akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். arngku (p. 22) கிறேன், அரங்கினேன், வேன், அரங்க, v. n. To become depressed, lowered, pressed down, அழுந்த. (p.) அரங்க, inf. [used adverbially.] Thoroughly, entirely. (p.) மரத்தையரங்கத்தறி. Prune the tree thoroughly. நூலரங்கக்கற்றோர். Those who are well versed in a science. அரங்கல், v. noun. Becoming depressed, lowered, pressed down. 41)

irngku (p. 48) கிறேன், இரங்கினேன், வே ன், இரங்க, v. n. To pity, compassionate, commiserate, பரிதபிக்க. 2. To grieve, regret, relent, to feel concern, anxiety, துன் பப்பட. 3. To weep, cry, அழ. 4. (p.) To sound, resound, ஒலிக்க. போனநரட்கிரங்கவும்வரும். And regret may ensue for the days past (in vain.) இரங்கல், v. noun. Weeping, &c., அழுதல். 2. s. krai (p. 96) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய v. n. To dissolve, melt--as salt, sugar, &c.; to be macerated in water, reduced to a liquid or slime; to relax in consistency by moisture, கரைந்துபோக. 2. To waste away as earth by rain, &c., to be washed away, மண்கரைய. 3. To be emaciated--as the body, இளைக்க. 4. To sound, make a noise, பெரிதொலிக்க. 5. To weep, cry-as a child, whine, cry aloud, அழ. 6. To call, shout, அழைக்க. 7. To tell, speak, சொல்ல. 8. To be over-ripe --as fruits, to be well ripe, become mellow, பழம்பதனழிய. அவன்கையிலிருந்தபணமெல்லாங்கரைந்துபோயிற்று. The money he had is all wasted away. கனமழைபெய்ததினாலேசுவரெல்லாங்கரைந்துபோ யிற்று. The whole wall has been washed away by the heavy rain. மகன்பட்டதைக்கண்டுமனங்கரைந்துநொந்தான்..... When he saw the sufferings of his son, he pined away through grief. கட்டிகரைந்துபோயிற்று. The tumor is reduced by external applications. ஈறுகரைகின்றது. The gum is wasting away. கரைகன்று, s. A slink calf. கரைகுட்டி, s. A slink production. கரைந்தபழம், s. A mellow ripe fruit. கரையப்பாடம்பண்ண, inf. To learn--as a lesson, &c., perfectly. சரீரங்கரைந்துபோக, inf. To waste --as the body, to be emaciated. செல்வங்கரைந்துபோக, inf. To waste--as riches. கரைதல், v. noun. Dissolution, melting. 2. Calling, அழைத்தல். 3. A clamor, ஆரவாரம். 4. Pity, இரங்கல். 5. Sounding, ஒலித்தல். 6. Speech, சொல்லு தல். 7. A great cry, பேரொலி. கரையல், v.noun. Melting, dissolving, dissolution, solution, solvency, கரைதல். 2. Any thing dissolved, emaciated, reduced, &c., கரைந்தது. கரையல்நூல், v. noun. Loose yarn that easily parts. கரையற்பனங்கட்டி, s. Jaggary softened by damp. கரைவு, v. noun. kl (p. 96) --கல்லு, கிறேன், கல்லினேன், கல்லுவேன், கல்ல, v. a. To work away earth, pebbles, &c., gradually, அகழ. 2. To dig out by little and little--as a hole, a tank, &c., to hollow, தோண்ட. 3. To scoop out --as a nut, துருவ. 4. To wash away earth, &c., by little and little-- as following water, நீர்கல்ல. 5. To eat away--as caustic, அரிக்க. 6. [prov.] To catch and tear up the fibre in an ola when writing--as a style by being too sharp. எழுத்தாணிக்கூர்கல்ல. இக்காரங்கல்லிக்கல்லியெடுத்துப்போடும். This caustic will eat away (the proud flesh). மலைகல்லியெலிபிடிக்க. To excavate a mountain to catch a rat; i. e. to take great pains or be at great expense for little profit. கல்லிக்கல்லிப்பாய, inf. kvi (p. 98) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To cover, over-spread, bent in or over, overshadow--as branches of trees, the heavens, clouds, &c.; to canopy, over-spread, bend over, வளைய. 2. To be eager, intent, earnest; to have the mind bent upon a thing, விரும்ப. (p.) மேகங்கள்மலைச்சிகரத்தைக்கவிந்துகொண்டன. The clouds have covered the mountain top. அவர்மனங்கவிந்திருக்கின்றது. He is very eager after it. வான்கவிந்தவையகமெல்லாம்பெறினும். Though the whole world canopied by the heavens be thy reward. கவிதை, v. noun. Bending, being concave, கலிவு. 