uṟṇṭu (p. 67) கிறேன், உறண்டினேன், வேன், உறண்ட, v. n. To become reduced, or emaciated by journeying, want of suitable food, or by disease, &c., வறள. சாப்பாடில்லாமலவருறண்டிப்போனார். He is greatly reduced by want of food. 70)

A window, பலகணி; [ex கால், wind, et அதர், way.] காலாட, inf. To be active and industrious, முயல. காலாடி, s. An active, industries man, one who is active in movements, affairs, &c., முயற்சியுடையோன். 2. Wanderer, திரி வோன். 3. Title given to the chief of the Paller caste, பள்ளர்தலைவன். காலாட்டம், s. Activity in business, in duty, and consequent properity, மு யற்சி. காலாட்டமுள்ளமாடு, s. An ox that is brisk and ploughs well. காலாணி, s. A corn on the foot. 2. Pegs in the beams of native houses to support the roof. காலாணியற்றுப்போனவன், s. One who is become weak or poor. காலாயுதம், s. The charioteer of the sun, அருணன்; [ex கால், leg, இல், not without legs.] காலில்விழ, inf. To fall prostrate, or do homage at one's feet. காலுழற்சிகையுழற்சி. Distortion of the limbs, by convulsion or otherwise. காலிறால், s. See under இறால். காலுளைவு, v. noun. Soreness, aching or pain in the legs, from cold, walking, &c. காலூன்ற, inf. To set on foot firm on the ground; to become established. காலூன்றிநிற்க, inf. To stand firmly, stand fast. காலூன்றிப்பெய்ய, inf. To rain in torrents--the clouds seeming to rest on the horizon. காலேயரைக்கால், s. A quarter and oneeighth, five-eighths. காலோடேகால்சேர்ந்துநிற்க, inf. To stand with closed legs. கால்கட்டு, s. Inseparableness--as of wife and husband. கால்கட்டுகைகட்டு, Bound hand and foot. 2. (fig.) Confined at home by the sickness of another, by a grown-up daughter, a motherless child, or by urgent business, &c. கால்கழுவ, inf. To wash the feet; metaphorically to clean one's self with water after stool, மலங்கழுவ. கால்கூசுதல், v. noun. Shrinking of the foot in touching rough ground, &c. 2. Recoiling of the legs in stepping into the compound or house of a stranger. 3. Having spasms in the arms, and legs --as in cholera. கால்சீக்க, inf. To root out, exterminate, வேரோடுகளைய. 2. To efface, to obliterate, துடைக்க. 3. To dispel darkness, இருளைஅகற்ற. 4. To scrape with the foot, காலினாற்சீக்க. கால்செய்வட்டம், s. A fan, விசிறி; [ex கால், air, et செய்வட்டம்.] கால்தளர--காறளர inf. To become weak in the limps, by walking, sickness, age, &c. கால்தோல்--காற்றோல் s. [prov.] Leathern defences for toddy-drawers feet in climbing, மரமேறுவோர் காலிலிடுந்தோல். கால்நகம்--கானகம் s. Toe-nail. கால்நடை--கானடை. v. noun. Walking, going on foot--as distinct from riding and driving. 2. s. Sheep and goats; oxen, cattle, ஆடுமாடுகள் அவனுக்குமாட்டில் நூறுகால்நடையுண்டு. He has no-hundred oxen. கால்நடையாய், adv. On foot, a-foot. கால்நடையாய்ப் பிரயாணம்போக, inf. To travel on foot. கால்நோக்கு--கானோக்கு s. One-fourth aspect of a planet, being one of the four aspects. கால்பாவவில்லை. The feet do not seek the ground--recoiling from going. கால்பிடிக்க, inf. To fall at one's feet to ask a favor. 2. To press and rub the legs in order to induce sleep, to shampoo. கால்பின்னிக்கொண்டுநிற்க, inf. To stand cross-legged. கால்பின்னிக்கொள்ள--காலோடேகால் பின்னிக்கொள்ள, inf. To lose the power of walking, legs being crossed. கால்மட்டம், s. [prov.] Use of the feet in walking, by guess or practice--as in the dark or as a blind man. கால்மாடு, s. The foot of a bed, or of a person in bed, காற்பக்கம். கால்மிதி, s. Step in dancing. 