இயமன்
iyamaṉ (p. 48) s. Yama the god of death, regent of the south, and king of hell, (நரகம்.) the place of his capital, in which he sits in judgment on departed souls, sending the good to Swerga and the wicked to Naraka. In the latter there are 28,, divisions appropriated to different classes, according to their respective demerits. He is figuratively described as devouring souls for food. He takes the buffalo for his vehicle; and for weapons, the battle-axe, club and cord, நமன்; [ex யம, to stop, restrain.] Wils. p. 681. YAMA. 2. [Med. usage.] One of the two poisonous fangs of snakes, பரம்பினச்சுப்பற்களி லொன்று. இயமகணம்--இயமகிங்கரர்--இய மதூதர்--இயமபடர். s. The messengers of Yama, நமன்றூதர். இயமதூதி, s. One of the lower poisonous fangs of a snake. இயமலோகம், s. The place of departed souls, the purgatory of the Hindus--the kingdom of Yama. 3) *

உயர்
uyr (p. 63) --உயரு, கிறேன், உயர்ந்தேன், வேன், உயர, v. n. To rise, become high, tall, elevated, to grow, or rise high, வளர. 2. To rise as water; to ascend as a paper kite; to rise towards the meridian as a heavenly body, மேலெழ. 3. To become proud, vain, self-conceited, consequential, to be elated, இறுமாக்க. 4. To be excellent, exalted, eminent, dignified, மேன்மையுற. In neuter forms it is found chiefly in the past tense. 5. To be raised or lifted up, உன்ன தப்பட. உயரப்பறந்தாலுமூர்க்குருவிபருந்தாமோ? Though it soars high, will the sparrow become a hawk? ஓதற்றொழிலுரித்துயர்மூவருக்கும். The study of the vedas belongs to the three superior castes. வரம்புயரநீருயருநீருயரநெல்லுயருநெல்லுயரக்குடி யுயருங்குடியுயரமுடியுயரும். As the banks are raised, the water will rise, as the water increases, so will the rice, rice will increase population, and as the population increases, so will the dignity of the crown. உயரநினைப்பவன்தாழ்வான். To go up. உயரவெறிய, inf. To fling up. உயரவேற, inf. To ascend, rise, to mount up. உயர், rel. part. High, elevated, eminent. உயரில்லறம், s. High domestic virtue. உயர்குலம்--உயர்ந்தகுலம், s. A high caste. உயர்குலத்தோர், s. Persons of high caste or family. உயர்திணை, s. [in grammar.] The superior or rational class. See திணை. உயர்தினம், s. A high day, a festival, பெருநாள். உயர்நிலம், s. High land, a hillock, a hill, மேடு. 2. The world of the inferior gods, தேவலோகம். 3. An upper room or terrace, உப்பரிகை. உயர்நிலத்தோர், s. The gods, the celestials, வானோர். உயர்நிலை, s. Swerga, சுவர்க்கலோ கம். 2. An upper room, மேன்மாடம். உயர்ந்தசரக்கு, s. Valuable commodities, choice articles. 2. [in sarcasm.] A great person--as, அந்தவுயர்ந்த சரக்குவரமாட்டாது, That precious piece of goods (great personage) will not deign to come hither. உயர்ந்ததமிழ், s. High poetic Tamil, above the comprehension of the vulgar. உயர்ந்தகுளச்சி, s. A kind of prepared arsenic, பவளப்புற்றுப்பாஷாணம். உயர்ந்தபாறை, s. A high rock. உயர்ந்தமனுஷன், s. A tall man. 2. A man of high station. உயர்ந்தவயசு, s. A great age, advanced age. உயர்ந்தோர், s. The great, the learned, the renowned, the exalted in piety, virtue, austerities, &c., sages, ascetics, சான்றோர். 2. High caste persons, உயர்குலத்தோர். 3. The celestials, வானோர். 4. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். உயர்மலை, s. A high mountain. உயர்ச்சி, s. [impr. உயர்த்தி.] Height, elevation, loftiness, altitude, eminence, sublimity, உயர்வு. 2. Excellency, superiority, dignity, moral worth, exaltation, மேன்மை. உயர்த்திதாழ்த்திபார்த்தல். Regarding the hours of one's caste, rank, property, &c., fastidiously. உயர்ச்சிகாட்ட, inf. To show one's superiority. 