aḷ (p. 33) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To measure, fathom, expore, estimate, அளவுசெய்ய. 2. To apportion, mete out, measure out, பங்கிட. 3. To extend, reach, எட்ட. விசும்பளந்தாண்டுநின்றிடுஞ்சிகரியை. The turrets which reached to the sky. மரக்காலைப்பாய்ச்சியளக்கிறான். He measures thrusting in the marcal; i. e. into the heap. பறைவெட்டியளக்கிறான்--பறைதட்டியளக்கிறான். He measures by striking off the excess of the grain. ஐயனளந்தபடி. As God allots. அளக்கை--அளத்தல், v. noun. Measuring. அளபு, v. noun. Measurement, அ ளவு. 2. The lengthening of the sound of a letter, அளபெடை. அளபெடுக்க, inf. To lengthen a letter, whether vowel or consonant, by the insertion of another short letter or mute, as the case may be, for the sake of the poetry, and sometimes for euphony, as, கழூஉ for கழு; மாத்திரைமிக் கொலிக்க. அளபெடை, v. noun. The lengthening of a letter chiefly for the sake of the verse. There are two ways of doing this. 1. உயிரளபெடை, the addition of a short vowel to a long one, either in the beginning, middle, or end of a word--as ஈஇ கை, gift--for ஈகை; படாஅ கை, banner--for படாகை; and குழூஉ, multitude--for குழு. Again this is divided into இயற்கையளபெடை, and செயற்கையளபெ டை. 2. ஒற்றளபெடை, the lengthening of the mutes, ங், ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன், வ், ய், ல், ள், and ஃ by being repeated twice either in the middle or end of a word when they are placed after one or two short syllables, as அரங்கம், முரஞ்ஞ்சு, மண்ண்ணு, அம்ம்பு, கொள்ள்க, விலஃஃகி. அளப்பம்--அளப்பு, v. noun. Measuring, அளக்கை. 2. (fig.) Fate, destiny, ஊழ். 3. Needless repetition, chatter, அலப்பு. 4. Expressing dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்கை. வனிதையரளப்பிலர், The damsels are without number. அளப்பளக்க, inf. To repeat, use needless repetitions, prate, chatter, அ லப்ப. 2. To complain, grumble, express dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்க. அளப்பன், s. [prop. அலப்பன்.] A babbler, prater, chatterer, வீணாகப்பேசு வோன். 13)

icai (p. 45) s. A sound, noise, ஒலி. 2. Praise, புகழ். 3. A word, சொல். 4. A tune, melody, மிடற்றாற்பிறக்குமிசை. 5. Instrumental music, நரம்பிற்பிறக்குமிசை. 6. Sound, harmony in music, a harmonious or musical sound, tone, note, &c., இசைப்பாட்டு. Also a term common to the different parts in music. (p.) (சது.)--The seven principal sounds or notes in the vocal and instrumental music of the Hindus are called, சுரம், in singing, and நரம்பு, on stringed instruments; they are, 1. குரல், the guttural sound, the sound coming from the throat, மிடற்றாற்குரல். 2. துத்தம், the second tone of the gamut, or நி modulated by the tongue, நாவினாற்றுத்தம். 3. கைக்கிளை, the sound caused by the palate, அண்ணத்தாற்கைக்கிளை. 4. உழை, the cerebral, or the sound coming from the head, சிரத்தாலுழை. 5. இளி, that which proceeds from the forehead, நெற்றியாலிளி. 6. விளரி, the pectoral, or that which proceeds from the breast, நெஞ்சால்விளரி. 7. தாரம், that from the nose, or nasal, மூக் காற்றாரம்.--These sounds, they compare: 1. With those of animals--as that of a peacock, a bull, a sheep, &c. 2. With the different tastes of milk, honey, &c. 3. With the different scents of jasmin, nymph&oe;a, &c.