akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், ex இலக் கணம். அக்கராரம்பம்--அட்சராரம்பம், s. Beginning to teach a child the letters of the alphabet, with appropriate ceremonies, on the fifth year. 46) *

aṉṉuvylilkkṇm (p. 34) s. The specialities of grammatical construction, embracing five particulars; viz.: 1. விசேடணம், qualifying terms. 2. விசேடியம், the thing qualified. 3. கருத்தா, the agent. 4. கருமம், the object. 5. கிரியை, the action or attribute-as அருளுடையஞானிகதியடைந் தான். The pious devotee obtained bliss; wherein the first term அருளுடைய is வி சேடனம், ஞானி is விசேடியம் and கருத்தா, கதி is கருமம், and அடைந்தான், the verb or கிரியை. 17)

alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. Orthographical errors in speaking, writing, &c., spoken chiefly of false interpretation, &c., of the Puranas or other writings deemed sacred, எழுத்திலக்கணவழு. எழுத்துக்கூட்ட, inf. To spell, join letters. எழுத்துக்கூட்டாமல்வாசிக்க, inf. To read fluently. எழுத்துச்சந்தி, s. Union of letters in the combination of words, எழுத்துப்பு ணர்ச்சி. எழுத்துச்சாரியை--எழுத்தின்சாரி யை, s. Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. A woman's fancy dress whether printed or embroidered, சித்திரவஸ்திரம். எழுத்துத்திரிதல், v. noun. Permutation of letters--the change of one letter for another according to grammatical rules, for the purposes of euphony, மூவிகாரத்தொன்று. எழுத்துநடை, s. Easy and fluent reading. எழுத்துப்படிய, s. inf. To become trained--as the hand to writing; to have a settled hand. எழுத்துப்பதிக்க, inf. To indent in writing, பதியவெழுத. 2. To enter, write, imprint, settle an affair by writing. எழுத்துப்பதிய, inf. To be indented--as writing, engraving. 2. To be entered, written. எழுத்துப்பிழை--எழுத்துப்பிசகு, s. Error in spelling. எழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. The five classes into which the letters are superstitiously divided. (See தசப்பொருத்தம்.) 2. Choosing a name for a child so as to begin with one of the letters ascribed in astrology to the lunar mansion, under whose influence the child is supposed to have been born, பிறந்தநட்சத்திரத்திற்குப் பொருந்தப்பெயரிடுகை. எழுத்துமடக்கு, s. Repetition of, the same letter in a verse, ஓரணி--as நா நாநாதம்கூடிசைநாடுந்தொழிலேவாய். எழுத்துவருத்தனம், s. A kind of diversion by means of poetry, a play on letters, the meaning changing as letters are added. See மிறைக்கவி. எழுத்துவாசனை, s. The art of reading and writing, எழுத்துநடை. எழுத்துவேலை, s. Chintz-painting, சீலையின்மீதெழுதுகை. 2. Writing, transcribing, copying, எழுதுந்தொழில். எழுத்தொலி--எழுத்தோசை, s. The sound of a letter. நுணுக்கெழுத்து, s. A character or letter written unintelligibly. கிறுக்கெழுத்து, s. A letter erased, cancelled; a letter badly written. கூட்டெழுத்து, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். The valued favors the deserving gain, Like sculptures in eternal rock remain; Of virtue's tribute charity is sure: But kind attentions to the worthless shown, Who debts and duties evermore disown, Like letters written in the wave endure. முதுவெழுத்து--தேறியவெழுத்து, s. Matured well-formed writing. நிலவெழுத்து, s. Letters written on sand. இளவெழுத்து, s. An immature hand not yet formed. சுட்டெழுத்து, s. A demonstrative letter. நெட்டெழுத்து, s. A long sounding letter. சார்பெழுத்து, s. A branch of அகப் பொருள், which treats of female chastity, கற்பொழுக்கங்கூறுமியல். கற்பிலக்கணம், s. The rules of chastity and housewifery. கற்புடைமை, s. Female chastity and virtue. கற்புநெறி, s. Female chastity (a pleonastic form). கற்புவலிமை, s. The power of female chastity and virtue. 2. The miraculous efficacy of female chastity, which, when possessed in a high degree, is considered capable of counteracting the order of nature. 26)

