arai (p. 27) s. Half, பாதி, (marked &tamilhalf;, &tamilhalf, or இ.) 2. Waist, middle, loins, இடை. 3. That part of the trunk of a tree, or shrub, which reaches from the ground to where the branches begin, (occurs only in composition) thus: கோழரை, a smooth trunk, like the plantain; பொரியரை, a rough trunk, like the tamarind or mangoe; முள்ளரை, a thorny trunk. அரைக்கச்சு--அரைக்கச்சை, s. A girdle, a belt, zone worn round the waist. அரைக்கால், s. The eighth part of the whole, half a quarter, marked , .) அரைச்சதங்கை, s. A string of bells worn by children round the waist. அரைஞாண்--அரைநாண்--அரை நூல், s. A cord worn round the loins to which the cloth to cover the nakedness is attached, or sometimes worn over the inner cloth, and made of gold, silver, &c., called, பொன்னரைஞாண், வெள்ளியரை ஞாண், பட்டையரைஞாண். &c. அரைநலவன், s. [prov.] A bull not well castrated. அரைநாவை, s. A part of the plough which receives the share bent one side and unfit for use, the tip of a hoe bent one side. அரைநாள், s. The half of a day. அரைப்பட்டிகை, s. A golden or silver plate or girdle worn by dancing girls and some other women round the waist, sometimes also by men, இடையணியினொன்று. அரைப்பூட்டு. Girdle, இடைக் கட்டு. 2. A joint of the loins, இடுப்பின் பொருத்து. அரைமூடி, s. A small plate of metal worn by little girls over the private parts. அரையாப்பு--அரையாப்புக்கட்டி, s. A venereal swelling, tumor or bubo about the groin, மேகநோயாலிடையிலுண்டா கும்பரு. அரைவடம், s. A string of beads worn round the waist. (p.) அரைவட்டம், s. A semi-circle, 2. A small plate of metal worn by very small female children, as அரைமூடி. அரைவயிறன், s. [prov.] Rice husks half full, or with the grains half perished, for want of rain, &c., கருக்காய். அரைவாசி, s. Half. (c.) அரைவாய், s. Half a mouthful. 2. A flat mouth with thin lips. அரைவெறி, s. The state of being half drunk, partial intoxication. 4)

aḷai (p. 33) s. A hole, a hollow in the ground, in a tree, &c., (as a rat's hole or snake's hole,) a hole or cavity at the side of a tank or well, the resort of alligators, வளை. 2. (p.) A cave, a cavern in a mountain or rock, மலைக்குகை. 3. The hole of an anthill, புற்று. 4. A place, இடம். 5. A form of the seventh case, ஏழனுருபு. 6. Curds, curdled milk, தயிர். 7. Whey, buttermilk, மோர். அளைமறிபாப்புப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the sense begins at the end and goes backward to the beginning--One of the eight பொருள்கோள். அளையெடுக்க--அளைவைக்க, inf. To burrow, வளைசெய்ய. 2. To grow hollow as an ulcer, புரைவைக்க. 38)

āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

iṭai (p. 45) s. Middle, midst, centre, நடு. 2. The middle of a body, the waist, மருங்குல். 3. As இடைச்சொல்--a particle. 4. Interval of time, &c., நடுநேரம். 5. (p.) Place, room, space, position, situation, இடம். 6. A form of the seventh or locative case, ஏழனுருபு. 7. The side of a thing, place, quarter, region, பக்கம். 8. An elephant, யானை. 9. Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. Frustration, interruption, disappointment, obstruction, hinderance, mishap, casualty, contingence, misfortune, disaster, இடர். (c.) இடையெண், s. A poem increasing and decreasing like the waves of the sea, அம்போதரங்கத்தொன்று. இடையொடுகடைமடக்கு, s. A figure in Rhetoric, repetition of a word or phrase in the middle and end of a line with different meanings, மடக்கணியி லொன்று. இடைவழக்கு, s. [prov.] A suit at law instituted by a new claimant while the previous one is going forward, கிளை வழக்கு. இடைவழக்காளி, s. An intervening party in a law-suit. இடைவழி, s. Midway. இடைவள்ளல், s. A term common to the second of the three classes of kings famed for liberality. (p.) இடைவாய், s. The degrees marked upon a steel-yard. இடைவிட, inf. To intermit, suspend, interrupt, leave intermissions, interstices, &c. இடைவிட்டுவிட்டு. Every other one. இடைவிடாமழை, s. Incessant rain. இடைவிடாமல், neg. v. part. Incessantly, constantly, without intermission. இடைவெட்டுப்பணம், s. A clipped or imperfectly stamped coin, மாறுமத் திரைவிழுந்தபணம். 