--The letters (அட்சரம்.) by which they express these notes are as follow: 1. ஆஅ. 2. ஈஇ. 3. ஊஉ. 4. ஏஎ. 5. ஐஇ. 6. ஓஒ. 7. ஔஉ.--The time or measure, (மாத்திரை,) of these notes is as follows:The 1st note குரல் contains 4 measures நான்கு குரல். 2d துத்தம் contains 4 measures நான்குதுத்தம். 3d கைக்கிளை ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுகைக்கிளை. 4th உழை ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுழை. 5th இளி ,, 4 ,, நான்கிளி. 6th விளரி ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுவிளரி. 7th தாரம் ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுதாரம். From the combinations of these notes or sounds, are formed seven different kinds of airs or tunes; (பாலை) viz.: 1. செம்பாலை, or the air in which the first note is doubled, குரலேகுரல். 2. படுமலைப் பாலை, the air in which the second and first notes are compounded, துத்தமேகுரல். 3. செவ்வழிப்பாலை, the air in which the third and the first notes are compounded, கைக்கிளையேகுரல். 4. அரும்பாலை, the air in which the fourth and the first notes are compounded, உழையேகுரல். 5. கொடி ப்பாலை, the air in which the fifth and first notes are compounded, இளியேகுரல். 6. விளரிப்பாலை, the air in which the sixth and first notes are compouned, விளரியே குரல். 7. மேற்செம்பாலை, the air in which the seventh and first notes are compounded, தாரமேகுரல்.--The differences of these tunes are as follow; viz.: 1. கொ டிப்பாலை, a tune higher than செம்பாலை. 2. விளரிப்பாலை and மேற்செம்பாலை, tunes higher than கொடிச்செம்பாலை.--The three different parts in music are: 1. மந்தவிசை, bass, or the lowest pitch--also called, மந்தரம் or காகுளி. 2. மத்திமலிசை, tenor or medium--also called, மதுரம் or சமன். 3. தாரவிசை, treble or the highest pitch-also called, உச்சம் or வல்லிசை.--The different parts are not sung together, but one after another in succession--மந்த விசை, takes its pitch in the key note of the bass--the மத்திமவிசை, in the fifth-and the உச்சம், in the octave. The term is also applied to the several notes or sounds of the octave--also called சுரம்-as the first சுரம், the second சுரம், &c., and the whole are called the சரளி or gamut. இசைகேடு, s. Dissonance, discord, want of harmony, சுரபேதம். 2. Dishonor, disgrace, ill-fame, அவகீர்த்தி. 3. Want of opportunity, inconvenience, inauspiciousness--as of a day, ஒத்துக்கொள் ளாமை. 4. [prov.] Reduced state, emaciated state, இடைந்துபோனநிலைமை. இசைகொள்ள, inf. To be renowned, கீர்த்திபெற. இசைக்குழல், s. A musical windinstrument, ஊதுகுழல். இசைத்தமிழ், s. One of the three kinds of Tamil odes, or other poetry adapted to song--also the various changes made to accommodate language to music, முத்தமிழினொன்று. இசைத்திரிபு, s. A change of tune by mistake, ஓசைப்பிறழ்வு. 2. Variation in music, இசைமாறுகை. 3. A different enunciation of the same terms, according to the different senses they are intended to convey, இசையறுத்துக்கூறுகை-as செம்பொன்பதின்கழஞ்சு, may be செம்பு ஒன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the copper is nine கழஞ்சு--or செம்பொன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the fine gold is ten கழஞ்சு. So குறும்பரம்பு may be குறும்பர் அம்பு, the army of territorial chiefs-or குறும் பரம்பு, a short board used for smoothing ploughed fields. இசைநாள், s. The twenty-fifth, also the twenty-sixth lunar