2. Footmark, காற்சுவடு. கால்வருட, inf. To shampoo, to stroke the feet, soles, &c. கால்வழி, s. A halting or hobbling leg. கிந்துகாலன், s. A hobbler. கீற்றரைக்கால், The contracted form of உ, marked thus ,-- as து, நு. கீற்றுக்கால், The contracted form of ஊ, marked thus --as தூ, நூ. See under கீற்று. குதிகால்--குதிங்கால் s. Heel. குந்துகாலன், (fem. குந்துகாலி.) A hobbler, a limping person. 2. A Squatter, a man sitting on the his knees. குந்துகால், s. Tip-toe. 2. Tenders or proposals in writing. கேள்விக்காரர், s. [prov.] Bidders at an auction. 2. Persons who tender proposals at a purchase. 3. Candidates or applicants for an office. கேள்விச்செவி, s. Listening credulously to hear-say reports. கேள்விச்செவியன் ஊரைக்கெடுத்தான். The credulous ruler ruined the country. கேள்விப்பத்திரம், s. [prov.] A request, application, petition, &c., in writing. கேள்விகேட்பாடு, s. [local.] Judicial inquiry, investigation. கேள்வியற்றஊர்--கேள்வியில்லாதஊர், s. A town without justice. கேள்விமுறை, s. Inquiry into; superintendence, control, management. கேள்வியாக, inf. To be heard, to be reported; to reach the ears--as news; to be heard in court. கை கைகாட்டு, v. noun. Gesture with the hand, as in dancing; beck of the hand. கைகுவிக்க, inf. To hold up the hands joined, in worship, &c. See குவி. கைகுறண்ட, inf. To have the hands bent by spasms. 2. To be cramped in the hands. 3. To be stingy, parsimonious, close-fisted. கைகூச, inf. To be backward in using the hand. See கூசு. கைகூட, inf. To come to hand, be obtained, to succeed, அனுகூலப்பட. அவன்செய்வதெல்லாம் அவனுக்குக் கைகூடும். All that he does prospers. கைகூப்பு, v. noun. Raising the joined hands in worship--as கூப்பு. 2. The distance from the tip of the fingers to the feet, when the hands are joined and raised above the head. கைகொட்ட, inf. To clap the hands. கைகோக்க, inf. To clasp one another's hands, to join hands. 2. To be arm in arm, to take another's arm. கைகோத்தாட, inf. To dance with arms linked. கைகோள், s. A course of conduct, especially in love affairs. (அகப்பொ.) கேள்வி, v. noun. The grand subjects of information under four heads; 1. அ றம், virtue or a virtuous course of action; all knowledge relating to the nature or practice of virtue, or having virtue as its object, including religion, jurisprudence, ethies and every thing connected with the well-being of society, and the promotion of universal benevolence towards all sentient beings. This is subdivided into, 1. இல்லறம், the duties and usages of man--as a member of society. 2. துறவறம், the duties and practices of the recluse, who renounces social life and retires to the desert. 2. பொருள், wealth, property, substance; truth; all kinds of knowledge relating to the nature, acquisition and uses of learning and wealth--including. 1. கல்விப்பொருள், general knowledge, and science. 2. செல் வப்பொருள், property, trade, commerce and the various occupations for gain or the support of life. 3. இன்பம், delight, gratification, knowledge of the nature and means of pleasure and bliss--especially love and matrimony. 4. வீடு, liberation from births, knowledge relating to final emancipation or eternal felicity. --Note. Another classification makes five parts, the fifth embracing the practice of the rules laid down for the attainment of the benefits implied in the four. 72)

