொன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the fine gold is ten கழஞ்சு. So குறும்பரம்பு may be குறும்பர் அம்பு, the army of territorial chiefs-or குறும் பரம்பு, a short board used for smoothing ploughed fields. இசைநாள், s. The twenty-fifth, also the twenty-sixth lunar mansions, பூரட்டாதி and உத்திரட்டாதி. இசைநிறை, s. [in poetry.] The use of a letter, or word to fill the measure-an expletive, ஓரிடைச்சொல்; as ஏஎ யிவ ளொருத்திபேடி. Heh! This is a hermaphrodite. இசைநூல், s. The science of music. இசைப்பாட்டு, s. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. cantiraṉ (p. 159) s. Chandra, the moon as a planet or deity, திங்கள். (c.) 2. [in combination.] A pre-eminent or dignified personage--as இராமச்சந்திரன். சந்திரனைப்பார்த்துநாய்குலைத்தாற்போல. As if the dog had barked at the moon, i. e., mere chatter to no purpose. சந்திரகணம், s. One of the four auspicious feet with which to begin a poem --consisting of one நிரை and two நேர். See கணம். (p.) சந்திரகதி--சந்திரபுத்தி, s. The daily motion of the moon. சந்திரகலை, s. The phases of the moon. 2. The breath of the left nostril. (c.) See சூரியகலை. சந்திரகாந்தம்--சந்திரகாந்தச்சிலை, s. A kind of mineral gem, the moon-stone, said to emit moisture, when placed in the moon-light; and believed by some to be a congelation of the moon's rays. See சூரியகாந்தம். சந்திரகாந்திப்பூ, s. A moon-flower, a flower which turns towards the moon. சந்திரகாவி, s. A kind of radish color made from the செநதுருக்கம் flower or Bastard saffron. Carthamus tinctorius. Ains. v. 2. p. 364. 2. A reddish ochre, செங்காவிமண். 3. A kind of red cloth, ஓர்வகைப்புடவை. (c.) சந்திரகாவிப்பட்டு, s. Silk of a red colour. சந்திரகிரகணம், s. A lunar eclipse. See கிரகணம். சந்திரகும்பம், s. A sacred water-pot dedicated to the moon. See கும்பம். சந்திராதித்தர்--சந்திரசூரியர், s. The sun and moon. (c.) சந்திராதித்தருள்ளவரைக்கும். As long as the sun and moon exist. சந்திரசூடன்--சந்திரசேகரன், s. Siva, the moon crested. சந்திரதரிசனம், s. The first sight of the New Moon on an auspicious evening.-Note. If the time be not auspicious, the sight is avoided. 2. The ceremony of showing either the crescent or full moon to a child, for the first time, on an auspicious evening. சந்திரப்பிரவை, s. The moon's rays, moon-light. 2. [loc.] A sect for an image on festival occasions. 3. [com. சந்திரப்பிறை.] A female ornament. See சூரியப்பிரவை. சந்திரநாகம், s. A black serpent, இராகு; the dragon's head or ascending node, in Astronomy. சந்திரபீசம், s. The cochineal insect. சந்திரபுடம், s. Moon's longitude. சந்திரமண்டலம், s. The orb or disk of the moon, சந்திரவிம்பம். 2. The moon's halo, பரிவேடம். 3. [in the human body.] The head and the shoulders. (p.) சந்திரமத்திம்புத்தி, s. [in astron.] The mean motion of the moon in a fixed time --as a day, an hour, &c. சந்திரமானம், s. [in astron.] A calculation made from the motion of the moon in its orbit. See சாந்திரமானம். சந்திரமந்தோச்சம், s. [in astron.] The moon's apsis. சந்திரமுருகு, s. An ear ornament shaped like the crescent moon. (c.) சந்திரமோலி--சந்திரமௌலி, s. Siva, the moon crested. There are other compounds--as திங்கண்மோலி, மதிமோலி, &c. சந்திரரேகை--சந்திரலேகை, s. The moon's digits. சந்திரரோகம், s. A kind of leprosy, [in the gospels] lunacy, ஓர்குட்டம். (c.) சந்திரலவணம், s. A medicinal salt, Rock salt, இந்துப்பு. சந்திரலோகம், s. The region or sphere of the moon. சந்திரவட்டம், s. One of the three umbrellas of Argha. சந்திரவட்டக்குடை, s. A large white umbrella used in processions. சந்திரவருஷம்--சந்திரனாண்டு, s. Lunar year. சந்திரவமிசம், s. The lunar race, the race of kings from Chandra, his son Buddha, his son Purúravas, &c. சந்திரவலயம்--சந்திரவளையம், s. [prov.] A brass ring filled with pebbles and used as a small tabour. They are held one on each thumb, by public singers, கைச்சிலம்பு. சந்திரவாதம், s. A system of religion in which the moon is god. சந்திரவிம்பம், s. takkaṇam (p. 220) --தக்கிணம், s. South, தெற்கு. 