mansions, பூரட்டாதி and உத்திரட்டாதி. இசைநிறை, s. [in poetry.] The use of a letter, or word to fill the measure-an expletive, ஓரிடைச்சொல்; as ஏஎ யிவ ளொருத்திபேடி. Heh! This is a hermaphrodite. இசைநூல், s. The science of music. இசைப்பாட்டு, s. A melody, tune, song, காந்தாரம். இசைமடந்தை, s. Sarasvati, the wife of Brahma; the goddess of speech, of music, fame, praise, &c., சரச்சுவதி. (p.) இசையுள்ளான், s. A man of fame or praise. இசையெச்சம், s. [in grammar.] Ellipsis or omission of a word, சொல் லெச்சம். இசையெடுக்க, inf. To pitch or begin a tune. இசைவல்லோர்--இசைவாணர். s. Proficients in music, சங்கீதபாடகர். 2. Heavenly choristers, கந்தருவர். 39)

imai (p. 47) s. The eye-lid, கண்ணிமை. 2. A twinkle, twinkling of the eye, கண் ணிமைப்பொழுது. 3. (p.) A small or minute thing, a particle, அற்பம். 4. A bear, கரடி. 5. A peacock, மயில். கண்ணிமைகைந்நொடியளவேமாத்திரை. The time of a twinkling of the eye, or snapping of the finger is the duration of a மாத்திரை. இமைகொட்ட, inf. To twinkle, இமைக்க. இமைக்குழிவு, s. A hollow formed within the eye-lid, causing acute pain. இமையவர்--இமையோர், s. The gods who never sleep nor wink, வான வர். (p.) இமையவர்வேந்தன், s. Indra the king of the gods, இந்திரன். இமையாட, inf. To twinkle--as the eyes. இமையில், s. Garuda--the watchful bird that never shuts its eyes--the vehicle of Vishnu, கருடன். (p.) 18)

iracam (p. 48) s. Flavor, relish; what is tasteful, agreeable, palatable, delicious; taste in general, good or bad--also the six flavors. (See சுவை.) 2. Sweetness, இனிமை. 3. Sweet juice of fruits, &c., vegetable juice in general, சாறு. 4. Mercury, quicksilver, hydrargyrum, பாதரசம். 5. (p.) One of the juices of the body, சத்ததாதுவினொன்று. (See தாது.) It corresponds more with chyle than any other, but probably it is fanciful. 6. Pepper-water made of several ingredients, மிளகுநீர். 7. [in rhetoric.] The passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry, வீரமுதலியவெண்சுவை. Of these eight are given; viz.: 1. வீரம் or வீரியம், courage. 2. அச்சம், பயம், or பயானகம், fear, terror. 3. இழிப்பு, விபற்சம், குற்சை, அருவரு ப்பு, abominating, loathing at or disgusting. 4. வியப்பு or அற்புதம், wonder, surprise, astonishment. 5. காமம், சிங்காரம், சிருங்காரம், love, sexual love. 6. அவலம் or கருணை, acute sensibility, weakness, tenderness, mercy, pity, clemency. 7. உருத்திரம், கோ பம், இரௌத்திரம், பெருங்கோபம், warlike fury, wrath, displeasure, rage. 8. நகை, பெரு நகை or ஆசியம், laughter, mirth, risibility, great or intense laughter, laughing in contempt. By some, சாந்தம், tranquillity, equanimity, peace, abstraction or the stoicism of the ascetics; and by others வற்சலம், parental tenderness are given as a ninth meaning; இரசம் is added at pleasure with the loss in some cases of its initial-as வீராசம், இழிப்பிரசம், &c. Wils. p. 697. RASA. இரசகந்தாயம், s. Tribute, the fatness of the earth. இரசகந்தாயமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak pleasingly. இரசகருப்பூரம், s. Muriate of mercury, ஓர்மருந்து. இரசகுண்டு, s. [prop. இரசக்குண் டு.] A globular glass filled with mercury as a decoration at weddings, &c., also as a charm. இரசகுளிகை--இரசமாத்திரை, s. A quick-silver pill employed in medicine, இரசத்தினாற்செய்தமாத்திரை. 