To stumble, trip, strike the foot against, தடக்க. இடறொட்டமெனநெடியவரையுருட்டி. Rolling the towering mountains, as one might dash to pieces a pot-sherd with his feet. (இராமா.) கரடியிடறிவிளையாடுஞ்சுரம். The forest where the bear plays, knocking about (the fruits, &c.) with his feet. பரிகாரர்தலையிடறி. (An elephant) striking off the heads of horsemen. (பெரியபுராணம்.) காலிடறிவிழுந்தான். He stumbled and fell. பகைவரின்தலையையானையின்காலினாலிடறுவித்தான். He caused the heads of the enemies to be struck off, with the foot of an elephant. இடறுகட்டை, s. ōtu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓதினேன், வேன், ஓத, v. a. To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. To read, learn, recite audibly in order to commit to memory, படிக்க. 3. To speak, say, declare, சொல்ல. 4. To repeat prayers--as the Romanists and Mohomedans, செபமுச்சரிக்க. 5. To dismiss one with an excuse without complying with his request, to decline compliance, விலக்க. 4. To do work carelessly, to slight, act with eye service, pass time idly, கழப்ப. 5. To put one off, delay, postpone, evade, தவணைசொல்ல. 6. To lengthen out a work, delay in performance, நீட்டிக்க. வேலையைக்கடத்திப்போட்டான். In Tinnevelly, this word is invariably used to signify a prisoner and not a watchman, which latter is called காவற்காரன். காவலிருக்க, inf. To be on guard, to keep watch, காவலாயிருக்க. 2. To be on guard, to act as sentries, watchmen, &c. 3. To defend the body by wearing armor, &c., or the head by oils, &c., against disease, which either has attacked the lower extremities, or indicates coma, &c. காவல்செய்ய, inf. To protect, to defend. 2. [prov.] To pass a straw-rope over a heap of corn in the field, or make with it diagrams on the ground, &c., to defend the grain from demons. 3. To place an image of Ganesa (being a handful of moist cow-dung) on the top of a heap of corn before winnowing, as a security from demons.--Note. If it is measured, it is deemed secure against their attack. காவல்பண்ண, inf. To protect, defend, take care of, watch over. 2. To nourish, cherish, provide for. 3. To imprison, to keep under guard, to confine. காவல்மாற, inf. To be relived, changed, &c.--as sentinels or a watch. காவல்மாற்ற, inf. To relieve guard, change watchmen, sentinels, &c. காவல்முறை, s. Turns in watching. காவல்மேரை, s. Share of grain given to the watchman of a village from the thrashing floor. காவல்விட, inf. To release from watching, guarding, &c. காவற்கடவுள்--காவற்பெருமான், s. Vishnu, as the preserver of the world, விஷ்ணு. காவற்கட்டு, s. [prov.] A bundle of paddy sheaves for the watchman. காவற்கட்டை, s. [prov.] A fire-brand kept burning to ward off the female demon கொற்றி from a woman in child-birth, when exposure is greater than at other times. 2. A clump of wood kept burning through the night near a patrol-hut. காவற்கப்பல், s. A reconnoitring vessel, a guard-ship. காவற்காடு, s. A jungle or forest defence, காட்டாண். 2. A reserved forest. காவற்காரர், s. Watchmen, sentinels, a patrol, காப்போர். காவற்கூடம்--காவற்சாலை--காவல்ஸ்த லம், s. A guard-room; a prison-house. காவற்புரி, s. [prov.] A straw-rope thrown over the heap of corn in the field to defend it from demons. அருங்காவல், s. A very strict or powerful guard. தலைக்காவல், s. The main guard. தூக்கிரிக்காவல், s. An overseer of a village. மெல்லுயிர்க்குங்காவல், s. A support or cordial to the languishing mind. 28)

kuti (p. 120) க்கிறேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To jump, leap, spring, bound, skip; to leap from, to rebound, பாய. 2. To spirt out, splash up--as water; to spring, to be brisk or active--as quicksilver, இரச முதலியனருசிக்க. 3. (fig.) To be boisterous, frolic, haughty, arrogant, பெருமையிலேதுள்ள. 4. v. a. to pass over, to leap over, கடக்க. 5. To surpass, overcome, to escape from, கடந்துபோக. குதித்துக்குதித்துமாவிடித்தாலும்புழுக்கைக்கொருகொ ழுக்கட்டையே. Though the poor maidservant beat flour ever so hard and briskly, she will have but a small கொழுக்கட்டை cake. குதித்துப்பாய, inf. To leap over, to leap down from a carriage, &c. 2. (fig.) To be insolent or wanton, to be unjust, cruel, &c. குதித்துவிழ, inf. To jump into, to plunge, to dive. 2. To jump down from a height. குதி, v. noun. A jump, a leap, jumping, குதிப்பு. 2. Energy, exertion, முயற்சி. குதிகொள்ள, inf. To frisk, to leap, to play about, to revel, sport, frolic, &c., through intoxication or excessive mirth; to be jolly, high-spirited, ஆனந்தக்கூத் தாட. 2. Of the soul; 1. களாபடனம், education, communication of knowledge, கல் விபயிற்றுகை; 2. வியாதாகாரம், comfort to the afflicted, consolation of mind, துயர்தீர்க்கை; 3. நிர்க்கத்தண்டனம், relieving from punishment, தண்டம்நீக்குகை; 4. சந்தேகவாரணம், removing doubts, contingency, &c., ஐயந் தேற்றுகை; 5. அன்னியகுணசகனம், hearing of the superiority of others without envy, and enduring their infirmities with patience, பிறந்குணத்தழுக்காறின்றிப்பொறுத்தல்; 6. பரதிருதுனயோகம், forgetting the evils inflicted by others and seeking to do them good, பிறராற்செய்யப்படுந்தீமையைமறந்தூன்றிநி னைக்கை; 7. பார்த்ததேவப்பிராத்திதம், praying for the prosperity and good of others, பிறர்நிமித்தந்தேவனைவழிபடுதல். Those regarding the body or சத்தாங் கோபகராம் are: 1. அன்னம், food, giving boiled rice, உணவு; 2. பானம், drink, குடிக்க நீர்; 3. அம்பரம், raiment, வஸ்திரம்; 4. மந்திரம், a dwelling, இடம்; 5. தாசபாலனம். preservation from slavery, அடிமைகாத்தல்; 6. காராமயத்திரிதயமோசனம், removing the three afflictions of captivity, சிறைநோய் மூன்றுந்தீர்த்தல். viz.: restraint from the calls of nature, மலசலவாதை; corporal punishments, சரீரதண்டனை; chains, fetters, விலங்கு போடல். 7. சவச்சேமம், burial, பிரேதமடக்கல். There are eight other kinds of benevolence. 1. பிறர்க்குப்பொருள்வரவையுவத்தல், rejoicing in a neighbor's wealth; 2. பிறர்செல்வம்பொறுத்தல், being content in seeing a neighbor's welfare; 3. பிறர்கருமத் திற்குடன்படுதல், assisting in other's business, with interest; 4. தீமைக்கஞ்சல், fearing to do evil; 5. பிறர்கருமமுடிக்கவிரைதல், hastening to assist others; 6. பிறரையந் தீர்த்தல், removing other's doubts; 7. நன் மைகடைப்படித்தல், preserving in doing good; 8. பிறர்துயர்க்கிரங்கல், commiserating the distress of others; sympathizing with the afflicted. 19) *