2. [prov.] Profit made indirectly, பொறுக்கியெடுத்தபணம். இடைவெட்டுப்பேச்சு, s. Derision, ridicule. இடைவெளி, s. An intervening space, நடுவெளி. எட்கிடை--எள்ளிடை, s. The thickness of a rape-seed. immeṉl (p. 47) . An imitative sound, இம்--as expressive of haste, அனுகர்ணவோசை. 2. A particle of quickness, விரைவுக்குறிப்பு. (p.) இம்மெனவந்துவிட்டான். He is come already. இம்மெனுமளவுநீங்காதென்செய்வானேங்கினானே. (The spectre) not being separated, from him, even for a moment, he was frightened, finding no means to be rid of it. (திருவிளை.) 24)

iracam (p. 48) s. Flavor, relish; what is tasteful, agreeable, palatable, delicious; taste in general, good or bad--also the six flavors. (See சுவை.) 2. Sweetness, இனிமை. 3. Sweet juice of fruits, &c., vegetable juice in general, சாறு. 4. Mercury, quicksilver, hydrargyrum, பாதரசம். 5. (p.) One of the juices of the body, சத்ததாதுவினொன்று. (See தாது.) It corresponds more with chyle than any other, but probably it is fanciful. 6. Pepper-water made of several ingredients, மிளகுநீர். 7. [in rhetoric.] The passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry, வீரமுதலியவெண்சுவை. Of these eight are given; viz.: 1. வீரம் or வீரியம், courage. 2. அச்சம், பயம், or பயானகம், fear, terror. 3. இழிப்பு, விபற்சம், குற்சை, அருவரு ப்பு, abominating, loathing at or disgusting. 4. வியப்பு or அற்புதம், wonder, surprise, astonishment. 5. காமம், சிங்காரம், சிருங்காரம், love, sexual love. 6. அவலம் or கருணை, acute sensibility, weakness, tenderness, mercy, pity, clemency. 7. உருத்திரம், கோ பம், இரௌத்திரம், பெருங்கோபம், warlike fury, wrath, displeasure, rage. 8. நகை, பெரு நகை or ஆசியம், laughter, mirth, risibility, great or intense laughter, laughing in contempt. By some, சாந்தம், tranquillity, equanimity, peace, abstraction or the stoicism of the ascetics; and by others வற்சலம், parental tenderness are given as a ninth meaning; இரசம் is added at pleasure with the loss in some cases of its initial-as வீராசம், இழிப்பிரசம், &c. Wils. p. 697. RASA. இரசகந்தாயம், s. Tribute, the fatness of the earth. இரசகந்தாயமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak pleasingly. இரசகருப்பூரம், s. Muriate of mercury, ஓர்மருந்து. இரசகுண்டு, s. [prop. இரசக்குண் டு.] A globular glass filled with mercury as a decoration at weddings, &c., also as a charm. இரசகுளிகை--இரசமாத்திரை, s. A quick-silver pill employed in medicine, இரசத்தினாற்செய்தமாத்திரை. 2. [in alchemy.] A pill feigned to be used by a class of persons called சித்தர், now in the world of Indra, who thereby perform supernatural actions--as கமனஞ்செய்கை, or passing through the air to any desired place, சித்தர்குளிகை. இரசக்கட்டு, s. Condensed mercury, சூதக்கட்டு. இரசக்கிணறு--இரசக்குழி, s. A pit or mine where quick-silver is obtained. இரசக்குடுக்கை, s. A little bottle of mercury. இரசசிந்தூரம், s. RASAB'HASMAN. இரசபாஷாணம், s. A kind of prepared arsenic. இரசப்பிரீதி--இரசமாதா, s. One of the hundred-and-twenty kinds of arsenic in its natural state. இரசமணி, s. Hard globules of mercury prepared by incantations, &c., and worn as an amulet in order to prevent evil, cure diseases, to promote success in undertakings, &c. இரசமுறிக்க, inf. To prepare mercury for medicine. 