The name of a certain man who was praised by ஔவையார், supposed to be a shephered, ஔவையார் கேர வைபாடப்பெற்றவன். (c.) 6. (St.) An unchaste woman, வசவி. (p.) அசதிக்கோவை, s. The name of a book wherein a shepherd named அசதி is praised by ஔவையார்; it contains four hundred stanzas like all கோவை books. அசதிசன்னி, s. Apoplexy. (M. Dic.) அசதியற, (used adverbially.) Attentively, giving the whole attention, free from other dares. காதலர்தாய்தந்தைவைகுழி அசதியாடிலர், they indulge not in laughter in the presence of the father and mother of their husbands. 64) *

Protection, help, assistance, accessoriness to a crime, &c., உதவி. 7. Accompaniment, attendance, adjunct, துணை. 8. A yoke of oxen with a prefix of number; as, ஓரணை, one yoke of oxen, ஈரணை, two yokes of oxen, மூவணை, three yokes of oxen. வெள்ளம்வருமுன்னேயணைபோடவேண்டும், Before the flood comes and the water rise, we must cast up the dam. அணைக்கட்டு, s. An anicut. அணைசொல், s. A word spoken to assist another, a prompting, துணைச்சொல். 2. An expletive, அசைச்சொல். அணையாடை, s. A clout or strip of cloth put under an infant, ஏணைத்துகில். 2. [local.] Cloth tied over the navel of an infant, தொப்புளிறுக்குஞ்சீலை. பஞ்சணை, s. The five kinds of beds, or mattresses. தலையணை, s. A pillow. புல்லணை, A layer of grass. பூவணை, s. A bed of flowers. முன்னணை, s. A crib, a manger. 2. The court before a house, the hall. 44)

aṉukku (p. 33) கிறேன், அனுக்கினேன், வேன், அனுக்க, v. a. To distress, cause to suffer, oppress one, வருத்த. (p.) 2. To touch or strike undesignedly--as in the play, கொக்கான், ஒன்றோடொன்றுமுட்டச்செய்ய. தீங்கரும்பனுக்குமாங்குயிற்கிளவி. ayr (p. 22) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், அயர, v. a. To do, perform, execute, discharge duties, rites, &c., exercise, practise, செய்ய. In this meaning it seems commonly, associated with pleasant and gratifying sensations, as, விருந்தயர, to perform the rites of hospitality. 2. v. n. To faint, swoon, languish, தளர. 3. To lose the power of consciousness, as in faintness, drowsiness, sleep, &c., சோர. 4. To become weary, droop, இளைக்க. விளையாட்டயர்ந்தான். He has played. அவன்கண்ணயர்ந்ததைப்பார்த்து. Seeing him drowsy. (பஞ். 8.) அயரப்போட--அயரவிட, inf. To let rest for a better opportunity, as thieves, till persons are less on their guard, or as persons in a law suit. அயர்ந்தநித்திரை, s. Deep sleep, profound sleep. அயர்ச்சி, v. noun. Forgetfulness, மறதி. 2. Languor, faintness, spiritlessness, உணர்வழிவு. 3. Laziness, drowsiness, சோம்பு. 4. Weakness, பலவீனம். 5. āṭu (p. 38) s. A goat, sheep, (the word is common to both,) அசம். (c.) 2. The sign Aries of the zodiac, மேடவிராசி. 3. Victory, success, வெற்றி. (p.) ஆடுதின்னாப்பாலை, s. A plant, (lit.) that which the goat will not eat, புழுக்கொல்லி, Aristolochia bracteata, L. See பாலை. ஆடுமாடு, s. Cattle, the mixed multitude of cow and sheep kinds. The varieties are காட்டாடு, a wild sheep; குறும் பாடு, a crump-horned, fleecy sheep; கொடி யாடு, வெள்ளாடு or காராடு, a long legged sheep or goat; செம்மறியாடு, a reddish sheep; பள்ளையாடு, a prolific goat or goat of low size, and வரையாடு, a mountain sheep. ஆட்டிறைச்சி, s. Mutton. ஆட்டுக்கடா, s. A he goat or ram, ஆணாடு. ஆட்டுக்கடாத்தானம், s. The gift of a he goat, with money, to avert or counteract the evil effects of an unpropitious planetary influence--made to a Brahman who is to offer incantations for the party for a certain number of days. ஆட்டுக்கல், s. The bezoar of the sheep, பாஷாணத்தொன்று. ஆட்டுக்கால், s. The அடம்பு creeper. ஆட்டுக்காற்கல், s. Coral stone, கொக்கைக்கல். ஆட்டுக்கிடை, s. A sheep-fold. ஆட்டுக்குட்டி, s. A lamb or kid. ஆட்டுச்செவிப்பதம், s. A certain immature stage in the growth of the kernel of the cocoanut, the maturest state in which the இளநீர் can be eaten, தேங்காய்வழுக்கைப்பருவம். 9)

