acumāṟṟm (p. 6) s. [prov.] Suspicion, ஐயம். 2. A hint, a conjectural circumstance, சைகை. அசுமாற்றங்காட்ட, inf. To give a hint commonly as one thief to another, or to make a noise as a thief, to ascertain whether people are at home or awake. அசுமாற்றப்பட, inf. To be heard as a noise, or seen as a sight exciting suspicion of thieves or of mischief at hand. 39)

There are five kinds of அடி as a metrical line. 1. குறளடி. 2. சிந்தடி. 3. அளவடி, or நேரடி. 4. நெடிலடி. 5. கழிநெடிலடி which see. அடிகொள்ள, inf. To begin, originate, be founded, தொடங்க. அடிகோல, inf. To lay a foundation for any building, அஸ்திவாரம்போட. 2. To take measures, undertake, make preparations, முயற்சிசெய்ய. அடிக்கடி, adv. Frequently, often repeatedly, reiteratedly, பலமுறை. அடிக்குடி, s. To begin, undertake, make the first effort, effect an object, தொடங்க. அடிமடக்கு, s. [in prosody.] Repetition of a word or words with different meanings in the beginning of a line, or the repetition of a line in a verse with different meanings, சித்திரக்கவியி லொன்று, as, ஆகங்கண்டகராலற்றவாடவர், ஆகங் கண்டகராலற்றவன்பினர். அடிமடி, s. A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. From beginning to end, ஆதியந் தம். 3. Upside down, கீழ்மேல். 4. Head and foot, காலுந்தலையும். அடிமுரண்டொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. Ancient lines of ancestry, வமிசவரலாறு. அடிவரலாறாகத்தெரிதல். Understanding from the first. அடிவருட, inf. To chafe, stroke, or shampoo the legs of another. அடிவாரம், s. The foot of a hill, சாரல். அடிவானம், s. Horizon, திகாந்தம். அடிவிட--அடிவிரிய--அடிவிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To be cracked as the bottom of a chatty, &c. by use, அடியுடைய. அடிவைக்க, inf. To step, set a step, காலடிவைக்க. 2. To begin to walk as a child, நடக்கத்தொடங்க. 3. To intrude one's self into an affair, தலையிட. 4. To begin a work, ஆரம்பிக்க. மலையடிப்பட்டி, s. A village at the foot of a hill. சிற்றடி, s. A small or delicate foot.

aṉaiya (p. 33) --அன்ன. The crude form of a symbolic verb derived from the demonstrative அ, having two distinct uses. As a term of similitude, it is an affix but regularly conjugated in two forms, being complete in each, in all it persons, varieties and uses, as a verb, a participle, a noun, &c., the same as other symbolic verbs. It also expresses likeness to the person or thing indicated by the word to which it is affixed, உவம வுருபு. 2. It is sometimes equivalent to the simple pronoun; as, அன்னான். Such a man. (p.) Singular. அனையன்--அனையேன். I am like. அனையாய்--அனையை. Thou art like. அனையன்--அனையான். He is like. அன்னான். Such a man. அன்னாள். Such a matron. அன்னது. Such a thing. Plural. அனையெம்--அனையேம்--அனையோம். We are like. அனையிர்--அனையீர். Ye are like. அனையர்--அனையார். They are like. அன்னர்--அன்னார். Such persons. அனைய--அனையன--அன்ன. They (things) are like. அனையமன்னற்கழிவுமுண்டாங்கொலோ? Can such a prince ever be ruined? பவளமனையவாய். The coral-mouthed. எம்மனோர்க்கியம்புமாறரிதே. It is not possible for mortals like me to declare, &c. மயிலன்னாய். You who are (elegant) as a peacock, (addressed to a lady.) 128)

alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. To adorn, சிங்காரிக்க. அலங்காரப்பிரியன், s. Vishnu. அலங்காரப்பேச்சு, s. Fine, elegant language, flattery. 33) *

alukkulaivu (p. 28) v. noun. Becoming disorganized, deranged--as a lock or watch, or a family by death, &c., தாறுமாறாதல். (c.) 33)

