akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. There are five kinds of அடி as a metrical line. 1. குறளடி. 2. சிந்தடி. 3. அளவடி, or நேரடி. 4. நெடிலடி. 5. கழிநெடிலடி which see. அடிகொள்ள, inf. To begin, originate, be founded, தொடங்க. அடிகோல, inf. [in prosody.] Repetition of a word or words with different meanings in the beginning of a line, or the repetition of a line in a verse with different meanings, சித்திரக்கவியி லொன்று, as, ஆகங்கண்டகராலற்றவாடவர், ஆகங் கண்டகராலற்றவன்பினர். அடிமடி, s. A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. From beginning to end, ஆதியந் தம். 3. Upside down, கீழ்மேல். 4. Head and foot, காலுந்தலையும். அடிமுரண்டொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. Ancient lines of ancestry, வமிசவரலாறு. அடிவரலாறாகத்தெரிதல். Understanding from the first. அடிவருட, inf. To chafe, stroke, or shampoo the legs of another. அடிவாரம், s. The foot of a hill, சாரல். அடிவானம், s. Horizon, திகாந்தம். அடிவிட--அடிவிரிய--அடிவிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To be cracked as the bottom of a chatty, &c. by use, அடியுடைய. அடிவைக்க, inf. arcu (p. 23) --அரசமரம், s. A tree-the Ficus religiosa, Peepul, or poplarleaved fig-tree--forming one of the nine kinds of wood used in burnt offerings, ஓர்மரம். (See சமித்து.) Its seed is used for medicinal purposes. அரசாணிக்கால், s. A bough of this tree, which together with others from the கலியாணமுருக்கு, (or erythrina,) &c. is fixed between two of the interior posts of the marriage pandal, round which the parties pass, performing particular ceremonies. அரசிலை, s. The leaves of the அரசு. 2. The figure of a leaf as branded on beasts, &c., அரசிலைக்குறி. அரசிலைத்தூக்கம்--அரசிலைத்தொங் கல், s. Hangings, resembling the அரசு leaves. கொடியரசு, s. A different species of Ficus. பூவரசு, s. The portia tree, பூப் பரத்தி, Thespesia populnea, L. ஆற்றரசு, s. Another species of Ficus growing in the vicinity of rivers. 2)

arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

aviẕ (p. 31) s. A single grain of boiled rice, ஓர்சோறு. (c.) வடித்தபானையிலோரவிழுங்கிடையாது. A single grain of rice will not be found in a well cleaned vessel. கலவுமிதின்றாலோரவிழ்தட்டாதா? If you eat twelve marcals of husks, will not one grain of rice touch (your teeth?) i. e. if you take much trouble, will you not derive some benefit? 11)

iṭu (p. 45) கிறேன், இட்டேன், வேன், இட, v. a. To set, put on as ornaments, தரிக்க. 2. To put in, deposit, keep, வைக்க. 3. To give, bestow, grant, devote, appropriate, ஈய. 4. To throw, case, poke out, poke or thrust into, எறிய. 5. To designate, appropriate, assign, allot, destine, dictate, விதிக்க. 6. To pour, shower, சொரிய.--As an expletive, it is joined to the gerunds of other verbs in which, it sometimes gives additional force or emphasis to the action expressed, or serves as a kind of finish, வினையெச்சத்தோடுசேர்ந்தோர்பகுதிநீர்மைத்தா ய்வருவது.--The gerund இட்டு is sometimes used to express cause, instrumentality, &c.--as, அவனையிட்டிந்தப்பழிவந்தது, this disgrace happened through him. மரத்தினிற்பறவைக்கிடுகலேபோலப்பாதகமனைத்துந் தொலைத்திடும். It will drive away every evil, as a stone thrown at birds in a tree puts them to flight. இடுகடை, s. A door or gate where much liberality is exercised, கொடுப்போனில்வாயில். (p.) இடுகறல், s. irṇṭu (p. 49) s. and adj. Two, இரண்டா மெண்.