Like a Brahmanee who has lost her salted mutton [prov.], used when something is lost which cannot to inquired after. உப்புக்கரித்தல்--உப்புக்கூர்த்தல், v. noun. Having a saline taste. உப்புக்கீரை, s. kṭumai (p. 88) s. Severity, harshness, cruelty, hard-heartedness, அகோரம். 2. Rigor, strictness, asperity, rigidness, earnestness, zealousness, கண்டிப்பு. 3. Vehemence, impetuosity, forcibleness, furiousness, மூர்க்கம். 4. Rapidity, speed, haste, velocity, விரைவு. 5. Hardness, tenacity, firmness, roughness, ruggedness, கடினம். 6. Excessiveness, intensity, immoderateness, vastness, exorbitancy, flagrancy, atrocity, malignity, heinousness, desperateness, மி குதி. 7. Ferocity, savageness, furiousness, violence, கோபம். 8. Strength, powerfulness, வன்மை. 9. Cutting in language, offensiveness, satiricalness, injuriousness, குரூரம். The leading character of this word in its different meanings is intensity. (See கொடுமை.) From this word id derived the symbolic verb கடிது. (3d person sing.) It is severe, &c., with any of the meanings of கடுமை. கடிசு, v. noun. Being too perpendicular, too little bent-- as a hoe, adze, &c., to the handle, or a plough-share to the shaft, நிமிர்வு--opp. to தணிசு. கடிச்சை, s. Niggardliness, உலோ பகுணம். கடிச்சைக்காரன், s. A niggard, a penurious man. கடியது, the neuter appellative.) That which is severe. கடியமோசம், s. Imminent danger. கடியவார்த்தை, s. Hard or angry words, offensive terms or language. கடியன், s. A severe, cruel man. கடுங்கணாளர், s. Cruel, savage, barbarous persons, கொடியோர். கடுங்கண், s. Cruelty, severity, barbarousness, unmercifulness, கொடுமை. 2. [prov.] The scallop of a palmyra leaf in a கோலுபட்டை, cut too closely, ஒலைக்கண். கடுங்கருத்து, s. Abstruse idea, farfetched unnatural meaning, கடமையானக ருத்து. கடுங்காய், s. [prov.] Unripe fruit, பழாதகாய். கடுங்காய்நுங்கு, s. Palmyra fruit, the kernel or pulp of which is too far advanced to be eatable, முதிர்ந்தநுங்கு. கடுங்காய்ச்சல், s. Violent fever, மிகுசுரம். 2. v. noun. Being over-heated-as by the smith, அதிககாய்ச்சல். 3. Being dried or scorched much in the sun, வெ யிலிலதிகமாய்க்காய்தல். கடுங்காய்ச்சலாக்காய்ந்துபோயிற்று. A strong breeze, a furious wind, a tempest, அதிககாற்று. கடுங்கூர்மை, s. Being sharp, அ திககூர்மை. 2. Salt from sesamum, கடுந்தி லாலவணம். 3. Salt of sulphur, கந்தகவுப்பு. 4. Sea salt, கடலுப்பு. கடுங்கூர்மைலவணம், s. Salt from urine, அமரியுப்பு. கடுங்கோடை, s. A severe drought, முதிர்வேனில். கடுங்கோபம், s. Violent anger. கடுஞ்சினப்பூமி--கடுந்தழற்பூமி, s. Alkaline earth, lixivium, உழமண். கடுஞ்சினேகம், s. Very close friendship, too great intimacy, அதிகசினேகம். கடுஞ்சினேகங்கண்ணுக்குப்பகை. Too great intimacy is productive of evil. கடுஞ்சுண்ணத்தி, s. Hard soil, வன்னிலம். கடுந்தோயல்--கடுந்தோய்ச்சல், v. noun. Over-tempering a weapon, &c., முதிர்ந்ததோயல். கடுமத்தியானம்--கடும்பகல், s. The intense heat of mid-day. கடுமுள், s. kāyccu (p. 104) கிறேன், காய்ச்சினேன், வேன், காய்ச்ச, v. a. [caus. of காய்.] To boil, prepare by boiling; to cook, காயச்செய்ய. 2. To heat --as iron, &c., by fire, இரும்புமுதலியனகாய்ச்ச. 3. To heat--as the sun, கனற்ற. 4. To dry, warm, &c.