The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. A fabulous fiveheaded cobra, of which each head is supposed to contain a very precious gem. It is said to be found in mountainous districts and to have the power of flying. ஐந்தவித்தல், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. See கிருத்தியம். ஐமீன், s. The thirteenth lunar asterism, அத்தநாள். (p.) ஐமுகன்--ஐயானனன், s. Siva, the five-faced, சிவன். (p.) ஐமுகாஸ்திரம், s. A five-pointed arrow, பஞ்சமுகாஸ்திரம். (p.) ஐம்பது, s. Fifty. ஐம்பத்தொன்று, s. Fifty-one. ஐம்பால், s. [in grammar.] The five பால், or the genders and numbers, ஐந்து பால். 2. The five modes of dressing a woman's hair, ஐவகையாகமயிர்முடிக்கை. 3. The hair of a female, மகளிர்கூந்தல். See பால். (p.) ஐம்புலம்--ஐம்புலன், s. The five senses, பஞ்சவிஷயம். ஐம்புலத்தடங்கான், s. He who is not comprehensible by the five senses-God, கடவுள். (p.) ஐம்புலம்வென்றோர், s. Ascetics, holy persons, முனிவர். (p.) ஐம்புலனடக்கல். Subjugation of the five senses. ஐம்புலனுகர்ச்சியினிறப்பன, s. The five kinds of creatures which perish by means of the senses, viz.: 1. சுவையரல்--மீன், fish, by the taste in catching at the bait. 2. நாற்றத்தால்-வண்டு, beetles, by the smell. 3. ஊற்றினால்-யானை, elephants, by copulation. 4. ஓசையால்-அசுணம், a species of bird by harsh sounds. 5. ஒளியால்-விட்டில், a species of insect, attracted by the light. ஐம்புலன்விழையான், s. An ascetic, முனிவன். (p.) ஐம்புலாதி, s. [prov.] Anxiousness, being full of cares. ஐம்பூதம், s. The five elements, பஞ்சபூதம். ஐம்பொறி, s. The five organs of sense, பஞ்சேந்திரியம். ஐம்பொறிநுகர்ச்சி, s. Subjugating. the five senses-- ஐவருக்குந்தேவி, s. Dropada the wife of the Pandavas, துரோபதை. ஐவாய்மான், s. A cow, பசு. (திரு விளை.) (p.) ஐவாய்மிருகம், s. A bear--so called from the prehensile power of his four feet and mouth, கரடி. (p.) ஐவிரலி, s. [commonly ஐவேலி.] A creeping plant whose leaf is supposed to resemble the fingers, a pentadactyle, ஓர்கொடி, Bryonia laciniosa, L.-Note. In this plant the god Siva is said to have concealed himself when pursued by பஸ்மாசுரன், who had, by penance, obtained from him, as a boon, power to destroy all on whose head he should place his hand. ஐவிரல், s. kaṇam (p. 88) s. A particle, a trifle, சி றுமை. Wils. p. 183. KAN'A. 2. A minute portion of time, a moment, காலநுட்பம். 3. A measure of time equal to thirty கலை or four minutes, ஓர்காலஅளவு. wils. p. 261. KHAN'A. 4. A company, tribe, class, clan, flock, herd, a series, கூட்டம். 5. A body of troops. (See கணகம்.) Wils. p. 277. GAN'A. 6. Long-pepper, திப்பிலி. 7. A demon, vampire, பிசாசம். 8. [in astrology.] Asterisms classed under three heads as indicating human, infernal, and divine interference in their influence on the birth of children, நட்சத்திரங்களாற்குறிக்குமூவகைக் கணம். 9. The retinue of a deity, தேவக ணம். 1. One of the ten பொருத்தம், or series of poetry auspicious or the contrary according to the feet of which it is composed. It is modified into eight kinds, ஓர் செய்யுட்பொருத்தம். 11. One of the பொருத்தம் concerning marriage, கணப்பொருத்தம். 12. A star, விண்மீன். (p.) கணந்தோறும். Every moment. ஒருகணத்திலேவந்துவிடுவேன். The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. In astrological calculations a time of three and three-quarters to four Indian hours following the asterism that rules the day, and considered to be unlucky, &c., ஒவ்வொருநட்சத்திரத்திலுஞ்சுபகாரியங்களுக்குவிலக்கப் பட்டநேரம். 2. A leaving, forsaking, விலக் குகை. W. p. 387. TYAJYA. நட்சத்திரம்