aẕi (p. 32) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To blight, blast, ruin, கெடுக்க. 2. To waste, injure, damage, பாழாக்க. 3. To abolish, consume, annihilate, destroy. demolish, exterminate, சங்கரிக்க. 4. To efface, obliterate, குலைக்க. 5. To refute an argument. கண்டிக்க. தேடாதழிக்கிற்பாடாய்முடியும். If you spend what you have not earned, you will suffer. (ஔவை.) கருவழித்திடலுநன்றே. It would be better to destroy the foetus, (to cause abortion.) வறிதினழித்திடார். They will waste nothing in vain. (காசிகரண்டம்.) அழிகட்டு, s. A fabrication either varbal or written to deprive another of his right, a forgery, (a law term), பொ ய்ச்சீட்டு. 2. An excuse, pretence, subterfuge, வீண்போக்கு. 3. Obstacle, impediment, hinderance, தடை. 4. Means used for counteracting magic, poison, &c. மாற்று. அழிச்சாட்டியம், s. Improper treatment, an unlawful or wicked proceeding. வாங்கின கடனைக்கொடாம லழிச்சாட்டியம் பண் ணிவருகிறான். He gives much trouble by delaying to pay the debt. அழிச்சாட்டியக்காரன், s. A turbulent fellow, a bully. அழிப்பு, v. noun. Destroying, ruining, wasting, consuming in an active sense, அழிக்கை. அழிப்பாளி, s. A spendthrift, squanderer, prodigal, profligate, ஊதாரி. 8)

ām (p. 39) s. One of the poetic expletives, சாரியை. 2. An expletive, அசைநிலை. 3. A termination of the first person plural, in verbs of both classes, தன்மைப்பன்மைவி குதி. 4. A termination of the plural of verbs embracing the first and second person, உளப்பாட்டுத்தன்மைப்பன்மைவிகுதி. 5. A contraction of ஆகும், used to denote a quotation--as பெரியவனாம், it is said 'he is great.' 6. A contraction of the future of ஆ, in the third person neuter. 7. A particle of assent, yes; it is often doubled --as ஆம் ஆம், written, ஆமாம், and contracted to ஆமா. 8. A particle of comparison, ஓர் உவமவுருபு--as அல்லாங்குழலாள், a woman whose hair is black as darkness. (p.) வந்தாம். We came. பணியுமாமென்றும் பெருமை. Greatness is always humble. நானும் நீயுஞ்சென்றாம். I and you went. ஆங்காலம், s. The season when fortune favors and all things prove successful. ஆந்தனையும்--ஆமளவும். As much as possible. ஆமாறு, s. The proper manner of doing a thing, ஆகுமுறை. (p.) ஆமானவன், s. A worthy, competent respectable person, சிறந்தவன். (c.) ஆம்படி. In the manner which is agreeable to, or sufficient for. ஆம்புத்தி, s. Good or suitable advice, discrimination, cleverness, skill. ஆம்போலே. Agreeably to, possibly, perhaps. மண்ணாங்கட்டி, s. A clod. 10)