āṭu (p. 38) கிறேன், ஆடினேன், வேன், ஆட, v. n. To move, wave, shake, vibrate, swing, அசைய. 2. To dance, play, sport. gesticulate, to act a part in play, கூத்தாட. 3. (p.) To wash, bathe, play in water, குளிக்க. 4. To war, fight, join in battle, பொர. 5. To copulate, புணர. 6. [in combination.] To do, to act, செய்ய. 7. To speak, சொல்ல. பணத்துக்காடுகிறான். He is urgently soliciting money. ஆடவை, s. Place of dancing, நிருத்தசபை. ஆடி, s. A dancer. ஆடித்திரிய, inf. To make much ado about a thing. 2. to go around or be too much in company. ஆடுகால், s. The supporters of a lever for a well-sweep. ஆடுதொடை, s. The inner fleshy part of the thigh. ஆடுமாலை, s. [prov.] A gay, lively, laughing girl, young woman. ஆடல், v. noun. Moving, shaking, rocking, &c. 2. Fighting, battle, war. 3. Being powerful. 4. Victory. 5. Playing. 6. Coition. 7. Dancing. 8. Washing, bathing. 9. Boasting, friendly word or conversation. 1. Saying. ஆடல்பாடல், s. Singing and dancing. ஆடற்றரு, s. A dancing song used in comedies. ஆட்டம், v. noun. Motion, vibration, agitation, vacillation, rocking, swinging, rolling or pitching (at sea, &c.), அசைவு. 2. Dance, play, game, prank, an act of play, a turn-about, a turn, once playing the game, விளையாட்டு. 3. Likeness, the assumption of a character, profession, conduct, shape in imitation, தன்மை. 4. Moving about, energy, vigor, action, முயற்சி. (c.) அங்கேபோக ஆட்டமாடுகிறான். He insists on going there, (contrary to advice.) இந்த ஆட்டத்துக்கெல்லாமவனசையான். He will not be moved by this agitation. அவன் ஆட்டந்தீர்ந்தது. He power, bustle, agitation, harassing, &c. has come to an end. அவனிரண்டாட்டம் விளையாடினான் ஓராட்டந் தோற்றுப்போனான். He played two games and lost one of them. ஆட்டமடித்தல், v. noun. A play among children in which the புள்ளு, or small stick, being swung round so as to fly t a distance, is struck by the கிட்டி, or larger stick. ஆட்டமெடுக்க, inf. To enter on a rash or odd enterprise, to beat another in the above play. 10)

āṭṭi (p. 38) s. A lady, a woman of rank, தலைவி. 2. A woman in general, பெண். 3. An affix joined to some nouns forming an appellative--as மனையாட்டி, பெண்டாட்டி, மலை யாட்டி; [ex ஆள், rule.] 15)

ālai (p. 42) s. A press for pressing sugarcane, &c., கரும்பாலை. 2. (p.) Vinous or spirituous liquor, கள். 3. (fig.) Oppression, affliction, உபத்திரவம். ஆலையில்லாவூருக்கிருப்பைப்பூச்சருக்கரை. The flower of the இருப்பை tree is sugar, where there is no sugar-cane-press; i. e. a person of mean abilities is esteemed in those places, where men of superior talents are rare. ஆலைபாய்தல், v. noun. Working at the sugar-cane-press. (p.) 2. (c.) Being undecided, vacillating, மனச்சுழற்சி. ஆலைபாயரவம். The sound of working at the sugar-cane-press. (சேதுப்.) ஆலைமாலை, s. Trouble, vexation, அலைச்சல். ஆலையாட்ட, inf. To press sugarcane in the mill, to express juice in the sugar-cane-press. 29) *