2. [in alchemy.] A pill feigned to be used by a class of persons called சித்தர், now in the world of Indra, who thereby perform supernatural actions--as கமனஞ்செய்கை, or passing through the air to any desired place, சித்தர்குளிகை. இரசக்கட்டு, s. Condensed mercury, சூதக்கட்டு. இரசக்கிணறு--இரசக்குழி, s. A pit or mine where quick-silver is obtained. இரசக்குடுக்கை, s. A little bottle of mercury. இரசசிந்தூரம், s. Red precipitate of mercury. இரசஞ்சுத்திபண்ண, inf. To purify quick-silver. இரசதாது, s. Quick-silver, சூதம். Wils. p. 698. RASAD'HATU. இரசதாளி, s. A species of plantain, கப்பல்வாழை. இரசத்தைக்கட்டிப்புடமிட, inf. To reduce mercury by decoction. இரசத்தைப்பஸ்மமாக்க, inf. To reduce mercury into powder. இரசநாதம், s. Quick-silver, இர சம். RASAB'HASMAN. இரசபாஷாணம், s. A kind of prepared arsenic. இரசப்பிரீதி--இரசமாதா, s. One of the hundred-and-twenty kinds of arsenic in its natural state. இரசமணி, s. Hard globules of mercury prepared by incantations, &c., and worn as an amulet in order to prevent evil, cure diseases, to promote success in undertakings, &c. இரசமுறிக்க, inf. To prepare mercury for medicine. 2. To carry mercury off from the body. இரசலிங்கம், s. Vermilion, சாதி லிங்கம். 2. A case of mercury for a linga. இரசவாதம்--இரசவித்தை, s. Alchemy--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். இரசவாதம்பண்ண, inf. To practise the art of alchemy. இரசவாதி, s. An alchemist. இரசவாழை--இரதவாழை, s. [improp. இதரைவாழை.] A species of plantain, பேயன்வாழை. இரசவைப்பு, s. Any preparation from mercury--as a muriate, sulphate, &c., an amalgam. இரசனை, s. Flavor, deliciousness, sweetness, delicacy, சுவை. 2. The tongue, நாக்கு. 3. Juice, sap, essence, சாறு. இரசாதிபதி--இரசாதிபன், s. [in astrology.] The sun or one of the planets presiding over fruits, vegetables, &c., for the given years, இரசவஸ்துகட்கதி காரியாங்கிரகம். இரசாபாசம், A loss of flavor, or of juice. இரசேந்திரம், s. Loss of power, property, dignity, &c., சீர்கேடு. ஈடன், s. A strong, competent, wealthy man, பெருமையுடையோன். ஈடன்பாடஞ்சான். A wealthy man will not fear losses. ஈடாட, inf. To compete with another, நேர்நிற்க. 2. [prov.] To be loose--as a tooth, a nail, the spokes of a wheel, to joggle, உழல. ஈடாட்டம், v. noun. Competing or matching with another. 2. Pecuniary ability, the free use of money--as by a rich merchant, கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல். 3. Being loose--as a nail, &c., உழலுகை. ஈடுகட்ட--ஈடுபண்ண, inf. To give security, பிணைகொடுக்க. 2. To make amends, restitution, reprisals, &c., to identify, ஈடுசெய்ய. ஈடுகொடுக்க--ஈடுசெலுத்த, inf. To reward, give an equivalent, to content, பதிலளிக்க. 2. To bear, tolerate, endure, yield, &c., ஈடுகட்ட. அவனுக்கீடுகொடுக்கமுடியாது. It is impossible to give him satisfaction. வீடுபலக்கக்கட்டினாற்புயலுக்குமீடுகொடுக்கும். If the house be strongly built, it will endure the storm. அவனுக்கிவனீடுகொடுக்கமாட்டான். This person cannot compete with him. ஈடுபாடு, s. Loss and gain, நய நஷ்டம். 