āṟu (p. 43) s. A river, natural current, brook, channel or passage through shallows, a canal, நதி. (c.) 2. (p.) Way, road, path, mode, manner, rule, method, order, custom, circumstance, வழி. In this sense, in verse, the று, is sometimes omitted. 3. Morality, virtue, good conduct, way in a moral sense, the good or right way, ஒழுக்கம. சுரருலகெய்துமாறளித்தான. He endowed him with the bliss of the gods, or literally, granted that he should attain to the world of the gods. யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதி Go and tell that I am come--ஆ for ஆறு. என்றவாறு. A form added to explanations of grammatical rules, &c., implying such is the meaning. ஆறலைக்க, inf. To rob in the highway, infest the road, வழிப்பறிக்க. (p.) ஆறலை--ஆறலைப்பு, v. noun. Highway-robbery, street-robbery, வழிப்பறி க்கை. ஆறலைக்கள்வருமளியராயினார். Even the highway-robbers have proved friends. (நடை.) ஆறாடி, s. A lascivious, idle fellow, a vagabond, a pest. 2. One not to be relied on, a changeling, man without character. ஆறுகட்ட, inf. To construct a dam across a river, construct the banks of a river. ஆறுகாட்டி, s. A guide, pilot, வழிகாட்டி. ஆறை--ஆற்றூர், s. The name of a town in the Carnatic. (p.) ஆறைநகர்காவலன், s. The king of that town. ஆற்றங்கரை, s. The bank of a river, shore of a river. ஆற்றிடைக்குறை, s. Blank, or dried spots in a river, an inlet, ait, அரங் கம்; [ex இடை, intermediate, et குறை, wanting.] ஆற்றிடைப்பட, inf. To be in the way, வழியிலிருக்க. 2. To meet in the way, வழியெதிர்ப்பட. (p.) ஆற்றுக்காலாட்டியர், s. Agricultural women of low caste, உழத்தியர். (p.) ஆற்றுக்கால், s. A dike, channel for conveying water to the fields, ஆற்று வாய்க்கால். ஆற்றுச்சுழி, s. A whirlpool, vortex, ஆற்றுநீர்ச்சுழி. ஆற்றுச்செருப்படி, s. A small water-plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆற்றுணா, s. Rice tied up for a journey, கட்டுச்சோறு. (p.) ஆற்றுத்தும்மட்டி, s. Colocynth, பேய்க்கொம்மட்டி, Citrullus colocynthis, L. ஆற்றுநீர்ப்பொருள்கோள், s. The natural construction of a sentence. See பொருள்கோள். ஆற்றுநெட்டி, s. The நீர்ச்சுண்டி, a water-plant, Aeschynomene paludosa. ஆற்றுப்பச்சை, s. A curious, greenstone--one of the one-hundred-andtwenty kinds of minerals--as நாகப்பச்சை. ஆற்றுப்படுத்த, inf. To lead, direct or conduct a person into the right way, வழிப்படுத்த. 2. To give advice, to conduct into the path of virtue, நன் மார்க்கத்திலுட்படுத்த. (p.) ஆற்றுப்படை, v. noun. The act of conducting, directing, &c., either physically or morally. 2. A poem, the object of which is to conduct one to a superior. விறலியாற்றுப்படை, s. A songstress directing another to a benevolent man. பாணராற்றுப்படை, s. A singer directing another to a patron. கூத்தராற்றுப்படை, s. An actor on the stage directing another to a generous man. பொருநராற்றுப்படை, s. A buffoon directing another to a prince. ஆற்றுப்பாசி, s. A water-plant, ஓர்பூடு, Caulinia indica, L. ஆற்றுப்பித்தல்--ஆற்றோரம், s. Side or bank of a river. ஆற்றுப்பூவரசு, s. A tree, ஓர்மரம், Trewia nudiflora, L. ஆற்றுப்பெருக்கு, s. A swelling of a river. ஆற்றுமடை, s. The channel or bed of a river, ஆற்றுக்காலின்மடை. ஆற்றுமரி, s. A shrub, நீருமரி. ஆற்றுமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmin, ஓர்மல்லிகை, Jasminum sambac. ஆற்றுமுகத்துவாரம், s. The mouth of a river. ஆற்றுமுள்ளி, s. A thorny plant growing by the river, ஓர்பூடு, Dilivaria ilicifolia. ஆற்றுமேலழகி, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு, Celsia coromandeliana, L. ஆற்றுவாளை, s. A river-fish. See வாளை. ஆற்றெதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet on the road. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, v. noun. The flowing of a river, stream, current, ஆற்றுநீரோ ட்டம். 2. Rules following each other in regular and natural order, (lit.) the flowing of a river--one of the four aspects of a grammatical rule. See சூத்திர நிலை. தீயாறுடையான், s. An immoral man. நல்லாறுடையான், s. A moral person, one whose conduct is agreeable to rule. சிற்றாறு, s. A rivulet, a brook. 66)