2. To exhibit one's real dignity. உயர்பு--உயர்வு, s. Height, loftiness, elevation, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Dignity, greatness, excellence, மேன்மை. 3. Increase, விர்த்தி. உயர்விக்க, inf. [in rhetoric.] Incongruity, impossibility, absurdity--as அலை கடல்களேழுந்தூர்த்தந்தாத்தினூடே--மலையனையமால் யானையோட்டிக்--கலவாரை--நீறுசெய்துவையநெ டுங்குடைக்கீழ்வாழ்வித்தான்--மாறாச்சீர்வையையார் கோன், the Pandian king of Madura of endless fame filled the seven seas with sand, drove his elephant through the sky, reduced his enemies to ashes, and brought the whole world under his sway. The customs of the world. உலகவாசை--உலகவாஞ்சை, s. Ardent love of worldly, or sensual enjoyments, உலகவிருப்பம். உலகவாழ்வு, s. Temporal prosperity. உலகளந்தோன், s. Vishnu the measurer of the world, விட்டுணு. (p.) உலகாசாரம், s. Relative duties, the customs, rites or duties to be performed according to the country, caste, rank, relation, &c., of persons respectively. உலகாயிதம், s. A system of materialism, or atheistical epicurianism, அறுசமயங்களிலொன்று. See சமயம். (p.) உலகாள--உலகோம்ப, inf. To govern, protect his country--as one of the duties of a king. உலகாள்வோன், s. A monarch, உலோகாதிபன். உலகியல், s. The customs of the world, உலகநடை. உலகோம்பல், v. noun. Preserving the world--one of the six occupations of kings. See தொழில். உலகோற்பத்தி, s. The origin, or development of worlds. மேலுலகு, s. The upper worlds, which are seven in number, viz.: பூலோ கம், புவர்லோகம், சுவர்லோகம், மகாலோகம், சன லோகம், தபோலோகம், சத்தியலோகம். கீழுலகு, s. The lower worlds or regions; which are also seven, அதலம், விதலம், சுதலம், தராதலம், இரசாதலம், மகாதலம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகம், s. The three worlds, viz.: சொர்க்கம், மத்தியம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகாளி, s. உலோகம்
ulōkam (p. 66) s. The world, the earth, any of the fabulous worlds of Hindu mythology, உலகம். 2. Worldliness, earthliness, secularity, உலகத்துக்கடுத்ததன்மை. Wils. p. 723. LOKA. 3. Metal--as iron, &c. Five simple metals are given in the native lexicons--gold, silver, copper, iron, and lead or tin, பஞ்சலோகம். Wils. p. 725. LOHA. To these are sometimes added two mixed metals--as வெண்கலம், a mixture of copper and tin, making bell-metal, &c., and தரா, a compound of copper and zinc, or pinchbeck, &c. உலோகக்கட்டி, s. A mass of metal composed of the five kinds in equal proportions, பஞ்சலோகக்கட்டி. (நிக.) உலோகதாது, s. A kind of arsenic, துத்தபாஷாணம். உலோகபற்பம், s. A preserver or protector of the world, உலகத்தைக்காப்ப வன். 2. An appellative of Vishnu--as preserver, விட்டுணு. உலோகராட்டு, s. The Sovereign of the world; i. e. God, கடவுள். உலோகரூடம், s. Custom or fashion of the world, உலகவழக்கம். உலோகாதியந்தம், s. The beginning and end of the world. உலோகாதீதம், s. That which transcends the world, which is supermundane. உலோகார்த்தம், s. emaṉ (p. 73) s. The deity of Naraca or hell, where his capital is placed, in which he sits in judgment on the dead, and distributes rewards and punishments, sending the good to Swerga, and the wicked to the division of Naraca or Tartarus appropriated to their crimes: he corresponds with the Grecian god Pluto, and the judge of hell Minos. and in Hindu mythology is often identified with death and time; he is the son of Surya, or the sun, and brother of the personified Yamuna or Jumna river, நமன்.