Wielding the shield as a fencer, சிலம்பம். The metrical feet are thirty, divided into five classes, viz.: 1. உரிச்சீர், or ஆசிரியவுரிச்சீர், feet peculiar to the அகவல் verse--as (a.) தேமா, foot of two simple syllables, a spondee. (b.) புளிமா, one compound and one simple syllable; an iambus. (c.) கருவி ளம். Two compound syllables, a pyrrhic. (d.) கூவிளம். One simple and one compound syllable, a trochee. The names serve also as models for the kinds of feet respectively. They are names of trees and their fruits. 2. வெண்சீர், or வெண்பாஉரி ச்சீர். Feet peculiar to வெண்பா verse; as (a.) தே-மாங்-காய். A foot of three simple syllables. (b.) புளி-மாங்-காய். One compound and two simples. (c.) கரு-விளங்--காய். Two compounds and one simple; an anap&ae;st. (d.) கூ-விளங்-காய். A simple, a compound and a simple. 3. வஞ்சியுரிச்சீர், or வஞ்சிச்சீர். Feet peculiar to வஞ்சி verse; as (a.) தே-மா ங்-கனி. A foot of two simple syllables and one compound. (b.) புளி-மாங்-கனி. One compound, one simple, and one compound; an amphibrach. (c.) கரு-விளங்கனி. Three compounds, a tribrach. (d.) கூவிளங்-கனி. One simple and two compound syllables. 4. பொதுச்சீர். Feet of four syllables peculiar to வஞ்சி verse; there are sixteen of them; the models for these are formed by adding respectively, தண்-ணி ழல், தண்-பூ, நறும்-பூ, நறு-நிழல் to the terms employed in the உரிச்சீர். 5. ஓரசைச்சீர். A foot of a single syllable; as (a.) நாள். A foot of one simple syllable. (b.) மலர். A foot of a compound syllable.--Note. 1. One use of the last two is to end the வெண்பா verse. --Note. 2. Sometimes feet answering to காசு, instead of நாள், and பிறப்பு instead of மலர், are employed to end the வெண்பா verse, i. e., the addition of குற்றுகரம் or short உ to the foregoing; and rarely the full உ, or முற்றுகரம் is found. சீராயிருக்கிறேன். I am in a good state. சீரழிக்க, inf. To disturb, subvert, pervert. 2. To ruin, demolish. 3. To disparage one's character. (c.) சீராக, inf. (adverbially.) Orderly, decently, properly, soberly, consistently, circumspectly, moderately, temperately, discreetly. சீராகநடக்க, inf. To act consistently, &c. சீராடிக்கொண்டுபோதல், v. noun. [prov.] The going of a married girl to her father's house for redress of grievances from her husband's family, especially from her mother-in-law. (c.) சீரானநடை, s. A moderate pace. 2. Good moral character without excess. சீரிழுக்க, inf. To pervert good circumstances. (R.) சீரிட--சீர்செய்ய--சீர்கொடுக்க, inf. To give house-hold utensils, &c., to a daughter when married. 2. To put in order, சீர்செய்ய. சீருக்குவர--சீரிலேவர, inf. To be altered for the better, to come to a right or natural state. சீரைத்தேட, inf. To desire wealth. (Avv.). சீரைவிசாரிக்க, inf. To inquire after one's health. (R.) சீர்குலைய, inf. To be disordered, deranged. 2. To be lost--as character, ruined--as circumstances; to be disgraced. 3. (fig.) To be defloured, கற்பழிய. சீர்குலைச்சல், v. noun. Disorder, immodesty. (R.) சீர்கெட, inf. To degenerate, deteriorate, to become tarnished, corrupt, spoiled. சீர்கெட்டவன்--சீர்கேடன், s. A worthless person, a wretch. 2. A sloven. சீர்கெட்டவாழ்வு, s. Unhappy, domestic life. சீர்கேடு, s. Disorder, derangement, irregularity. 2. clumsiness, awkwardness. 3. Ugliness, deformity. சீர்கேடி, s. The goddess of misfortune or poverty, மூதேவி. (நிக.) (p.) சீர்சிறப்பு, s. Splendid prosperity. சீர்செய்ய, inf. To put in order, regulate, improve. 2. To adorn. 3. As சீரிட, which see. சீர்திருத்த, inf. To correct, rectify, amend, ameliorate, to perform. சீர்திருந்த--சீர்பொருந்த, inf. To be corrected, rectified, reformed, &c. சீர்தூக்க, inf. To weigh or examine with a balance. 