aẕuttu (p. 33) கிறேன், அழுத்தினேன், வேன், அழுத்த, v. a. To press, press hard as in writing with a heavy hand, impress, imprint, அழுந்தச்செய்ய. 2. To make firm, compact, உரப்பிக்க. 3. To set diamonds, &c., enchase, inlay fine gold in jewels, பதிக்க. 4. To repeat, reiterate sentiments or arguments in order to make an impression on the minds of others, to insist upon, maintain tenaciously, கருத்திலிருத்த. (c.) இதை யுன்மனதிலே யழுத்திப்பார். Imprint this on your mind and attend to it. அழுத்திப்பேச, inf. To speak impressively, emphatically. அழுத்து--அழுத்துகை, v. noun. Closeness. 6)

āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

iṟuku (p. 57) கிறது, இறுகினது, ம், இறுக, v. n. To become tight--as a bandage, knot, &c., to be strained, be close, hard, compact, &c.--as land dried by the sun, அழுந்த. 2. To grow thick in consistency, to coagulate, to be inspissated, be clotted, உறைய. 3. To congeal, become hard--as wax, metals, &c., to become dry--as mortar, clay, &c., கட்டியாக. 4. To become firm--as a loose tooth, பெலக்க. 5. To be close, rich, luxuriant--as growing corn, fruitful trees, &c., செறிய. எண்மண்டையிறுகிப்போயிற்று. My head feels day (needing oil and bathing). சளியிறுகிற்று. The phlegm (in the throat) is become hard. இறுகக்கட்ட, inf. To brace or fasten tight, close, compact, &c., அழுந் தக்கட்ட. இறுகத்தழுவ, inf. To hug, embrace closely, இறுகவணைக்க. இறுகப்பிசைய, inf. To knead hard, make close by kneading, அழுந்தப்பி சைய. இறுகப்பிடிக்க, inf. To hold fast, grasp tight, அழுந்தப்பிடிக்க. 2. To be stingy, parsimonious, tenacious, செலவு செய்யாதிருக்க. இறுகவிறுக, [adverbially.] Very tight, drawn tighter and tighter, அழுந்த வழுந்த. இறுகினகை, s. Close-fistedness, parsimony, ஈயாதகை. இறுகினதேகம், s. A firm, compact body. இறுகினமனம், s. An unrelenting heart, a close or parsimonious mind. இறுக்கம், v. noun. Tightness, closeness, compactness, hardness, tenacity, அழுத்தம். 2. Closeness of weather, sultriness, ஒடுக்கம். 3. Parsimoniousness, niggardliness, tenaciousness, கையழுத்தம். 4. Strictness, rigidness, pressure, நெருக்கம். இறுக்கமானகாலம், s. Sultry weather. 2. Hard times. 23)

kṭi (p. 87) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To bite, bite off, crop, gnaw, nibble, grasp with, or hold in the mouth, to champ, பல்லாற்கறிக்க. 2. To hurt, pinch, gall --as new shoes, a new ring, &c., செருப்புமு தலியகாலையழுத்த. காதையிந்தக்கடுக்கன்மிகக்கடிக்கிறது. This earring pinches my ear very much. காலைச்செருப்புக்கடித்துப்போட்டது. The sandal has galled my foot. கையைக்கடியாமலிருக்கப்பார்க்கிறார். He takes care that the expense shall not fall on himself. சற்றுப்பல்லைக்கடித்துக்கொண்டிரு. Be patient, hold still a little, lit. bite your teeth and be still. ஒருமனிதனைக்கடித்துப்பிடுங்கலாமோ. Should one fall foul on a person and compel him? முயிறுகடித்துப்பிடித்துக்கொண்டது. The red ant is biting me, has laid fast hold of me. கடிநாய், s. A vicious, snappish dog, கடிக்கிறநாய். 2. (fig.) A surly person, a cynic, துஷ்டன். கடிப்பான், s. Condiment, a sauce, கறி. கடிவாளம், s. A bridle, கலினம். கடிவாளம்போடுதல்--கடிவாளம்மா ட்டுதல், v. noun. Bridling a horse. கடிவாளம்வாங்க--கடிவாளங்கழற்ற, inf. To unbridle. கடிவாளம்வெட்டுதல், v. noun. Slackening and pulling in the reins. கடிவாளவார், s. Reins of a bridle. கடி, v. noun. Biting, கடிக்கை. 2. A bite, கடித்தவடு. கடிபிடி, v. noun. [vul.] Scuffle, snarling, biting, &c. கடிவாய், s. The lips of a wound occasioned by a bite. கடிவாய்வடு, s. The scar remaining after a wound caused by a bite, a cicatrice. காணாக்கடி, s. The bite of an insect, &c., concealed. பொய்க்கடி, s. A bite which does not hurt--as that of a dog in play. 48)