2. Substitution, ஒப்பு. ஈடேற, inf. To be emancipated from sin, births, &c., to obtain final happiness, உய்ய. 2. To be saved from ruin and be rendered secure, to rise from indigence to prosperity, to be completely rescued from distress, difficulty, danger, disease, &c., வாழ்வடைய. கன்னிகையீடேறிவிட்டாள். The girl has attained a marriage settlement. அந்தக்குடியீடேறிவிட்டது. That family is rescued from indigence, saved from ruin. &c. ஈடேற்ற, inf. To deliver, rescue, இரட்சிக்க. 2. To raise one from distress, indigence, &c. to the attainment of the desired good, to promote, to establish in good circumstances. வாழ்வடை யச்செய்ய. 3. To redeem, emancipate from births, &c., மீட்க. ஈடேற்றப்பட, inf. To be saved, delivered, rescued from ruin indigence, distress, &c., to be rendered secure against danger, &c., இரட்சிக்கப்பட. ஈடேற்றம், s. Final and eternal happiness, the liberation of the soul from the body and its exemption from further transmigrations, and translation to a permanent state of happiness, final emancipation, பேரின்பவாழ்வு. 2. Deliverance from a state of suffering, indigence, &c., உய்வு. 3. The marriage of a destitute girl under favorable auspices, கன்னிகையீடேற்றம். ஈட்டுக்கீடு, s. Like for like, retaliation, requital. கடையீடு, s. Ground the lowest in value and assessment. தலையீடு, s. A very fruitful soil, known to be such by its aspect. 6)

uruṭṭu (p. 65) கிறேன், உருட்டினேன், வேன், உருட்ட, v. a. To roll a ball, or wheel, trundle a hoop, &c., to wheel a barrow, to bowl, turn about, revolve a thing on a plane, to whirl, (a discus, &c.), passing through the air at right angles with the horizon, உருளச்செய்ய. 2. [prov.] To defeat a rival by arguments, sophistry, &c., to overcome in athletic exercises, games, to overmatch, வெல்ல. 3. To beat a drum rapidly, to beat a ruffle, மத்தளம்விரை வாயடிக்க. 4. [in architecture.] To form a moulding, திரட்ட. 5. To form clay or other substances into balls or globules by rolling, working in the hand, &c; குண் டுருட்ட; [ex உருள், v.] உலகுக்குநாயகனாயோராழிதனியுருட்டி. Guiding the wheel of power as the sovereign of the universe. அவனைப்புடையனுருட்டும். The beaver snake will bite, will tumble him over (and bite him). (A curse.) உருட்டித்தைக்க, inf. To roll and sew a border--a kind of hemming. உருட்டிப்பார்க்க--உருட்டிவிழிக் க, inf. To roll the eyes and look intently with signs of anger or intimidation. உருட்டிப்போட, inf. To roll a ball, &c. 2. To defeat by arguments, by a display of skill, or by sophistry, to overcome in games, &c., புரட்டிவிட, 3. To be the cause of ruin to a family, &c., அழித்துப்போட. அசத்தியமந்தக்குடியையுருட்டிபோட்டது. Perjury has ruined the family. ஆனையவனையுருட்டிப்போட்டது. The elephant rolled him over and over. உருட்டுதிரைக்கடல், s. The sea with rolling billows. குளிகையுருட்ட--மாத்திரையுருட் ட, inf. To form or make pills. (Med.) நாயுருட்ட, inf. To tumble down and bite--said of a dog. வாயாலுருட்ட, inf. To use sophistry, to dispute clamorously. கவறுருட்ட, inf. To throw dice'. உருட்டு, v. noun. Rolling, revolving on a plane, the revolution or turning of a wheel, whirling, உருட்டுகை. 2. Fraud, artifice, trick, sophistry in overcoming an antagonist, புரட்டு. 3. [in architecture.] Roundness, globosity, moulding, திரட்சி. 4. Terrifying, frightening, driving away, வெருட்டு. உருட்டும்புரட்டுஞ்சிரட்டையுங்கையும். Prevarication and lying lead to begging. [prov.] உன்னுடையவுருட்டுக்குப்பயப்படேன். I fear not your sophistry. உருட்டுப்புரட்டுள்ளவன், s. A man of tricks and frauds. உருட்டுவண்ணம், s. kuru (p. 125) s. A guru, a spiritual teacher, a priest, ஆசான்.