2. To carry mercury off from the body. இரசலிங்கம், s. Vermilion, சாதி லிங்கம். 2. A case of mercury for a linga. இரசவாதம்--இரசவித்தை, s. Alchemy--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். இரசவாதம்பண்ண, inf. To practise the art of alchemy. இரசவாதி, s. An alchemist. இரசவாழை--இரதவாழை, s. [improp. இதரைவாழை.] A species of plantain, பேயன்வாழை. இரசவைப்பு, s. Any preparation from mercury--as a muriate, sulphate, &c., an amalgam. இரசனை, s. Flavor, deliciousness, sweetness, delicacy, சுவை. 2. The tongue, நாக்கு. 3. Juice, sap, essence, சாறு. இரசாதிபதி--இரசாதிபன், s. [in astrology.] The sun or one of the planets presiding over fruits, vegetables, &c., for the given years, இரசவஸ்துகட்கதி காரியாங்கிரகம். இரசாபாசம், A loss of flavor, or of juice. இரசேந்திரம், s. [in rhetoric.] An indirect answer--as when one is asked if he has areca nut, he answers that he has betel, meaning that he has no areca. These modes of answering are of five kinds, விடைப்பொ ருளைத்தருவதாய்வருவது. See விடை. இறைபுரிய, inf. To hold the reins of government, அரசாட்சிசெய்ய. 2. um (p. 63) . A connective particle variously used, ஓரிடைச்சொல். 1. எதிர்மறையும்மை, the use of உம் with an affirmative, or negative expressing probability, possibility, &c., and implying the possibility, &c., of the contrary--as, சாத்தன்வருதற்குமுரியன், Sattan may perhaps come; அவன்வரவுங்கூடும், It is possible that he may come. 2. சிறப்பும்மை, the உம் of speciality, including உயர்வுசிறப் பும்மை, or superiority and இழிவுசிறப்பும்மை, or inferiority--as, ஞானிகளுமறியார்கள்சித்திரநதிமூல ம், Even the sages are unacquainted with the source of the சித்திரம் river; இவ்வூர்ப்பூனை யும்புலாறின்னாது, Even the cats of this place will not eat flesh (so sacred is it, so vile is the practice); பார்ப்பானுங்கள்ளுண்டான், Even a Brahman has been drinking toddy; இவனைநாயுந்தேடாது, Even a dog will not regard him. 3. ஐயவும்மை, the உம் in doubt, uncertainty, indecision, equivocal forms, probability, possibility--as, அவர்பத்தாயினுந் தருவார்பதினைந்தாயினுந்தருவார், Perhaps he may give ten or he may give fifteen; மழை பெய்தாலும்பெய்யும், It may perhaps rain; பத் தானுமெட்டானுங்கொடு, Give ten, or eight, ten would be preferred, but eight may do; வரினும்வருவான், It is probable that he may come. The உம் is often suppressed. 4. எச்சவும்மை, இறந்ததுதழீஇயவெச்சவும்மை, எதிரதுதழீ இயவெச்சவும்மை, the use of உம் implying another person, thing, or event, understood, and meaning likewise, too, even--as, அவனும் வந்தான், He also is come (implying that another is come or expected); நாம்பாடவும் வேண்டும், We must sing also (as well as dance, &c.); கேட்டும்படிக்கவேண்டும், By inquiry also we must learn (as well as by other means). 5. முற்றும்பை, indicating the whole of a number or series, universality, totality--as, ஒருவருக்குமையமில்லை, None can doubt; எங்குமில்லை, no where; இருகண்ணுஞ் சிவந்தன, both eyes reddened; எவ்விடமும், every where; இரண்டையுங்கொண்டுவா, Bring them both; எல்லாரும், எவரும், ஆரும்வந்தார், all, whoever, &c. came; மிகுந்தநாலுபணத்தை யுந்தா, Give me the remaining four fanams; மூவரும், all the three persons. 6. எண்ணும் மை, a numeral connective, corresponding with, and commonly repeated with each word of the series; நீயுமவனும்வந்தீர்கள், You and he came. The particle is sometimes joined to the last only--as, சாத்தன், கொற்றன், பூதனும் வந்தார்கள், Sattan, Kottan and Poodan came. Sometimes it is wholly omitted, and a pronoun including the series used instead--as, சாத்தன்கொற்றன்இவர்கள்வந்தார்கள். Sometimes the last noun in the series is used in the plural--as, சாத்தகோற்றவர்வந்தார்கள். 