kū (p. 133) A compound letter of க் and ஊ. 2. s. The earth--as கு, பூமி. 3. (Sans. Koo, sounding) Clamor, கூக்குரல். கூகூவென--கூகாவென, inf. To bawl out, to utter loud cries, lamentation, &c. 2. To complain. 3. To be constantly calling, whooping, scolding, driving to work. கூகூவென்றலறியழுதான். He cried with a loud screeching sound. கூக்குரல், s. Whooping, outcry, uproar, bawling, clamor, பேரொலி; [ex குரல்.] கூக்குரலமருகிறது. The great noise ceases. கூக்குரலாய்க்கிடக்கிறது. There is a great clamor, bustle. 2. It is noised. கூக்குரலமர்த்த, inf. To still or quiet the clamor. கூக்குரலிட--கூக்குரல்செய்ய--கூக்குரல் பண்ண, inf. To whoop, clamor, cry out. கூவென, inf. To call, cry out, or bawl, through pain or otherwise. 2. To make a noise; to cry, to whoop--as a signal or answer to one calling; to halloo, to huzza. 3. To utter reiterated cries. 2) *

pūṉai (p. 331) s. [poet. பூஞை.] A cat.--For கடு வன்பூனை, காட்டுப்பூனை, புழுகுப்பூனை, பெட்டைப் பூனை, see these words. (c.) பூனைசீறுதல். Hissing of a cat in anger. பூனைகுறுக்கேபோகின்றது. The cat comes across the road, considered a bad omen. பூனையழுதல். Mewing of a cat. பூனையுறுமுதல். Growling of a cat. பூனைபால்குடிப்பதுபோலே. As a cat [shutting its eyes] drinks the milk; i. e., one shutting his own eyes to his faults, thinks them hidden from others. பூனைக்கச்சி, s. An herb, ஓர்செடி. (Old Dic.) பூனைக்கண், s. Eyes like a cat. 2. A gem, cat's eye, பூனைக்கண்வைடூரியம். பூனைக்கண்ணன், s. [fem. பூனைக்கண் ணி.] A man with cat-like eyes. பூனைக்கண்புருடராகம்--பூனைக்கண்வை டூரியம், s. A gem. See பூனைக்கண், 2. பூனைக்கழற்சி, s. A species of கழற்சி, a grey colored creeper. பூனைக்கழற்சிக்கொட்டை, s. Seeds of பூனைக்கழற்சி, used medicinally. பூனைக்காஞ்சொறி, s. A kind of nettle, Tragia cannabina. பூனைக்காய்ச்சி, s. An empty or blasted ear, or crop. பூனைக்காய்வேளை, s. A shrub; Galega villosa. பூனைக்காலி, s. A perennial climbing plant, whose root is used in choleramorbus, ஓர்செடி, Dolichos pruriens, L. பூனைக்கீரை, s. A plant, ஓர்கீரை, Ipomia pestigridis. பூனைக்குட்டி, s. A kitten. பூனைச்சம்பந்தம், s. The grasp of Deity on the soul. See சம்பந்தம். பூனைத்திசை, s. south-east, தென்கிழக்கு. See திசை. பூனைபோலேயிருக்க, inf. To act with affected humility. பூனைப்பிடுக்கன்--பூனைமடி, s. A kind of herb, ஓர்செடி, Crotalaria nummularia. பூனைமயிர், s. Grey hair in men, like the cat. 2. As பூனைக்கழற்சி plant. பூனைவணங்கி, appel. n. The குப்பை மேனி plant; (lit.) cat worshipped.