-- As an adjective prefix, it often becomes இரு and ஈர், double, இரட்டிப்பான-as இருநிறம், two colors, a double color; ஈர லகு, two syllables. See அலகு. இரண்டிலொன்றுசொல்லு. Say either this or that. நாடிரண்டுபட்டது. The country is divided into two factions. இரட்ட, inf. To double, repeat a motion, sound, action, &c., to reiterate. See இரட்டிக்க. இரட்டாங்காலி, s. [prov. prop. இரட்டைமரம்.] A double tree--especially of the palmyra species. இரட்டி, s. Double quantity, twice as much, இருபங்கு. அதற்கிரட்டிதருவேன். I will give double the quantity. பத்திரட்டி, s. Twice ten. இரட்டிக்க, inf. To double, repeat, reiterate, இரட்ட. 2. (c.) To return --as a disease, வியாதிமக்களிக்க. 3. To plough the second time, always crosswise, இரண்டாமுறையுழ. 4. To differ from, be discrepant, &c., வேறுபட. 5. To disagree--as different kinds of food eaten at once, to be indigested, போசனம் ஒவ்வா திருக்க. இந்தச்சாட்சியந்தச்சாட்சிக்கிரட்டிக்கிறது. This evidence differs from the other. மகரமிரட்டித்தது. The consonant ம், is doubled. நோயிரட்டிக்கின்றது. The pain is double what it was. 2. The disease has returned. இரட்டித்தசெலவு, s. Double expense. இரட்டித்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To repeat, say a thing a second time. 2. To make a discrepant statement, or a statement different from that of another. உழவிரட்டிக்க, inf. To plough the second time. இரட்டிப்பு, s. Two-fold, twice as much, a double quantity. 2. v. noun. Doubling, making two-fold. இரட்டு, s. Two-fold, இருமடங் கு. (p.) 2. (c.) Double-threaded cloth, either coarse or fine, sack-cloth, ஓர்வ கைச்சீலை. இரட்டுப்பை, s. A sack made of coarse cloth. இரட்டுறமொழிய, inf. To state a rule so that it may comprise another, the one plainly apparent, the other to be made out by study; or the use of terms of double meaning either of which serves to make good sense, though the ideas will be wholly different; or the use of terms by which one thing is employed and another implied. See உத்தி. (p.) இரட்டை, s. Two things naturally conjoined--as a double fruit, leaf, &c.; twins, two things alike, இரண்டொன் றானது. 2. (p.) Gemini in the zodiac, two females, மிதுனராசி. 3. Even, even numbers--opposed to ஒற்றை, இரட்டையெண்-as 6, 8, 24, &c. 4. A couple, tow, சேரடு. 5. A female songster, பாடுவிச்சி. ஒற்றையிரட்டைபிடித்தல். A kind of play, playing at odd and even. இரட்டைக்கிளவி, s. Double words imitating certain sounds, ஒலிக்கு றிப்பில்வருமிரட்டைமொழி--as சளசளவெனமழை த்தாரைகான்றன. (The clouds) poured a shower of rain, with a murmuring sound. (இராமா.) (p.) இரட்டைச்சுழி, s. The symbol ை of the vowel ஐ. 2. Two curls in horses, cattle, &c.--as இருசுழி. இரட்டைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the same word is repeated through the line, (see தொடை)--as ஒக் குமே யொக்குமே யொக்குமே யொக்கும் விளக்கினு ட்சீறெரியொக்குமே யொக்கும் குளக்கொட்டிப்பூவி னிறம், the color of the flower of the water-plant கொட்டி, resembles the delicate flame of the lamp. (p.) இரட்டைப்படவெண்ண, inf. To count even, making a series increasing by a common ratio--as 2, 4, 6, &c. இரட்டைப்பாக்கு, s. An arecanut with two eyes producing, if planted, two trees. இரட்டைப்பிள்ளை, s. Twins. 2. [prov.] A double young areca or cocoa-nut tree. இரட்டைப்புரிக்கயிறு, s. A rope or string made of two strands. இரட்டைமணிமாலை, s. A poem consisting of twenty verses of வெண்பா and கலித்துறை, or நேரிசைவெண்பா and ஆசி ரியவிருத்தம், and composed according to the rules of அந்தாதி. See பிரபந்தம். (p.) இரண்டகம், s. Treachery, perfidy, duplicity, dissimulation, double-dealing, துரோகம். (c.) இரண்டகம்நினைக்க, inf. To frame a treacherous design. இரண்டகம்பண்ண, inf. To betray, act treacherously, perfidiously. இரண்டகவாதி, s. A treacherous person, an insincere friend, துரோகி. இரண்டன்மை, s. Sameness, (lit.) being not two--as அத்துவைதம், which see. இரண்டாந்தரம், s. Secondary kind or class--as of cloth, tobacco, &c. 2. The second time. இரண்டாம்பட்சம், s. Second or secondary class, kind, &c., not the most approved. இரண்டாம்பாட்டன், s. A great grand-father, மூதாதை. இரண்டாவது, s. That which is the second. 2. adv. Secondly. இரண்டுக்குப்போக, inf. [vul.] To go to stool, (usage of children.) இரண்டுக்குற்றது, s. Critical juncture, a crisis in a disease, சாத்தியமோவசர த்தியமோவென்பது. 2. Dubiousness, possibility of two contrary impending issues, a double probability, இதுவோவதுவோவெ ன்கை. இரண்டுங்கெட்ட நேரம், s. [vul.] The dusk of the evening, used for an inauspicious or untimely season, &c. இரண்டுங்கெட்டவன், s. An indifferent man, neither good nor bad. இரண்டுசொல்ல, inf. To evade, refuse, give an indirect or evasive answer. இரண்டுசெய்ய, inf. To act perfidiously. 