7. தெரிநிலையும்மை, the உம் of ascertainment, clear perception, or decision, used of three or more things concerning which doubt has been entertained, but which is now cleared up--as, ஆணுமன்றுபெண்ணுமன்று, It is neither male nor female (but in hermaphrodite); அவருண்பதுசோறுமல்ல, பணிகாரமுமல் ல, சாகமூலபலாதிகள், His food is neither rice nor cakes, but leaves, roots and fruits, &c. 8. ஆக்கவும்மை, உம் expressive of a change of state--as, பாலுமாயிற்று, This milk became medicine also; வலியனுமாயினான், He has become even a strong man. The above eight are given in நன்னூல். 9. உம் joined to an infinitive implies விரைவு, the immediate occurrence of the event--as, துரைகட்டளையிடவுங்காரியஞ்செய்துமுடிந்தது, As soon as the magistrate gave the order, the thing was done; அவர்சொல்லவுமுலகங்களுண் டாம், As soon as he speaks worlds appear. The உம் is often omitted, but then it is less expressive--as, நானிதைச்செய்யெனச்செய்கிறான், I say this and he does it. 1. உம் added to a verbal noun in poetry, sometimes gives it a gerund-like succession of the event--as, காண்டலுமிதுவேசொல்வான், Seeing him he spoke thus; வருதலுந்தழுவிக் கொண்டான், As soon as he came he embraced. 11. உம் is associated to the social ablative with the same meaning--as, கடுங்கணைதொடுத்தலோடும், As soon as the swift arrows were shot. 12. உம் added to the infinitive serves for optative, especially in epistolary usage but not in good style--as, தாங்கள்மறுமொழியனுப்பவும், May you please to send an answer; இப்படிச்செய்யவும், May you do so, I wish you to do so. 13. உம் added to the following forms of a verb, செய்து, செய்யின், செய்தால், has the force of though, although--as, அவனறிந்தும்வரவில்லை. Though he knew, he did not come; சொல்லி னும் or சொன்னாலும்அவன்கேளான், Though you may tell him he will not listen. 14. உம் added to இல் or இன் forms of the fifth case gives the force of the comparative degree --as, கந்தனினும்வலியனே, He is even stronger than Skanda. 15. A token of reproof, menace, anger, &c., also of attention, assent, doubt, non-compliance, &c., (see ஊம்)--as, உம்மெனத்தெழித்துரப்ப, He reproved his rashness by uttering the menacing sound உம் (ஸ்காந்தம்); கதைசொல்லுகி றேன்உம்கொட்டிக்கேள், I am going to tell you a story, show that you listen by saying உம்; உம்மெனுமார்பைத்தட்டும், The guilt of Brahmanicide manifested in a phantom threatened by saying உம் and striking on its breast (திருவிளையாடல்). 16. A termination of the imperative plural, முன்னிலைப்பன்மைவி குதி-- as, நீவிர்சொல்லும், say ye. It is often used honorifically in imperative singular --as, கடவுளேநீரிரங்கும், God be merciful. 17. A termination of verbs third pers. pres. or fut. tense sing. number, also of neut. plurals--as அவன்செய்யும், He does or will do it; சிங்கங்கள்முழங்கும், The lions roar, or will roar, செய்யுமென்முற்றுவிகுதி. 18. A modification of the pronoun நீர் when it is declined in the different cases--as, உம்மை, உம் மால், &c. 19. The termination of the future relative participle, எதிர்காலப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as, உலகாளும்அரசர், Kings who govern the world. 2)

urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. Rules for making commentaries. There are five according to சதுரகராதி, viz.: 1. பதம். 2. பதப்பொருள். 3. வாக்கியம். 4. வினா. 5. விடை. உரையிற்கோடல், v. noun. Additions to a text by a commentator--one of the உத்தி. உரையெழுத, inf. To write a commentary. உரைவன்மை, s. Eloquence, oratorical power, சாதுரியப்பேச்சு. 2.