māyōmāyōveṉ (p. 350) inf. [prov.] To cry, as a cat, பூனையழுதற்குறிப்பு.

mūkku (p. 361) s. Nose, nostril, நாசி. 2. A bird's beak, பறவைமூக்கு. 3. Spout of a pot, or kettle, கலயத்தின்மூக்கு. 4. Lip of a cup or lamp, விளக்கின்மூக்கு. 5. Chit-point of a seed, தானியத்தின்மூக்கு. இல்லிமூக்கு--சில்லிமூக்கு, s. A bleeding nose. மூக்கடைப்பு, v. noun. Hinderance of breath through the nostrils. மூக்கணாங்கயிறு-மூக்காங்கயிறு, s. The rope or string which is put through a bullock's nose for a bridle. மூக்காங்கயிறுகுத்துகிறது. Perforating a bullock's nose for the string. மூக்கந்தண்டு, s. [com. மூக்காந்தண்டு.] Bridge of the nose. மூக்கரிகத்தி, s. [poet. குளிரி.] An instrument for nipping betel-leaves. (சது.) மூக்கறிவு, s. Knowing by smell. மூக்கறை, s. A person with an amputated nose; in contempt, மூக்கறைப்பயல். மூக்கறைச்சி--மூக்கறைப்பெண், s. [masc. மூக்கறையன்.] A woman deprived of her nose by amputation or disease. மூக்கறையனுக்குவாழ்க்கைப்பட்டால்முன்னும்போ கவிடான்பின்னும்போகவிடான். A woman whose husband has no nose can neither go forward nor backward; applied to a fickleminded master. மூக்கன், s. A man with a large nose. See காக்கைமூக்கன். மூக்காங்கொழுந்து--மூக்குக்கொழுந்து, s. End of the nose. மூக்காலேபோகிறசீவன். A living being which breathes its last by the nose; said of men in contempt. மூக்காலேயழுதல், v. noun. Snivelling, crying through the nose. மூக்கிலி, appel. n. A plant, Portalaca meridiana, சொக்களிப்பூடு. 2. As மூக்கறை. மூக்குக்கண்ணாடி, s. [high dialect சுலோ சனம்.] A pair of spectacles. மூக்குக்குத்துதல், v. noun. Perforating the nose of a child born after the death of two previous children, to preserve its life. மூக்குச்சளி--மூக்கூளை, s. Mucus of the nose. மூக்குச்சாத்திரம், s. See சரசாஸ்திரம். மூக்குச்சிந்த--மூக்குச்சீற, inf. [also சளிச்சிந்த.] To blow the nose. மூக்குத்தளுக்கு, s. A gold-ring worn in one nostril, by some women. மூக்குத்தி, s. A nose-ornament, or jewel. மூக்குத்திபோட்டிருக்கிறாள். She wears a nose-jewel. மூக்குத்தூள்--மூக்குப்பொடி, s. Snuff. மூக்குப்பிளவை, s. An ulcer on the nose. மூக்குப்பூருதல், v. noun. [vul.] Perforating the nose. மூக்குமயிர், s. Hair in the nostrils. மூக்குமயிர்பிடுங்கினாலாட்பாரங்குறையுமா. Will one's weight be diminished by pulling out the hair from the nostrils?--said of mean savings. [prov.] மூக்குவாளி, s. A ring worn in one nostril. மூக்குறிஞ்ச, inf. See உறிஞ்சு, v. மூக்கைச்சுளித்தல்--மூக்கைநெறித்தல், v. noun. Turning up the nose. மூக்கைத்தீட்டுதல், Whetting the beak as a bird. மூக்கையுமுகத்தையுங்காட்டுதல். Showing an alluring face, as a courtezan. 2. Looking sullen, displeased, &c. பிள்ளைமூக்கையுமுகத்தையுங்காட்டிக்கொண்டிருந் தாலேபோதும். If the child would only shew its [pretty] face and nose, it would suffice; said by a mother after its death. மூக்கொற்றி, s. A gold ring set with a stone or jewel. மூக்கொற்றிக்காய், s.