2. s. An umbrella, குடை. 3. kāy (p. 104) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To bear fruit; to yield, produce, form--as fruit, காய்காய்க்க. 2. To form hard bunches, callous parts, knots, warts. excrescence. &c., on the body--as from wounds, walking, using tools, &c., தழும்புண்டாக. 3. to grow callous, காய்ப்புக்காய்க்க. கைகாய்த்தாற்கமுகுகாய்க்கும். If the hands become callous with watering it, the areca will bear fruit; i. e. constant application will produce the intended result. நடந்துநடந்து காலெல்லாம் காய்த்துப்போயிற்று... From continual walking the feet have grown callous. தோள்காய்ந்துப்போயிற்று. The shoulder is become callous by carrying, &c. காய்க்கும்பருவம், s. The period of yielding fruit. 2. Age of child-bearing. காய்த்தமரம், s. A tree that has borne fruit. 2. A tree loaded with fruit. காய்த்தமரங்கல்லெறியுண்ணும். Stones will be thrown at the tree which is loaded with fruit; i. e. parents and persons of wealth, influence and responsibility have many causes for vexation. காய்ப்பு, v. noun. Produce of a tree, &c., a crop of fruit or grain, காய்க்கை. 2. Callosity, callousness, thick skin, தடிப்பு. 3. A scar, தழும்பு. 92)

kurngku (p. 124) கிறது, குரங்கினது, குரங்கும், குரங்க, v. n. To bend, bow, incline, stoop, propend; to be prone--as beasts, குனிய. 2. To be curved, to curl and hang down, வளைந்துதாழ. 3. To bow, to make an obeisance, to render adoration, வணக்கஞ்செய்ய. 4. To relent, grieve, pity; feel sorry, இரங்க. (சது.) This word is sometimes pronounceed குறங்கு. குரங்குளை, s. The curled mane. The incarnation of benevolence. தயாவிருத்தி, s. Increase of grace, கிரு பைமிகுதல். 2. The fourteen acts of beneficence, தயாவிருத்தி, 14.--The first seven relate to the soul, the other seven to the body. Of the soul; 1. களாபடனம், education, communication of knowledge, கல் விபயிற்றுகை; 2. வியாதாகாரம், comfort to the afflicted, consolation of mind, துயர்தீர்க்கை; 3. நிர்க்கத்தண்டனம், relieving from punishment, தண்டம்நீக்குகை; 4. சந்தேகவாரணம், removing doubts, contingency, &c., ஐயந் தேற்றுகை; 5. அன்னியகுணசகனம், hearing of the superiority of others without envy, and enduring their infirmities with patience, பிறந்குணத்தழுக்காறின்றிப்பொறுத்தல்; 6. பரதிருதுனயோகம், forgetting the evils inflicted by others and seeking to do them good, பிறராற்செய்யப்படுந்தீமையைமறந்தூன்றிநி னைக்கை; 7. பார்த்ததேவப்பிராத்திதம், praying for the prosperity and good of others, பிறர்நிமித்தந்தேவனைவழிபடுதல். Those regarding the body or சத்தாங் கோபகராம் are: 1. அன்னம், food, giving boiled rice, உணவு; 2. பானம், drink, குடிக்க நீர்; 3. அம்பரம், raiment, வஸ்திரம்; 4. மந்திரம், a dwelling, இடம்; 5. தாசபாலனம். preservation from slavery, அடிமைகாத்தல்; 6. காராமயத்திரிதயமோசனம், removing the three afflictions of captivity, சிறைநோய் மூன்றுந்தீர்த்தல். viz.: restraint from the calls of nature, மலசலவாதை; corporal punishments, சரீரதண்டனை; chains, fetters, விலங்கு போடல். 7. சவச்சேமம், burial, பிரேதமடக்கல். There are eight other kinds of benevolence. 1. பிறர்க்குப்பொருள்வரவையுவத்தல், rejoicing in a neighbor's wealth; 2. பிறர்செல்வம்பொறுத்தல், being content in seeing a neighbor's welfare; 3. பிறர்கருமத் திற்குடன்படுதல், assisting in other's business, with interest; 4. தீமைக்கஞ்சல், fearing to do evil; 5. பிறர்கருமமுடிக்கவிரைதல், hastening to assist others; 6. பிறரையந் தீர்த்தல், removing other's doubts; 7. நன் மைகடைப்படித்தல், preserving in doing good; 8. பிறர்துயர்க்கிரங்கல், commiserating the distress of others; sympathizing with the afflicted. 19) *