naṭcattiram (p. 268) --நக்ஷத்திரம், s. Star in general, தாரகைப்பொது. 2. Lunar constellations, நாண்மீன், of which there are twentyseven, forming the lunar Zodiac, with an extra mansion, having no stars of its own, but which taking parts of the contiguous asterisms makes the number twenty-eight. This intercalary asterism occures between the 21st and 22nd, and is used chiefly for astrological purposes. 3. The period during which the moon is passing through an asterism. W. p. 45. NAKSHATRA. The twenty-seven asterisms beginning with Aries are in order, as follows; 1. அசுபதி, or அச்சுவினி. 2. பரணி. 3. கார்த்திகை. 4. உரோகிணி. 5. மிருகசீரிடம், or மிருகசீர்ஷம். 6. ஆதிரை, or திருவாதிரை. 7. புநர்பூசம். 8. பூசம். 9. ஆயிலியம். 1. மகம். 11. பூரம். 12. உத்திரம். 13. அஸ்தம் or அத்தம். 14. சித்திரை. 15. சுவாதி or சோதி. 16. விசாகம். 17. அனுடம் or அனுஷம். 18. கேட்டை. 19. மூலம். 2. பூராடம். 21. உத்திராடம். 22. திருவோணம். 23. அவிட்டம். 24. சதயம். 25. பூரட்டாதி. 26. உத்திரட்டாதி. 27. இரேவதி. Each asterism consists of thirteen degrees and twenty minutes of the Zodiac. There is a particular star in each called யோகம் which serves as an index to the mansion. நட்சத்திரசக்கரம், s. The lunar asterisms collectively forming a lunar Zodiac. 2. Diagram for astrological calculations, as கலப்பைச்சக்கரம், &c. நட்சத்திரசீரகம், s. A kind of cumin, star-anise. See அனீசு. நட்சத்திரதீபம், s. A kind of lamp. நட்சத்திரபதவி, s. The starry sky, as நட்சத்திரமண்டலம். 2. The visible heavens, as a place of bliss for those having a certain degree of religious merit. நட்சத்திரப்பிரமாணம், s. The length of a nakshatra. நட்சத்திரமண்டலம், s. The starry heavens. நட்சத்திரமாலை, s. [in astrol.] A treatise on the lunar constellations, ஓர்சோதிடநூல். 2. The galaxy or milky way, regarded as a string by which துருவன் turns the heavens. 3. The principal பாலை plants, and trees, are ஊசிப்பாலை, a plant, Periploca esculenta; 2. ஏழிலைம்பாலை. ஏழிலைப்பாலை, a tree, Echites scholaris, of which the Tamil and Sanscrit names are derived, from its having seven leaves around the stem; 3. காக்காய்ப் பாலை, a tree, Gelonium bifarium; 4. குட சப்பாலை--கொடிப்பாலை--கறிப்பாலை, a creeping plant, Asclepias volubilis; 5.வெட்பாலை, a plant, Nerium antidysentericum; also ஆடுதின்னாப்பாலை, திருநாமப்பாலை, நிலப்பாலை, பூப் பாலை, விழுப்பாலை, which see in their places. --The seven classes of airs are: செம்பாலை, படுமலைப்பாலை, செவ்வழிப்பாலை, அரும்பாலை, கொ டிப்பாலை, விளரிப்பாலை, மேற்செம்பாலை, which see. பாலைக்கருப்பொருள், s. Men, beasts, things, &c., the adjuncts of arid tracts. They are. 1. பாலைத்தெய்வம், the goddess, Durga, துர்க்கை. 2. பாலைக்குடிமகன், inhabitants, the வேடர், or hunter caste; 3. பாலைத்தலைவன் the chief, as காளை, 4. பா லைநிலத்தூர், the village, as குறும்பு; 5. பாலைநீர், well-water; 6. பாலைப்பண், the melody, as பஞ்சுரம்; 7. பாலைப்பறை, a small drum as துடி; 8. பாலைப்புள், the birds, as the dove, புறா; kite பருந்து; and eagle, கழுகு; 9. பாலைப்பூ, the flowers, as of பூளை, பாலை, and கள்ளி plants; 1. பாலைமரம், the trees as குரா, and மரா; 11. பாலைநிலமாக்கள் தொழில், occupation of the inhabitants-mostly plundering. கொள்ளையாடல்; 12. பாலைமாக்களூண், the food, plunder--on which they principally subsist; 13. பாலைவிலங்கு, the animals, a wild dog that chases tigers; 14. பாலையாழ், a lute of desert tracts. பாலைக்காடு, s. Paulghat district. பாலைக்காட்டுச்சோனை, s. An incessant rain, of four months in Paulghat. See சோனை. பாலைக்கிழத்தி, s. Durga. துர்க்கை. பாலைக்குருவி, s. A species of bird. பாலைநிலம்--பாலைவனம், s. A barren soil as பாலை, 2. பாலைப்பழம், s. The fruit of the பாலை tree. பாலைப்பாணி, s. Sweet juice of the பாலை fruit. 16) *