2. Right, the right side, வலப்பக்கம். (சது.) See தட்சணம். தக்கணகோளார்த்தம், s. Southern hemisphere. தக்கணதுருவம், s. South pole. தக்கணநாடு, s. The Deccan, or southern country. See டக்கண். தக்கணமத்திமசக்கரபூமி, s. South temperate zone. (Modern.) தக்கணமந்தோச்சம், s. Perihelion. தக்கணாட்சம், s. taṟ (p. 230) [prop. தத்.] A Sanscrit prefix in Tamil, the த் being changed to ற் before க், ச், ப். தற்காலம், s. The exact precise time of an action or occurrence, the expected time, the given time being, நிகழ்காலம். 3. Coincidence in time, அக்காலம். 4. [astron.] A given time for which calculation is made.--Note. This word is often used synonymously with தற்காலசுத்தபுடம், which see. தற்காலகிரகநிலை, s. Planetary positions at a given time. 2. The horoscope at the moment of birth. (A term used in nativities.) தற்காலசுத்தபுடம், s. The true longitude or position of a planet at a fixed time. தற்காலமத்திமம், s. The mean longitude at a given time. தற்காலவிலை, s. The price at the time. தற்காலவிலைப்படிதருவேன். I will give as the price may be at the time. தற்காலிக்க, inf. [in astron.] To determine longitude, &c., for a given time, to make a reduction in the elements of calculation of the time given or sought. தற்சணம்--தச்சணம்--தட்சணம்--த க்ஷணம், s. The very moment, not a moment intervening, உடனே. 2. The present moment, அந்தக்ஷணம். தற்சம்ம, s. Words from the Sanscrit used in Tamil, or any of the other cognate languages, without change--as கமலம், the letters of which are the same in Sanscrit and Tamil, but சக்தி in Tamil, is சக்தி in Sanscrit. (சது.) தற்சமயம், s. The particular juncture, the exact moment required, அச்சமயம். 2. The best opportunity, a special season or juncture, உற்றசமயம். தற்பதம், s. Deity, கடவுள். (சது.) தற்பரம்--தற்பரன், s. Absolute deity independent of agencies, assumed energies or operations; i. e. deity quiescent or the male principle in the deity, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். தற்பரை, s. tungkam (p. 245) s. Height, elevation, upward tendency, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Dignity, exaltedness, neatness, பெருமை. (சது.) 3. Superior apsis, the apogee or aphelion of a planet, மந் தோச்சம். W. p. 379. TUNGA. துங்கப்பீலிக்குடை, s. An umbrella from the feathers of the lofty peacock. துங்கமந்தோச்சம், s. [in astron.] Aphelion of a heavenly body; [ex மந்தம், anomaly, et உச்சம், the meridian.] துங்கமத்திமபுத்தி, s. Mean daily motion of moon's apogee. துங்கன், s. An eminent man, உயர்ந் தோன். 2. (in Hindu astronomy.) The apogee of the moon, practically, the longitude of the apogee. As such, it is an element for equating the moon's place, மந்தோச்சம். 12) *

I have come to you for an asylum, or I have joined your party. முதற்பட்சம்--உத்தமபட்சம். The first kind, the best kind. இரண்டாம்பட்சம். Of the secondary class; an inferior kind. மத்திமபட்சம். Of a middling quality. கிடையாதபட்சத்துக்கு. In case it is not to be got. அப்படிநடக்கிறபட்சத்தில். In case it happen thus. பட்சங்காட்ட, inf. To show kindness. பட்சதாபம், s.