--as in the sun, or by putting near fire, உலர்த்த. 5. To scold, to reprove, கண்டிக்க. 6. [prov.] To dye, to tinge, as a cloth. துரை அவனை நன்றாய்க் காய்ச்சிப்போட்டார். The magistrate has sharply reprimanded him. காய்ச்சுக்கட்டி--காய்ச்சுண்டி s. The juice of young betel-nuts inspissated by boiling, and then dried, காசுக்கட்டி. (c.) (Ains. v. I, p. 65.)--Note. காய்ச்சு க்கட்டி, and காசுக்கட்டி may be from the foreign word Catechu, and not necessarily from காய்ச்சு the Tamil verb. காய் ச்சுண்டி is from the Portuguese, கச்சுண்டி. காய்ச்சுக்கல், s. A dyed or tinged stone a counterfeit gem. காய்ச்சுப்பு--காய்ச்சுலவணம், s. Salt obtained by boiling down salt water. காய்ச்சு, v. noun. Heating metal, stone &c.; boiling any liquid, இரும்புமுதலியனகா ய்ச்சுகை. இரண்டுகாய்ச்சுக் காய்ச்சிப்போட்டான். He has already heated the metal twice. இரும்புக்காய்ச்ச, inf. To heat a piece of iron. கஞ்சிகாய்ச்ச, inf. To boil or prepare rice-water. கஷாயங்காய்ச்ச, inf. To prepare a decoction. 94)

A cement of solder of குன்றிமணி seeds and alum, used by gold or silver smiths, காரமானபசை. காரம்போட, inf. To apply alkali, caustic, &c. காரம்போட்டுவெளுக்க, inf. To whiten cloth, &c., with lye or alkali. காரம்வைத்துப்புண்ணாக்க, inf. To make a sore by applying a corrosive, for reducing a tumour, &c. காரம்பூச, inf. cantiraṉ (p. 159) s. Chandra, the moon as a planet or deity, திங்கள். (c.) 2. [in combination.] A pre-eminent or dignified personage--as இராமச்சந்திரன். சந்திரனைப்பார்த்துநாய்குலைத்தாற்போல. As if the dog had barked at the moon, i. e., mere chatter to no purpose. சந்திரகணம், s. One of the four auspicious feet with which to begin a poem --consisting of one நிரை and two நேர். See கணம். (p.) சந்திரகதி--சந்திரபுத்தி, s. The daily motion of the moon. சந்திரகலை, s. The phases of the moon. 2. The breath of the left nostril. (c.) See சூரியகலை. சந்திரகாந்தம்--சந்திரகாந்தச்சிலை, s. A kind of mineral gem, the moon-stone, said to emit moisture, when placed in the moon-light; and believed by some to be a congelation of the moon's rays. See சூரியகாந்தம். சந்திரகாந்திப்பூ, s. A moon-flower, a flower which turns towards the moon. சந்திரகாவி, s. A kind of radish color made from the செநதுருக்கம் flower or Bastard saffron. Carthamus tinctorius. Ains. v. 2. p. 364. 2. A reddish ochre, செங்காவிமண். 3. A kind of red cloth, ஓர்வகைப்புடவை. (c.) சந்திரகாவிப்பட்டு, s. Silk of a red colour. சந்திரகிரகணம், s. A lunar eclipse. See கிரகணம். சந்திரகும்பம், s. A sacred water-pot dedicated to the moon. See கும்பம். சந்திராதித்தர்--சந்திரசூரியர், s. The sun and moon. (c.) சந்திராதித்தருள்ளவரைக்கும். As long as the sun and moon exist. சந்திரசூடன்--சந்திரசேகரன், s. Siva, the moon crested. சந்திரதரிசனம், s. The first sight of the New Moon on an auspicious evening.-Note. If the time be not auspicious, the sight is avoided. 2. The ceremony of showing either the crescent or full moon to a child, for the first time, on an auspicious evening. சந்திரப்பிரவை, s. A black serpent, இராகு; the dragon's head or ascending node, in Astronomy. சந்திரபீசம், s. The cochineal insect. சந்திரபுடம், s. Moon's longitude. சந்திரமண்டலம், s. The orb or disk of the moon, சந்திரவிம்பம். 2. The moon's halo, பரிவேடம். 3. [in the human body.] The head and the shoulders. (p.) சந்திரமத்திம்புத்தி, s. [in astron.] The mean motion of the moon in a fixed time --as a day, an hour, &c. சந்திரமானம், s. [in astron.] A calculation made from the motion of the moon in its orbit.