2. To weigh in the mind, to consider, deliberate. 3. To compare--commonly with பார்த்தல், for the second and third persons. சீர்தூக்கிப்பார். Ponder this well. சீர்நிருவாகம், s. Condition, state, circumstances; [ex நிருவாகம், strength.] சீர்பண்ண, inf. To make ready, to put in order, correct, improve. சீர்பதி, s. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். See சீபதி. சீர்பாதம், s. The divine feet, the illustrious feet--spoken reverently for the person. See சீபாதம். சீர்பெற, inf. To attain prosperity. சீர்போட, inf. [prov.] To tie the balance string to a paper kite. (c.) சீர்ப்பட--சீர்பட, inf. To be restored, to amend, recover, come to a good state --as செம்மைப்பட. சீர்ப்படுத்த, inf. To reform, improve, bring to a good state--as செம்மைப்படுத்த. சீர்ப்படுத்திவைக்க, inf. To arrange things in order. சீர்ப்பாடு, s. Celebrity, distinction, eminence, splender, beauty. (p.) சீர்ப்பிழை, s. An impediment, an obstacle, an untoward circumstance. 2. Fault, defect, குற்றம். சீர்மடக்கு, v. noun. Repetition of a foot in a line. (p.) சீர்மரம், s. A weaver's beam, படமரம். சீர்வரிசை, s. Presents made to a married girl, or one arrived at puberty (c.) ஒருகண்டசீராய், adv. Equally, uniformly, uninterruptedly. ஒருசீரானவன், appel. n. One who maintains consistency of character, moderation of temper, &c. பலசீரும்நடக்கும். You will be hospitably entertained. Or the matter will take verious shapes. துர்ச்சீர், s. A bad state or condition. நற்சீர், s. A good state or condition. 7)

curṇṭu (p. 195) கிறேன், சுரண்டினேன், வேன், சுரண்ட, v. a. (improp. சுறண்டு.) To scratch off, abrade, scrape off with a finger-nail, or an instrument; to erase, நகமுதலியவற்றினாற் சுரண்ட. 2. (fig.) To drain one's property away; to crave, solicit meanly, கவர. 3. To scratch or draw the tip of the finger lightly over one as a token or notice, சீ ண்ட. 4. To instigate, excite, தூண்ட. 5. To pick a quarrel, சண்டையுண்டாக்க. 6. (in burlesque.) To commit adultery, விபசாரஞ் செய்ய. (c.) சுரண்டித்தேய்க்க, inf. TO give a good rubbing to furniture, to scratch off the rough parts on a surface, to polish. சுரண்டியெழுத, inf. To write again, scraping off letters wrongly made. சுரண்டி, s. [prov.] A scraper. (Colloq.) சுரண்டிக்கொண்டுபோக, inf. To take away property by stratagem, importunity, &c. சுரண்டிவிட, inf. To excite. சுரண்டிச்சுரண்டிவர, inf. To pick quarrels. சுரண்டல்--சுரண்டுதல், v. noun. cuṟṇṭu (p. 198) கிறேன், சுறண்டினேன், வேன், சுறண்ட, v. a (improp. for சுரண்டு.) To scratch, abrade, scrape off with a fingernail, or an instrument, நகமுதலியவற்றாற்சு றண்ட. See சுரண்டு for the compounds. 96)

coṟi (p. 212) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To itch, tingle, as severe itching, நமை யுண்டாக. 2. v. a. To scratch in order to allay itching, சுறண்ட. 3. (fig.) To crave, solicit meanly, கெஞ்சிக்கேட்க. (c.) சொறிகட்டை, s. [prov.] A rubbing stone or post, for cattle. சொறிகட்டையானவன், appel. n. A mean, spiritless person; (lit.) a rubbing post. சொறிகரப்பன், s. Scurf that causes intense itching. சொறிசிரங்கு, s. Small itch. See சிர ங்கு. சொறிந்துகொடுக்க, inf. To urge, incite, pat. சொறிந்துகொண்டிராமல்சுறுக்காகச்செய். Do not scratch over it, but do it quickly. சொறிந்துதேயாதஎண்ணெயும் பரிந்திடாதசோறும் பாழ். Oil not well rubbed in, and rice given without kindness, are lost. சொறிவு, v. noun. pṟṇṭu (p. 303) கிறேன், பறண்டினேன், வேன், பறண்ட v. a. [com. for பறண்டு.] To scratch with nails, talons, claws, &c., to tear up by scratching. See சுறண்டு. 35)