Tissues, சவ்வு. கலாநிதி, s. The moon, சந்திரன். கலைகுறைய, inf. To decrease as divinity in an idol by the neglect of pujah, &c. 2. (fig.) The arts and sciences, being sixty four, viz.: 1. அக்கரவிலக்கணம், the knowledge of spelling and reading, orthography, the science of reading. 2. இலி கிதம், caligraphy, penmanship. 3. கணி தம், the art of computation, arithmetic, the science of numbers. 4. வேதம், the Hindu Veda or law. 5. புராணம், a class of sacred books comprising the whole body of Hindu theology. 6. வியாகரணம், grammar. 7. நீதிசாத்திரம், jurisprudence. 8. சோதிடசாத்திரம், astronomy, including astroloy. 9. தருமசாத்திரம், ethics, moral philosophy, code of laws. 1. யோகசாத் திரம், the knowledge of abstract or silent devotion, rules for religious and abstract meditations. 11. மந்திரசாத்திரம், A division of the Vedas in the first practical part; it includes prayers and hymns addressed to particular deities and used at particular sacrifices, and it also comprehends incantations in religion. magic, medicine, and every other art or practice in which enchantments are used. 12. சகுணசாத்திரம், the science of prognosticating by omens and augury. 13. சிற்ப சாத்திரம், architecture and mechanics, symmetry, shapes in general including sculpture, painting features, lines, hair, &c., of the human system, and their various effects on life. 14.வைத்தியசாத்திரம், science of healing, physic, pharmacy and surgery which may include restoration to life of the dead, the reunion of severed limbs. &c. 15. உருவசாத்திரம், physiognomy, the art of discovering the temper and foreknowing the fortune by the features of the face, metoposcopy, chiromancy, the art of foretelling the events of life by inspecting the hand, சாமுத்திரிகம். 16. இதிகாசம், history, traditional accounts of former events, heroic history--as found in the Bharata and Ramayana. 17. காவியம், epic poetry --as சிந்தாமணி, நைடதம், &c. 18. அலங்காரம், science of rhetoric. 19. மதுரபாடணம், eloquence. 2. நாடகம், dramatic science. 21. நிருத்தம், the art of dancing. 22. சத்தப் பிரமம், directions for the modulation of sounds. 23. வீணை, the art of playing on the lute or stringed instruments. 24. வேணு. the art of playing on the flute or pipe. 25. மிருதங்கம், the art of beating the tambourine. 26. தாளம், the art of beating the cymbals. 27. அத்திரபரிட்சை, archery, the art of throwing darts. 28. கனகபரிட்சை, the art of an assayer in gold, &c. 29. இரதபரிட்சை, the art of driving chariots, charioteering. 3. கசபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the marks of an elephant. 31. அசுவபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the marks of a horse. 32. இரத் தினபரிட்சை, the art of examining and choosing gems, knowledge of precious stones. 33. பூமிபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the different kinds of soil, rules for determining by the surface, the nature and depth of soils, underneath which water is to be found, &c. 34. சங்கிராமவி லக்கணம், military art, tactics. 35. மல்ல யுத்தம், wrestling, pugilism, gymnastics, athletic art, boxing. 36. ஆகருடணம், the art of calling or summoning by enchantment. 37. உச்சாடணம், exorcism, dislodging devils or exciting them to injure others. 38. வித்துவேடணம், exciting hatred between parties by magical spells-one of the eight performances of enchantment. 39. மதனசாத்திரம், erotics, modus coeundi. 4. மோகனம், libidinous fascinations occasioned by enchantment. 41. வசீகரணம், the art of subduction by magic, the art of bringing one over to another's side or interest by enchant ment. 42. இரசவாதம், alchymy and chemistry. 