āṟṟl (p. 43) s. Strength, power, prowess, ability, வலிமை. 2. Energy, spirit, முயற்சி. 3. Abundance, much copiousness, மிகுதி. 4. Wisdom, knowledge of divine things, ஞானம். 5. Stability, fixedness, firmness, நிலையுடைமை. For the verbal meanings of this word, see under ஆற்று. v. ஆற்றுவாராற்றல் பசியாற்றல் அப்பசியை மாற்றுவா ராற்றலிற்பின். Though the fortitude with which those who practise austerities endure their hunger is very great, yet it is inferior to the energy of the generous who feed the hungry. ஆற்றல்கேடு, s. Great weakness from sickness, great fatigue, வலியழிவு. (c.) ஆற்றறுக்க, inf. To deprive one of power, reduce his strength, &c., desert him in time of need, வலிகெடுக்க. 69)

āṟṟu (p. 43) கிறேன், ஆற்றினேன், வேன், ஆற்ற, v. a. To cool, refresh, குளிரச்செய்ய. 2. To assuage, appease, alleviate, soothe, console, compose, lull, mitigate, தணிக்க. 3. To slack, loosen what is tied or twisted, முறுக்குத்தளர்த்த. (c.) 4. (p.) To do, act, perform a duty, செய்ய. 5. To bear a weight, தாங்க. 6. To carry, or sustain a burden or calamity, பொறுக்க.--Note. This verb is sometimes used impersonally--as இந்த வழியென்னாலேயாற்றாது. I cannot get along this road. ஆற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Greatly, exceedingly, மிகுதியாய். அமிழ்தினுமாற்றவினிதே. Sweeter than nectar. (குறள்.) கணவராற்றமுனிந்தே. The husbands greatly resenting. ஆற்றாக்கேடு, s. Extreme poverty, indigence exigence, great necessity. ஆற்றாச்சண்டி, s. One who perversely persists in application for aid through poverty, one past shame, an insatiable wretch. ஆற்றாத்தனம், s. Insatiableness. ஆற்றாப்பட்சம், s. What cannot be borne, intolerableness--as ஆற்றாமை. ஆற்றாமை, neg. v. noun. Inability to bear--as excessive hunger, pain, &c., சகிக்கக்கூடாமை. 2. Impatience, பொறா மை. 3. Voracity, voraciousness, insatiableness, திருத்தியின்மை. ஆற்றார், s. Foes, opponents, rivals, those who envy one, பகைவர். 2. The poor, the afflicted, தரித்திரர். (p.) ஆற்றிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To cool and give. 2. To help or relieve one at work. ஆற்றித்தேற்ற, inf. To soothe and console. ஆற்றிப்போற்றிக்கொள்ள, inf. To treat guests with civility, விருந்தினரை யுபசரிக்க. 2. To render aid--as to a sick person, to help one in distress, துன்புற்றோ ரைக்காக்க. 3. To console, ஆற்ற. ஆற்றுவிக்க, inf. [causal.] To console, cherish, afford consolation, தணி யச்செய்ய. 2. To inspire with courage, வலிதர. 3. To enable to bear, or endure, உறுதிசெய்ய. ஆற்றல், v. noun. Cooling, assuaging, consoling, &c. 2. Enduring, bearing patiently. 3. Bearing a load.

