aḷvu (p. 33) s. Measure, degree, proportion, quantity, magnitude, size, capacity, bound, limit, compass, number, standard, வரையறை. 2. The proper or required measure, the complement number, size, weight, &c., மட்டு. 3. With உம், it expresses a limited extent of measure, time, distance, &c., as அவ்வளவும், only so far, even so much. 4. Suffixed to participles, it means when, as soon as--as பார்க்குமளவில், as soon as seen. 5. A measure or thing to measure with, அளவுகருவி. There are four kinds of measurement; viz.: 1. எண்ணல், computation. 2. எடுத் தல், weight, measurement by balance. 3. முகத்தல், measurement of capacity--as dry of fluid measure. 4. நீட்டல், measurement of extension, a long measure and land measure.--Some add a fifth தெறித்தல், jerking with finger. இராசா அளவிற்கேறிற்று. It has gone up to (the limit of) the king; i. e. it is too late now to adopt measures to prevent it. காரியத்தளவிலேயொன்றுமில்லை. There is no importance in the thing--it matters not. குலத்தளவேயாகுங்குணம். According to the caste will be the disposition. அவன்வருமளவும். Till he comes. மேகமண்டலமளவும். As high as, or as far as the region of the clouds. என்னளவிலேயிப்படிநடந்தது. It has so happened to me; at least in my case, &c. தன்னளவிலே கொண்டாடிக்கொண்டான். He limited the feast to his own circle. அளவடி, s. A line containing four metrical feet, நாற்சீரால்வருமடி. அளவடிவிருத்தம், s. A விருத்தம் verse of four lines, each of which contains four feet, நேரடிவிருத்தம். அளவழித்தாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அளவறுக்க, inf. To find out, ascertain a number and decide, வரையறுக்க. அளவற்றது--அளவில்லாதது. appel. n. That which is beyond number, measure, weight, &c. அளவாக, inf. [used adverbially.] Moderately, to a limited extent, according to. அளவிட, inf. To estimate, calculate. 2. To guess, conjecture. 3. To measure, explore, fathom. 4. To investigate, examine, search into. அவனை அளவிடக்கூடாது. One cannot fathom him. அளவிடப்படாத, neg. rel. part. Incomprehensible. அளவிடை, v. noun. Measuring, admeasurement, அளவிடுகை. 2. Estimation, calculation, guess, மதிப்பிடுகை. 3. s. Weight, நிறை. 4. Capacity, extent of one's power. நிருவாகம். சத்துருவையளவிடைபார். Estimate an enemy's power. அளவியற்றாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem. அளவிறக்க, inf. To exceed the measure, the appointed limit, &c., எல் லைகடக்க. 2. To transgress, violate a rule, மீற. 3. To exceed all bounds, be immeasurable, inconceivable, எண்ணிறக்க. அளவிறந்தபொருள், s. Immense property beyond the power of calculation, a thing incomprehensible, a mystery. அளவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Immeasurableness, countlessness, immensity. அளவுகோல், s. A land measurer's rod. அளவுநாழி, s. A stamped measure. அளவுபடுத்த, inf. To measure, ascertain, to limit. அளவெடுக்க, inf. To take a measure, dimensions, &c., of a thing. அவ்வளவு--இவ்வளவு, s. So much, so many. அவ்வளவும், Even so much, only of far, that is all. எவ்வளவு, s. How much, how many. நேற்றளவு. Up to or till yesterday, in the course of yesterday. நேற்றையளவிலேசெய்தியிப்படி. The news were so up to yesterday. இன்றளவும். Until this day, in the course of to-day. 14)