2. To act against one's command, to behave disobediently. இரண்டுநினைக்க, inf. To be hypocritical, to meditate treachery under a show of honesty. இரண்டுபட, inf. To vary from, differ in the issue or event, disagree, dissent, become opposed, வேறுபட. 2. To be discrepant, appear discordant, &c., ஒற்றுமையின்றாக. 3. To be doubtful, ஐயுற. இரண்டுபடுத்த, inf. To disjoin, disunite, cause to differ, sow dissension. இரண்டுபண்ண, inf. To act treacherously. இரு. Two, as இரண்டு and ஈர். இருகந்தம், s. Good and bad smell, இருமணம். (p.) இருகால், s. [vul. இருக்கால்.] Twice, இரண்டுவிசை. 2. Two feet, இருதாள். இருகாழி, [prov. இருக்காழி.] A palmyra or இருப்பை fruit with two kernels, இரண்டுகொட்டையுடையகாய்; [ex காழ், seed.] இருகுறணேரிசைவெண்பா, s. A நேரிசைவெண்பா, consisting of two குறள் வெண்பா, and a foot affixed to the second line for the sake of harmony, ஓர் வகைவெண்பா. (p.) இருக்கால், s. A certain cast of the dice in playing a game, கவற்றிற்குறித் தவோரெண். (c.) இருசமயவிளக்கம், s. A controversial treatise on the merits of Saivaism and Vishnuism, ஓர்நூல். இருசமயவிளக்கச்சூறாவளி, s. A treatise written in confutation of the above. இருசீரகம், s. The two different kinds of சீரகம்--as நற்சீரகம் and கருஞ்சீரகம், which see. இருசுடர், s. The two lights--the sun and moon, சூரியசந்திரர். (p.) இருசுடர்த்தோற்றம், s. One of the divisions of பெருங்காப்பியம், சூரியசந்திரோத யங்களின்வருணனை. (p.) இருசுழி, s. A double curl as a mark. இருசுழியிருந்துண்டாலுமுண்ணும் இரந்துண்டா லுமுண்ணும். A person of a double curl may live in luxury or be reduced to beggary. இருதலைக்கொள்ளி, s. A brand burning at both ends. ஒருதலைக்கொள்ளிநடுவிலெறும்பைப்போலானே ன். I am like an ant between two fires; i. e. I am in straits. இருதலைப்பட்சி, s. A kind of bird fabled to have two heads. இருதலைமணியன், s. A snake said to have two heads--one at each end. இருதாரைக்கத்தி, s. Two-edged sword or knife. இருதிணை, s. The two classes உயர்திணை and அஃறிணை into which Tamil nouns are divided. (See திணை.) 2. The two classes into which creatures are divided, இயங்குதிணை and இயங்கரத்திணை, which see. (p.) இருநிதிக்கிழவன், s. Kuvêra, கு பேரன். (p.) இருநினைவு, s. See பிரபந்தம். (p.) இருபிறப்பு, s. [literally.] Two births, இருசனனம்--said of persons or things twice born--as 1. The moon, சந்திரன். 2. Birds and other oviparous creatures, முட்டையிற்பிறப்பன. (See அண்ட சம்.) 3. The teeth, பல். 4. Feathers, சிறகு. 5. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். (p.) இருபிறப்பாளர், s. The twiceborn caste--Brahmans; investiture with the sacred thread being deemed a kind or regeneration, அந்தணர். இருபெயரொட்டுப்பண்புத்தொகை, s. Omission of ஆகிய or ஆய where two nouns are used in opposition, ஓர்பண்புத் தொகை--as ஆதிபகவன். God the source (of all things.) இருபொருள், s. Learning and riches. See பொருள். (p.) இருமடங்கு, s. As much again, two-fold, இரண்டுபங்கு. இருமடியாகுபெயர், s. An ஆகு பெயர் of the second degree--as கார், black when used to signify a cloud is called ஆகுபெயர்; but when used for the rainy season, it is called இருமடியாகுபெயர். (p.) இருமணம், s. Pleasant and unpleasant odors, நற்கந்ததுர்க்கந்தங்கள். (p.) இருமரபு, s. The two ancestral lines--paternal and maternal, தாய்மரபு தந் தைமரபு. (p.) இருமனம், s. Hesitancy, dubiousness, doubt, irresolution, indecision. 2. Double-dealing, treachery. இருமை, s. Duality, a two-fold state, two, இருதன்மை. 