icai (p. 45) s. A sound, noise, ஒலி. 2. Praise, புகழ். 3. A word, சொல். 4. A tune, melody, மிடற்றாற்பிறக்குமிசை. 5. Instrumental music, நரம்பிற்பிறக்குமிசை. 6. Sound, harmony in music, a harmonious or musical sound, tone, note, &c., இசைப்பாட்டு. Also a term common to the different parts in music. (p.) (சது.)--The seven principal sounds or notes in the vocal and instrumental music of the Hindus are called, சுரம், in singing, and நரம்பு, on stringed instruments; they are, 1. குரல், the guttural sound, the sound coming from the throat, மிடற்றாற்குரல். 2. துத்தம், the second tone of the gamut, or நி modulated by the tongue, நாவினாற்றுத்தம். 3. கைக்கிளை, the sound caused by the palate, அண்ணத்தாற்கைக்கிளை. 4. உழை, the cerebral, or the sound coming from the head, சிரத்தாலுழை. 5. இளி, that which proceeds from the forehead, நெற்றியாலிளி. 6. விளரி, the pectoral, or that which proceeds from the breast, நெஞ்சால்விளரி. 7. தாரம், that from the nose, or nasal, மூக் காற்றாரம்.--These sounds, they compare: 1. With those of animals--as that of a peacock, a bull, a sheep, &c. 2. With the different tastes of milk, honey, &c. 3. With the different scents of jasmin, nymph&oe;a, &c.--The letters (அட்சரம்.) by which they express these notes are as follow: 1. ஆஅ. 2. ஈஇ. 3. ஊஉ. 4. ஏஎ. 5. ஐஇ. 6. ஓஒ. 7. ஔஉ.--The time or measure, (மாத்திரை,) of these notes is as follows:The 1st note குரல் contains 4 measures நான்கு குரல். 2d துத்தம் contains 4 measures நான்குதுத்தம். 3d கைக்கிளை ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுகைக்கிளை. 4th உழை ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுழை. 5th இளி ,, 4 ,, நான்கிளி. 6th விளரி ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுவிளரி. 7th தாரம் ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுதாரம். From the combinations of these notes or sounds, are formed seven different kinds of airs or tunes; (பாலை) viz.: 1. செம்பாலை, or the air in which the first note is doubled, குரலேகுரல். 2. படுமலைப் பாலை, the air in which the second and first notes are compounded, துத்தமேகுரல். 3. செவ்வழிப்பாலை, the air in which the third and the first notes are compounded, கைக்கிளையேகுரல். 4. அரும்பாலை, the air in which the fourth and the first notes are compounded, உழையேகுரல். 5. கொடி ப்பாலை, the air in which the fifth and first notes are compounded, இளியேகுரல். 6. விளரிப்பாலை, the air in which the sixth and first notes are compouned, விளரியே குரல். 7. மேற்செம்பாலை, the air in which the seventh and first notes are compounded, தாரமேகுரல்.--The differences of these tunes are as follow; viz.: 1. கொ டிப்பாலை, a tune higher than செம்பாலை. 2. விளரிப்பாலை and மேற்செம்பாலை, tunes higher than கொடிச்செம்பாலை.--The three different parts in music are: 1. மந்தவிசை, bass, or the lowest pitch--also called, மந்தரம் or காகுளி. 2. மத்திமலிசை, tenor or medium--also called, மதுரம் or சமன். 3. தாரவிசை, treble or the highest pitch-also called, உச்சம் or வல்லிசை.--The different parts are not sung together, but one after another in succession--மந்த விசை, takes its pitch in the key note of the bass--the மத்திமவிசை, in the fifth-and the உச்சம், in the octave. The term is also applied to the several notes or sounds of the octave--also called சுரம்-as the first சுரம், the second சுரம், &c., and the whole are called the சரளி or gamut. இசைகேடு, s. Dissonance, discord, want of harmony, சுரபேதம். 2. Dishonor, disgrace, ill-fame, அவகீர்த்தி. 3. Want of opportunity, inconvenience, inauspiciousness--as of a day, ஒத்துக்கொள் ளாமை. 4. [prov.] Reduced state, emaciated state, இடைந்துபோனநிலைமை. இசைகொள்ள, inf. To be renowned, கீர்த்திபெற. இசைக்குழல், s. A musical windinstrument, ஊதுகுழல். இசைத்தமிழ், s. One of the three kinds of Tamil odes, or other poetry adapted to song--also the various changes made to accommodate language to music, முத்தமிழினொன்று. இசைத்திரிபு, s. A change of tune by mistake, ஓசைப்பிறழ்வு. 2. Variation in music, இசைமாறுகை. 3. A different enunciation of the same terms, according to the different senses they are intended to convey, இசையறுத்துக்கூறுகை-as செம்பொன்பதின்கழஞ்சு, may be செம்பு ஒன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the copper is nine கழஞ்சு--or செம்பொன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the fine gold is ten கழஞ்சு. So குறும்பரம்பு may be குறும்பர் அம்பு, the army of territorial chiefs-or குறும் பரம்பு, a short board used for smoothing ploughed fields. இசைநாள், s. The twenty-fifth, also the twenty-sixth lunar mansions, பூரட்டாதி and உத்திரட்டாதி. இசைநிறை, s. [in poetry.] The use of a letter, or word to fill the measure-an expletive, ஓரிடைச்சொல்; as ஏஎ யிவ ளொருத்திபேடி. Heh! This is a hermaphrodite. இசைநூல், s. The science of music. இசைப்பாட்டு, s. A melody, tune, song, காந்தாரம். இசைமடந்தை, s. Sarasvati, the wife of Brahma; the goddess of speech, of music, fame, praise, &c., சரச்சுவதி. (p.) இசையுள்ளான், s. A man of fame or praise. இசையெச்சம், s. [in grammar.] Ellipsis or omission of a word, சொல் லெச்சம். இசையெடுக்க, inf. To pitch or begin a tune. இசைவல்லோர்--இசைவாணர். s. Proficients in music, சங்கீதபாடகர். 2. Heavenly choristers, கந்தருவர். 39)