43. காந்தருவவாதம் the knowledge of the condition of the celestial choristers. 44. பைபீலவாதம், the language of brute creatures from emmets upwards. 45. கவுத்துகவாதம், the art of restoring pleasure to a sorrowful mind. 46. தாதுவாதம், the knowledge of the pulse. 47. காரூடம். charms, incantations against poison. 48. நட்டம், information respecting any thing lost obtained by astronomical calculations. 49. முட்டி, information respecting any thing concealed in the palms of the hand (lit. in the fist.) 5. ஆகாயப்பிரவேசம், the art of entering into the air and becoming invisible. 51. ஆகாயமனம், the art of walking in the air. 52. பரகாயப்பிரவேசம், the power of leaving one's own body and entering another lifeless body or substance at pleasure. 53. அதிரிசயம், the power of making one's self invisible. 54. இந்திரசாலம், the art of conjuring, juggling, &c. 55. மகேந்திர சாலம், the art of performing wonders in heaven and earth. 56. அக்கினித்தம்பம், restraining the action of fire. 57. சலத் தம்பம், The art of counteracting the yielding quality of water so as to be able to walk on its surface. 58. வாயுத்தம்பம், the art of restraining the power of the wind. 59. திட்டித்தம்பம், the art of fascinating the eyes. 6. வாக்குத்தம்பம், the art of fascinating the mouth. 61. சுக்கிலத் தம்பம், the art of restraining the semen virile. 62. கனனத்தம்பம், the art of preventing the discovery of things concealed. 63. கட்கத்தம்பம், the art by which the power of sword or any other weapon is nullified. 64. அவத்தைப்பிர யோகம், the power of stationing the soul at pleasure, in any of the five stages in full energy by virtue of abstract devotion for converse with the deity. kiriyai (p. 110) s. Act, action, deed, operation, performance, emphatically good manners, orderliness, cleanliness, செய்கை 2. Religious rites or duties as prescribed by the Shastras, சமயநிஷ்டை. 3. Those parts of the Vedas which inculcate works, rites, and ceremonies, கருமகாண்டம்--opposed to ஞா னகாண்டம். கிரியாங்கம், s. Worship, rites and ceremonies, chiefly applicable to prescribed individual practice--as preparing the sacred ashes, repeating the incantations, touching the joints of the fingers while repeating them, &c., கிரியையுறுப்பு. கிரியாங்கம்பண்ண, inf. To perform the several external actions in the daily worship. கிரியாசத்தி, s. lit. The operative energy or power. [in the agama philosophy.] One of the three active or female energies of Siva, by which he effects the creation or evolution of the universe. 2. the faculty or power of action, operation, &c., as applied to any agent. (சிவ. சி.) கிரியாசாதனம், s. Being trained or inured to the performance of works, religious duties, &c., கிரியையனுட்டிப்பு. கிரியாசைவம், s. One of the sixteen divisions of the Siva system. Any thing disorderly, slovenly, ஒழுங்கற்றது. கிரியைகெட்டவன், s. One destitute of good manners, slovenly in dress, or irregular in habits. கிரியைக்காரன், s. One in the second degree of the Siva religion. கிரியைக்கேடு, s. slovenliness, debauchery, beastliness, ஒழுங்கின்மை. கிரியைசெய்ய, inf. To perform actions, duties, rites, &c., சடங்குசெய்ய. 2. Cock of a gun, துப்பாக்கியினோருறுப்பு. 5. The prop of an embankment, நீரையடைக்குமரம். 6. A wooden frame, for casks, &c., குதிரைமரம். 7. The sparrow, ஊர்க்குருவி. 8. The mango tree, மாமரம், குதிரை is employed to denote a mango tree, because its synonym, கொக்கு is a synonym of மாமரம். This is sometimes allowed in poetry. மண்குதிரையைநம்பியாற்றில்இறங்கலாமா? Can one mount a clay-horse and descend into a river? குதிரைக்கடிவாளம்--குதிரைவாய்க்கருவி, s. A bit; a bridle for a horse. குதிரைக்கல்லணை--குதிரைச்சேணம், s.