aḷvai (p. 33) s. Measure, a definite quantity, அளவு. 2. Bound, limit, எல்லை. 3. A measure, or thing to measure with, அளவுக்கருவி. 4. A medium of knowledge, காட்சிமுதலியபிரமாணங்கள். 5. The name of a logical work, அளவைநூல். 6. Day, நாள். There are eight ways of obtaining the true knowledge of a thing or occurrence; viz.: 1. காட்சி, by the senses, especially the sight--by experiments, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிர மாணம். 2. அனுமானம், by inference, by drawing conclusions from what has been admitted or is supposed true--as நெருப்பிற்கு வியாப்பியம் புகையென்றறிதல், where smoke is, there is fire. 3. ஆகமம், by the testimony or assertions of great men, either orally or in writing, பெரியோர்வாய்ச்சொல். 4. அரு த்தாபத்தி, by deduction established from premises, அந்நியதாவநுபபத்தி--as இரவிலுணவி ல்லாமற் பகலுண்ணாதவனுக்குப் பருத்தல்கூடாதென் னுமுணர்ச்சி. 5. உவமானம், by similarity or likeness, comparison, மரை பசுப்போலென்னுமு ணர்ச்சி. 6. அபாவம், proof of non-existence-as முன்னில்லை, பின்னில்லை, முழுதுமில்லை, ஒன்றி ன்மற்றொன்றில்லை. 7. ஐதீகம், by traditional testimony--as இம்மாத்திற்பேயுளதென்பது, this tree is haunted by the devil. 8. சம்பவம், proof of co-existence--as ஆயிரத்தினூறுண்டெ னல், where a thousand is, there is a hundred. (p.) அளவையாகுபெயர், s. A metonymy in reference to measure, weight, number, &c. In Nannool, four kinds are given, எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், எடுத்தல ளவையாகுபெயர், முகத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், and நீட்டலளவையாகுபெயர். 15) *

kōṭṭai (p. 150) s. [loc.] A measure of grain from twenty-one to twenty-four marcals, முகத்தலளவைக்கோட்டை. 2. A quantity of grain, pepper, &c., stored in a straw covering for export, &c., நென்முதலியவற்றின் கோட்டை. கோட்டைகட்டிவைக்க, inf. To inclose grain, &c., in straw. கோட்டைப்போர், s. cēr (p. 208) s. A dry or liquid measure, a seer the twenty-fourth of a பறை, always struck in Ceylon, ஒருமுகத்தலளவு. 2. (Hind.) A weight of eight pallams (பலம்), ஓர்நிறையளவு. 3. A small corn-rick or heap, தானியப்போர். (c.) 4. [prov.] A yoke of oxen, a pair of cattle, தளை. சேர்கட்ட. inf. To deposit paddy, &c., in measures. 2. To form a heap of corn in the straw. பக்காச்சேர், s. A large seer containing twenty-four பலம். (c.) See பக்கா. 41)

cōtaṉai (p. 212) s. (Sa. S'odhana.) Examination, usually for some particular object; inspection, proof, trial, sifting, search, investigation, ஆராய்வு. 2. Assaying metals, புடமிடுகை. 3. Experiment, problem, கணக் குச்சோதனை. 4. Divine trial--as affliction or other adverse providence; chastening, தேவசோதனை. 5. [prov.] A measure commonly liquid, முகத்தலளவு. 6. (Christ. use, note proper.) Temptation, இடர். (c.) சோதனைகொடுக்க, inf. To be examined, to pass examination, as baggage, or lading. 2. To pass examination, as candidates for office. சோதனைக்காரன், s. An examiner, inspector, scrutineer. 2. A searcher of a vessel, &c., at a custom house. 3. A censor. சோதனைபண்ண--சோதனைபார்க்க, inf. To examine, sift, scrutinize, search, try. 2. To try as the deity the sincerity of a worshipper by adversity, affliction or other means, தெய்வஞ்சோதிக்க. சோதனைபண்ணிப்பார்க்க, inf. To find out a result by experiment. நகரிசோதனை, s. muk (p. 356) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To draw water, &c., as மொள்ள. 2. [for மோ க்க.] To smell. 3. To measure grain or liquids with a measure of capacity. முகத்தல், v. noun. Drawing water, &c., மொள்ளல்; or baling, நொள்கல். முகத்தலளவு, s. measurement of capacity, மொண்டளக்குமளவு. முகத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், s. Metonymy, by which a measure of capacity--as a gallon--is put for the thing measured. See ஆகுபெயர். ஆழவமுக்கிமுகப்பினும், ஆழ்கடலில் நாழிமுகவாது நானாழி.
