Added to the positive, this word makes a comparative, as மந்தத ரம், slower, from மந்தம் and தரம்; when doubled it expresses succession, generation, as தரம்தரமாய்வாழ்கின்றான், compounded with அதரம், it means, quality or rank, as தராதரம், which see. நான்அநேகதரம்சொன்னேன். I told him many times. எத்தனையாந்தரம். What sort? அந்தந்தத்தரம். Each sort, rank, degree, &c., 2. Each time. தரத்துக்குத்தரம். From time to time. 2. One sort equal to another. தரபடி, s. A middling sort of commodities or goods. 2. A settled dimension of fields or villages. 3. An under-garment. தரம்பிரிக்க, inf. To sort, to assort. தரம்போட, inf. To assess a tax on land according to the soil. (c.) தரமறிய, inf. To know the rank, character, &c., of a person. தரவழி, s. A kind, sort, class, pair, assortment. அந்தந்தத்தரவழி. Each, or every rank. முதலாந்தரம்--முதற்றரம், s. The first kind, prime, best. 2. The first time. இரண்டாந்தரம், s. The second class or kind. 2. The second time. நடுத்தரம், s. The middling sort. கடைத்தரம், s. The last or worst kind. தராதரம், s. Different sorts, kinds, qualities, ranks. 2. Ranks or degrees, as differing one from another. தராதரமறிந்துபேச, inf. To know how to speak according to the rank of a person. தராதரமானவன், appel. n. A respectable person, a man of good circumstances. 18)

tāy (p. 234) s. Mother, அன்னை. 2. Dam, female parent of animals in general, விலங்கின் தாய். 3. [in combination.] A maternal aunt, &c. (See சிறியதாய், சிறியதாய்முறை and பெரியதாய்.) 4. Origin, that which is primitive, chief, or principal, முதன்மை. (c.) தாய், is also applied to five kinds of nurses. 1. பாராட்டுத்தாய். 2. ஊட்டுந்தாய். 3. முலைத்தாய். 4. கைத்தாய். 5. செவிலித்தாய். which see. Another five-fold classification is given of persons held in similar esteem with mothers. 1. அரசன்தேவி, king's wife. 2. குருவின்தேவி, wife of the guru. 3. அண் ணன்தேவி, elder brother's wife. 4. தன்தே வியைஈன்றவள், wife's mother. 5. தன்னைஈன் றவள், one's own mother. தாய்ப்பொன்னிலும்மாப்பொன்எடுக்கிறவன். He who would steal one-twentieth even of his mother's gold--a maxim on the thievishness of goldsmiths. தாய்முகங்காணாதபிள்ளை. A child early bereaved of its mother. தாய்முலைப்பாலிலும்உப்புப்பார்க்கிறவன். One who tries even his mother's milk to see if it is not salt; i. e. a distrustful, mistrustful, sceptical person. தாய்சொற்சிறந்தவாசகமில்லை. No word is like that of a mother. (Avv.) தாயினும்அன்பர்கர்த்தர். The Divine Being more loving than a mother. (Christ. usage.) தாய்க்குள்ளதுமகளுக்கு. As the mother, so the daughter. தாயாடு, s. A dam. தாயேடு--தாயோலை, s. [prov.] The original book, முதலேடு. தாயைக்கொல்லி, appel. n. A matricide. 2. A villain, a wretch, மாபாவி. 3. [prov.] Land of the first quality, முதற்றரமானகாணி. தாய்க்கிராமம், s. A principal village or hamlet. தாய்க்கிழங்கு, s. The principal esculent root. தாய்ச்சீட்டு, s.