--Note. According to the shastras, the guru is to be regarded by the disciple as the personification of the deity; and to be worshipped with divine honors. In his presence, the disciple is exonerated from his accustomed rites, and devotions, and addresses him by appellatives, used in addressing the deity of his sect. 2. the planet Jupiter, regarded as the guru or priest of Swerga, &c., வியாழன். 3. Heaviness, weight, பாரம். 4. Consequence, importance, moment, காத்திரம். 5. Greatness, eminence, excellence, exaltedness, பெருமை. 6. [in music.] The quantity of a long vowel, or a long note. இருமாத்திரை. 7. [in gram.] A long vowel, நெடில். 8. [in the Agamas.] The deity Siva--as illuminator of souls, சி வன். 9. Divinity, திவ்வியம். The name of a prince of the lunar race, famous in the Bharata, from whom the family was called குருகுலம் and the descendants, கௌரவர்; குரு குலவம்சத்து முதல்அரசன். (பார.) 18. Pustule, blister; hence, any eruptive disease--as the small-pox, chicken-pox, measles, &c., குருவியாதி. குருஆரால்மூக்குப்போலிருக்கின்றது. The smallpox is like the nose of a lamprey. குருநாதன், s. The name of Skanda-as having explained to his father Siva the mystic word ஓம். 2. Siva. 3. A guru--as the lord of the disciple. குருபரன்--குருமூர்த்தி, s. The deity in human form, appearing for the instruction of a devoted person of the சக லர், especially spoken of Siva. குருகடாட்சம், s. The gracious or benign look of the guru on his disciple, dispelling sin, imparting spiritual wisdom, and preparing the soul for emancipation. குருகற்பனை, s. Precept or the guru-deemed sacred. குருசந்தானம், s. A regular succession of priests, or gurus. குருசம்பாவனை, s. Blessing or favor of the guru. 2. Worship or honor due to the guru. குருசம்பிரதாயம், s. Oral instruction in the secret meaning of the mantras, &c., handed down from generation to generation, in the line of the guru, and by him communicated confidentially to his advanced disciples. குருசன்னிதானம், s. The presence of the guru. குருசேடம், s. Remains of a guru's food--considered sacred, குருப்பிரசாதம். குருசேவை, s. Civilities, duties, worship, &c., paid to a guru, குருஉபசரணை. குருதக்கணை--குருதட்சிணை, s. Fees or presents to the guru, commonly in money, given with due homage, &c. குருதீட்சை--குருதீக்கை, s. The initiation of a disciple by a guru to certain privileges of his religion, or afterwards to a more advanced degree, குரூபதேசம். குருத்திரவியம், s. Property or treasure of the guru. குருத்துரோகம், s. Treachery towards a guru, or injury of one. குருநிந்தை, s. Indignity to the priest. குருத்துவம், s. [prov.] To instigate, ஏவிவிட. 2. To persuade, incite, commonly to a bad action, கொடுமைசெய் யத்தூண்ட. 3. To assume to teach, give advice &c., in the presence of the learned, புத்திசொல்ல. குருக்கொள்ள, inf. To assume to teach, give advice, &c., above one's age. இராசநீதி குருக்கொண்டு முதிர்ந்தனையோ. Do you take upon you to teach jurisprudence? (பார.) குருதுரியம், s. [in the Agamas.] The highest degree in the சுத்தம் state of souls; that next to absorption. குருபதம், s. To combine ingredients with medicines to make them active, or to neutralize poisonous qualities, &c., இரசவாதகுருமுடிக்க. குருகுலம், s.
