The time between any given points. [அந்தரம். 2.] அந்தரகாமி, s. A horse which goes above the earth, through the air, ஆகாய மார்க்கமாய்ச்செல்லும்பரி. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரசைவம், s. One of the divisions of the Saiva religion, ஓர்சைவம். அந்தரச்சிந்து, s. One of the thirtytwo kinds of arsenic in its natural state, கற்பாஷாணம். அந்தரதிசை, s. A nine-fold subdivision of the period of a planet's influence on a person's life, கிரகநிலை. [அந் தரம். 2.] அந்தரத்தாமரை, s. A species of lotus whose roots float in the water, not adhering to the soil, ஆகாயத்தாமரை. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரத்திலேநிற்க, inf. To be forsaken by all, be abandoned. [அந்தரம். 1.] என்னையந்தரத்திலேவிட்டான். He has forsaken me. அந்தரபவனி, s. Motion through the air, ஆகாயகமனம். 2. (fig.) Very great swiftness, மிகுவேகம். 3. [prov.] Any thing that goes swiftly, வேகமாய்ச்செல் லுவது. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரப்பிசாசுகள், s. The evil spirits of the air. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரமத்திமபுத்தி, s. Difference between the mean and true daily motion of the sun, or of a planet. [அந் தரம். 4.] அந்தரவல்லி, s. A medicinal creeper, கொல்லன்கோவை. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரவனம், s. An uninhabited desert land. [அந்தரம், 1.] அந்தரவாசம், v. noun. Dwelling in the air, ஆகாயத்தில்வசிக்கை. 2. (s.) A medicinal shrub, ஓர்மருந்துப்பூடு. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரவாயு, s. Hydrocele, வீம பீசம், [அந்தரம் 2.] அந்தரவீச்சு, v. noun. Beating the air. அந்தரவீச்சுக்காரன், s. One who beats the air, a cheat, a fraudulent man. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தராயம், s. ari (p. 23) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To cut, (commonly by applying the instrument to the thing cut) cut off, nip, strike off, rip, part asunder, chop off, amputate, mince, chip, அறுக்க. 2. To saw, வாளாலரிய. (c.) 3. [prov.] To cut off the excess of clay from the mould in making bricks, செங்கல்லறுக்க. நெல்லரியும்பருவம். The season for cutting (harvest) rice. அரிதாள், s. Stubble, கதிரறுத்ததாள். அரிநெல்லி, s. A tree yielding a sour fruit, sometimes called country gooseberry. ஓர்மரம், Cicca disticha, L., so called from its sulcated fruit, which appears as if it had been carved out with a knife. அரிவாள், s. A sickle, reaping hook, கொய்யுமாயுதம். 2. A saw, ஈர்வாள். அரிவாட்சொண்டன்--அரிவாண் மூக்கன், s. [prov.] A kind of sea-bird, one of the heron-species, ஓர்கொக்கு. அரிவாள்மணை, s. An instrument, like a knife, fastened to a plank for cutting in pieces, fish, meat, &c., கறிகுறைக் குங்கருவி. கருக்கரிவாள், s. A jagged sickle. வெட்டரிவாள், s. A hook, a crooked knife to slay victims. 46)

aṟpam (p. 33) s. Littleness, any thing of trifling import, of small consequence, insignificance, சிறுமை. 2. Inferiority, a trifle, இழிவு. Wils. p. 74. ALPA. 3. Slightness, இலேசு. 4. (p.) A dog, நாய். அற்ப ஆசை கோடிதவத்தைக்கெடுக்கும். The coveting of a small thing destroys the penance of years. இதொரு அற்பகாரியம். This is a trifling thing. அற்பசங்கை--அற்பாசமனம், s. The act of making urine, modesté--in reference to those who wear the string. அற்பத்தனம், s. Vileness, meanness. அற்பபுத்தி, s. Low wit, folly, silliness. அற்பமாய், adv. Meanly, basely, vilely. அற்பன், s. (pl. அற்பர்.) An inferior, low-caste or ill-bred person, a mean person. அற்பனுக்குப்பவிஷுவந்தாலத்தராத்திரியிற்குடை பிடிப்பான். If a mean person has obtained wealth, he will carry an umbrella even at midnight. 67)

alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf.