iṭkku (p. 45) s. Incivility, rudeness in answers, contumely, சேஷ்டை. 2. Indecent words, இழிசொல். 3. Opposition, contrariety, non-compliance, முருட்டுத்தனம். 4. Cavil, pugnaciousness, captiousness, குதர்க்கம். (c.) இடக்குச்சொல்லுகிறான். He uses subterfuges, he opposes, speaks against, &c. அவன்செய்கிறதெல்லாமிடக்கு. His conduct is all contrary, unyielding. இடக்கன், s. A rude, saucy, disrespectful person, தாறுமாறுசெய்பவன். இடக்குப்பண்ண, inf. To deal knavishly, fraudulently, to do wrong. இடக்குப்பேச, inf. To cavil, speak unmannerly, use indecent language. இடக்குமடக்கு, s. Trouble, difficulty. 2. Cavil. 54)

iṭai (p. 45) s. Middle, midst, centre, நடு. 2. The middle of a body, the waist, மருங்குல். 3. As இடைச்சொல்--a particle. 4. Interval of time, &c., நடுநேரம். 5. (p.) Place, room, space, position, situation, இடம். 6. A form of the seventh or locative case, ஏழனுருபு. 7. The side of a thing, place, quarter, region, பக்கம். 8. An elephant, யானை. 9. Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. Frustration, interruption, disappointment, obstruction, hinderance, mishap, casualty, contingence, misfortune, disaster, இடர். (c.) இடையெண், s. A poem increasing and decreasing like the waves of the sea, அம்போதரங்கத்தொன்று. இடையொடுகடைமடக்கு, s. A figure in Rhetoric, repetition of a word or phrase in the middle and end of a line with different meanings, மடக்கணியி லொன்று. இடைவழக்கு, s. [prov.] A suit at law instituted by a new claimant while the previous one is going forward, கிளை வழக்கு. இடைவழக்காளி, s. An intervening party in a law-suit. இடைவழி, s. Midway. இடைவள்ளல், s. A term common to the second of the three classes of kings famed for liberality. (p.) இடைவாய், s. The degrees marked upon a steel-yard. இடைவிட, inf. To intermit, suspend, interrupt, leave intermissions, interstices, &c. இடைவிட்டுவிட்டு. Every other one. இடைவிடாமழை, s. Incessant rain. இடைவிடாமல், neg. v. part. Incessantly, constantly, without intermission. இடைவெட்டுப்பணம், s. A clipped or imperfectly stamped coin, மாறுமத் திரைவிழுந்தபணம். 2.