2. The two states --the present and the future, or this life and that to come--whether as distinct from the body or as reunited with it in another birth, இம்மைமறுமை. (p.) இருவகைத்தோற்றம், s. The two classes of beings produced--சரம் and அச ரம். See தோற்றம். (p.) இருவாட்டித்தரை, s. [prov.] Land compounded of earth and clay, மணலுங் களிப்புமானநிலம். இருவாய்க்குருவி, s. A kind of bird, Hormbill, buceros, ஓர்குருவி. இருவினை, s. The two classes of moral actions--good and evil, in every one of which there is merit or demerit, leading to future births in which they are to be suffered or enjoyed, while they keep the soul from union with deity, நல்வினை தீவினை. (p.) ஈர். An adjective of இரண்டு, two --used before words beginning with vowels, &c., as இரு is used before consonants--as ஈராயிரம், two-thousand; இருபது, twenty. ஈரசைச்சீர், s. A poetic foot of two அசை, ஆசிரியச்சீர். (p.) ஈரடி, s. Two lines, இணையடி. (p.) 2. That which is bifurcate or two forked, கவர். 3. Doubtfulness, fluctuation, சந்தேகம். ஈரடிப்பயன், s. Ambiguity in conversation, equivocation, double-mindedness, உபயார்த்தம். 2. Double-dealing, acting under-handedly so as to suit both parties, கபடம். 3. Uncertainty, doubtfulness, சந்தேகம். 4. [prov.] Diverseness, disagreement--as of a report or account differently related, விகற்பம்; [ex அடி, step, course, et பயன், meaning.] ஈரடிப்பா, s. A stanza of two lines. (p.) ஈரடிமடக்கு, s. [in poetry.] Repetition of a foot or feet in two lines with different meanings, வந்தசொல்லேயிரண்டடி யினும்வரப்பாடுவது. See மடக்கு. ஈரடிவெண்பா, s. A kind of வெ ண்பா of two lines--the குறள்வெண்பா. (p.) ஈரடுக்கொலி, s. Reiterated words imitative of sound--as நெறுநெறென்றுமுறிந் தது, it broke with a reiterated crash; வண்டில்கடகடென்றோடிற்று, the carriage rolled along with a rattling noise. (p.) ஈரறம், s. The two kinds of அறம், or virtuous actions according to the shasters; viz.: இல்லறம், matrimony and its accompanying household virtues; and துறவறம், the virtues of ascetic practice. (p.) ஈரறிவுயிர், s. Beings that have the sense of feeling and tasting--as snails, shells, &c., பரிசமுஞ்சுவையுமறியும்நந்துமுதலிய செந்து. (p.) ஈராசிடைவெண்பா, s. A species of வெண்பா, with two ஆசு affixed to the end of the third foot of the second line. (p.) ஈராடி--ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] A changeable state of the wind and weather, previous to the change of monsoon, indicative of rain. 2. A calm, a lull, the failing of the wind at this season, காற்றினமைவு. 3. Fickleness, hesitation, fluctuation of mind, நிலையின்மை. இக்காரியத்திலென்மனமீராடிப்படுகின்றது. In this affair my mind wavers. ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] Two wives. ஈரி, s. A play of girls, two stones being taken up from the ground while a third is tossed in the air, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. (c.) ஈரிலைப்பயிர், s. A young shoot when two leaves appear. ஈரிழை, s. Double-thread used in some kinds of cloth--as in muslin. ஈரிழைச்சல்லா, s. A muslin whose warp consists of two untwisted threads. ஈரீற்றா, s. A cow that has had two calves. (p.) ஈருடல், s. [in mythology.] Beings possessing the form, in part, of two bodies--as Vishnu manifested in the form of man and lion, இருதன்மைத்தாயவுடல். (p.) ஈருயிர்க்காரி, s. The two-lived --used of a pregnant female. (c.) ஈரெச்சம், s. See எச்சம். ஈரொட்டு, s. Uncertainty, doubt, crisis, criticalness, state of suspense, conditional bargain. (c.) நோயாளியின்காரியமீரொட்டாயிருக்கின்றது. The case of the patient is doubtful. ஈரொட்டாகச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak doubtfully, uncertainly, ambiguously. ஈரொட்டாகவாங்க, inf. To take things conditionally, that is, if approved; or, as a merchant, to pay for them if sold. 6)

In astrology, the zodiac is divided into three equal parts of four signs each, in reference to their supposed influences--as சரராசி, the four signs auspicious to movements, as journeyings, &c., Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricornus; ஸ்திரராசி, the four signs auspicious to stationary actions or employments, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius; and உபயராசி, the four signs alike auspicious to both classes, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. இராசிக்காரன்--இராசியுள்ளவன், s.
